: How to boost fuel economy?
wyldmoonwoman 09-06-2008, 09:49 AM I am looking for the best, most economical, suggestions to boost fuel economy, besides hypermiling and regular maintenance...
what parts/accessories/mods would you recommend to improve your mpg's?
I have never been completely happy with my car's fuel economy and want to fix it
rotomoto 09-06-2008, 10:13 AM There's not much you can do with aftermarket stuff. You could chuck the back seats, they weigh quite a bit. Possibly a K&N filter, but that's a questionable mileage gain at best. I drive sensibly(under 68 mph) and regularly get 25 mpg. You bought a heavy, aerodynamically lacking toolbox, there's only so much you can do.
ramblerdan 09-06-2008, 04:37 PM I have to agree with Roto. The most effective economy-enhancing device is behind the steering wheel.
dharma 09-06-2008, 07:59 PM There's a ton of threads on this. After reading through them, we decided to try removing the rear seats (no kids - don't need 'em) and increasing the tire pressure to around 38 or 39 psi. It's too early to tell for sure, but it sure looks like that has helped with an mpg or two. I need to drive a few more tanks before I'd be willing to swear by it though.
Copper 09-06-2008, 10:13 PM Fact: My round trip drive to work is 68 miles. x 5 = 340. Every time I fill up it's between 12-13 gallons. At worst that's 26mpg.
I've done 3 things: full synthetic motor oil (mobil 1), tire pressure is 3lbs over what is posted on the door (can't recall the exact number) and a K&N air filter.
Driving habits: When I get stuck behind a semi I stay there insted of gunning it to pass. Also when the monster SUVs tail gate me to try to get me go go faster, I move aside and let them by, and then drive behind them. In racing they call it drafting, I call it letting the other sucker burn his gas. :-D
If I was to drive to work like a raving lunitic changing lanes every 10 seconds to try and get 2 car lengths I might gain 5 minutes on an hour commute. I'de rather save the gas and the $$$.
Chris.
wyldmoonwoman 09-06-2008, 10:32 PM Drafting! I already know how to do that from biking!
I never thought to apply it to driving...
I am a girl
ZOMBIEinvader 09-07-2008, 09:14 AM When I was young and less fearful I would draft semis in my VW bus. Just glad none of those semis ever made panic stops!

Oh my, that would have ended with you under the drivers seat. :o
I'm pulling about 19 now in my E, all local. None too thrilled about it, but I'm sure it's just me playing around with my new ride.
Rocket Dog 09-07-2008, 10:28 AM I'm not a moderator, but I play one on TV. This topic is a well worn path. Please use either the site search engine or the google search at the top of the page, to find any one of dozens of threads on this subject. The discussions have ranged from software on the chip to driving techniques, tire pressure, and various devices on the market that promise to deliver better mileage (real or imagined). Honestly, I don't mean to pour vinegar in your punch bowl but this subject really has been covered to exhaustion.
...and now back to your regularly scheduled programing.
Speedy Toaster Dave 09-07-2008, 10:51 AM tow it with a smart car....
ZOMBIEinvader 09-07-2008, 11:09 AM Wow... PAX not treating you well.:)

Dude...man I am sorry I got your panties in a wad...I did a search...and to be painfully honest
since I don't have access to a computer at work anymore
and I have a life outside the forum
spending hours that I don't have reading stuff I don't understand doesn't jive with my "it's all about me" lifestyle
So I asked for the "best, most economical, suggestions to boost fuel economy, besides hypermiling and regular maintenance..."
I read all that suff already...
Can we make up? I iz sowwy (insert lolkittyhere)
Copper 09-07-2008, 09:17 PM I know it's beentalked about MANY times in the past.
The stuff I've done does make a difference, and it can be done without a major investment in time or $$$.
Easy, quick, and cheap things to save a buck or two.
lwclancers 09-08-2008, 07:45 AM I think Rocket Dog is referring to the BIG sub forum called "Fuel Economy and Gas Related Discussion" A search isnt needed, you just go there and read some. Many useful tips and sticky's that can be read in the time it takes to make a post and read through all the propoganda people will respond with.
Mainly because this question is asked about as much as "can I hose it out?" ;-)
Speedy Toaster Dave 09-08-2008, 07:50 AM Moon Woman personally this is a forum ya ask what questions you want dont
sweat someone havin a bad day..
While drafting semi's does decrease mileage, it isn't always a great idea. They can't see you back there and it can be very dangerous.
Also, the fuel economy shouldn't have been a big surprise when you got the E. If there was an easy fix to increaseing it, Honda probably would have made it standard. For an SUV, it is already pretty good.
Copper 09-08-2008, 10:02 AM To be clear... I'm not riding any bumpers. I'm just taking advantage of what's in front of me rather than racing to pass them. I'm leaving room for stopping.
There has been many an experiments done to test this theory... even driving 100 ft back of a big ol semi will lower your drag.
And as you might imagine the E has got some drag.
And Drag is a real Drag man.
wyldmoonwoman 09-08-2008, 10:48 AM It's all good...In the future, I'll ask questions like this on the Mercedes forum in the OT section where the subject hasn't been beaten to death
