Yup, I have seen this coming for a while. Seems to be moving from East to West!

This kind of legislation will be supported (and perhaps instigated) by insurance companies as more and more evidence becomes available that people are incapable of multi tasking while driving.

Here's a new twist to the subject.....

I've just been fitted with new technology hearing aids. I can get bluetooth to my cell phone so I'll be able to receive calls to both earpieces. The bluetooth unit also can connect to an Ipod or Sirius receiver then to my earpieces. This technology may all be illegal eventually in a motor vehicle. What if I'm on an aircraft? The new hearing aids may be considered "electronic devices" and they may have to begin body searches to find hidden bluetooth devices. I'll also have to take my Element in to an OPP station in the spring to have all my dash mountings and electronic devices inspected.

Don't worry......I always drive with 2 hands on the wheel.

You guys didn't have this law already?

Personally, I'd love if Michigan would grow the set and do something similar here, but that'll never happen...

Handsfree-only has been law in NYS for some time. Makes sense to me.

As for hearing aids, what's the airline policy now?

I think it's a great idea. It seems that most of the people I see driving are talking in the phone, how can they possibly be paying proper attention to their driving?

Other provinces do, that's why I said it's moving from East to West.

I agree with Adrian...
It's about time!
You would not believe the crap I see ppl doing behind the wheel, everyday!

let's see...
reading a book
reading the newspaper
putting on makeup
shaving
texting
watching a movie on a computer
eating a bowl of cereal

And many many more...and all this is in bumper to bumper rush hour traffic...
I travel from Grimsby to Mississauga everyday...
I love the drive, hate other drivers...

to be fair, most of my trip is on the highway with 'commuters'...it's not until you hit the 403 in Mississauga that you get the 'drivers' who are getting on at one ramp and off at 1 or 2 down the highway - and really mess up traffic...it takes me just as much time to travel an 8 km stretch of highway, as it does to travel the other 60 km...

tim:

there were too many times either during rush hour or late night (Thurs-Sat) that i have to bail out and take lakeshore and city roads back to downtown toronto because people just drive like maniacs (particularly after Centennial Parkway!)

I agree with the legislation and have no problems with it.

I have a Motorla MIKE phone (the gray i580 military-grade one) and while I don't have a headset or Bluetooth with it, it still has the speakerphone and speakerphone buttons on the outside and the display on the front.

This way I don't even have to open it to answer, talk or end calls. I simply press the SPEAKER button on the top to answer the call, then press the STOP button to hang it up. Another nice feature of it is if I can't answer it or don't want to, sending the call directly to voicemail is as easy as pressing the STOP button while it's still ringing.

The STOP button also silences any notification beeps coming in when I'm not in the mood to listen to it beep incesantly :D.

I'm glad they aren't legislating the use of dash-mounted GPS units because I love my Garmin 250W. When I'm out of town and have to get places or want to know how long it will take, it's a godsend.

So what is everyone doing to solve the hands free issue. I just bought my 03 element, my newer vehicle has bluetooth built into the stereo system. I will miss that! I already have a GPS, less than a year old but it doesn't have bluetooth:confused: So looking for another solution besides wearing a bluetooth in my ear!

Hands free, BABY!

I am absolutely terrible on the road if I am on the cell phone. I am frickin all over the place. Those rumble strips are life savers.

What was not clear in the article is if you have a portable GPS mounted to the window or dash. OK or not?

how about banning in-vehicle consumption of bagels, doughnts and coffee.... last time i had to lick out the extra cream cheese sticking out of the bagle and the car next to me thought i was indicating something else.

But this is Toronto hapyface. Stuff like that is normal everyday life in these parts. I mean, I've been to College & Spadina on a Saturday night so I've seen where Merriam-Webster gets their definition of "crazy" from LOL.

Now come down to Chatham where I'm from for example, and such actions would make you the talk of every Tim Horton's in town
