THe use of terry clothes material for wahing and or drying can and will leave markings on your painting.
I use a "firm" round sponge for wahing and a chamois "pronounced shammy" for the drying.
for waxing I use a regular waxing applicator and a cotton tshirt works great for removing that carnuba wax, especially if it belongs to your x.

Good quality microfiber towels are also an excellent means of avoiding scratches. Probably the biggest problem with terry cloth is that people use old bath towels or very cheap and thin towels. If you use old bath towels, all the washing and drying has made the fibers rough and no longer soft. Cheap thin towels tend to come this way to start. You can use terry cloth with some success if they are new plush towels.

When I ordered my Zaino products, they recommended using only
100% white cotton terry bath towels,
washed with detergent only,
never fabric softener,
and using a second rinse.
They also recommend using only Cannon or Fielcrest towels. Since I'm not in the showcar business like them, I compromised and bought 3 100% cotton towels at Target for $10 and change.
They work super great for removing polish. And for drying, I start on the top with one towel. The first towel gets pretty well soaked drying the top, so then I grab a fresh towel and go all around the windows, then work my way down. Best job and easiest way that I've every tried.

I use a chamois, but it gets really wet really fast and is very difficult to dry the roof considering I am only 5'4". I wish I had someone tall to do that for me! (Hubby says its mine so I have to wash it myself - he does the other 2)

Use the california squeegee, it is made of soft latex and willnot scratch your finish, then use the chamios to dry any excess.

do you use a powdered detergent? I have used terry towels and bonnets on my buffers for years and never had a problem. I would look at how you are cleanning your towels and what kind of quality they are. Buy microfiber towels if you can they arent that much more in the long run

Using fabric softener on towels used to dry the car is bad also. Softener will leave a film.

Very True. Powdered detergents will make them scratch too if any of the powder residue is left over.
