: How to stream audio from an iPhone app to my radio

Hi,

I have a fantastic iPhone application called WunderRadio that allows me to listen to radio stations from all over the world.

To connect my iPhone to the radio in my '08 LX, I am thinking about replacing the OEM HU with an aftermarket radio that has an iPod interface (I really like the Pioneer DEH-P7000BT, thoughts?). I am wondering whether connecting the iPhone via the iPod interface would stream the audio from the app or whether I would have to plug it in via the AUX connection as well.

Long story short, does the iPod interface of Pioneer radios support the iPod function only or does it also stream audio from an iPhone app?

Thanks,
GS

There are a bunch of iPhone mounting devices that charge the phone AND have a 3.5 mm out that will hook into the Element's aux 3.5mm input. It all comes down to how pretty you want it.

Sorry, I just noticed that you have an LX...!!! (edit)

I guess the LX doesn't have an AUX input.

Anyway, I have a Pioneer Avic-D3 and when the iPhone is connected, it goes into iPod mode. In order to get the line-out from other apps, you have to press "Video" on the Pioneer's screen, which releases the head unit's control of the phone while keeping the audio connected through the dock connector. I don't think this would work with a non-video equipped head unit.

Yeah, sounds like I will have to use the AUX input for that.

Thanks guys.

I don't know how it works with the iPhone, or Touch, but I just got one of these:

Check it out. Its newly released (mine showed up on Thursday, one of the first shipped). It has on-board bluetooth connectivity, on board USB2 for HD use or iPod use, works as a controller and also has an aux if you'd prefer that. It potentially gives you 3 ways to stream the radio you want...

Mine was installed yesterday and I've been loving it already. I also had 4 Polk DB651s installed as well. The whole thing is a major upgrade in sound and connectivity. I'm using mine with a 160g classic. :)

I was considering 2 options: 1) adding an AUX to the OEM HU or 2) upgrading to an aftermarket receiver like you did. I was considering the Dual XHD6425 (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_070XHD6425/Dual-XHD6425.html?search=xhd6425&tp=5684 and some of the Kenwoods since I like their subtle looks.

Bottom line, listening mostly to NPR and talk radio I prefer the factory look over the improved sound quality.

Thanks for the recommendation though!

Well, I don't know how subtle the Kenwood is, but it definitely solved some problems I was having with my stock LX unit. First off, It gets rid of the clutter of having a pile of CD's or other junk around. I looked at other units, but didn't want to have any half-way mods, you know, drill holes, bad fits, etc., I also, don't want to drive with loose hanging wires. I too find myself listinging to NPR for about 95% of my radio needs, but wanted something for my 160g iPod...that way I'm my own radio station. The bluetooth connectivity really helps settle this too.

My iPhone works perfectly for streaming music via my Kenwood KDC-X592's USB port (I use Pandora mostly, but I'm assuming other apps would work just the same).

When I plug in my iPhone it gives me some crap about "this accessory is not compatible with iPhone," but still charges the phone and sends it into iPod mode. From there if I hit pause on the Kenwood and then the home button on the phone it takes me back to the menu, and from there I can start any app I want and the audio still streams through to the head unit.

Mind you the head unit still is stuck on "pause" for whatever song it started playing, but other than that it's a flawless setup.

Not sure if this works with other head units, but it might be worth a shot. If you can get the iPhone out of iPod mode and into another app it will still send the audio out via the dock connector.
