: Still more on the leaky moonroof
Opus in Ohio 12-08-2003, 04:50 PM This might be the last time I make a post before I wind up in jail, accused of reverse euthenasia. I might go postal and put my dealer out of my misery.
Today my E went in for its THIRD visit to try to cure the leaking sunroof. I got a phone call at midafternoon -- this is after they've had the thing all day to work on it (supposedly) -- and the guy says he's been running a hose on it for half an hour and can't find a leak. Never mind that I told them it didn't leak when it was being driven, and the water flows rapidly over the top. I told them it only leaks when it's been sitting parked in the rain. But how do they test for it? They blast it with a hose.
Now it's 5:45. I'm going to have to call them because they closed at 5:30 with no one ever calling me back. Now I'll have some secretary at the payment window read me what it says on the printout. "Unable to duplicate." Then later, I'll drive it home. We're expecting rain here tonight, so I'm sure when I go out to drive to work in the morning I'll find more water in the rear compartment.
Sigh.
Beam me up, Scotty. There are no intelligent life forms at my dealership. :(
LakesideZ 12-08-2003, 05:04 PM Sorry to hear about your troubles, but in the dealerships defense, we generally dont "blast" the water out the hose, but rather let it pour out and let it sit on the vehicle, which should in theory do the same thing that sitting out in the rain would do.
Im thinking, it's quite possible that it has something to do with the alignment of the sunroof. Since it last leaked for you, did you after that open and close it before taking it to the dealership. Did you open or close it at the dealership? It could be unaligned by being loose, then when it gets to the dealership it's been closed and lined up that time.
Just a thought.
Opus in Ohio 12-08-2003, 05:20 PM I thought about that alignment thing and had asked about it both previous trips to the dealer. Both times they said they were confident it is not the problem. Just to be safe, I consciously did not open the hatch after the last visit, for the very reasons you cited.
I know I shouldn't be mad at the dealer for not being able to fix a problem they can't duplicate. But damn it, just because you couldn't find the problem doesn't mean it doesn't exist, and it really makes me angry when they just shrug it off, like I'm supposed to just keep on bringing it back until they finally get lucky and it happens to leak on the 36th time they run a hose over it.
By the way, "blast" is not my word. It's the word the service guy used. Apparently, their thinking was that if it leaks when a little water runs over it, it should really, REALLY leak when you give it the Niagara Falls treatment.
LakesideZ 12-08-2003, 07:02 PM Okay, heres what I would suggest at this point. Contact AHM customer service and lodge a complaint. The reason I say this is because each dealer is independant, and if they end up replacing say the whole moonroof as being defective and leaking, then the part will get recalled to AHM and they will possibly test the part, and if they can't get it too leak then the dealership will end up being debited the money for the repair, in essence paying for the repair themselves when it should be american honda motors corp that pays for the repair.
By getting the customer relations involved they may even send out a mfg techline tech to take a look at the vehicle and he may advise them to replace the whole assembly or something as simple as a seal.
It doesnt hurt if your frustrated by this to call them and get the mfg involved if you havnt already.
NVRSATISFYD 12-11-2003, 10:04 AM I was wondering if anyone had this moonroof leak problem yet! How often do you remove the sunroof? this doesnt really matter because the opening shouldnt leak regardless but just tryin to get an idea of wear and tear!! :?
Opus in Ohio 12-11-2003, 10:17 AM I've never removed the moonroof, and I've only opened it maybe three times, just to show it off.
Updating this saga -- It's at the dealership again today for the fifth time. They had it yesterday and ran water over it several different ways and couldn't get it to leak. I went out to go to work this morning and there was water in the back again. This time I drove straight to the dealership. That was at 7:30. It's now almost 11:30 and I've heard nothing. Anyone want to be against "we can't find anything" being their answer?
NVRSATISFYD 12-11-2003, 10:37 AM That sucks! Especially because its a new car and things like this shouldnt happen! Nothing more irritating than a brand new moonroof that leaks from the factory! I feel for you! I only hope that mine doesnt leak! Where does the water collect so I know what to look for? where your car is parked , is it flat? or on a severe angle? Has your E seen any snow?? I know that they say in the owners manual not to let a lot of snow build up on the skylight, I guess because of the pressure and the seals! GOOD LUCK! I hope they can fix the problem for you! :(
sevenbob 12-11-2003, 10:42 AM Just a few thoughts.
1. Changes in tempereture may be causing expansion/contraction overnight that causes a gap. This would not be easy for the dealer to replicate.
2. Parking at some angle may be causing a twist in the body structure. This would also be difficult to replicate.
Just thoughts, hope you get it fixed.
lae10851 12-11-2003, 11:28 AM Could water be collecting inside while they are pouring it on and then waiting to drip out overnight? Stealthy thing water can be!
Amy
Opus in Ohio 12-11-2003, 11:37 AM Thanks to all three of you who replied to my last message. Expansion/contraction and parking angle both were considered and didn't pan out (unfortunately). As to where the water collected, if you are looking down at the E from above, with the front at 12:00, the water pools just slightly at the bottom L and R corners of the moonroof. It is/was leaking in at the lower left corner.
Possible good news! The dealership called to say they think they found the problem. They say there was a gap between the glass top and the seal that is part of that unit. They said they actually replaced the glass.
Man, I hope this does it. :D
tamer_hanna 12-11-2003, 12:51 PM I have no sun roof and today I discoved the leakage comming from the harness of the back right seat belt..
I am not sure if it happend just today due to the heavy rain that we are having in montreal?.
onyone with the same problem..?
Opus in Ohio 12-11-2003, 12:56 PM You might have the dealership check the roof drain. I understand some or all of them run through the "pillar" there.
James 04-30-2005, 08:38 PM I have the same problem with the drain holes. Any suggestions how they were repaired-I tried everything.Thank you
James
