: Yoko Geolander H/T-S or Avon Ranger TSE
RarestRX 11-12-2008, 01:03 PM Hey,
Yep, time to buy some new tires. Budget is up to $450 installed so $100 each would be max.
If you answered C, please specify which tire you'd choose.
Size is 215/70-16.
Thanks!

Twilightzero 11-12-2008, 01:24 PM I'd go with the Geolandars, because I know them and loved them. They were my previous set of tires and I was highly pleased with them. I don't know the Avons personally but I haven't heard bad reviews of them.

I'll second that!
Twilightzero 11-12-2008, 01:27 PM BTW fill in your location, Rarest. Where you live helps a LOT with tire choice.
RarestRX 11-12-2008, 01:44 PM Hey,
Sorry about that missing data point.
I'm up in the Poconos, in PA.
So I'll be dealing with some ice and snow. Since my Element is FWD, I'm not going to be venturing out when it's a blizzard.
I've been running the Grabber UHP since I was living in Florida. They did okay up here, but I'd prefer something better with the snow.
Thanks!
Kevin ""
Twilightzero 11-12-2008, 01:51 PM The Yokos will do great then, I found them to be quite capable in snow & slush. :D
bassplayer5504 11-12-2008, 01:58 PM I took mine out in the blizzard we had last year and surely wasn't dissapointed.
Twilightzero 11-12-2008, 02:07 PM Granted I'm AWD, but I drive in every blizzard that comes through here (hobby of mine) and the Geos never let me down :D
fredmertz 11-12-2008, 02:40 PM Toyo Open Country H/T Better handling and not as noisy as Yoko.

NV_05_AWD 11-12-2008, 02:43 PM +1 on the Geo's, Mine are quiet?
utilit-E 11-12-2008, 03:13 PM I have Geos on my 2WD and I am pleased with them. Haven't had the opportunity to try them out in snow and slush yet but looking forward to. :)The Geolanders also cut the road noise in half for me versus my previous ones.

Good lawd, what the hell were you running before, Super Swampers?
spdrcr5 11-12-2008, 04:02 PM spend a few extra dollars and buy Nokian WR SUV's and then you'll be able to drive all winter no matter the weather. :-)

Ha Ha. Nope, they weren't swampers. I don't remember what brand. They were what came on my E and new tires were the first priority.
Mark C 11-13-2008, 08:09 AM Geos from discountiredirect dot com... $92 each, free shipping, no sales tax charged here in Georgia. Should come in under your budget.
erock1070 11-13-2008, 12:04 PM I'd compare the Uniform Quality Grades between the 2 tires and go from there.
Treadwear, Traction and Temperatures.
The higher the treadwear number the longer they will last if that is a concern.
Treadwears in the 300-400 range are usually entry level tires so they wont last that long.

Treadwear has a lot to do with hardness also. A softer tire will stick better but will wear faster. Harder tires will wear longer but generally have less grip.
SASKDEVIL 11-13-2008, 08:07 PM Have the Geos on my 04 EX and am completely dissatisfied with them in the winter. I ended up going to Michelin X-ICE for winter grips. Don't have an opinion on the Avon's tho....

the WR G2's are even nicer than the WR's. just put a set on my g/f's TM

poursuivant 12-02-2008, 02:16 PM I don't know if mr. Tire is near you but they're running a sale on the Geolanders- $127 per tire installed, buy three get fourth free.
As soon as we get our E.(come on credit union...) I'm swapping out the Wranglers.

I was gonna say that's sounding a bit high but with the free one it's quite reasonable!

bummer I must have missed the sale. I called a Mr Tire today.
they did quote me the $127.99 installed price but it wasn't buy 3 get 1 free.
erock1070 12-22-2008, 12:13 PM Just wanted to post back. I looked on the Mr. Tire site and they showed the Yokohama Geolander H/T-S in the 215/70/16's for $133 per tire (Buy 3 get 1 free deal). The local Mr. Tire honored the net price. So I opted for this.
Price out the door with valve stems, balancing, disposal of old tires, alignment ($59) and taxes was $493.03. I knew my E was out of alignment so I had to get that done. He said it was off .012" both front and rear (toed out).
Also they provide lifetime rotation (every 5K) which is key for me since I don't have a jack and jack stands.
I really like the looks of the Yok's. The swooshes at the top of the tire look really neat. Cant wait for summer to get the E cleaned up with some tire shine on them. Best I could describe the looks is rugged with slick styling. Much better looking than the Deuler 687's I had on there previously.
What pressure is everybody running their Yokohoma's at ?
I believe on the tire it states max pressure 40 psi. Mr. Tire put the recommended 32 psi front / 34 psi rear in them.
