: Southern Oregon Coast Campout - Memorial Day 2009
Junebug 11-25-2008, 11:34 PM Grab your gear and GO COASTAL!
Friday, May 22nd through Tuesday, May 26th
Cape Blanco State Park (http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_62.php), Oregon (near Sixes)
Imperience and I decided to put together a group campout somewhere half-way-ish between us and found this great looking state park! Beautiful beaches and the amazing Pacific Ocean provide wonderful scenery.
We have reserved a group camp for the four nights, and the cost will be shared by number of cars. The total cost is $250, so it’ll be a very reasonably-priced stay even with a small group.
Dogs (always on leashes no longer than 6 ft., picked up after, and never left unattended) are welcome in the group camp and the park.
More information will be coming on this trip, but check your calendars and consider your budgets and make a plan to come on this great campout!
imperience 11-26-2008, 12:29 AM Woo hoo!
There will be Dutch Oven cooking, great campfires, and plenty of fun times.
Less than 6 months away too!
Farther 11-26-2008, 11:29 AM ... got the dutch oven, got the food, got the Corgis, got the banjo, got the teardrop ...i'd say we're ready to camp!
Count us in!
Doc and Farther
paulj 11-26-2008, 11:58 AM Are you sure you want to go there in May?
The roads are horrible :)

Junebug 11-26-2008, 12:14 PM Great to see the Farthers are on board! I thought you two might be interested. :)
And paulj, you're right ... looks like an awful time of year! We'll hate it. :D
Junebug 11-26-2008, 12:16 PM Since I'm pretty sure we can't update threads after 24 hrs anymore, I'll be keeping a list of attendees and will put a link in my sig to the current list post number.
For now:
1. Imperience
2. Junebug
3. Farther
Woo! Look at us go!
E_BikeR 11-29-2008, 02:15 AM Junie, you know we want to go.... it would be a bit of a stretch for T&B to make it. Have to wait and see.
Junebug 11-30-2008, 10:46 PM Junie, you know we want to go.... it would be a bit of a stretch for T&B to make it. Have to wait and see.
I do know ... too hard to get a driveable location for everyone. We'll do something in 2009 for sure!
dog-e 12-02-2008, 04:37 AM Sounds fun... That's WAY to far away for me to commit, but I might make it.
Junebug 12-02-2008, 09:24 AM Sounds fun... That's WAY to far away for me to commit, but I might make it.
Dogs like oceans!
I'll keep checking in with you. :)
Junebug 12-04-2008, 08:41 PM Time for an update! So the cool thing is that the showers and flush toilets are only .25 miles away from the group camp ... there are vault toilets at the group camp site. I think we are a hardy-enough group to handle that. :)
I love the ocean and its beauty, but am also aware of its power. Please read up on sneaker waves and ocean safety (http://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/PARKS/beach_tips.shtml)!
Junebug 12-04-2008, 08:42 PM Here's an updated list of current attendees. Two friends from work decided to come along and see what all the fuss is about. :)
1. Imperience (and Mel)
2. Junebug
3. Farther
4. Junebug's friends Rebecca and Jeff
outofd 12-05-2008, 05:07 PM We would love to join up with you for the campout. However, I notice on the website that only self-contained rv's are allowed. Seems the definition of self contained is not defined. We do not hook up to water or sewer, so maybe we are ok, but have heard from other CA owners that popups are not allowed under this restriction. I will try to contact the park for a better explanation. best wishes for the holidays, Bill, Barbara, Tazee and Teddy
paulj 12-05-2008, 07:23 PM When we stayed there in May a couple of years ago, right after Memorial Day, there was plenty of free space in the regular campground. But I'm sure the weekend itself was full.
There are 2 group camp areas, both inland from the main area. One designed for horse owners has pull in/through slots that will handle trailers (e.g. horse trailers). The other appears to just have a simple loop road, and an open space for tent camping. There may also be some tent camping under the trees. It's not obvious whether campers are allowed to park on the grass, or must stay on the loop road.
It appears that the main RV restriction is that there are no hookups. Since tents are allowed, popups should be fine. It's not like you are camping in a beach parking lot, or in bear country.
The 5 self contained rv count may be based on the available slots in the horse-camp area. The google maps satellite view pretty well confirms what the park map shows.
Junebug 12-05-2008, 08:04 PM Thanks for the information, Paul. Bill, if you want me to contact the park, I'd be happy to. I kinda have the same feeling as Paul, but would be more comfortable getting the thumbs up from the park folks.
The Farthers will have a teardrop and I've got my SUV tent (but may not set it up, depending), but the others are tent campers.
EL-MT 12-05-2008, 08:12 PM Junebug! Long time no see. You got the gears turning. After missing the Rocky Mountain meet, I've been looking for E trips that might be around. The GF and I are heading to Astoria/Portland over the Holidays, but possibly will be back out there this spring. Nothing for certain, but a trip down the coast would be cool. The GF's brother lives in Ashland. Maybe one of these days there will be a Glacier E meet. Imagine all of the E's driving up the Going to the Sun Road. Stay in touch.
outofd 12-06-2008, 12:46 AM Thanks Paul and Junebug for the info. I called the oregon campsite center and the fellow said popups were ok as long as they were self contained. We would love to join you, what do we have to do to make reservations or would we be already registered as part of the group. It will be a great transition from Death Valley in Feb to Oregon in May. BEST WISHES!!! BILL
Junebug 12-06-2008, 09:52 AM Bill - I will add you to our attendees list and we'll sort out the payment a little closer to campout time!

Add me to the list.
Ted and I love the Beach and Lupine.
Is the campsite on the beach or nestled in the hills?
Do we have a site to check it out?
xo Marilyn
P.S. e get more scones...yummy.
outofd 12-06-2008, 01:51 PM Thank You, Junebug. We are looking forward to it. If you notice, no more scone jokes from me as they deserve respect as a sign of your kindness. Maybe a convoy when the time comes. best wishes, bill
Junebug 12-06-2008, 04:59 PM More attendees! Woo!
1. Imperience (and Mel)

Bill, I see you pipe down about the scones once you might be getting some! haha ... yes, I plan to make dutch oven scones again.
Marilyn - check out the Cape Blanco link in the first post of this thread.
Junebug 12-06-2008, 05:01 PM And Marilyn, the campsite is not on the beach itself. We're up above and there are trails heading down. I'll post a Google map in the next few days so you can get a better visual.
imperience 12-08-2008, 12:35 AM Mmmaaaaaaarilyn!! lol...
I can't wait for this trip now! How many more days?
Junebug 12-08-2008, 12:58 AM I can't wait for this trip now! How many more days?
166, Andy.
bikerjosh 12-08-2008, 01:12 AM Don't know how I missed this, but I need to make this trip. Due to corperate downsizing and the rest of my team being "bulleted" I doubt I'll be able to make the DV trip, but this one might be in the cards.
How many cars will the group site support?
"There can be only one (at least in Norcal) OPM"
Biker(happy to still have a job)josh:D
Junebug 12-08-2008, 01:17 AM That'd be great if you could make it, Josh!
There is still plenty of room for cars and people. Just let me know if you're planning on coming and I'll add you to the list. We'll handle $$ closer to the campout.
I hope the job keeps goin' for ya!
imperience 12-08-2008, 01:17 AM Hi Josh!
I think that group camp can do 24-ish vehicles. How many are you planning on bringing? I don't think bikes are any extra. :D
slosport 12-08-2008, 01:18 PM Mmmaaaaaaarilyn!! lol...
I can't wait for this trip now! How many more days?
What fun!
You will get to meet TEDDYYYYYYYYYYY too.
He is a love.
This should be great fun.
I'll have to find a new tent the Condo leaked at Yellowstone:mad:
Are you counting down the days yet?
paulj 12-08-2008, 06:01 PM I'll have to find a new tent the Condo leaked at Yellowstone:mad:
or you could go 'native' and drape a blue poly tarp over the whole thing :)

Junebug 12-08-2008, 06:36 PM I thought the same thing ... "If she were from the PNW she'd just rig a blue tarp over it!"
Ahh, but buying a new tent is more fun than tarps and seam sealer. :)
Mels E 12-09-2008, 12:31 AM Count me in - I would love a reason to go up the coast, anything for a scone.
Junebug 12-09-2008, 12:34 AM Right on, Mel! I'll add you to the list.
Andy and I are discussing other tasty dutch oven recipes to add to our repertoire!
So far we have two Teddy's and two Mel's, so it's gearing up to be a goodie!

As you will remember junebuggie, the Condo was HUGE.
A major tarp expenditure or maybe three tarps plus tie downs and a latter to get it over the top would be a hassle.:-o
A smaller tent on Sale; in this rotten economy one can find good deals.
So... is it your experience that all tents leak?
BTW
Welcome Mel!
Farther 12-09-2008, 02:35 PM ... is it your experience that all tents leak?
Given enough time, use and/or improper storage they do.
Elemen-O-P 12-09-2008, 03:00 PM Wow talk about not paying attention! I knew this was happening but must've missed the thread...wow what a doofus!
LACY AND I ARE IN!!! Oh yea.. ZOE TOO!!! :D
So long as our schedules stay clear, we are amped up for some serious camping and one serious road trip!
Looks like we'll have to kick up our culinary skills a notch seeing how we'll be dining amongst the "DUTCH OVEN DOMINATORS". We've really gotta perfect our "Pudgie Pie" makers.. no more blueberry hockey pucks for me!
imperience 12-09-2008, 04:04 PM Yay Paul and Lacy!
You'll have to practice your pie skills before the trip. The hand crank blender will also be coming along with us.
NV_05_AWD 12-09-2008, 05:27 PM Anyone know if there are any boat launches near by?
Thanks in advance...
jdiane 12-09-2008, 06:25 PM hmm... this looks interesting...
Anyone know if Crater Lake will by snow-free by this time? (we gotta squeeze in at least a half-dozen other things on our oregon list for any one campout )
Junebug 12-09-2008, 08:39 PM Anyone know if there are any boat launches near by?
What kind of boat? Ocean kayak?
Junebug 12-09-2008, 08:44 PM Anyone know if Crater Lake will by snow-free by this time?
From the website (http://www.nps.gov/crla/planyourvisit/weather.htm), "From October to June, Crater Lake National Park is a snow-covered wilderness. November through April is assuredly snowy with poor visibility and fair to poor driving conditions, but wonderful skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. With snowfall still lingering on the ground in early July, winter defines Crater Lake National Park more than any other season."
Sounds like there will definitely be snow, just unknown how much!

paulj 12-10-2008, 11:32 AM For those who want to see some sights on the way to or from the event:
We camped here in May 2007 right after Memorial Day. Earlier in the trip we'd been in far eastern Oregon (Succor Ck, Steens Mtn, Jordan Valley, Snake River). We drove into the Cascades near Crater Lake, but camped and looked at waterfalls in the area north of the park. Then we drove down 62 to Medford (more waterfalls), and camped close to the California border. Memorial Day itself we took Bear Camp Rd over the coast range. This is the road that James Kim got lost on (was that 3 years ago now?). It's paved, but distinctly windy mountain driving, much more fun in an Element than an RV, and better in May than November, better in the day than at night.
There are sightseeing opportunities along the Rogue River and Gold Beach (such as rafting down the river, and jet boats up). We also liked a walk in a Myrtle tree forest (lots of myrtle wood craft shops on this part of the coast). Then it was north to Cape Blanco.
Camping is on a bluff above the ocean. To the south of the campground there is a narrow access road to the shore. Here the beach is broad and sandy, with lots of drift wood, and potentially good size breakers well off shore. There are also steep paths to the beach near the lighthouse. We did not see any boaters, but did see some surf fishers. The access road to the park follows a river estuary, with a day use area near the mouth of the river. I don't know if there are boating opportunities along this river.
Further north is the town of Bandon, which has nice shopping and dining options. We drove inland on 42 to Roseburg from here. There are more coastal sights to the north, including a large sand dune park. To the south of Gold Beach, you start getting into the California coastal Redwood area.

Holy Crap those are some nice pics!! :???: Sadly I've never been to Oregon, so those pics make me all giddy thinking about seeing that beauty for myself during the campout! THANKS FOR POSTING!
Gautch 12-21-2008, 01:36 PM Well we aren't snow campers (or campers that like the cold much), so as we get closer we'll watch the weather and see how it goes.
This does sound fun! The one at Humboldt was pretty awesome! Any talk about a pot-luck meal? That was a great way to meet everyone!
So if we do go, it will be Josh and Angela. Plus two dogs, Sarah and Mallory.

imperience 12-21-2008, 04:21 PM Wow, Sarah is all grown up. We should be having beautiful spring weather! And it doesn't rain much in OR with all the global warming, right? :D
Elemen-O-P 12-22-2008, 11:26 AM Oh and yes that is Sarah from the Humboldt trip:
OMG!!! She got biiig!!
Great, this means that Zoe will have other pups to wrestle around with that are more appropriately in her weight class. It was kinda one-sided last time in Humboldt.

Welcome! No little ones signed up at this point, just lots of four-legged "little ones." We take all kinds, though, so don't let all our adult-ness scare you off. Several of us are plenty immature. :)

Can we feed them lots of sugary snacks and soda so that they get all wound up? :D Of course we could probably do that to Marilyn too and see if she gets hyper!

From the first message in the thread:
Grab your gear and GO COASTAL!
I don't see anything in the thread suggesting a change, so unless Junebug or someone else chimes in I think those are still accurate.
Dr. Farther 04-05-2009, 09:11 PM Hey thanks! ....and we'll see ya' there (with teardrop in tow)!
Doc, Farther, and the furkids
BC246T 04-05-2009, 10:26 PM Thought I'd add some info here for your planning - I lived in Port Orford (about ten miles south of Cape Blanco).
Be prepared for wind. Lots of wind. Cape Blanco is very well located for a lighthouse, and that also means it it well located for wind. First, it is perhaps the furthest westerly place in the continental US, meaning it has no land mass/mountains/etc. blocking the winds from either the north or the south, and it is high on a bluff which increases the prevailing wind speed as it comes up over the bluff.
I lived in a house above the bluff facing south over the harbor at Port Orford and during storms we had fish blow into our front yard and we were about 200 feet above sea level. During storms there would be sea foam blowing down US101, the main street of town, and it would pile up against the south side of the buildings like snow drifts.
In all the time I lived there there were only about ten days without wind. If it is fair the winds blow from the north, and when it storms the winds blow from the south. It is what it is.
I'm not trying to scare you off, but be prepared to have to tie things down and always be aware of wind. I've seen tourists pull into Battle Rock state park in Port Orford, park facing south, and the wind pull the car door out of their hand. Lots of cars damaged that way.
The Cape Blanco campground is in among the trees so the wind is mitigated there, but it will still be noticeable. Plan accordingly.
The southern Oregon coast is a great place to visit, tons of stuff to do/see, and great people. You will enjoy the trip. :-)
paulj 04-05-2009, 11:12 PM When we camped there shortly after Memorial a couple of years ago, weather was calm (hot in central valley). The coast had the classic breeze from the ocean during the day, reverse direction at night as the land cooled. I chose a site on the inside of the loop closest to the ocean. The breeze off the ocean (through the trees) was strong enough to make it chilly at the campsite, but not enough to blow things around.
The group site is a bit further away from the bluff and first line of wind blown spruce and pine, but also a bit more in the open.
Junebug 04-06-2009, 12:11 AM Thanks for the info everyone! I was taking advantage of a fantastic Northwest day today, so wasn't near the computer. Yes, the dates are as stated.
I'll pass on the info about the wind to my friends coming along, and will bring extra tie-downs in case they are needed.
Wind info will also be good for cooking planning - better to be prepared than taken by surprise (and hungry)!
Junebug 04-12-2009, 09:12 PM Hey campers! We're putting together a potluck night. Do most folks plan to show up on Friday? If so, we'll do potluck on Saturday night.
dog-e 04-12-2009, 09:18 PM So I've been on the tentative list, but I think I'm going to have to officially say I can't make it. Just a bit too broke to take the time off work and pay for the gas. Everybody enjoy the trip, though!
Junebug 04-12-2009, 09:19 PM Well that stinks, but is totally understandable. I think lots of folks are looking a lot more carefully at trips this year. (But let's do something local this summer if we can!)
imperience 04-12-2009, 09:26 PM So we are looking at doing a group potluck for Saturday night.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v165/andyc104/DSC03046.jpg
Today I made the best ever Dutch Oven Pulled Pork with cole slaw. <Paula Deal> Y'all are going to love this. </Paula Dean>
Elemen-O-P 04-13-2009, 12:04 PM Wow!! Does that ever look tasty!!
'course, if you quote Paula Dean...ya gotta have lots of "buttah" around! :)
Lacy and I are planning on starting our drive up late Thursday night...maybe find a halfway stopping point (preferable dog friendly) that we can catch a couple hours sleep. So, if all goes according to plan, we should be at the campground by 'noon at the latest.
This is coming up pretty quick, guess I better start figuring out something to cook for the potluck.... don't worry Andy, lacy's planning on making her pistachio bread for ya. ;-)
imperience 04-14-2009, 12:54 AM I think that we are going to get an early start on Friday morning and head up. Hopefully I can get some passenger seat nap time in.
Elemen-O-P 04-16-2009, 12:06 PM Looks like our route to Cape Blanco is going to run us through Redding. Sure its the boring route, but it is the fastest and this'll be the longest car ride for Zoe so far. Screw the humans, the dog has to be comfortable! :D
So, we'll be zonking out at the dog friendly Holiday Inn for the night and then continue on to the camping spot the following morning. According to google maps, the remainder of the trip should only be about 5.5hrs...which translates to 6.5 for us. I had no idea the Element produced its own space-time continuum warpy thingy...
outofd 04-19-2009, 09:25 PM Dear Imperience; Hope you do not mind but I am using you picture of the pork sandwick as my desktop picture. It is beautiful, but I am always hungry, See you soon in OR, best wishes, Bill, Barbara, Teddy #2 and Tazee
Junebug 04-21-2009, 05:19 PM Howdy, Campers! We're getting close to this great trip! Here's the updated list of attendees. I'll be PM'ing everyone soon to check in and go over a few details.

Today I made the best ever Dutch Oven Pulled Pork with cole slaw. <Paula Deal> Y'all are going to love this. </Paula Dean>
Man... Now you have me rethinking not coming. That looks like a damn tasty meal!
imperience 04-26-2009, 02:33 AM Man... Now you have me rethinking not coming. That looks like a damn tasty meal!
Come!
I'll make you 2 sandwiches!
Junebug 04-26-2009, 05:26 PM The city of Port Orford, and our campground specifically, made May's issue of Sunset Magazine! Yay! The cover story is "The 50 Best Campgrounds: Gorgeous Sites in Oregon, Washington, and Beyond." The state park is mentioned there, and another story on the cover is "Get Away to Oregon's Hidden Seaside Town." I'll probably do lunch at the fish and chips place mentioned in that article about Port Orford.
What great timing!

Junebug 05-01-2009, 11:02 PM Yay, Eric! Thanks for checking in. Looks like we've got a good group of campers ready to roll.
So far the only group activity planned is the potluck on Saturday night. Join us and show your stuff!!
Elemen-O-P 05-03-2009, 02:58 PM Looks like Lacy and I will be joining the dutch oven group. Swung by Bass Pro in Manteca (only 1 of 2 in Cali) and found a helluva deal on various sized ovens.
We'll be going back for a "how to cook in a dutch oven" class on the 16th, to try and catch up to the rest of you seasoned pros. :D
Junebug 05-03-2009, 09:29 PM Yay!! More DO's!! Can't wait to see/eat what you guys learn!
terwie 05-11-2009, 06:05 PM Hey guys!
Just figured out my schedule and I can totally make it for a camping trip for memorial day weekend! I didn't think I could, so I was putting off posting :p (I’m such a procrastinator) :p
Peggy loves car rides, and I'm sure she would love to meet the other doggies!!
hummm....I wonder how long it takes to go from the canada border to southern oregon? ...with lots of stops for Peggy of course!
Anyone from up North want to meet up and caravan to oregon?
68927
yea for road trips!!! (just don't let me lead the way on trails....)
terwie
Junebug 05-11-2009, 08:33 PM Yay! Yes, there's room! I'll add you to the list.
Note the group dinner/potluck that Saturday night ... and I'll get a final cost for each car and try to post by next Wednesday.
Glad you can make it!
My estimate is around 8 hrs driving time (without lunch) from near SeaTac, so that might narrow it down a little for ya.

Avis VanRental 05-12-2009, 03:15 AM Oh man! I'm going to be in Tampa that weekend for derby. Otherwise I'd so be there! Did the Oregon Coast thing 2 summers ago and it was awe-inspiring.
Junebug 05-12-2009, 03:17 PM Can not wait!!!! Convoy from SEATAC area?? Best wishes, Bill & Barbara Outofdbox
I'm going to be in a two-car caravan with my friends who are coming along. We're leaving from somewhere Auburn-ish around eight-ish but we (obviously) haven't nailed that down quite yet. I'll admit I'm a little gun-shy about coordinating a bigger caravan for such a long drive, along with the fact that I'm out of town until Monday and will be lucky to get my rear in the car with some camping/cooking gear in time to leave Friday morning! I'm not up for it this time.
Maybe Bill and Barbara can hook up with terwie? You both have dogs, too, which might work well for stops and such - have at it!
Junebug 05-12-2009, 03:22 PM We're just over a week away from this campout! Yay!! We've got ten cars scheduled to come, which makes calculating the cost nice and easy ... $250 total, divided by ten, $25 per car for the group camp. That's $25 total, Friday-Tuesday or however long you're there. Please bring cash and exact change and pay me.
If someone can't make it or we add more cars, we'll just figure it out there ... I'm not in this to make or lose money! :)
outofd 05-12-2009, 04:01 PM Makes sense on not doing a convoy. I just returned from my second trip this year from southern Calif, this time Barbara will share the driving. Being the old timer, I have to stop more often than the puppies. lol. Price for camping on a holiday weekend is outstanding!!! See all of you there, be safe driving!
terwie 05-13-2009, 12:46 AM yeah, it's hard to convoy over long distances--so just wave if you see the Black E with Peggy and I in it! And $25 per car for the whole weekend is awesome!!! Sweeeet!!!
Hummm....I'm gonna have to get started on making a bed platform soon....or just take a tent.... haven't decided yet.
I'd love to make this one--someone posted this on another page here:
68978
68979
yea for pot lucks! I'm excited!! :D:D:D
I'm still up in the air about going. Going over to open the canyon this weekend. So it depends on when I get back if I feel like driving down. and if I remember to grab my camping stuff while out there. I have all my extra stuff stored for guests. Anyone want a practice camping run come on out.
Amy
Elemen-O-P 05-14-2009, 03:23 PM looks like we might have a friend coming along as well... so put us down for 3 humans, 1 dog and 2 cars... she hasn't been camping in a really long time, so everyone play nice! :D
Miss Ellie & Co. 05-14-2009, 04:14 PM Paul - Dang I sure wish we could make this camping gig with you and Lacy.
Take lots of pics and see if you can convince J-Bug into going to Tahoe in September.
Say hi to her, Mels E, Andy & Mel, Slosport, the Farthers, outofd and pat all the camp doggies for us!
See youse guys at Lake Tahoe in September!
Junebug 05-14-2009, 04:46 PM Yay for more campers! We'll just divide up how many actually make it and handle any necessary refunds later ... but somewhere around $25/car.
And Paul, telling us your friend hasn't camped in awhile only ensures that we can ALL over-pack ... just in case she needs something! haha
Gene, I'll be squirreling away my vacation hours in hopes of an epic road trip in 2010 ... and if the work gods point my way, I'll be driving through LA later this year!
Amy - come on down! Srsly, what better way than a fun road trip/campout to enjoy yourself while unemployed?

I will try. I have had a response to a job app. (DANG) and have to take some tests next week. So depending on time I'll work on it. If I'm going down that way I have some friends I want to stop and see wither on the way down or home. I'm not sure if I'd bring the dogs .. Rosie is to much of a girly girl to do any real camping. Frank is to wild and would have to be watched 24/7. Maybe Harley ... ???
Junebug 05-15-2009, 10:38 AM Dogs are required to be on-leash at all times, and considering the proximity to cliffs and the mighty ocean, leashes keep doggies safe! Harley would be your best bet, 'cept if he runs away, who would go find HIM? hahaha
outofd 05-16-2009, 02:33 PM We have decided to leave thursday and stop in Eugene OR for the night. Us elderly folks can only drive so far per day. We might get to Cape Blanco early but check in is I believe 4pm. Are the reservations in Ms Junebugs name or ?
Is there a particular part of the campgrounds that is reserved for our group? Are we there yet??? Best wishes to all. Bill, Barbara, Teddy and Tazee outofd

The reservations are in my name (Trina Cook), and we're in the group camp. If I remember, I'll call down there once I'm home and make sure we're all set with everything. Can't wait!
Elemen-O-P 05-18-2009, 12:36 PM wait... check in isn't until 4pm?!
I guess that means we get to sleep in on Friday morning in Redding. I was really hoping to be the early birds and be at the campground by noon. The earlier we're setup the more time there is for exploring... *sigh* oh well.. :-(
outofd 05-18-2009, 12:52 PM According to their brochure, check out is 1pm and check in is 4pm. On our visits to WA parks, they would check is as soon as they finished clean up from prior night campers. We will be getting there early and have lunch in truck until we are checked in. See you there. best wishes, bill
paulj 05-18-2009, 03:51 PM Since this is a group site, check in probably is different than when using individual sites. It may be, for example, that Junebug has responsibility to deal with the host or ranger, and you deal with her.
Most likely you'll coming over from I5 on OR 42 (south of Roseburg). If early you might want to stop and browse in Bandon. It would be a good lunch stop. Also look at Myrtle wood work shops along the way.
The Weather Service is predicting partly sunny, 50ish. I'm guessing you will have a cool breeze off the ocean during the day, maybe even some fog right along the shore. That'll die off in the evening, as temperatures even off between land and sea. Current satellite imagery shows a band of clouds/fog right offshore, and clear skies over land.
Junebug 05-18-2009, 04:20 PM It may be, for example, that Junebug has responsibility to deal with the host or ranger, and you deal with her.
Darned right! You deal with ME! haha ... I'll call the site today or tomorrow and get the scoop on check-in. Will post soon!
eric.barcus 05-18-2009, 05:15 PM JUNE! update!
eric+charley and guest :)
excited for my first meet up
Junebug 05-18-2009, 05:52 PM Cool, eric! It'll be around $25/car, depending on total cars showing up for sure. Join us for the group potluck Saturday night!
Junebug 05-18-2009, 06:07 PM Okay, here's the scoop on checking in. We're reserved at Group Camp 50 under Katrina Cook. The site is paid in full now, so feel free to ask if it is available when you arrive ... although check-in is still four p.m. I'll collect money from folks once we get a solid car count.
There are four fire pits, four water spigots, and four picnic tables. Unless they are the size of the big un's at Humboldt, folks may want to bring an extra table for your food prep and such.
I'm figuring to get there by five p.m., depending on travel conditions (read: stops for food and relief). Yay! Friday! Friday!
eric.barcus 05-18-2009, 10:16 PM EXCITED! jsut got done sleeping on the beach in bham for my birthday and saw a metor shower! what odd timing! maybe we all will be as blessed :)
Looks like I'm going ... Harley might have a case to work in Portland.
Don't worry I would keep them on a leash .. it just for any reason I wanted to leave them .. Frank would bark and scream like a banshee !!! Plus he is not good in the car for very long .. going the 3 hours over to my property is about all he can handle.
So keep a look out for Harley and me.
I didn't grab my camping stuff ... so I might need to use someone's cookstove and stuff ... LOL.
Has anyone started a list for the potluck on Sat.? I want to bring my shrimp mac salad but worried about it in the cooler that long. ???
slosport 05-19-2009, 10:33 PM Ted and I have to stay home; life gets too overwhelming at times.:-(

Love to see and hear all about the trip.
September in Tahoe is now our goal... I hope to see many of you fine "Camping Fools" there.

We'll no doubt have a good time, but are disappointed you and Teddy won't be there to share it. Hope you can make it to Tahoe! Doc
Junebug 05-20-2009, 11:28 AM Marilyn, sorry we won't see you! I was hoping to call out, "Teddy!" and see which little white dog came a-running first. :)
Mels E 05-20-2009, 11:58 AM Slosport, sad to hear you and Teddy are not able to make it :-(
Looking forward to seeing everyone soon. I have been in the E for the past week traveling in the Northwest (Left Fri the 15th). We were heading to a concert at "the Gorge" in Washington so did a long drive for that Sat concert (820 miles) it can be done! We then got over to Spokane to see a family member and now are on route to Seattle for some fun and a few quick visits with a few friends.
We hope to be at the camp ground Friday but there is a small possibility that we will be there on Saturday but in time for the potluck! I will post as the time gets closer on updates. Looking forward to meeting and seeing some of you again and meeting new friends. By the way I have a partner on this trip, my husband (Steve) who is making a rare trip with me in the E as he is not a "camper" but coming along for a change.
Thanks Trina for setting this all up for us!
Sent from Ellensburg, WA
Junebug 05-20-2009, 12:50 PM We get to meet Mel's imaginary husband Steve! Yay! ;)
Enjoy the Northwest while you're here!
terwie 05-20-2009, 04:57 PM Hey,
Peggy (dog) and I will arrive saturday morning...unless we decided to drive the whole thing Friday afternoon/night...we'll see how bad the traffic is... :) 9.5 hours is enough w/out traffic!
Oh, I plan on bringing some fruit (grapes?) and some entree (pot stickers/rice?) for the potluck on Saturday. I just haven't decided and have been to costco yet.
See u guys then!!
terwie
"Ellen"
Elemen-O-P 05-21-2009, 01:58 AM ok...grocery shopping is done. Went to Costco, Super Wal-mart and Safeway...hopefully that's enough for the weekend. :D
We've also inventoried and semi-staged...tomorrow afternoon will be spent attaching the cargo box to the roof rack and checking off items (for a second time) as they're stuffed into the E and our friends Armada.
We really hoped that this trip was going to define our ability to purge the unnecessary items from previous trips. We'll see how well we did when we load it all in. If I can still see out the rear view mirror...I think we'll have accomplished something.
Wish I would of known where you were .. you could of stayed at my property. The Gorge is really close. See you Sat.
Amy
Junebug 05-21-2009, 12:53 PM From the State Parks confirmation letter.
DIRECTIONS
Cape Blanco is 28 miles south of Bandon. Turn right at highway sign and proceed west 5 miles. It is 80 miles n. of California border (Brookings). And 5 miles north of Port Orford. Turn left at highway sign. Go west 5 miles to park entrance.
Junebug 05-22-2009, 12:11 AM Let's DO THIS!
eric.barcus 05-22-2009, 12:10 PM i will not be "doing this" :sigh: huge let down, i have to work, way to go corparate. Bright side, its holiday pay, almost 700$ a day, next time folks
Miss Ellie & Co. 05-22-2009, 07:30 PM I'm expecting many awesome pics from this camping crew!
I can't be there in person so please be sure to post pics every 15 min or so - thank you. ;-)

Teddy is interested in his name sake and all the other pups.
I for one want a pic of this husband of Mel's!
Happy Camping Fools!

I'm so confused... you did what?
slosport 05-26-2009, 01:47 AM Let me double that!
Let me be the first to say .. WE HAD A BLAST !!!!
The wind was chilly, but the sun was shining!!! I'm still full from the Sat. potluck ... so much food !!
Thank you Trina for putting this all together !!!
Pic's will have to wait, i don't have my cable.
We are taking our time getting home. Cottage Grove is a cool little town !!! And, I did get to see a herd of 14 elk today.

Junebug 05-26-2009, 08:35 PM I'm home! I'll let Paul or Andy explain the comment earlier. ;)
Amazing trip. It was truly everything I hoped for!
Elemen-O-P 05-26-2009, 09:04 PM I guess I get to explain the comment..
On the 101 somewhere between "incest" and "you got a pretty mouth" was an old converted RV bus that had a giant board mounted to the front and rear that said "No Money, No Pot, Broke Down".
Wasn't exactly the kind of roadside attraction I was expecting from Oregon...but hey, it gave me a chuckle. Melanie was going to take a pic apparently, but the "tenants" were sunning themselves on the roof in some lawnchairs.
I'll have pics up maybe later tonight... still recouperating from being on the road nearly 12hrs yesterday. Its amazing how much longer things take when you can't feel your butt! :D
Farther 05-26-2009, 10:06 PM Doc, Rosie, Jack and I are home. We stopped for a last hike on the beach and a short one in the Red Woods. It seems that Jack has a taste for sea anemonies, star fish and kelp which is available at low tide and for a certain grass that grows in the Red Wood forest. The little guy must have been starving. Rosie likes the grass too. All of us had a great time. What great company to camp with!!
imperience 05-26-2009, 11:43 PM Someday I think I would like a Corgi. :D
I think that the broke down hippie bus was in California. Didn't seem to be as many dirty hippies in Oregon as I thought! I'm thinking now that I may have to move to the Pacific Northwest someday.
Had a great trip, will upload the rest of the pictures tomorrow.
Can't wait for the next camping extravaganza!

Dr. Farther 05-27-2009, 12:31 AM So far I know how to upload only 6 pics at a time ...can anyone tell me if there's a way to upload a couple dozen at once???
In the meantime ....
Doc
It's all about the dogs ...
i just realized I didn't get a picture of Zoe. :-(
_jea_ 05-27-2009, 10:46 AM It's all about the dogs ...
That's why I am lurking in the thread that I don't belong to :D. Great pictures guys and I am happy you had a blast! Waiting for more pics. :)
camp pictures .. having a group camp was great.
Yeah .. Zoe's in there !!
I was the only one that car camped...
Miss Ellie & Co. 05-27-2009, 11:07 AM Way to go Amya!
Nice pics - keep em coming!

Yes .. they are. I think Junebug got a picture of them.
Miss Ellie & Co. 05-27-2009, 11:31 AM Wow! Sure looks like a beautiful Group Camp, Junebug picked a winner!
So nice to see so many of my favorite camping buds altogether doing what they do best... having a great time!
Lotsa dogs too. :D
The Corgis Pack looks fit and flealess - no doubt they provided exceptional fun.
Love the Farther's new Tear Drop Trailer !!!! it's gonna look real good camped under the Ponderosa Pines at Lake Tahoe
Nice beard John!

Dr. Farther 05-27-2009, 11:12 PM Ellen, great photos!
paulj 05-27-2009, 11:33 PM Did you drive down to the beach via that narrow paved road at the south end of the campground?
Two years ago we drove down to the end of the pavement, but did not try the track beyond that - except on foot. Conditions of that track probably change with each storm, especially the path through the driftwood.
http://www.pbase.com/paulj3/image/80371011/medium.jpg
Also comparing one of my pictures with the shot of the rocks north of the lighthouse, it appears that surf was up more this year. Someone mention a bit of wind.
Mels E 05-28-2009, 12:06 AM We got back today from the trip. We had such a fun time as everyone else did! Steve (the now, not so imaginary husband to you all) will be coming back for more trips as he found camping was not that bad after all when you have great people to share the experience with!

I took the route down to the beach past the camp ground... probably wasn't the smartest thing I've done... the steep path after the paved road had a "huge" hole for one side of the tires to get into, along with a protruding rock for the other wheels to get jacked up on....everything shifted quite a bit!!!
but once I was down on the beach, it was beautiful!!! I remembered to only drive on the wet sand so that I didn't get stuck, strange thing is that driving on sand felt a lot like driving on snow/ice...strange!!!
I didn't spend much time down on the beach...I was a little worried about making it past that incline back to the paved road....none-the-less I was able to gun it, and rock my self out and over it! (I'm pretty sure those jeeps on the beach were laughing their **** off)
Ahhh...it just goes along with me driving over the empty metal fire pit back at the camp ground....ooopppssss (just moved it a bit :) ) ... and backing into a log at the Lynden City Park, and going too far on unmarked trails getting nice long scraches on the doors at a EOC Mountain loop hwy trip last fall... amazingly my E has only had minor blemished from what I've put him through!!!
tough little honda's they are!!

I don't remember seeing that trail when I went around....was that at the north side of the lighthouse?
Mels E 05-28-2009, 12:29 AM Steve and I continued our vacation from Cape Blanco going on to Eureka (Humboldt)area for 2 days. To build anticipation for the day we go back, here are pictures of a place that is beloved to all, either in story or via personal visitation.

I know from experience that campsites can be dangerous. Over the years I've dented the side of car squeezing between trees, pushed a fire pit (with the E), and slowly backed into a sign post or two.
My picture is from the track that continues south from the end of the paved road along the base of the bluff. I think you drove on to the beach via an opening in the driftwood closer to the pavement. This track leads to an gap further south.

It clearly was a puppy fest ...and Teddy can expect another in Tahoe! The Corgis worked overtime snagging morsels from all those Dutch ovens.

I forgot to tell everyone, I stopped at the Hughes house on my way out. Forget the tour guide ... there was the cutest little old lady who was born in the house on the other side of the river. She was telling great stories about what the house was like when she was little and what living conditions where like. It was even her 85th birthday !!!!
Miss Ellie & Co. 05-29-2009, 10:42 AM I'm really enjoying these pics!
Nice job guys.
The weather looked interesting - T-Shirts one day, dressed like Churpas the next... chilly nights?
Bill & Barb's new Ridgeline and Tent Trailer - wow!
Dogs everywhere as usual - can't call it camping without them.
Mel's pics of our Williams Grove Group Camp at Humboldt Redwoods State Park makes me all teary-eyed.
It look's as though the Governator might be closing all of California's state parks this year -
but don't worry about the Lake Tahoe Camping Jamboree in September as our campground there is private.
Margaritas and Junebug's "Meat-on-a-Stick" (you can't beat her meat but you can heat and eat it!!)
Paul looks like he was busy and buzzy with cooking and snapping photos - very commendable!
more blatherings later - got go to werk.

All Done!
Miss Ellie & Co. 05-31-2009, 08:53 PM A study was done recently where a Twinkie was left on a shelf for 2 years and still remained soft and spongy -
meaning that even bacteria wanted nothing to do with them.
In the event of a nuclear holocaust, only c*ck roaches and Twinkies will survive.
Nice pics Andy!
E_BikeR 06-07-2009, 02:36 PM Nice photos youz guyz! I grew up in Oregon, and it looks as cold as I remember on the coast. Seeing Lacy with the parka and hat reminds me of those coastal temps! We wanted to make this trip, but was at the other end of the country looking at things like this:
So MANY great pictures!
Now I need to add Oregon to my list of places to go!:D

It was only chilly the first two days (but cleared up both afternoons) ... after that, blue skies all the way, baby! We really lucked out with the weather, IMHO! (But then I'm used to the Washington coast in the off-season. :D)
