I've spent probably a total of 10 months in Yellowstone over the last 25 years.
Haven't been there for 5 years.
Wish I could have been there with everyone.

Ok, have to get back to work tomorrow, so returned this evening. Some quick images from Flagg Ranch. We felt so lucky to get to participate for just a few days with those folks that are the best "e"ple I have run across in years. Big hearts and know how to have a great time!

WE HAD SOOOO MUCH FUN!!!!

These will undoubtedly get moved to an official photo thread, just wanted to get-em up quickly for everyone!

Just a quick note about the campground, the showers are great, the site grouping was very nice, and the weather was terrific minus the first hour of our stay with the thunderstorm.

The pic of the Elk was taken from the same highway on the way back to Camp. And the very next day I saw this Grizzly in the same pool ( looking for the Elk ).

Junebug posted from the "Million Dollar Cowboy Bar" the other night and I'm posting from the "In-Laws" in Trenton.
As luck would have it I've got 3 different feature films that are demanding attention.
So I'm dropping off Jeanie and I'm doing a drive straight thru to Hollywood.
We almost cried when we realized we had to leave early. So much beauty, so much fun, I had a list of fun things I wanted to do and didn't get half of them done. I must admit though. I did win the Horseshoe Championship

Oh, by the way for future reference you can get cell phone reception at "Lizzard Junction" approx 5 miles south.

Here is the pic I meant to post earlier

Perhaps, the biggest attraction at Yellowstone is the Buffalo (in addittion to the Geysers, the Bears, the Elk, the Moose, the Wolfs, the Flowers, the Rivers and the Mountains). For three days I had been driving around the Grand Tetons hoping I would see Buffalo and finally as I/we were driving in the NW part of Yellowstone, there they were. The 1st one we saw was struting down the Highway as if he owned it. We measured the line of cars behind him at 5 miles. (I'm sure he very amused by that:D)
The 2nd & 3rd pic show other street vendors

I grew up in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and spent many weekends over many summers in Yellowstone with my family. The last time I was there was after I got married, and we were heading from Idaho back to Iowa (where I went to graduate school). That was in 2004. If only we'd had time we could take off of work! The pics look great, and I wish we could have been there with you all! I really miss Yellowstone!

Here are some dramatic pics of the Herd. It appeared to me that there were equal numbers of Bulls and Cows.
We saw a few violent duels of Head butting but I was unable to get a good pic because of the angle of the Sun and the Park Ranger screaming at me to "keep it moving"

We were lucky enough to be in Yellowstone during the "defrost cycle" the Rivers were roaring and Ice cold. (some even smelled like sulphur). I took these pics of 3 different Water Falls. 1st is Moose Falls, 2nd is Lewis Falls and the 3rd is Gibbons Falls.
I missed the biggest and probably the best (Yellowstone Falls ) but I think Spdrcr5 took lots of pics there. I seem to recall him telling some elaborate story about the falls and some special event.

Hey Jet, so you are the horseshoe king? I came from behind to only lose by 2 points. I actually felt pretty good about that. You definitely got around the parks to get those pics! So, were you able to get all your work done when you got home? Is Ms. Jet still here, or home? I'd guess she is still at her sis's house. Does she need a ride to the airport?

Among the stunningly beautiful things that I was able to experience were the Hot Springs and Mud Pots at Grant Village on the west shore of Yellowstone Lake. Hundreds of pools, some 3-4ft diameter others 25ft diameter, yellow water, blue water, green water all determined by the mineral deposits. some were like geysers, others were boiling, and others had gas bubbles seeping up from ????. They were awesome

Hey, nice pics everyone!
We got some of them too and will post them as soon as I get the camera cable which is over at my sister’s house.

We left the campground at 9:00 AM Thursday morning and successfully pulled off a 12 hour power-drive from Grand Teton, Wyoming to Mesquite, Nevada.

Heck, it took us 3 hours just to get from Flagg Ranch to the nearest Interstate !!!
But the scenery on the road was jaw dropping wonderful… that, some vitamins and XM 82 dropped us into the groove and we just kept on rolling.
Once we got to I-15 in Idaho Falls it was a straight shot south to Salt Lake City and beyond… we were 80 MPH, cruising all the way.
Miss Ellie (our Element) took it on (heavy load and all) like the endurance camping champion that she is.. tough little trucks these Elements.

Spent the night at a casino in Mesquite, which was a welcomed reward to the end of a delightful albeit very long drive.
Woke up Friday morning had a splendid buffet breakfast, won more money at the poker machines, then drove to LA, arriving home around 6:00 PM on Friday.

I can’t say enough about how super cool this entire camping trip was.
From the time we left home 3:00 AM two Thursdays ago, until we got home yesterday – from start to finish – this was more than just a camping trip –
it was a awesome traveling adventure and we loved every moment of it.

We sure had fun at this gathering.
So congrats to everyone who attended the campout – it's you all who made this happen like it did.
It was a smashing good time! :D

No bears were located in our tents or the campground either but there was a sighting about a mile away from us on Tuesday.
This event sighting got a few rangers all riled up and they proceeded to drive through the campground confistacating unattended coolers, water bottles and cookware.
Dirty or cleaned – “ bears know pots and pans."
That's what they told me anyway.
But we saw no bears in camp.

Bison are most magnificent creatures.
To see them in a herd waking across and down the middle of the road in stopped traffic is buku fun and pretty dang exciting.
We had one of these huge hairy beasts pass slowly by our Element within an arms length.
Snorting and lumbering – it looked directly at me - giving me the stink-eye as it walked by. Very kewl.
We shot some nice pics of the big guy – hope they come out… whoa baby!

Nothing goes with camping like dogs do and we had a few of them with us too.
Three to be exact – Obi, Duffy and Teddy who were all delightful and provided us with hysterical laughter and all sorts of good old doggie fun.
Obi takes to water like a fish and Duffy does too.
Teddy had to be coaxed a little bit but he too joined in the big splash-down out on the Snake River next to our camp.
But Teddy did have his moments - like when he jumped off leash - bolted down the road - scooped a horse turd up with his mouth and never broke stride... no kisses from him anymore thank you.
Box4Rox and some of the other camping fools will post some pics of these canine shenanigans soon and you’ll all be delighted at what you’ll see.

I don’t know how we did it but we somehow managed to come back with more food and booze that we left home with.
This should give you a general idea of how much stuff people brought along with them for this trip.
If you can name it – I'm sure that we had it – and tons of it!
Food, drink and mirth were everywhere in abundance.

I can go on and on about how great a trip this was.
I could even break it down by the day as individual chapters for a novel and have plenty of good stuff to write about.
It was that much fun. :D

But I’ll let others chime instead and share their experiences of what I thought was an extrodinary time hanging out in the big woods.

OMG Trina that's some pretty fancy driving - very commendable indeed.
I thought my 12 hr. power drive was impressive - but 15 hrs. ?!?
And how was Red Lodge and The Tooth? Did you enjoy them?

Ric is correct - this trip was waaaay better than ever and that's really saying something considering how awesome some of our other trips have been.
We keep raising the bar and will continue to do so on up coming camping gigs as well.... speaking of which - here's a preliminary schedual for the remainder of 2008 - 2009.

I think Larry was going to put them in the EOC Hall of Fame which appears to be in his back yard. And the numbers are only relevant when we go to Yellowstone. Beisdes I would never be able to use it again, for me it's 185 miles to Death Valley and 640 miles to Humboldt Redwoods.

Just wondering, were there any prizes for the most Mesquito bites ?
I would like to put in my entry of 82.
I was even using Deet 100.
An old Cowboy I met in Utah said next time to use Listerine as a rub. Apparently the Mesquitoes hate it. (I'll try anything) s
I was tempted to try that "Bear Spray" but I didn't have any.
Did anyone have Bear Spray or Bear Bells or Bear anything ?

I drove the big circle around Yellowstone on Thursday up to Mammoth - beautiful. My favorite spot is still the Chuck Norris area though.

I took the windy road down to the town of Gardiner, MT. I bought a working cowboy hat and dropped in on a couple of bars and I met an American Bulldog named Hooker at the Devil's Slide. Best dog I ever did meet and I met a LOT of dogs shee it (I'm talkin' like a cowboy).
The bartender's girlfriend's daughter painted Hooker's nails pink. Hooker needs a touchup and I would personally go for an earth tone.

Third photo is of the north gate into Jellystone from MT. Loves it.
Fourth photo is of the 75 cent Glow In The Dark Tingler Ring machine available from the men's bathroom at Red's Bar, Gardiner, MT.
Fifth photo is from the Two Bit Bar in Gardiner where they may have stolen the Chuck Norris geyser area sign. They are done.

Rachel and I arrived at my house at 9:30am this morning. We drove through the night to get home early so we could get the laundry done and she could get back to her place.

We went through Badlands National Park on Friday and it was AMAZING. We then drove to Winona, MN for the night. We left there Saturday and drove straight home after leaving around 11am.

Once I figure out all of the miles and mpg's, etc I will create a new thread with all of the stats, but suffice to say that we drove 5,200+ miles in total.

I'm right up there with you on the mosquito thing... they were BAD! I don't think I had 82, but I was not there as long as you.
I wasn't worried about bears, you shot a picture of the only bear in the park. I tell you there has to only be one bear, because I have never seen one, and I even worked in Yellowstone summer of '87 and never saw a bear then either.

Here's how I think it goes down...
They keep him/her in a cage at night, feed it salmon, and only let it out when people come from great distances to view it. Those of us close to the park don't see it.... ever.

Fortunately I also worked in Denali Park Alaska 88,89,90 seasons and saw plenty of bears.

Alaska: many bears
Yellowstone: 1 bear

My bf and I drove cross country a few summers ago (didn't have my E then :-|) and we stopped at the Tetons. They were one of my favorite stops on the whole trip. It hailed hard on us. Like golf ball sized hail, dented the crap out of the roof of our van, thought it was going to break the windshield. But the lakes and the mountains were beautiful. I have some grea pictures, just not on this computer.

I'll give you a prize for the most miskeeter bites - did you like Slosport's collapsible, 10 gallon cowboy hat that I won at the Gag Gift Exchange?
I think it would look most impressive on you.
I'll let you borrow it then you could wear it to your next props meeting and impress the hell out of those Hollywood movie people with it.

Potluck night! The Dutch Ovens were in full effect, with my corn casserole (thanks to Imperience for the recipe!), Jet's Blind Dog Chili, and Box4Rox's chicken with vegetables and rice. The rest of the potluck was great, with a wide variety of dishes to go around.

So the scones ... oy, the scones. These things were highly-touted, and thank goodness they turned out! I had to improvise with the dishpan as my mixing bowl, but it worked great. Gotta love camp improv! Other pics are of the dutch oven while they were baking, a close up, Slosport and The Ted enjoying theirs with apricot preserves they brought to share, and Mrs. Jet and Djembe having a coffee klatsch.

Trina and I were on the boardwalk survival paths at the (Chuck) Norris geyser fields and we heard a pre-goth tweenager utter these two words after mom pointed out that this was Nature.

This is why I go to these things. Seriously, I don't want to get sappy here but you will never know in advance what happens on these outings that touches you deeply.

Nature's Doom

by Jessica

You say it's Nature
I say it's Nature's Doom

Doom, doom, doom

Why can't I have my own room?
This room is Nature's Doom

I went to your Schools, your Churches -

Why do you do this to me?
My phone doesn't work.

Nature's Doom.

Jackson is a really nice place and had a lot of high energy "big dog" (Labs, Retrievers, Huskys, etc.) activity going on at the "dog park" at the end of Cache Street. The dog park is actually the bunny slope at the Snow King ski area . . . lots and lots of hiking around there and we hooked up with local dog owners (Million Dollar Cowboy Bar waitresses !!!) and climbed to about 8000 ft for a view of Jackson that most don't see

Oh boy, you leave California for two years and forget about the lay of the lands here... tsk tsk tsk

Humboldt is Giant Coastal Redwoods - there's no dust there.
But you're correct about the grass - there isn't much of any.
A shade canopy caused by the 300 ft Redwood trees doesn't allow enough sunlight to hit the forest floor so grass doesn't grow.
There's practically no undergrowth either.
Instead the Redwood forest floor is carpeted with moss, ferns and pine needles. Oh yeah, and pine cones the size of footballs...
Doink! (you wouldn't want one of them to fall on your head from 300 ft) :-P

You've yet to make it that far up the California coast good buddy.
But you and Obi are a pair of tough rambling road dogs.
I bet you could do both SD and NorCal.

Sure it's gonna be tough for anyone to beat the 15 hr drive-a-thon, throw down that Junebug pulled off from Montana to Tukwila, Washington a few days ago.
But I bet you can. :D

She's currently certified as the reigning Power Driving Queen of the EOC and there's the challenge. Go for it Mike - I know you can do this!

I say you should do a Black Hills trip next summer - then make your way to the NorCal coast and Humboldt Redwoods next September.
Then on the way back you could stop at Custer State Park again.

I think that was the general idea with the Crazy Horse monument which has been in the making for the last 30 years.
He's pointing to the Black Hills and the Rushmore Monument* which will be dwarfed if the Crazy Horse Monument is ever completed.
The completion of the monument is something I doubt will happen in my life time as it's been such a slow and time consuming project.

No Wind Cave . . . I missed a lot of stuff due to time constraints . . . I would have also liked to have spent more time in Cody, Wy. . . . . Rodeo on weekend nights and Buffalo Bill SP.

Mike I am sorry I missed you, but glad you found the dog park. Sioux Falls is a great city, not overly dog-friendly but they finally finished that park this past winter. It gets a lot of use.

Looks like you really 'did up' SD West River...isn't it amazing out there? I love it and would be up to camp with you in the Black Hills! :) Has to be before school starts though. Thanks for saying good things about South Dakota. I think people are impressed with the parks and how clean everything is. Great pics you have!

Glad you made the trip!

My Mom is from two little towns near Sioux Falls, Canova & Wakonda. We we back there in 2000 and it was gorgeous as usual. Rapid City would be a nice place to retire.

The Crazy Horse monument is just amazing. I have a picture of my Mom, her Mom & HER Mom and the old Ford "camper" on the way to the Black Hills to vacation, probably taken about 1921ish (Mom was born in 1920).

Excellent photos, we will have to make it to South Dakota one day the pictures of Rushmore are astonishing.

Not that the others aren't mind you.

I really love the western part of the US.

Thanks to all you e-ple for posting these pictures for those of us who simply could not make it to this event. In a way, we're able to enjoy a small part of it too.

maybe one day there will be an arrow pointing to Shelby, NC...

that's me, I live in Sioux Falls! :)

The western part of the state is really beautiful. The eastern side, flat and open offers a different kind of beauty though too. Soo much open space! I love all the positive press that SD is getting in this thread! COME VISIT one and all! :)

If anyone wants to see what the Great Plains might have looked like when Native Americans roamed the plains take State Hwy 83 south from Murdo, SD into Nebraska all the way to North Platte. And when you go through Valentine, NE have some of the finest water I've ever tasted, cooooool, clear, water.

I do miss my road trips. I envy you NighthawkStella.

Nice meeting both you and Betsy . . . . thanks again for the bike ride !!

I don't think your pics are going to get moved over to this thread so maybe you should re-post them ??

We almost had a big last night bon-fire on Thursday with the Final Four that remained (Junebug, Slosport, Djembe and myself) but Junebug was worried about toxic fumes from Miss Ellie's sign would violate AQMD air standards and OSHA would come out and fine us.

I ended up staying until about 6:00 pm on Friday and the nice folks from Michigan (where the campsites are also on grass . . . :D ) in the RV site across from me invited me to dinner. The kids started a campfire with the signs and we had a short "ceremony' . . . . when I was finally rolling out I think I heard them saying " cool . . . . now lets burn Hollywood . . . "

I don't remember giving anyone a burn permit for the Hyrum sign. Sounds like a plan! I love the Hills! Next summer schedule will probably depend on the location of the National meet. But I typically have all of June, July and the first week of August that is very flexible.

:DThanks Mike,
I hoped you got more of the two playing.

The trip was a bit hard on the baby.
It surprised me that my normally confident pup freaked out.

Since our return he has had 2 Laguna Lake dog park runs with his usual pack, and today a wild rump at Avila Beach. He is now sleeping at my feet.
He is eating and pooping as usual...I know Mrs. Jet was concerned about Duffy's changed habits too.

Teddy is returning to his normal playful, friendly, fluffier and smiling self.
He started jumping up and down when he got a whiff of our SLO air.

His birthday is August 23. He will be one year old.

The trip back was longer. :-?:-?:-?
We meet up with my brother and Sis in law in Ogden for a great Dinner.
Winnemucca was further than I remembered.
My storage box opened while I was driving 75mph by the Salt Flats.
We stopped at Auburn instead of Sac.
We saw lots of rest stops and little parks along the way. We met some world travelers at our motels. Best Westerns are very dog friendly. The soft clean beds , bath tubs and pools were very restful.

More details and pics when I get them together.
Chat later,
Marilyn

The Ewoks seem to like it. :D

My "No action in Jackson" fishing rods never left my roof rack. :-?
If I had line on them I would of gone fishing - but that was too time consuming of a chore and I was having way too much fun doing other things.
I guess I got distracted - Richelle was right - she said I wouldn't catch any fish. :-P
But I'm hoping to do some fishing at Cachuma Lake during the Santa Barbara Wine Tour & Campout the first week end in October.

Jet,
You have a photographers gift! I need to get back to it too.
That spot next to Lake Yellowstone, (west thumb) is an area that my family visited when we were kids. Used to take the boat out on the lake, come up close to the edge of the lake without actually pulling up on the shore, and swim over the hot pots that are under the lake water. It was like a bathtub. Probably frowned upon today, but 30 years back, there were a lot fewer boardwalks around that area, and nobody around.

Hi Everyone,
Tonight I finally read all the posts and viewed all the pictures (15 pages i think). By the way...Jet was in such a hurry to get back to L.A. that he practically opened the E door while driving and pushed me out at my sister and brother in laws house in Trenton. :)
Well just kidding but we got there at 6 pm and he left at 9 am the next morning after a stiff cup of coffee and some eggs. I was happy to be with my sister but it was a little tough seeing the e drive off with my little doggie Duffie and Jet inside. I got over it and had a nice week to visit and catch up before flying home on Delta last Wednesday. Ok back to reality. Clean the house...can you believe there are still food storage bins to be unpacked? Wash the dogs - both were filthy and help my daughter get ready for college (sept 20 - boo hoo). Thanks everyone for making this a great trip with lots of memories. Your pictures are all wonderful. Sorry Dave but I have to put this out there.....I took a bunch of the photos you posted! The buffalo with the straw hanging from his ear and most of the thumb pot pools at Yellowstone Lake! Ok I'm in trouble now.

MS. JET,
So glad to hear from you!
Trina and I were wondering why the EOC Women aren't on line more often.
We like to chat with you, and the other EOC women out there.

We were sorry to see you guys leave so early but our adventure will always be a great memory.
Our "Close Encounter of the Buffalo Kind" was a real heart stopper.:???:

I'm photo shopping a bunch of cute shots of the crew. Duffy and you are so photogenic.

This is a great time to come visit the central coast the beaches and lakes are to die for.
If you take the Cuchuma Pass you cut off about 30 mins. of the drive.

Teddy has had a great time at the beach, doing his crazy dog run.
I think you'd be surprised at his personality at home.
He turned one year old yesterday.
I signed him up for a new Petsmart Class in Sept to get that 'Come Back' command cemented in his cute stubborn brain.
I'm looking online for a bike doggie trailer so we can ride to the dog beach and park. Good for reducing gas $ and muscle building for this bod.

A friend of mine has 2 kayaks and lives a few miles from Santa Margarita Lake. You, or Dave and you are welcome to join our outing.

My stuff isn't unpacked either; still sorting it all out.

BE in touch. Do you have a commission you're working on?

Off to a fundraiser for a certain presidential person.
This should be an exciting week.
PM me anytime,

Hi
SloSport: I will plan to visit and bring Jet and Duff if possible with kayaks or just me and dog without kayaks....my accord doesn't have a trailer hitch:D
maybe that's good since I don't know how to handle pulling a trailer anyway. I'm glad to hear that you are still unpacking too. And I look forward to seeing the 'real' Teddy personality. I know there is a poodle in there and they are clowns for sure. Dave and I had three standard poodles in the past and all of them were the smartest and most athletic dogs. One was very adept at fetching in water and would have kept up with Obi quite well. We miss them but our little dogs seem to fit our lives better now. I agree that the central coast is the best at this time of year and the only problem is that I want to move there - every time I visit. It's hard for me to resist the beauty up there and it's less congested too. Anyway, I'm paying bills today and trying to get my easel set back up since I packed it and brought it to the event but never cracked it out. I have to finish the dog portrait (my avatar pic) as it is not quite finished yet. Have a nice day!
Box4Rocs: I look forward to seeing the video if you get it downloaded! Also, the camera we use is a Canon but I forget the model. Hopefully Dave will post and let you know. It's been a very good camera. I love photography as much as he does and used to be avid about it but now just a little less - though I still take photos for reference to paint from. I'd like to do a painting of the picture (Dave took - give credit where credit is due) of Jackson Lake with the clouds reflected in the glass like water. That one is superb. Cheers!

Jeannie,
Dang that Box4Rox - he's constantly dropping dimes on me!
Hey - I had no idea that Dave didn't make the chili - in fact when I commented about how good it was he didn't allude to the fact that it was you who had made it.

As for the beautiful pics - I had no doubt that it was your artistic eye that captured much of them.
I was convinced that Dave couldn't drive and take such nice photos anyway. :-P

Slosport - pay no attention to Box4Rox's comments on Teddy's mental health. If any one needs a psychiatrist it's Box - just ask Obi...
He'll be the first to tell you that Box is gone off his rocker and driving him crazy.

We're taking contributions; "Let's Send Box4Rox to a Shrink Fund"
And we now accept travelers checks, food stamps, soda bottles, loose change and Monopoly money.

Good news - we're already up to $3.86 just another couple of bucks and we can get Box a 1/2 hour session with a real head shrinker -
world famous Jimi Wishbones the Voo Doo Shrink!
This guy is the Dog Whisperer of bent human beings.
He'll have Box all straightened out in a matter of minutes.

Yeah Marilyn! :-D

Happy that you and Teddy will be Rolling with the Winos in Santa Barbara (not to be misconstrued as Rolling the Winos)
Not to worry - we're not about drinking and driving.
Tasting yes but drinking no.
Any drinking of the wines takes place back at the safety of the campground around dinner time.

Dinner looks to be great fun this year with Jet's "Chili Cook Off Throw Down"
I like how you're buttering the Jets up with talent accolades and what not.
I suspect that if we give Dave enough props he might become over confident, drop his guard, lower the bar, and give us novices a chance to beat him at his own chili game!

Looks like Richelle got into the fray a little bit too. :)
I really dig the Ewok sounds that Duffy makes when growling.

It was just way too good for you to of made it by yourself.

He thinks that Obi stole it and is using it as a chew toy.

Here's the gladiator video; I'm pretty sure the body armor boosts the confidence level and makes them "tuff-er" than they really are ;-)

Thanks Box!
I love the video of the boys. They are a good match. I love their outfits.
Teddy made a trip to the Vet. Guess he was being bite by some Jellystone bug.
He is on meds and doing much better.
He is back into has training routine and pleased to be back at his Doggie Park and Beach.

He does miss the horse poo. We only have cat poo around here.

If we go to Cacuhuma I know he can find some more, it's horse country down there.
What are you and the Obster up to, any more outings planned?
Where is the Jackulope living, over your fireplace?

I apologize for not getting our pics online as of yet. I have 1,000+ pics to go through and get online. I have been swamped without much time to be able to breathe! We're going away again this weekend but I will make a concerted effort to get them online this week and next weekend.

For now I was able to figure out our travel costs in terms of fuel. Here is what we have.

We started the trip on 7-Aug at 98,518 on my E's odometer, we arrived at Flagg on 9-Aug with 101,050! Yes, I rolled over 100,000! That feat was accomplished in MN on 8-Aug at approx 2pm CST.

The trip to Flagg Ranch took a total of 2,442.1 miles. We last got gas in Cody, WY before heading into Yellowstone and to Flagg Ranch a bit over 100 miles away.

We used 117.587 gallons to get to Cody, WY
Cost was $449.50

Between Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks we drove 452 miles.

We drove through 11 States; NY, NJ, PA, OH, IN, IL, WI, MN, SD, WY and MT.

We saw the following National Parks/Monuments:

Mt Rushmore NP (night and day)
Crazy Horse Memorial
Devil's Tower NP
Yellowstone NP
Grand Teton NP
Badlands NP

Our trip home took us 2,345.0 miles

Numbers from the trip:

Gallons Used: 235.641
Total Fuel Cost: $903.60
Avg MPG: 22.178
Best MPG: 30.264; second best: 27.668 :D
Worst MPG: 18.286 - avg speed 82mph
Total Miles Driven: 5,240
Avg Cost/Gal: $3.839
Getting engaged: Priceless! :)

We used the cruise control whenever possible, we had several hundred pounds worth of gear with us that severely dropped the rear suspension down. Our average speed the first 1,200 miles westward was somewhere between 68 and 75. Once we hit MN it increased to above 75, then in SD and WY we were above 80 until we got to Yellowstone. The stretch in SD accounted for our worst mileage on the trip. The 450 miles through the 2 parks accounted for our two best MPG figures.

We got gas in 9 different states! That's pretty cool. :)

As I said, I will get the pics up as soon as I can.

We both can't express how much fun we had on this trip. Our friends all thought we were crazy for taking an 11 day x-country drive together but we both think that we came out of it with a much stronger friendship, relationship and down the road a marriage.

If you both love traveling and camping, what better way to test your limits with each other:cool:
I know when I'm on the road I can stand Mr. Jojo so much better. Just knowing I can dump him off on the side of the road anywhere just relaxes me so much:D

First of all Larry, that is a terrific post! I vow to someday be this complete.

Honestly, the part of a marriage for me that was tested to it's fullest were the trips across this country. I believe that if you came out stronger, you are making the right move in getting hitched! There are obviously more reasons for getting married, but putting two people in a box for that many hours, in that many situations, agreeing on music, food, when to stop.... for me it all points to the fact that I love my wife after 20 years. I must, to be able to come away from this sort of trip better friends.

Congrats, and thanks for the post!
Todd

Hey there . . . .

I hope Teddy is feeling better; did the vet say what it was ? Hopefully not West Nile . . .

Jackalope is doing fine . . . he's not allowed in the house and is a permanent part of the trailer.

I'm getting ready for a bunch of local TD campouts in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin . . . we're doing a cranberry festival/campout with the Wisconsin folks. It's good to be back with my home crowd of Teardrop and Dog nerds :D

I'll post pics but they'll probably show people camping on grass and that will get Miss Ellie upset . . . stay tuned (GO SARAH PALIN !!!! Whoo-Hoo :-P )

NPR started a series on the '88 Yellowstone fires if anyone is interested:

Hey Box - glad you're back at the hacienda, hanging with the rest of the Tear Drop riff raff.

I promise I won't get upset and I'll look forward to seeing some Tear Drop pics on the grass - speaking of which; you guys like grass so much - maybe you should considered camping at a golf course.

Sara Palin !?!

Yuk yuk yuk - presidential historians are calling her the most under qualified VP canidate in US history.
That's a real low bar to slide under too.

Personally I think McCain should of gone with someone with more experience - like Phyllis Schafly or Harriet Myers.

I am back from trip No 2 and can get caught up on things.

Despite the rumors that I got taken by Cheyenne Indians I am alive (however have a very dirty "E" that is getting a good cleaning today).

I have a slide show to share. //picasaweb.google.com/mkramme/TheGrandTetonAndYellowstoneWithELementGroup#

The trip to Yellowstone was the totally wonderful! Great group to camp with. It was cool that we got the 1st news of the wedding bells for Larry and Rachel, we had great food, good company, all things that make for a great trip.

Hey Box,
Ted had a bunch of what looked like tick bites with no tick holding on. He is always on Tick meds so maybe they bit and then fell off.

He is Happy and back to his running, smiling, eating, adventurous self. We start an intermediate dog training class on the 14th.

I've been reinforcing his doggie training and he is doing better at coming back when off lease.

I'm painting the inside of the house and the rental in back. This is harder than it used to be 20 years ago.
I'll have the place ready for a 15th move in.
I'll be down at Mom's for her 95th birthday by the 28th and then hopefully back up to Cachuma with the EOC group.

Thanks for feeding us singles and making your kitchen available. It was very handy.

Are you planning on camping with Sarah P. If so you can taking her hunting for Jackalopes.

Happy September to you!

I am so beyond upset that we had to bail on the trip due to expecting something big on the horizon, only to have it not work out... very dissapointing. I LOVE all of the photos and am insanely jealous.

There is only one cure.

Who's up for another trip out there? :) We'll be right behind you this time I swear!

Sorry you couldn't make it too!
You will be hard pressed to find any of us that got to go, not wanting to go tomorrow! Among the camping fools, there is talk of a springtime Oregon trip, and of course the Humboldt trip in the fall! Be there, or you WILL be square:D

Just went through this thread again and realized that I never posted the pics that Rachel and I took on the trip! While I can't post individual pics from work, here is the link to all of the pics that we took while on the 11 day trip.

In there you will see 7 or 8 folders for Yellowstone. Enjoy. :-)
