: Guinness hit by car
wolfhounder 09-15-2008, 06:21 AM Guinness was hit by a car while i was away on a one night work conference in Prince Edward Island. it was my first night away from my dogs and look what happened. i said i didn't want to go and everyone said don't be so foolish. Ironically, he was transported to the veternary college in PEI, while i was there. he has surgery this morning, he has a busted front leg and shoulder. he is lucky to be alive. please think of Guinness this morning!
Hondamade4dogs 09-15-2008, 06:34 AM How come people can hit dogs and think nothing of it, but you hit a human and all hell breaks loose..:???:
Sunshine 09-15-2008, 06:59 AM Oh my god.
I will be thinking about you guys today and sending good energy.
*hug* keep us posted I want recovery pictures!
bh241 09-15-2008, 07:27 AM We're keeping the 'big' guy in our prayers.
Let us know how he's doing.
We just pulled one into rescue that also decided to tangle with a car... what is it with these guys?
Brawsie 09-15-2008, 07:53 AM Poor Guiness, I'm glad to hear he wasn't killed. Sending happy thoughts to both of you.
People suck.
omgsideburns 09-15-2008, 08:57 AM How come people can hit dogs and think nothing of it, but you hit a human and all hell breaks loose..:???:
well a dog isn't going to sue you if you hit it with a car............
beledi 09-15-2008, 09:07 AM I am so sorry. Will hope all turns out well. Healing thoughts to Guiness. Darn these hounds sure capture your heart.
ZOMBIEinvader 09-15-2008, 09:13 AM Hope your loved one recovers well.
I saw nothing in your post to suggest that the driver of the car was irresponsible or did not care. A little surprised that some assume or infer that from your post.
_jea_ 09-15-2008, 09:44 AM So sorry to hear that. He is in our thoughts!!!!
barkdogs 09-15-2008, 11:13 AM Poor Guinness! I so look forward to your pictures and can't wait to see those when he's up and about again.
Twilightzero 09-15-2008, 11:31 AM Hope your loved one recovers well.
I saw nothing in your post to suggest that the driver of the car was irresponsible or did not care. A little surprised that some assume or infer that from your post.
I don't think that was implied. What I infer is that if you hit a dog, you won't get a ticket for reckless driving or whatever, whereas if you hit a human, even if they jump in the road in front of you, chances are you'll at least get a ticket if not sued for something...
I'll keep the Beery One in my prayers & thoughts. Let me know when he's well enough that I can send him a steak :D
wolfhounder 09-15-2008, 01:24 PM Hope your loved one recovers well.
I saw nothing in your post to suggest that the driver of the car was irresponsible or did not care. A little surprised that some assume or infer that from your post.
you are correct, sorry, i should have clarified. the driver was very concerned and calls for updates. they are dog lovers and had a seeing-eye-dog with them (for the passenger, not the driver:twisted:)
Guinness surgery was postponed til tomorrow. grrr--- he is in stable condition and the vet is one of the best in Atlantic Canada. she has already put Guinness x-rays into her computer and remodeled the leg 3 different ways to see what would come out the strongest. isn't that incredible? and when she first saw Guinness she put her head and arms right around him, hugged him and talked to him softly. she has been there since the college opened and is a wonderful human being.
he is on pain meds, and they have a team of 4th year vet students with him 24/7. they love him and update me twice a day. His leg is in a splint and he is able to get up on 3 legs now and go outside to do his chores. we are not out of the woods yet but things seem much better...i appreciate all the support and i mean it. it makes such a difference.
lmdavis1004 09-15-2008, 09:41 PM Thinking positive thoughts for Guinness!
wyldmoonwoman 09-16-2008, 08:14 AM Fingers (and paws) crossed!

Rocket Dog 09-16-2008, 01:07 PM Please accept my hope for a full recovery. Few people I've known have your dedication and love for dogs that you display here.
It sounds like all that can be done, is being done and I'll stay tuned here for your updates.

Big hugs for Guinness! ...and his people!
wolfhounder 09-16-2008, 06:05 PM thank--you thank you thank you everyone for your thoughts of my boy
Guinness!!! it was a very complex surgery, and took longer than they wanted but they said Guinness was a real trooper and performed excellent under the anasthetic (sp)? i think he is going to be ok.
he had a pin put in the two pieces of the bone. he had his bones drilled and bolts put in to hold the pin in place just like they would do with a human leg. they said it took a long time to drill and get through the bone. there were some pieces of bone that had lost blood supply and were no good, so they removed them.
the surgeon was pleased with the job. Guinness will have one leg shorter than the other, as they had to draw the bone up higher than anticipated, but it would be very minimal, the way humans sometimes have a marginal difference in leg height. The only other thing is he has to go under one more time. because of his size, the surgeon wants to put a steel rod outside of Guinness for extra reinforcement--this will come off once the bone is healed, but it will prevent the bone from breaking again while he is recovering.
i want you to know how appreciative i am that you all gave Guinness positive thoughts and well wishes. it may seem trivial to some people, but to me it is my boy Guinness.
maybe i am morbid, but everday i prepare a little bit for the fact that IW have a short lifespan and they will eventually leave us. i have concluded that when i loose one of my dogs, they have had the best life could give them. i take confort in knowing the pain i will feel is only my pain, not the hound, who is safe and not suffering---it would only be MY grief i am left to deal with, and surely i can deal with my own grief if i know my dog is safe. With that being said however, i am NOT prepared or willing to loose Guinness at 20 months.
thank you again, everyone. i will have recovery pics soon
_jea_ 09-16-2008, 06:13 PM Wolf, thanks for the report on the baby. I am glad he is doing well!! He is young so he will recover fast without major problems.
kerri716 09-16-2008, 06:45 PM Sorry to hear about your furbaby's accident. Sending healing vibes his way for a speedy recovery! Keep us updated
bh241 09-16-2008, 06:55 PM So glad to hear that Guinness is doing better. Having a tad shorter leg isn't going to be a bother to him at all.
Waiting to see the recovery pictures.

Kayak08 09-16-2008, 06:59 PM What would we do without our furry family members?! I'm so relieved to hear that your baby boy is in recovery. He is in my thoughts and prayers.
Dawn66 09-16-2008, 07:30 PM Hope he recovers well...sorry you have to go through this. I know its tough. My ex-neighbor's sister hit my 3 month old boxer pup & left him in the road -not even telling me. I ran down the street to find him & had to pick him up off the road...he was gone. He had escaped from the front porch while I was getting his leash & chased a cat. I felt so bad & guilty & it was a very sad day for me & my kids. Good luck to you both~

wolfhounder 09-17-2008, 08:10 AM proud Guinness
Twilightzero 09-17-2008, 08:12 AM Sorry Wolfy, but that second picture doesn't look too proud. Sleepy and pillowy and humble, yes :D
bh241 09-17-2008, 08:14 AM what happened to Chester?
Short story:
He got hit by a car. The couple took him to a local vet, no owner was ever found. The vet contacted us to see if we could take him into rescue and get his injuries taken care of.
Of course, we went and picked him up, he spent a few days (5) in the Fayetteville Vet Hospital, they were able to get his leg set without having to go the screw & plate route. Assuming it all heals up as they think it will, he's going to be fine(ish).
A few scrapes and cuts, but no real internal injuries. (YEA!). So it's a matter of recovery and seeing how his leg does then he'll be up for adoption.
All things considered, he came out of the whole ordeal pretty dang good.
So how's our favorite wolfhound today?
Twilightzero 09-17-2008, 08:15 AM ...
So how's our favorite wolfhound today?
Careful what you say, Saige might get jealous

he is gorgeous. don't you think his owners are worried and looking for him (rolling eyes):confused:
he is not so good today i guess. that has me a bit down. i think the surgery was hard on him, he won't pick his head up, or go outside---that it probably quite normal though right?
beledi 09-17-2008, 08:56 AM Just checking in on Guiness. (A "Shandy" is my favorite drink.) He may just be trying to heal and get rid of the anesthesia hangover. Hope he is up and going soon. The picture of him in the field is breathtaking. He is so handsome. Heal well and soon sweet Guiness.

Yea, I'm sure they are wondering why he's not home yet... He's a luck pup really, the doctors said if the break were 3/4" lower then he would have lost the leg, or worse... So we're glad for the small stuff, so what if he's got a little limp, right? all things considered.
Yea, it sounds pretty normal for what he's been through. I remember spending many an hour with one of ours (Dexter) after one of his surgeries. It's hard, you want to do anything to make them 'better' but when it comes right down to it about all you can do is be there for them.
Hang in there, it's going to get better, it just takes time.
Sunshine 09-18-2008, 06:14 PM I'm very glad to hear he made it through the surgery. Thanks for posting pictures, I look forward to seeing more like these when he's healed!
I still want pictures after he gets home.
Twilightzero 09-18-2008, 07:52 PM More details! We need more details! Sending Guinness our love!
Speedy Toaster Dave 09-19-2008, 05:33 AM how is your pup doing? i hope he gets well soon and can run thru the feilds again...:D
Soapy 09-20-2008, 06:28 PM Buster sends his best wishes to your injured dog. I hope Guinness recovers as well as Buster did. We had him in a cast for 6 weeks after his lower leg was run over. He had to wear the "Buster Brown" collar for the entire time...bummer. But, it all turned out just fine. He is like an athlete that has lost a step but the deer have not figured that out as yet.
Regards, Soapy
Jet109 09-21-2008, 07:19 PM I am on pins and needles!!!!!!!! Please please please let us know how Guinness is doing...

Twilightzero 09-24-2008, 10:38 AM I'll second (or third?) the update request!
bh241 09-24-2008, 11:41 AM Update from Janice about Guinness:
Guinness’s back legs gave out on him after the 2 surgeries so for a while we didn’t know what was going to happen. We went to get him last Sunday and he had lost his spirit and laid down to die. Irish Wolfhounds do NOT like to be separated from their people. It has been a rough time for all of us---that is why I haven’t been on the computer much.
Now he is home and his spirits have really picked up. He is soooo happy to be home with Saige and his own home. However, we have to carry him with a towel under his armpits and one under his hips to move him anywhere. If we were not strong people, we would be screwed, because it takes 4 people normally.
That is why they let us take him home early----the surgeries are done, there was nothing more for them to do. The vets do not know what has happened to his hind legs, they are perplexed—even the irish wolfhound international forum surgeons say they have only heard of this on 2 other occasions. Hopefully his back legs will come in time—for now, he is only left with one good front leg, poor guy.
Our bill is up to 5000 bucks now so hard times—lol.
That is nice everyone is so concerned with Guinness! Awwww!!! I have exhaustion sickness right now but will post real soon!
Sounds like they can use some more prayers for the big boy.
Twilightzero 09-24-2008, 11:50 AM Sorry to hear that, I'll keep the big lug in my prayers. Hopefully plenty of love and company will help him pull through!

Janice, I am soo very sorry, I just read this today. I really hope Guinnie recovers soon! ((((((HUGS & Good Vibes)))))))))
As for his back legs, are they sure it's not a pinched nerve or something, from being hit?
You guys are in my prayers and I wish there was more I could offer you.
~Kerri, Joe, Kacie, Atlas, Angus, and Angel(foster Pittie)
wolfhounder 09-24-2008, 11:55 AM awwww--sorry everyone, i realize that wasn't very nice not to get back to you--thanks Benny---yes, Guinness took a turn for the worse-- man, the poor fella. i have a video i will try and get on here asap--it is a bit heartbreaking but nice too---because guinness is going home---you will see that his back legs for mysterious reasons have just stopped working---the vets are puzzled and it is the best vet school in atlantic canada. his platella reflexes are gone. they did not nick any nerves during surgery and his back end x-rays are good. so---if anyone has any reason as to why this might happen i would be interested to hear. Guinny is getting stronger everyday--very very happy to be home. when he first saw us he went coo-coo--it would make a grown man cry it was pitiful moarnful crying--poor guinness. we took him home but it is a lot of work and we are exhaustic--i would say the same as having a newborn baby sort of thing. i will get pichas to yas soon! i appreciate that you all love my boy so much!!!!
Twilightzero 09-24-2008, 12:00 PM If he was a human I'd suggest possible psychosomatic causes, but I'm not 100% sure dogs are capable of that?
I'll raise a glass for the Beery One tonight!
wolfhounder 09-26-2008, 07:17 AM Getting ready to pics up Guinness
wolfhounder 09-26-2008, 07:18 AM Bringing Guinness Home. lots of abdominal bruising...poor boy
wolfhounder 09-26-2008, 07:20 AM Saige happy to be home in her own bed
Guinness 4 days after 2nd sX, friend visiting--bruising gone down considerably after icing several times
LMntGuy1982 09-26-2008, 07:40 AM Maybe his back legs are just exhausted from trying to compensate for the boo-boo'd one. I've seem people that have had their leg in a cast and the good one develops problems because they have to walk funny to compensate. Hopefully it'll get better once the leg heals.
maybe i am morbid, but everday i prepare a little bit for the fact that IW have a short lifespan and they will eventually leave us. i have concluded that when i loose one of my dogs, they have had the best life could give them.
I dunno if this is any help but it was part of an email attachment my wife sent me...
A Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year-old).
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker 's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.' Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?'
The six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'
_jea_ 09-26-2008, 08:02 AM Wolf, thanks for the pictures. I hope the puppy will improve fast!!!!

Jet109 09-26-2008, 07:50 PM Love is amazing. Guinness knows that he is LOVED! All will be well!!!!!
I believe!
Kayak08 09-26-2008, 08:20 PM This thread touches my heart deeply every time I check it. My prayers are with ALL animal owners. Our hearts get attached to our pets, and we know how much it hurts when our pets are ill, hurt, or worse... I have lost 2 family members (dogs) over the years, and each time it felt as though a piece of my heart had been taken away. Guniess sounds like he is on the road to recovery (thank god) and I will keep him and his family in my daily prayers. Children are something... I was very moved by the 6 year old childs statement.
beledi 09-27-2008, 07:58 AM Choked with tears. Glad your sweet boy is home and safely on the mend. "Out of the mouths of babes."
God bless our children and our animals.
bh241 09-27-2008, 08:24 AM Thanks for the pictures, they are both very beautiful pups. Our continued prayers for Guinness speedy recovery.
Dogs are wonderful creatures, I for one could not imagine the world without such majestic creatures. I agree, these larger guys have such limited time to begin with - we have to cherish each and every day.
Please keep us posted on his condition.

I couldn't agree more. My 2 "boys" Sammy & Tonka are our kids. I've had dogs my whole life and have expierienced having to put them to sleep. Its never easy. When its time for these "boys" it will be VERY hard on my wife-she has never been thru it and I think shes even more attached to them (she didn't want a dog) than I am at times. My prayers go out to Guinness!!!!
Sunshine 09-28-2008, 12:42 PM I am so glad he's at home!
I have no clue as to what's going on with his back legs. I wonder if it has something to do with how traumatized he is. Maybe after the front half gets better the back half will wake up... Either way, being at home with his pack will get him on the right track. Thanks for the pictures, even though he doesn't feel good he's still beautiful!
Jet109 10-06-2008, 09:29 PM I don't mean to be a pest, but is there any news on Guinness? I am ready for some good news :)
