: Interesting dog article
hapyface 11-07-2008, 08:11 AM I dont know if this should be under Off-topic discussion or part of Dogs & Cat, but I thought people would like to take a read at the following article and figure out.

bh241 11-07-2008, 08:18 AM Personally I think it should go in the 'how not to approach' a dog section..
The dog did what is natural, and most dog bites like this are totally avoidable.
People are basically stupid sometimes - reporters seem to be that way more often though, maybe an occupational hazard?
Here's the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuTZOf5gzZE)... you knew there would be one, right?
I saw that on the news this morning.

More like an occupational requirement
Brawsie 11-07-2008, 10:07 AM I love how people who get bitten say that they "are good with dogs".:lol:
Stupid hooman, next time bring hotdog.

I'm good with dogs and I've been bitten a number of times. Cesar Milan is indisputably good with dogs, and he gets bit every other show.
I agree, bring hotdog :D
LmentalMastiffs 11-07-2008, 11:10 AM I think this poster summed it up really well!

Doh … do some checking on dog behavior. NEVER approach from above with hand extended. Barney was simply acting like a dog being threatened. Try getting down on one knee, to the dog's level, then extending a closed hand, not to pet but to let the dog sniff. And did he ask the handler if it was OK to pet the dog? Don't blame Barney … he was just doing what dogs do!
Did anyone else see Barney give off a little warning before he bit this reporter? It's his own damn fault!
Just my 2 cents.
barkdogs 11-07-2008, 11:23 AM Interesting that they all act as if it is nothing, but had it been a pit bull or rottie, the dog probably would have been put down. Just goes to show the type of unfair coverage you get for different types of dogs.

The dog certainly wasn't projecting that it was happy and wanted to be social. But there's very few people who actually tune in to what dogs re "saying", most of them see a dog as a walking stuffed animal
Yeah, as has already been said stupid human!
The not patting a dog from above comment is right on, particularly for terriers. They do NOT consider themselves '"little" dogs and many quite resent being patted on the head - its a dominance/self-esteem thing.
Scotties, in particular, can be very ornery this way and this one was showing signs of not being approachable (ears down, avoiding eye contact) if the reporter had had half a brain to appreciate them.
Pope*Mobile 11-07-2008, 03:15 PM I love all the political comments about this- another bitter Republican, about time a Republican takes on the media, etc.
Here we go again making something out of nothing; can't the media just leave the poor dog alone :-P

Rocket Dog 02-01-2011, 01:48 AM Interesting article on BBC news.com. It's not a new revilation but a new study that reaffirms a dog's proven ability to detect certain diseases in humans by their sense of smell. The only thing my last dog could diagnose was whether the pizza had pepperoni or sausage. :|
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-12322790
A Labrador retriever has sniffed out bowel cancer in breath and stool samples during a study in Japan.
The research, in the journal journal Gut (http://gut.bmj.com/), showed the dog was able to identify early stages of the disease.
It has already been suggested that dogs can use their noses to detect skin, bladder, lung, ovarian and breast cancers.
Cancer Research UK said it would be extremely difficult to use dogs for routine cancer testing.
The biology of a tumour is thought to include a distinct smell and a series of studies have used dogs to try to detect it.
Mine sniffs me just to see if I'm still me.
Not sure who else he expects me to be, but he seems satisfied that I'm still around.:|
