Okay, I'm in the book business (part time) and I read a lot. I just finished Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Dewey/Vicki-Myron/e/9780446407410/?itm=2) and if you own a cat, used to own a cat, are thinking of owning a cat or just like cats then this book is for you.

Trust me...

I want a cat, but don't own one... I will take your suggestion on the book. :D Someday I'll have a fury feline companion.

Fact: You don't own a Cat! It owns you, and allows you to live in it's house.

Trust me. We have have 7 of them. Um Er ...... Well let me say we are owned by 7 of them!

My thoughts exactly, Dom. I wouldn't go so far as to say I own a cat. A cat lives in my house and mooches off me.

mmmmmm cats.....taste like chicken......

Just kidding, we have two French Bulldogs, and one American Short Hair Tabby - Lucy. (Used to have three cats - but the other two were 18 and 19 yrs old and passed on last year). Lucy gets along fine with the dogs, plays with them (and can kick their butts when she wants).

2 Cats here, Lillith (Named after the Celtic goddess of darkness and shadows) and Rhys (Welsh for Energetic). Love 'em both. Spoil the heck out of them.

Our cats don't own us, they have joined our household as fuzzy equals...
I think that's because we adopted them both from shelters and they've been happy to hang out with us since then.

Love cats.

Wife doesn't. she's alergic.

Lightening now lives with my retired mother. Mom had 2 other cats already.

Lightening is slight 8lb female that pushes around a 20 pound male.

She was a stray kitten when um... she found me.:D

My cat, Miss Grizzabella Stoner Kitty is very friendly and affectionate, very unlike most cats I know...she will even "sit pretty" for treats...unfortunately she does not like the dogs so the dogs are exiled to the kitchen/familyroom so she can have the rest of the house.

I will have to read that book!

Should mention that I am DEATHLY allergic to cats, dogs and some other stuff...
I'm on about 5 daily drugs to keep from pulmonary arrest. IT"S WORTH IT!!!
The allergy meds they have me on leave me clear and focused and also take care of the side issues like fall mold and plant allergies. If your wife is using that as an excuse, Have her try loratadine and move to prescription meds. Cats make that big a difference in your life.

Cats: Make them part of your daily WILD:D

Same here - not deathly allergic but at least highly allergic to cats, dogs, mold, dust, etc. I buy allergy meds by the crate, but it's definitely worth it!

My cats all love being around people and are EXTREMELY social, so much so that people occasionally think the cats are attacking them when they run to greet newcomers!!

I REALLY have to watch it around dogs. I've had to use more than one epi-pen in a night to deal with dog allergies.

As for personable cats, think of them like people. They want a little time to themselves too. Even Rhys, our little lap stealer, likes some alone time during the evening (probably just dozes under the bed). But for the most part, a well socialized (depending on personality) cat will hang out in the room with you and should feel comfortable enough to take a cat-nap while you're near. A REALLY loving cat will use you as a napping surface. Think of it as the ultimate sign of trust for a cat, putting themselves in your care at their most vulnerable moment.

If you decide to get a cat, get a few cat books ahead of time and read up on the breed's social traits. Oriental breeds (siamese and the like) tend to be VERY vocal and friendly, this means that while they may curl up next to you while you watch TV (like a dog) they will also yowl at 2AM because you're not up to keep them company. There's always gonna be trade offs.

I didn't used to be a cat person, I'm really still not a cat person. We have a cat, his name is Nemo. Yes, he is named after a cartoon fish and thinks he's a dog. A dog that can climb on counters and craps in a box. The dogs think he's a snack factory and we have to keep the box in the basement behind a couple of baby gates. Ever have the dog give you a cat $hit flavored kiss then smile at you with litter still on her nose? He's playful and social. I guess I like him because he's a "farm kitty", so inbred that he's incapable of acting like a cat. Seriosly, if he were human he'd be in an institution.

I guess I'm glad that the wife sneaked him in while I was at work.

I have always liked furry animals (dogs included) but since I was 4 I have had cats, several at the time. This of course would qualify me as a cat person, right? 14 years ago my "avatar" adopeted me and at that point I was disqualified (I thought so) from the category. After having observed my pup for all this years, I figured he behaves a lot like a cat (even washes his face and behind his ears like cats do). Probably he has been raised by a cat mom! So, looks like this puts me back into the "cat person" category. :D

PS. Might read the book, thanks for the link.

One of ours, the uber-cute fuzzy grey one, got really sick when she was a kitten about the time we adopted her. She recovered fully but we're pretty sure she got brain damage from it. Nobody home upstairs! But she's the most social, talkative, and friendly cat you'll ever meet. Even loooooves dogs. Doesn't have the instinct to be scared of other animals. But she's a blast to have around :D

Twi, you can have my cat:rolleyes:

The other night (she is still in her rampage to destroy me after I evac'd her from Ike) I was SOUND asleep, I just finished watching a scary movie too, and she reached up and grabbed my hand, hooked it with one claw, starting pulling it down and whacking the hell out of it with the other paw!

I thought a MONSTER was trying to pull me under the bed!
It took me forever to go back to sleep, it didn't help that I was also nursing a mangled hand:mad:

I thought I was the only one with a cat with identity issues. My cat was taken in by a dog rescue home as a baby when it was thrown out and left to die. The runt of the litter it wasnt expected to live. The dogs took good care of him till I adopted him. He gets along real well with the dog needless to say and even follows us the whole way when we go on walks. He keeps up too.

Problem is he is real friendly with ALL dogs some of whom are not too thrilled with him,but he doesnt back down little as he is and recently attacked ( I think he was just playing) a German Shephard on a lease much to the owners surprise. I love him for that. He kicks butt!

This is him when I got him. He's not much bigger now a year later.

My dogs a cat lover !!!! That's why he now has a job, finding lost cats. I'm a trained Missing Animal Response Tech. and Harley is a cat dectection dog.

We went on a search last week, Harley found a cat that was connected to a retracable leash and had been missing 5 days. Don't ask ... and yes I told them NEVER do that again. Anyway Norm was very tangled under a neighbors hot tub.

Website coming soon .... (I just need to figure out webmonster)

Cat lover. Have 4 cats: 1 maine coon, 1 persian, and 2 domestic short hair.
I volunteer at the local Humane Society to help with cat care.
Have been a foster parent for kittens. If I had more money and space I would have more than 4 cats.
We also have 2 dogs: mini Doxin and St. Bernard.
Each cat has it's own unique personality. I like the ones that like to snuggle.

Maybe I should have titled this thread differently. The purpose wasn't to get people to post pictures of their cats, rather I was trying to direct their attention to a new book called Dewey The Library Cat (http://spencerlibrary.com/deweybio.htm). Any cat person would enjoy this book.

The book looks cute...that cat lived a long time! I love cats of all kinds. In Greece when I was a teenager I would rescue some of them from the people there who would 'hang' them. We had a vacant, unfinished building next door to us that I turned into a 'cat house' haha

Found Calico cat with white flea collar.

Well... I went out to get the paper this morning. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a Calico cat. I assumed my calico slipped out the door. I took no more than 5 steps and the cat ran up meowed and started rubbing up against my legs. Nope not my calico. I have been adopted!
I just got back from going around the neighborhood posting found cat signs.

My 290 lb weight lifter neighbor walked up to my screen door yesterday. Unbeknown to me, my little "angel" Moon was sitting at the door. When Doug walked up, she let loose a hiss that nearly scared the (ahem) hiss out of me and Doug too! She has lived with me for 10 years, and I had never heard her do that! Doug hollered "don't let her out"!!!! Scared him too! Too funny:D
