: Cell Phone
Yaqui_Element 10-29-2003, 12:58 PM I'm trying to gather some ideas for mounting my cellular phone in my E. I'm trying to avoid the full, hands-free kit installed. Trting to figure out 1) How/where to mount, and 2) hands-free kits used. I have a motorola V60 flip phone. :D
hownowcb 10-29-2003, 08:14 PM The best place to mount a cell phone in your car is clenched between your thighs, and have it set to "vibrate first, then ring". Just be sure you keep both hands on the wheel at all times! And enjoy the smiles! Oh...and don't bother to answer it, either!

you promised not to tell! By the way, can you call me again in 5 minutes?
Thanks!
hownowcb 10-29-2003, 10:14 PM Ringy-Dingy!!!
eMass 10-29-2003, 11:35 PM Why mount it? I prefer to throw my Treo 600 in the little dash cubby to the left of the steering wheel.
I can see it great and it's within easy reach.
When it needs to be charged I plug the adapter in and throw it in the cubby on the other side of the dash.
If you must mount, consider cheking out the install I did for my navigation system. That's a great place to mount a flexible stalk for whatever you need to mount - including a cell phone base. Search on my screen and the words "nav", "magellan" or "navigation" to find it.
Hope this helps.
E-Devil 10-31-2003, 10:43 PM I have a V60 too. I just took a square of velcro and attached it to the right of the stereo. Works well for me.
BlackdogStudios 11-14-2003, 11:09 AM i used some extreme velcro, (made for mounts to concrete etc, comes neutral grey in colour) ) on the flat space to the right of the shifter (i have AT) what i did was use an extra belt clip, cut the velcro to match the clip part. and adhered the hook part to the dash and the fuzzy part to the clip. my phone slips right into it..it too is a flip type phone (LG) i can still use an earbud on it while i drive, and the screen is visible if i need to see it its also handly close to the AUX power jack in case it needs to recharge while im driving.
whenever i use something adhesive based inside the E . i use an alcohol pad to prep the plastic before applying. all seems to hold up fine!
best

lae10851 11-14-2003, 11:22 AM Good point!
Alcohol also helps clean the surface to prevent infection.
LOL

BlackdogStudios 11-14-2003, 11:37 AM good lord, i know i wouldnt want my E to end up with post operative infection...or trench foot...

brendan 11-14-2003, 12:10 PM Was up till 4am last night wiring and testing my replacement audio system for the EX on my testbench (read: bed). Only things left to do are inlining the speaker->line-level adapters, wiring the OEM harness adapter/sub-outs/aux-in and figuring out where all that wiring is going to hang out (hoping there's some room around the sub for it to hang down in).
Anyway, the system's got a bluetooth cell phone speakerphone as well that uses the car audio for the speaker. It tested out fine much to my surprise(well, for outgoing calls, noone was calling me at 4am).
"Telephone"
<stereo mutes>
"someone's name"
<repeats name back>
"home"
<dialing noises>
<ring!>
Neat!!!
So, within the next week or so, I'll just get in the car and be ready to go. If the reception is lousy, I'll just take the phone out of my pocket and put it on the no-slip pad on the dash.
I'm not a big drive-and-talk person. I generally avoid phone calls while driving, but with the holiday season approaching, I'm sure I'll be driving various places for get-togethers and getting lost on the way. The speakerphone will make getting directions "in-flight" much less harrowing.
"hello computer",

ShaneS 11-16-2003, 09:09 PM I just throw my LG VX6000 on the shelf over the glove box and I use the power by the aux jack as well to recharge. There fore making it easy to grab when there is an incomming booty call lol
wmmead 11-17-2003, 08:03 PM I will try to post a picture if anyone is interested but this is what I did:
I use a Sprint PCS Sanyo 4900 phone with a plastic harness that has a round knob on the back that slides into a small, mountable plastic dohicky (a technical term). This dohicky is "U" shaped and about an inch and a half long and half an inch wide with a groove for the round knob on the harness. You get the idea.
The question was where to mount the darned thing. There didn't seem to be any likely spots that would not mar the look of the console. Then I found the perfect spot. I mounted it on lower part of the left side of the windshield frame, just above the dashboard. It fits neatly without looking too bad. When the phone is not in, you don't really even notice the little plastic mounted piece. When the phone is in, you can see the phone clearly and when a call comes in, it lights up and you can see it without taking your eyes off the road.
Since it is on the left side of the car, it won't be convenient for charging, but that isn't too big a deal.

Please do!
I'm trying to decide between adding a passive clip up near the roof line (for better signal), or a more hidden, but active, clip lower down that has an antenna lead attached. What you are proposing might be a great place to wire the antenna lead in and put the phone clip...

lae10851 11-17-2003, 09:21 PM Has anyone tried the Honda magnetic cell phone mount? (Available from H and A but not actually Hondas)
Amy
wmmead 11-18-2003, 03:16 PM Here are picts. One with the phone "on the hook" and one with it off.
I like how the phone kinda tilts as you go around corners. Kinda like Element-J's Hula girl, but not as good.

brendan 11-18-2003, 03:51 PM Aha! I see! Neat!
I had been thinking of putting one of those magnetic holders on the A-column up near the roofline (again for better signal) since I won't need the display w/ the speakerphone.
On the other hand, I wonder if I can mount the HB?-33 holder (for the T610) in the same space as yours, and wire the antenna in from the back...
If I were left handed, that would be even better. <smacks self> No, no handling of the phone while driving!

Yaqui_Element 11-21-2003, 02:22 PM I thought about the magnetic clip, but I'm worried about my reception? Can a magnet be good for my cell phone?!
hownowcb 11-22-2003, 12:10 AM Could it be any worse than the million cellphone signals, radio waves or other various microwaves going through our bodies 24/7? I wonder sometimes how good that is for us. But the odds of a magnet of a magnitude that feeble seems unlikely to cause serious harm. By the time it did, odds are your cellphone contract might be up. And time for the next "new thing" anyway.
