Once again I look to the Gods of the ELEMENT for answers!! My other car is a 99 Mercury Cougar and the cigarette lighter port is hot all the time without the ignition having to be on. I like that! Does anyone know how I would go about making my Element the same way front and back??

Search the boards, I believe there are threads with directions on how to do this sort of thing.

I guess you are never satisfied...if you actually search the boards, you would have found this: http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4652&highlight=12v+outlet

and that would have pointed you to this: http://gaia.ecs.csus.edu/~joel/fun/Element/RearOutletWire/rearoutletwire.htm

Which is a post from ProfJoel.

You also would have found this: http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4640&highlight=12v+outlet

Hey NVRSATISFYD, I had the page bookmarked along with several others since Im always reading posts. I love EBP, its got lots of sparkle and looks really good clean. The vector console is a 12V cooler/warmer console. Its available at Target or Wal-Mart. I dont have pics but I will take some tomorrow with the digital and post them.

I love my EBP too! It does look great clean, but doesn't stay clean looking long. I also have the Vector cooler, but haven't put it in the E yet. I bought the 4.5 gallon model on sale at Meijer for $59.00. Later that day I saw it at Targer for $80.

Now all I have to do is turn on the 12-volt outlets full-time.

Has anyone determined how long we can leave the Vector cooler plugged in without the ignition on, after modifying the outlets?

I haven't really gotten a chance to try it yet. I will post when I do.

It says it keeps food down up to 45 degrees below the ambient temperature or up to 120 degrees F depending on ambient temperature.

Anyone else use one yet?

It does keep stuff cold, i used it for beverages while traveling cross country, that is the only time i ever use it is on long trips. I took pics of it today but i cant find the cable to unload the images to my laptop so as soon as i find it i will post them.

I've used one of these coolers for several years in my modified Dodge full-sized van.
They typically draw about 3 amps.
With the TINY battery that the E has, I'd be a bit cautious about prolonged periods of motor-off use!
In my Dodge, I have a full RV battery setup with two deep cycle batteries which can be selected independently or together, and which are charged as the vehicle runs, when I'm plugged in to 110vac, and also by two 15 watt solar panels on the roof which yield a total of about 2 amps.
I will be looking into installing a larger battery tray and battery in my E before getting too serious about using it as a camper.
Alternately, I may go the RV battery route with the solenoid charging system, though the RV battery would consume precious interior space.

BMW Bob is too polite.
He just suggests that you might be careful. Im telling you right out these ideas of running that 12 volt outlet continuousy for your cooler sucks to much current for most any battery system. Espectially if your camping. I would not want any drain on my battery (knowing thats your only way home) at any time yet alone while out in the boonies. Man thats veritually insuring a hot brewsky not to mention being stranded witha dead battery. For all the engineer types out there you can't compete with good cooler with ice for genuine cold anyway. Leave that cotton picken 12 volt on igniten only. And get a good cooler. or just run your coolers for on the road period then switch to an ac source with up for the night. How bout the goof ball who wants continuous 12 volts to use his Element as a party center out in the boonies. Man that's crasy or what.

Heck, I don't even have a cooler, and I carry an extra 12V jumper battery in the cargo area, just in case.

I just rewired my outlets mainly to charge my cellphone while in work. Or for my 12V compressor to pump up a tire or ball or whatever. Not sold on the cooler/warmer idea, Id have to find someone who has one that I know. That way I can tell if it keeps things cold enough to warrant the hefty pricetag!

The fuses which supply the accessory outlets are always on, since the relays, which are controlled by the ignition switch, are after these fuses. I used a Littlefuse Add-a-Circuit kit, which turns one fuse slot into two- does not void manufacturers warranty. The added circuit is always on, and protected by its own fuse. Ran a wire under the console, drilled a hole, and mounted a new flush outlet on the front surface of the console. I also would try to avoid straining the battery with a cooler when the engine isn't running. In my case, the always -on is primarily to keep my GPS from going to battery, and then automatically shutting off when I make brief stops for gas, meals, etc. Also useful for similar reasons with my PDA, MP3 player etc.
