Just filled up my Element for the first time yesterday and discovered that the gas cap cannot dangle from the car when you are refilling. The cap comes off entirely, making for a great possibility that your cap might get left behind. Very bad call on Honda's part. Every other vehicle I've owned in the past few years has a dangling gas cap.

if you put the gas cap in the gas cap slot on the door, you probably won't have any problems, however, I have seen someone selling a tether for the E gas cap on Ebay if that would help.

I have oposite opinion of the cap
I hate the little cap leach things they are usually plastic and I have had three break on past cars.
The cap is left to dangle and always has some gas on it and it always drips on the fender

A lockable gas cap that meets canadian emissions would be nice. My parts guy at the dealer explained to me that the Honda lockable gas cap does not meet our emissions standards and therefore is not available in Canada. If we decide on purchasing one south-side, the service-engine-soon light will come on.
What kind of crap is that? How can Canada's emission standards be more strict that say.....California?

Ask your parts guy to check his bulletins and he will see a locking gas cap under part number 17680-SAA-G00 for the E.Some one was trying to blow some serious smoke up your butt with the emmisions crap....its the same part number available in the US and its sold by Honda Canada.

To make things even easier would be a simple locking gas hatch door.
Then you could just pop it from inside and still have a regular unlocked
cap. That would solve both the unsecure gas thing ,and the need to unlock
a gas cap, for those in places you cant pump your own gas..It's a very
handy option and i loved having it on my old 85 Dodge (for crying out loud!)
This is really something Honda could do with very low added cost..

I had thought it was a little odd that the E didn't come with a locking gas door. Then, I saw that the door was made of plastic which I could break with one bare hand
I just bought the locking cap from H and A.
Works fine!

I wonder if you can get it re-keyed to the same key that is used for the rest of the locks. I really wouldn't want to carry around another Honda key.

The kind Bob and I are talking about doesnt have a keyed lock. The door
locks when closed, and there is a lever or button inside that pops the
little fuel door open when you gas up. .

This is a real bummer when the release mechanism malfunctions and you can't get your gas door open to put gas in your car

...Which happens often in my Miata. The door often sticks and that makes for a panicky situation. :x I hate the locking gas door with a passion. The door is locked but the cap still has to be untwisted and has a tether. When you gas it up the cap flops around on the rear quarter panel. Unfortunately if I disable the locking mechanism I will have to pry the door open each time and that risks scratching the paint.
I think the gas cap on the Element is great. It slips right into the slot on the inside of the door. No muss, no fuss. Can't get better than that. Well done Honda! 8)
