: Lockable gas cap for Canada
Andy-Montreal 12-04-2003, 10:56 AM Hey guys, what's the deal with not being able to get a lockable gas cap for our E's? The parts guy told me that they will not meet canadian emission standards. How can our standards be more strict than California? He also claims that if we buy one from the states, the service-engine-soon light will come on. Anybody have any experience with this?
Got a Honda Cap from the parts dept of my dealership. No hassle from the staff and no warning lights.
Cheers, eh

Jeff1192 12-04-2003, 02:50 PM Which dealership in Ottawa did you get it from? And if you don't mind me asking...how much did they charge you for it?....right now this issue would be my only real complaint about my E.
Thanks
Andy-Montreal 12-04-2003, 05:02 PM Hey RKL, how is it that your dealership sold you a part that's not listed on the Honda Canada parts listing?
Anyhow, thanks for the info! I'm ordering the cap tommorrow from Handa.
firetruck41 12-04-2003, 05:10 PM Not just a canadian problem, parts departments all over seem to deny that there is a locking gas cap. I speculate that it is because most hondas have locking covers so they assume (you what happens when you do that!) that locking screw on gas caps are not available and don't even look, though they may say they did. :?
Andy-Montreal 12-04-2003, 05:16 PM Good point firetruck!
Sometimes I feel as if I'm asking the parts guy a favor when looking up an accessory for me. When I purchased $1,800 bucks worth of accessories for the E, there were large white stickers on the Honda boxes stating to ask the parts dep't for the installation instructions. Not only did they claim that they didn't have them, they told me that since their techs aren't installing the accessories, they offer no warranty whatsoever on them and I was on my own.
I downloaded the instructions from the Handa website...
Give these guys a call, Peninsula Import - 905-827-9407 ask for Tony or Bill. I just picked up the locking gas cap that was ordered from the US for $45.62 Cdn. The part number is 17680SAAG00. They are located in Oakville, but they ship next day via Purolator.
P.S. the key is HUGE

I have heard you can rekey it to your ignition/door key, might check with a locksmith. Probably only 10 or 15 bucks.
Andy-Montreal 12-05-2003, 02:16 PM Thanks guys! I guess the counter-guy was in fact "anal-retentive"!
lizzurd 12-05-2003, 07:10 PM Hey guys im a honda parts guy myself.the locking cap was made available in canada shorty after the E's release. It wasnt available at the time the accessory books were printed but a bulletin was issued shorty after.I'll post the part number tommorow after i find the box for mine in the garage.

Hey Lizzurd, guess what? I walk into the dealer today to ask once again about the lockable gas cap and they now tell me that they found the part number and yes, it is now available for Canada.
Meanwhile, they want roughly $25 bucks for laser-cutting the key to re-code it with the ignition key. I ordered the cap and agreed to re-code it as the key is huge. Supposedly, the key needs to be laser cut and not everyone has this special machine other than the Honda dealer.
Will the new laser cut key start the car? I thought the original Honda key has a chip in it for the ignition, I guess it's always nice to have a spare door key though.
firetruck41 12-10-2003, 09:05 PM I was under the impression that the cap needs to be recoded to match with the ignition key, not quite sure what they are doing, hopefully not cutting your ignition key to match the gas cap, then it will open the gas cap but not open your doors or start your car, and then you'll need two keys anyway :?: :?

Actually Firetruck.....you're right. It just dawned on me now as you mentioned it. Why do you need a laser to cut a key that's already cut? All the cap really needs is a tumbler re-coding to match the key...right?
boxster 12-10-2003, 11:11 PM You're pretty funny there firetruck... best laugh I had all day... Thanks!
