: Fall Cruise Together

Hello everybody....I've been talking to my brother in law and we had a brainstorm, how about we get the clubs together for a big Fall Cruise? My brother in law is Benny (bh241), and my club is the East Tennessee Fiero Club based out of Athens, Tennessee. I have heard a lot of stories about your cruises and I think we can come up with something that'll work if your interested. I'll work on it on my end and Benny can work on it on his end and we'll see what we can set up. Let us know your thoughts and ideas.

You guys remember last fall, we went across the Cherohala Skyway, and the Dragon. had a picnic at Fort Loudon State park. That was a blast.

We should do something similar, maybe even down in the Northern Georgia / South Western NC area? There's a lot of nice driving in the area.

Should be beautiful in the fall.

Sounds good. Pick out a campground. Is this a road Sam will get sick on?
If so he can ride with Rocket Dog :-D

We'll pick something that the dogs will be fine with. It's more of a 'concept' right now though.

Just tossin' ideas around.

If we're going to enjoy the fall colors then it'll have to be around Oct. or Nov., and if you want to hit North Georgia then Fort Mountain would be a great ride. It's on 52 between Chatsworth and Elijay.

I would like to go on a cruise, but I get sea sick too easily. Maybe if someone organizes a gathering at Knoebels Amusement Resort (it has a great campsite) in Elysburg, PA - I could come to that. It is a really cool place in midstate Pennsylvania about 10 miles off Interstate 80... very rustic and in the woods. It has a pool, big campground, a covered bridge and plenty of rides for the family to enjoy. Maybe next year. Something to consider. http://www.knoebels.com

How about the ULTIMATE EXTREME E CHALLENGE: the infamous and, I might add, treacherously nefarious The Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap, with 318 curves in 11 miles, is America's number one motorcycle and sports car road. The nearby Cherohala Skyway is quickly becoming number two with its remote 60 miles of scenic mountain highway.

that's true, the foxfire museum would be awesome. the whole area has so much to offer.

I do worry about the weekends through October though, it seems that they are filling up fast.

I guess we need to take a look at the schedule and pick a weekend and go from there...

I also remember us talking about the Kings Mountain Battleground (National/State Parks) and then there was the talk of the Charleston meet... man that would be a great event... JCK you still pondering that? *nudge* *nudge*

We do need to get something going for the fall down this way...

It's fine with me if we want to repeat the Dragon run, is there really that much interest?

I guess we could re-do the whole trip? Picnic at Fort Loudon (http://tennessee.gov/environment/parks/FortLoudoun/) maybe even find time to do the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum (http://www.sequoyahmuseum.org/)?

Any real interest?

Personally, been there done that is my opinion (even got a t-shirt to prove it). :) Are you thinking of this being the fall meet or just another meet?

08-12-2008, 10:03 AM
It doesn't matter really... I haven't heard any real talk of a fall meet, if anyone is seriously thinking about putting one together they really do need to say something soon...

Again, I honestly don't care when, or where but we really do need to get something going.

If this gets organized, we will come. We will make a 3 day weekend out of it, since we would drive so far to get there. I have not done Deals Gap in the Fall before it has always been in Aug. I would love to see all the fall leaves from within my E :D I can try and recruit more FL E's to go!!! We are try to do a monthly/bi monthly meet and eat too (but it's not going well we have had 3 E's both times so far :-(). Keep me posted please!

If there's no objections I'll invite the Georgia Fiero Club to join us. We might just end up with 100 Element's and Fiero's combined. That would be a heck of a showing at the Dragon's Tail and the Skyway.

bh241
08-13-2008, 10:37 AM
Rob - you should come this Saturday too if you can, it wil be a good chance to meet these guys and we could well work something out for the fall.

If you guys wanna turn this into a camping weekend, there's a campground up on the Foothills Parkway just off the (TN) end of the Dragon. There's also a nice picnic ground there - we could do a picnic there rather than Loudon State Park...

Honestly, the possibilities are really endless, we just need to get something going - fall will be here before you know it.

Seriously, JCKridgeline - any more thoughts to a Charleston get together? * blatant nudge *

Yeah Rob, come join us Saturday if you can. It might be a good introduction to see what you are getting yourself into before planning a fall meet with lots of us.

Benny - If we do the Dragon again this year, would you want to do the Cherohala again or skip it? One idea would be to do the Dragon and have a picnic at one of the parks?

I'm not beyond doing something different. There are so many ways/places to go. We could do the dragon (if that's what everyone wants to do) then take the Foothills Parkway up to 321 to 441 and back down in to the Smokey Mountain National Park to Cherokee... or go further south into Northern georgia - there's several places there we could do...

Seriously, there are a thousand and one things we could do... I just want to make sure we do something, know what I mean?

I just talked to the Georgia club and their to busy to do anything more than a day, and I think the Tennessee club will have to stay with a one day also. But we could meet up with you and enjoy the ride somewhere along the way.

bh241
08-14-2008, 06:32 AM
You know, a good 'day' trip would be to get together in Cherokee and drive the Blue Ridge Parkway north to Asheville.

There's something like 24 tunnels on that end of the BRP. We could call it the "Tunnel Tour" or something equally as corny.

The BRP would be slightly more crowded than say The Foothills Parkway, but I would guess it would be less crowded than the Smokey Mountains (US 441).

The BRP is closed just north of Asheville, but that wouldn't effect this route. We're still looking at about 18 tunnels (http://www.virtualblueridge.com/parkway/general/tunnels.asp) between Cherokee and Asheville. Combine that with the fall colors, and this may just be a decent event. We could picnic somewhere along the route or of course grab a restaurant somewhere. (I say do the picnic - some people get kinna weird about big dogs when it's eatin' time...)

Thoughts?

10 - 15 or so I would imagine. We'll try and get a handle on it as time gets closer. First we gotta decide on a date and a location.

Actually you would be surprised at just how well these 'toasters' handle a curve....

Just a little history for you all. The 84 Fiero is the only year that caught fire. And they had a recall and added heat shields and a deeper oil pan, which cured the problem. And the 84's had the 2.5 4 cylinder engine. In 85 they came out with the 2.8 HO V6. Now were putting 4.6 Northstar engines and LT1's in them. And no they don't burn either. But that's the only thing anybody remembers about a Fiero is that they burn, but they don't.

We're into driving instead of camping and we like a great resturant over picnicing. We like taking a curve so fast that the windshield washer squirts the window without touching the switch. We speed up in the curves instead of slowing down. What ta heck, the cars are just plastic, if we wreck we'll just snap in a new piece.

vwgary
08-16-2008, 06:52 AM
Just my 2 cents. I'm a big car guy and have had my share of hot rods to Corvettes and muscle cars to vintage VW's. While I'm not against a multi club/multi marque gathering I don't think it should be our "Fall FoliagE EvEnt". A big part of a cruise is caravanning. With Fiero's, Sky's and Solstice's there will be too many differences in driving styles to keep a decent procession. To me it would also take away from the Eple thing.

We discussed options for the fall at our meet-n-eat and decided to go with two events, a Fall Ride on October 25th, and a Fall camping Trip in mid November. Unless someone comes up with a better idea in the coming days we're going to go with these two ideas.

The Fall Run will begin early morning in Cherokee NC and travel from the lower end of the Blue Ridge Parkway up to Asheville, NC. Once in Asheville we plan to have a dinner before heading our separate ways. I don't want to post all the details this far into a thread, I will get everything in line and made a new thread later on this week.

As for other car groups, you guys are welcome to join us. It's all about getting together and enjoying a good ride. However, keep in mind, this will be during what could well be 'peak leaf season' along the BRP. It may well be impossible to maintain a 'formation' or 'caravan' the entire route. We may well wind up going as 'separate groups together' if that makes any sense.

The fall Camping Weekend will be a few weeks later and will run from Friday to Sunday. Again, I'll post the info on a new thread. This will be held at a State Park in South Carolina - yes, water and power at each site. There will be sites available for trailers, RV's, and Tents. We should be able to even do some limited 'moding' if anyone is interested.

Well when I came home today I found Buddy doing something I thought I'd never see him doing. I was totally shocked. I walked into the kitchen and there he was, snorting crack. That's right, he didn't even try and hide it. He must have been doing it for a long time and I just hadn't noticed the signs.
