: Tall tires/Off road look - photos?
mikeAL 08-11-2008, 09:02 PM OK I am getting close to either buying an '08 or a '09 Element. I am comin out of an Expedetion. Does anyone have photos of an Element that has a bit o a rugged look? I am think a little taller tire and maybe a roof rack would meake me feel more at home. I would really love to see a few photos, or maybe I'll have to be the first (if I can make up my mind on an '08/'09)
Thank you

tribalelement 08-11-2008, 10:47 PM A (NBP) rugged look from Cali, what else could you ask for, Im thinking of powder coating my stock rims black, Love the look 12 MPG :D
dancetiludrop 08-12-2008, 12:53 AM 09's probably won't be out for quite awhile, so unless you're willing to wait until possibly the beginning of the year you're stuck with an 08.
No one has any clue what's happening with the 09 and we probably won't for at least another 1-2 months, but I don't expect them to hit the dealers for a long time.
I don't blame you for trading in....I had a 97 expedition that I sold for the E...and never looked back :D
Here's some examples of what the E can do.....and can't do!

Thanks! :D I put my 20's on about a month ago...and this weekend I'm putting my 16's back on for camping over Labor Day Weekend, which I'm sure I'll be swapping back to the 20's the following weekend until winter rolls around....haha... I'll try to remember to get a half-n-half shot this weekend during the changeout.
Its hilarious to feel the differences in the wheel/tire combo's when I switch them out for events. The 20's stick like glue, but they buzz a little from the "artistic tread" and you feel every crack in the road. Whereas the 16's are super quiet and comfy, but they howl when you push them hard in the corners.
BigTzElement 08-20-2008, 11:34 AM Here are a few picts of our Es.
Enjoy!!!
fredmertz 08-20-2008, 04:02 PM Just remember the rugged look with a roof rack and AT tires will kill your gas mileage. I tossed the Badyear Stranglers after 5mos and 6000 miles and went with Toyo Open Country HTs.
Great tire for unimproved roads, light off roading and go across fields etc.
Have dedicated Michelin Latitude Ices for snow tires.
Also remember AT do not perform as well in snow and ice as dedicated snow tires and in the cold too becuase of the difference in tread compounds.

John,
What wheels are those? I looked for something like that but I settled for what I could get in 15" with the correct offset.
Also are you going to engineer the lift yourself or are you waiting for an after market kit from one of the big off road suspension companies?
Ursa Minor 08-28-2008, 11:19 AM I am not sure exactly what wheels they are, the guy who owns this Red Ecamper put them on post-conversion. I'll if I can find out, but I think they are 15" w. BFG AT's, but the offset isn't the same as Honda they probably have another inch (pushing them "out" of the fender)
The lift is coming from some shop out east he said, but we just built a car out for a guy from up in WA that said he's working on a lift kit as well. If I hear/see anything on this I'll put up a link as that is a question I get asked a lot.
cheers
John
dancetiludrop 08-28-2008, 12:42 PM Those tires on the red one look very beefy like the BFG's or the General Grabber AT2's. I had some AT2's and they were great but very loud at 35-50mph and because of the weight took away from the gas milage, but very good in performance.
Also they're much cheaper in price than the BFG's :D

What is going on with the roof? What is it, camper?
Twilightzero 08-29-2008, 09:40 AM Put on a set of these bad boys for the beefy look:

rickbike10 08-29-2008, 04:17 PM that red e-camper is sweet. I would like to know the vitals on the tire/wheel combination if anyone has it. I can only wish for the e-camper conversion, damn!
GaryS 08-29-2008, 06:27 PM What is going on with the roof? What is it, camper?
New here? Yes, it's a camper (http://ursaminorvehicles.com/camper.htm).
rico2072 08-30-2008, 07:59 AM New here? Yes, it's a camper (http://ursaminorvehicles.com/camper.htm).
Yes, hadn't seen that style yet, very nice. thanks
Ursa Minor 09-01-2008, 07:22 PM the vitals on the tire/wheel combination if anyone has it.
owner of this red ecamper said:
"15 inch rim from discount tire + flat black paint with the BFG LT235/75R15. I get some rubbing in the back when I hit a big bump."
I checked on discount tire website, but didn't find anything...here's a close up of the wheel/tire combo, maybe someone will recognize it.
cheers
John
dbowen 09-01-2008, 09:42 PM Who makes the front push bar on the red E-camper? Also who makes the smaller one on that black E with the roof basket? Were can I get them?
Thanks
Twilightzero 09-02-2008, 10:00 AM Pigryder has a set of these on his E:

scarder 09-02-2008, 04:39 PM I had these Kumhos on for a while but the noise was too much to take so I tossed them. They were pretty swift in the rough stuff though.

rickbike10 09-09-2008, 07:34 PM Hopefully we can restart this thread, I am a big fan of the off road look, and I like to get ideas from other rigs
sixstring 09-19-2008, 06:52 PM These are KL71s.:D
rickbike10 09-21-2008, 06:51 PM how about a full pic of your rig, what size did you decide on, how do you like them, any rubbing.
sorry for all of the questions, but I too am in the market for the Kumhos, thanks
Kayak08 09-21-2008, 07:29 PM Sixstring,
What is the ballpark pricing for the tires that you have? Those rock! Please give details... did you need to do a lift too?
sixstring 09-21-2008, 07:54 PM They are 225/75R16. I don't believe you could go any larger without a lift.
The guy installing said they wouldn't fit, his exspression was priceless after he had to jacked the e up higher so he could line up the tire and studs.:)
Here are some more pictures.
Kayak08 09-21-2008, 07:56 PM Thank you Six. I really like the look. Do you recall the cost?
sixstring 09-21-2008, 07:58 PM Sixstring,

I gave $480 mounted, balanced and installed. I did see that tire rack in south bend sells them for $123 each. The most ridiculous quote was $832 at Discount(?) Tire.
Kayak08 09-21-2008, 08:05 PM I work in South Bend :)

sick pics.........looks tough.......i run bfgs. 225/75R16 also.........
sixstring 09-22-2008, 03:23 PM These are heavy tires, 8 ply, the closest thing to a tank track I could put on the e. That said you can exspect they will not add to mpgs.
texasboy post up some pictures of those treds.

rickbike10 09-23-2008, 08:59 PM hey six, Texas Boy thanks for the pictures. Is a 235 wider than a 225? also Kaikara I spray painted my wheels and they look great!
texasboy77904 09-23-2008, 09:34 PM ........
LMntGuy1982 09-23-2008, 10:18 PM 235 is the width of the tread and the /75 means its 75% of 235 from the edge of the rim to the tread.
I'm pretty sure anyway.
rotomoto 09-23-2008, 11:33 PM tire sizing 235/75/16. 235 is tread width in mm. 75 is the height of the sidewall, expressed as a percentage of tire width. 75 percent of 235mm is the tire sidewall height(218mm or 8.58 inches). 16 is the wheel diameter in inches.
devilchrist 09-24-2008, 10:32 AM love the black stock alloy wheels on black.. I might have pick me up a set just to do the swap.
sixstring 09-24-2008, 11:11 AM Nice pictures. I like how the size fills the wheel well.
Kaikara 09-24-2008, 11:59 AM Kaikara I spray painted my wheels and they look great!
Do you have any pics? I want to powder coat but it would be a pain in the ass to be without my e while the rims are gone. I was thinking about painting but worried about how it will look/hold up.
rickbike10 09-24-2008, 11:11 PM I will take some pics tomorrow, and post them, so far they have held up great for over 4 months. I was very reluctant to do this in the beginning, but a friend of mine had assured me that it would work, and he let me know if I decided to get them proffessionally done, they would sand them down anyway. By the way I have the same rims as you
rickbike10 09-25-2008, 08:51 PM here goes60529
the black rims look fo much better to me. That other element is my delivery vehicle for my restaurant.
Kaikara 09-26-2008, 07:33 AM That is exactly the look I want. I have a NBP though but the black rims on the blue looks great.
rickbike10 09-26-2008, 08:39 AM I think the black rims look great on a black car as well
BrownSquirrel 09-26-2008, 09:18 AM Hey Rick, can you post a few more photos of your Element?
I love the ABM w/ black rims. Looks awesome.

raskarle 09-12-2011, 01:33 PM snapped a few photos before my ride yesterday. I just painted the stock wheels with Krylon Fusion Satin Black about 3 weeks ago. So far there are no chips. It only took one can and one coat. I did a thorough sand job too. The tires are the general grabber at2. 225/75R16
