HAs anyone tried working around the safety feature on dvd players? I've heard some guys using switches to simulate parking brakes. How about a relay? Has anyone tried using them? Thanks

Mine plays while driving. I've had DVD players in 3 of my vehicles and all of mine been wired so it can play while in motion. Sometimes its as easy as grounding out the wire that goes to the e-brake switch.

Yeah,it mostly depends on the brand of the unit, but like you said, most of the time it's as easy as just grounding a single wire, intended for the emergency brake. The unit I currently have is like that, just ground it and you're good to go.

Considering the fact I am a cop, I would hope you are not trying to play the DVD's up front. It is an immediate 3 point ticket in all states :/

If you go to Best Buy or Fry's (nope not affiliated with them either) you would see the DVD players sold state clearly they can not be used while in motion and the legalities are stated in the higher end brands manual.

Take my advice, not worth it

Cop sees the reflection in your glass as you go by, or as he comes up behind in an offside lane, and you can power down all you want - you'll still get the ticket.

I have pretty dark windows so that will be a no go for any cop seeing that.Plus navigation is not illegal and I doubt anyone is going to be able to tell a movie from a navigation screen with dark windows. Thanks for your concern though.Ill keep you guys posted if I ever get caught.Till then Ill be known as the dvd playing BANDIT. mUAHAHA....

Mine is bypassed too, I'd bet 90%+ of them on the road are. The main reason I did mine is to enable the full capabilities of the navigation while on the move. Just as dangerous I know, but my wife is perfectly capable of punching in the destination or using it to search POI's/area's of interest while I drive.

Ok. Mr. Officer. Am I withing the law? DVD player mounted on the headrest looking forward for a child in the rear facing car seat???

I can see it in my rear view. Found it very usefull on a 1200 mile car trip with a 9 month old.

I see DVD players in the front all the time around here.

Speaking of distrations while driving... Nothing is worse that a wife in the passenger seat gasping, giving me and elbow and saying, "Hey Honey would you look at that?!"

Why don't you cops ever give them tickets????!!!!!!!! HUH!!!!;-)

So true,it seems that alot of units lock out some of the Nav. features if it senses that you are moving.I too have my DVD receiver bypassed to allow the option of playing in motion, yet I certainly don't attempt to watch Movies while driving.Although with the unit I have,I can actually turn off my monitor and just listen to the movie if I choose.I'm pretty sure other units may offer this feature too.

Wondering if it was really that dangerous to watch a DVD and drive, I gave it a test today. I only hit two parked cars, 1 pedestrian and family of ducks crossing the street.......I don't see what all the worry is about.

uh, yea, that was a joke

i think its a dumb law, ill bypass the lockout if i ever get the double din alpine ive been looking at. i think that if somebody is dumb enough to watch a movie while driving and is swerving all over the road because of it, the cop should just cite them for reckless driving. no reason a front seat passenger shouldnt be able to watch a movie or mess with the gps.

I got a kenwood system and every thing works while driving I love being able to watch a movie while driving. :) just kidding I think that it is more convenient to bypass it because entering adresses and using the gps on the unit is just so much better not having to wait to stop to enter something. I think the motion feature is for stock units because my moms lexus has the disable function while in motion.

But I still think it is funny when you see the main screen and it still says "some functions are disabled while in motion."

Why aren't stand-alone GPS systems illegal to use while driving?

Show a little consideration for the rest of us who share the road with you and refrain from watching movies while you drive. What's so hard to understand about that?

alot of cars come factory with dvd players these days. Also if having a dvd on is illegal so should gps units. In fact I think gps is even more distracting to watch. I think it should be a choice and the drivers responsibility to drive safely while doing anything distracting like ipods, phones, etc. Either way there is always going to be somethoing distracting and illegal going on inside peoples vehicles and cops can't watch and pull over everybody. Besides all that has anyone tryed the relay mod for watching dvds??

I don't need a DVD or Nav----just drive in circles:lol:

Research shows that the average driver feels they are a better than average driver.

Go figure.

You should get one of these so you can make a nice sandwich while you drive and watch movies.

Problem is hoss its our word against the cop. Judge will believe the cop since
you have no cred. and here in VA they can charge you with Reckless Driving a Class 1 misd.

Well your honor I saw the defendant driving down the rode and saw he was watching a DVD.

Defendant I wasnt watching DVD

Guilty Drivers' license suspended for 6mos and a $750 fine.

And having that misd on your record could result in you not getting a job, losing a job or having any security clearance denied or revoked.

One of the soldiers in my buddies unit was convicted of 22mph over the speed limit ie Reckless Driving. He lost his cushy job in presidential support unit and is now freezing his butt off in Afghanistan.

And please if you see grizzled ole mean looking dude driving an old BMW 2002 stay out of my way if you are watching DVDs since a little tap to your rear quarter panel will send you into the weeds.

OMG. I gotta get one of these. I can make my own popcorn in the front seat now instead of having to stop and buy a bag at the Stop N GO.
have you seen any anything to melt butter?

That looks almost idiot proof. With the sandwich maker you have to take at least one hand off the wheel, probably both.

Is there a 12v soda pop dispenser as well?

It's funny, I was just at a Wendy's eating lunch that happened to be located in one of the larger Pilot truck stop/gas stations....they had all these 12v appliances and then some in stock.

Yeah, a lot of people think that if there is no "proof", my-word-against-the-Cop's, they are home-free. Totally not the case. The Judge will ALWAYS take the Cop's word for it. Have a friend who's shoulder belt was hidden by her long hair. Stopped, and as the cop approached she reached down to the center console to get her purse, for her Driver's license and proof of Insurance. Cop gave her a ticket for not wearing her seatbelt, as he "saw her" put it on as he approached. Teenage son in car supported that she was wearing her seatbelt the whole time to both Officer and Judge. She still got the ticket.
Most places, it's pretty much "if in the Officer's opinion" you were in violation of the law, the courts will always support the Officer over you.
