Nothing better than Hakkas on the ice IMO. You might want to look at other Nokians as well if the price is scaring you. LOTS of reviews on the site, take a look at the FAQ section!

I think Toyo's are great snows, IMO. We are pricing at 1478$ CDN includes rims and installation/balancing etc.

Michelin Latitude X Ice. great wet and dry traction which Blizzaks are notoriously bad in. Great traction in snow, deep slush and on ice.
The owner of the tire store I use is a former SCCA regional champ and competes in ALMS and Grand Am. He remarked to me when I purchased the snow tires they gave better dry weather handling at 55 degrees than the Oem badyears.

Vredstein makes another excellent group of snow tires.

Depending on your conditions you want to research snow tires. Typically European tire company snow tires are better all around performers. Are you roads snow covered for most of the winter? Do you have sleet and freezing rain? How cold does it get at night? Average daily highs.

In my area of the US during the winter average daily high is about 40 degrees with lows in the low 20's. However, we do see 60 and 70 degree temps in Jan and Feb and a couple weeks of 50's. Unusual for the roads to be snow covered for more than a week.

Snowfall varies from less 5 inches to over 4ft w/sleet and ice mixed in.

Here winter runs from Dec 1 to Mar 1.

My thoughts exactly, and I have tire (tyre for Aus, Can, and UK) opinions. I've been happy with my MichelinLTX Mud and Snow. I don't like the poor dry perfomance of snow tires.

I SWEAR I have seen the Canadians spell it tyre! Now you are just confusing me, they spell it colour, flavour, aboot, ok the last one isn't true. But what about Grey? I actually need to know this stuff because my future sister in law is Canadian and the next family reunion is in Toronto.

You cant go wrong with the Nokians!

The wife's E has the Nokian WR Suv's on it. We love them. My E will have them the next time I need tires.

There is a group by for them on the site.

Got Nokian WR SUVs with 2002 CRV I purchased used and was very impressed - even compared to studded snows! One of those 'died' due to road hazard and that new pair had twice as much tread as those. Even more difference! Got a full set of them for my new-to-me 2006 E this Spring, when I bought car:), and bought used wheels from another EOCer, in anticipation of this Maine winter.
Do NOT run on them past your winter (into warm weather) driving needs- they will wear quickly.

I installed Hakkapelita R SUV in this October, first snow was is November. Still testing them, but what I can say right now - they are very stable on high speed, up to 90mph, they have rather short braking distance on wet snow, on wet road. And they are very quiet in comparison to stock Uniroyals.
Next test will be wet ice, I believe.

This is a interesting article if you are looking for a all weather tire good in the snow.

I'd go with the Firestone Winterforce's, they're cheap on Tire Rack.com, 64 bucks per tire, well back in August they were:-|

For a studless winter, I settled on Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow.

Given the winters are never really that bad where I am (especially in the past few years), the times when it did snow a considerable amount I was happy with my purchase. I even tried to intentionally lose traction on a straight road and they stuck very well w/o the 4WD system kicking in. I hear if you have the money to get the Michelins as nothing really compares, but if you're looking for something a little cheaper, I recommend these.

I had Blizzaks on my Porsche and VW Westy-liked them a lot, but they are winter only.
I don't remember them as being particularly expensive.
I currently have Goodyear Fortera Triple-Tred on my E. So far I like them, and looking outside at the blizzard, I'll find out how well they do in the snow today!

Go with Bridgestone Blizzak DM-Z3. If you're interested, I have a set for sale mounted on 15" wheels. Size is 215/75/15 for hardcore winter capabilities.

My wife is a NICU nurse and has to get to the hospital in any condition, no matter what. We bought her these, and she decided to trade in the Element for her dream car about a week later...

Go with smaller wheels/bigger tires for the best winter setup, and make your E look like the Tonka truck that it wants to be!

Well we finally went with the Nokian SUV R and we are delighted to say that the purchase price was well worth it. We paid $575.00 installed and with the way mother winter has treated us we are pleased that we chose the Haaka's. This is like a tank, I drive a v70 with Gizzy Nordfrost 5's and the Hakka'a are better, thanks everyone for your input.

Here in Central PA we tend to get quite a bit of snow and ice. I opted for a set of oversized Dunlop Grandtrek SJ6. I asked for the largest size that would fit on my E without rubbing. I was fitted with a set of P225/75 R16's and they are the bomb! I go everywhere and the added ground clearance is a big plus. I did notice a bit of performance degradation, but with the 5 speed manual it is no big deal.
