The wrench symbol came on. It must be oil change time? So according to the threads I have read it seems that there are two choices.
1) Red Line
2) Mobil 1 Extended
Is this right for our Ontario climate of hot summers cold winter (ideal for Lilac trees) and available?
p.s. at 6,600kms

so, me and my friends were chilling out at the arcade, we call up another friend told him to hurry up. he shows up in a toyota previa and it had an aftermarket exhaust. thing is, it was louder than our other guy's SC400!!
the SC400 sounded like a lambo... man did we love it!! the owner and my friend took it out for a spin. my friend thought the car was traveling about 120-130 down highway 7, but when he looked onto the speedometer, it read 260, almost climbing to 170!! they eventually saw some cops standing by and immediately slowed the car back down to 70.... man was it fun!!! :D:lol:

The wrench symbol came on. It must be oil change time? So according to the threads I have read it seems that there are two choices.
1) Red Line
2) Mobil 1 Extended
Is this right for our Ontario climate of hot summers cold winter (ideal for Lilac trees) and available?
p.s. at 6,600kmsRedline can get a bit pricy depending on where you buy it and you might have to order it ahead of time. Some Canadian Tire stores stock it, but normally they just have the 10W30 and 5W30 on the shelf.

If it was me, I would do two things:

Recommend to the shop they change the filter at EVERY service, not just when the maintenance minder says to (an "A" service according to Honda is simply the oil changed without the filter, but be sure to specifically request a new filter be installed)
Buy Mobil 1 5W20 synthetic in the 4.4L or 5L bulk jug from Wal-Mart or any other store that carries it and use that. It's cheaper than buying the individual 1L bottles and it will be fine so long as you follow your maintenance when it is required.

I honestly don't care much for the maintenance minder system because I like having control over my maintenance and when I see cars coming into the shop with 10-12,000kms on them and it says to just rotate the tires and change only the oil and NOT the filter, I have issues. I'm a die-hard "service by kilometers" fan as well as an old fashioned "oil & filter" guy. I mean who honestly changes the oil and not the filter? Sorry Honda but I need to see some good hard evidence behind that "A" service.

Call me old fashioned, but I check my tire pressures once a week. I change my oil and filter every 5000kms, using an S2000 filter and normal Mobil 1 5W20 synthetic. Every 10,000kms I rotate my tires. Every 20,000kms I change the transmission fluid. For everything else, I follow the Honda maintenance schedule for things like brake services, spark plugs, brake fluid and coolant replacement because the Honda stuff is pretty durable in that regard. Mind you, I work at a dealership so I do the work on my lunch hour but anyone can follow a more frequent and even method if they want. I like it because all my maintenance happens in certain intervals. I don't need a sticker to remind me when to change the oil because I know if it's a multiple of 5000 then it's time. If it's a multiple of 10,000 I know the tires need rotating. If it's a multiple of 20,000 I know to change the ATF. Nice and simple.

Am I a bit anal with my vehicle's maintenance? Yes. Does it hurt the Element? No. Does it cost more? Most definitely. Do I sleep better knowing that I'm keeping the worst necessary investment I will ever make in my life in peak condition? You bet your ass I do.

It had a regular oil scent to it whereas the Mobil 1 5W20 I bought had almost a sweet smell to it.

Maybe I'm just puffing smoke out my ass here but I ran the Honda 5W20 for about a week and that whole scent thing drove me nuts. I ended up dumping it all and put Mobil 1 back in. I run Redline in the Civic because I like to drive it hard. But for the Element it will be Mobil 1 exclusively from now on. The only place I found it in the bulk jug in town here was at Wal-Mart. Was something like $41.99 for a 5L jug if I recall correctly.

Not saying the Honda synthetic 5W20 is bad because I'm sure it does what it is supposed to do, but I don't think it's as pure a synthetic as Mobil 1 is.

P.S. Honda Ontario oil is just rebadged Petro-Canada oil, both the regular and the synthetic.

It is for 2002-2005 SiR. I would hate to see someone cut up a $900 cat back just to fit the E.One of the reasons why I want to swap a B-series into my Civic. People keep telling me to get a K20A2 RSX-S motor but I have an ESPELIR JGT500 cat-back on my hatch (it cost me $900 and that was my COST back when I bought it from KHF) and there is no way I'm cutting into that gem so I can fit a converter in to have a legit K-swap.

All signs are pointing towards the economical but respectable OBD-2 B18B engine for the hatchie so the ESPELIR stays intact :D

i used the mobil 1 1000 5w20 oil

performs nice and don't have much smell to it either
i'm pretty anal when i go over the oil change intervals and everytime i change my oil, i like to have my filter replaced with it too. who knows what junk and stuff are building up in there :D

for us, the A service will mean:

5w20-5w30 oil
drain plug washer
15400-PLM-A02 filter

since the price of the filters are so cheap nowadays, why not replace the filter every oil change intervals?

it only cost $9.18 + tax (retail price) and you get the filter and crush washer

pay a bit more, and it'll pay itself down the road :)

I'm not saying the Honda 5W20 synthetic ISN'T synthetic because I have looked it up online and it is, I just found that it smelled different compared to the Mobil 1.

Also, there is debate clearly available for reading online as to what a company can technically call a "synthetic", which Petro-Canada was involved in along with Castrol and other companies.

I'm sure so long as you follow your maintenance schedule, ANY oil will be okay. But me, I'm too freakin anal and I tend to stick with what I think works best, even if it is no better than anything else out there.

No, the Honda synthetic 5W20 is a full synthetic, but where it all comes into question is what a company is allowed to consider and label a "synthetic". It has to to with polyalphaolephins (PAOs) and very high viscosity index (VHVI) basestocks.

I found this article interesting. I know it is on the AMSOIL website but the one thing that remains true throughout the entire article is that Mobil 1 still remains true to using PAOs for their full synthetic oils.

Here is the article: http://www.1st-in-synthetics.com/is_your_synthetic_motor_oil_really_synthetic.htm

alright none those jokes now....oh wellz i will suck it up and use the honda synthetic this time.... switch to mobil next tim.....BTW lizzurd...do u carry mobil? if so let me know, i wanna swap or xchange.Ya I just changed out the Honda stuff because I work there so I did it on my own time after hours. It was only a week old along with the filter so I just dumped the oil and took the filter off to drain everything out, then put the filter back on and poured in the Mobil 1.

You'll be fine with the Honda stuff. Sorry if I spooked ya or anything. I know the Honda synthetic is good stuff and for all intents and purposes, it probably doesn't make much difference what synthetic you use so long as you change it regularly.

Like I said, I change my oil every 5000kms and use the S2000 filter (Honda P/N 15400-PCX-004) so at that rate, there is probably no real difference between the Honda stuff and Mobil 1. I just feel better using Mobil 1 that's all.

LOL take what I say with a grain of salt and skepticism because I can be a bit OCD sometimes

the PCX filters fit the E?They most all Honda engines that take the regular filter, so long as the engine block doesn't wrap around the filter or the engine doesn't have that protective guard around the filter.

I use the S2K filter on my '95 Civic.

If that's true you're a lot more responsible than I am with your "necessary investments" :DLOL thanks for the compliment PVR.

I've always been super particular about my vehicles. LOL even my old '88 Civic LX sedan winter beater received synthetic oil, Sunocco gas and an interior detailing regularly :)

first pple say Honda oil is PetroCdn oil....now someone is telling me Amsoil is PetrolCdn oil too?! :?:

so lost....i'm juz using Amsoil this time...Honda oil on the shelves right now at Ontario dealerships is Petro-Canada. Next time you're in a dealership, look at a bottle of 5W20 regular or 5W20 synthetic, then look at the bottles at a Petro-Canada station. The bottles are the exact same shape and design. They even have those raised angles lines near the top and bottom around the label.

Not sure what, if anything, is going to change now that Petro-Can and Suncor merged. I'm still sticking with Mobil 1 5W20 full synth for the Element and Redline 5W30 for the Civic.

oh do you eh? i love how he made that italian hand signal and he said "f#$k you!" and the indian guy comes out and asks "do you want to eat? and no swearing!!" LOLLLL :lol:All of his skits from the one show with the Chinese guy that says BE A MAN are badass.

There is one (can't think of what show it is from) where he imitates an East Indian guy and a Chinese guy talking about the designer Lois Vutton bag. Now THAT one is funny to listen to because he has the Chinese accent on point in that one too

well lizzurd was kind enough to replace my Honda stuff with Amsoil.....

I do practice questions at work on my lunch break and skim my notes at home here on the areas I'm still a bit fuzzy. I don't think I'll do too bad and I'm pretty confident I'll nail it first time. I've been getting good marks on the practice exams at work that I've been doing on E-Learning so hopefully it's a sign of good things to come.

Getting your license is pretty much the pinnacle moment when you're an apprentice. Once I have that paper on the wall next to my Honda diploma, I can finally breathe a sigh of relief

techwrench

its a torque/angle wrench where you set everything electronicallyI see you have you fallen prey to the Snap-On propaganda machine too Kit  .

Too much money for me. Snap-On has their place and they do make a quality products, but for the most part they have ridiculous prices on a lot of the general tools like wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, etc that techs buy from them. Paying $300-400 for a ratcheting wrench set is stupid when Sears sells the Gear Wrench line for around $79.99 and if you catch a sale, you can get it for HALF PRICE. And Gear Wrench makes them for Sears as well as Mastercraft, HUSKY, MATCO and probably Snap-On as well. For most guys starting out in the trade or who work at dealerships which see similar cars all day it is just plain dumb to spend a good house down payment on tools.

My teachers at school bought from the tool truck for specialty or precision tools, but everything else was Sears or Mastercraft.

I use Craftsman sockets and wrenches at work and have had awesome luck with them. And if something breaks, you simply go to your local Sears and get a new one no questions asked. No haggling with a tool truck guy and waiting a week or two for him to come by.

For specialty tools that I need at work, I deal with our local MATCO tool truck, or I check with the Carquest store next door to my work. Everything else is Craftsman for me. Every now and thenMastercraft Maximum if Sears doesn't have/stock it.

don't know if it is allowed , but

Unabashed plug for Orangeville Honda , http://www.orangevillehonda.com/en/index.spy

I approached the dealer with my DRLs need after importing a US model and he informed me that they could do the work , but an independent electronics shop in town could do it easier and quicker , an Honest Dealer.... so I ordered my mats front and rear , and thanked the service manager ... My wife has been a steady customer for her civic since 2001 , it pays to have a good relationship with the dealer ... ;-) he stated the DRL kits are tough to install on the newer units

yeah the newer model Es run on a negative trigger (whatever that means) where most vehicles operate under positive trigger. having said that it would mean DRL units wont work on your headlights....instead it will require some relay this and that.... the workaround it is to route the DRL to fog lights...which was what i did.

If you get the chance, ask if Stephen Corriveau can work on your vehicle if possible, and tell him Steve from Honda House said hello :D. He's a friend of mine who used to live in Chatham here and seeing as how picky I am about my vehicles, he's one of the very few guys in this world I'd trust to work on mine for me.

So long as the light is bright and visible during the daytime and comes on whenever the vehicle is running, you can hook it to either the headlights, signal lights or fog lights and still be legal.

Yup that is what CMVSS requires...... still a pain to wire....and those Canadian Tire people arnt that smart to do DRL wiring.... anyways made a mess on 2 DRL units.

One wanted to rear end me when waiting for the bus several cars in front to pick-up/drop off passengers and another idiot tried to overtake some bicycles on a country road curvature with limited sight distance / shoulder space and almost hit me head on.I felt the same way when I was living in Scarlem. Seemed like everyone was out for blood and it was like a death race on the 401 and most of the major urban arteries than run parallel or intersect each other (Markham, Lawrence, Eglington, Warden, etc.). Downtown I found it more congested but not quite as bad because in many places it's hard for people to get up to higher speeds due to the lights, traffic, street placements, etc.

I didn't drive in the GTA until my last two months of the AHAP program that was long enough. What surprised me the most was no matter how ****ty a driver, most always seemed to respect pedestrians even if they weren't crossing at a designated crossing area, which struck me as odd for a city like Toronto.

I don't know what is worse....admitting to doing something stupid....or bragging about on an online forum.

Street racing as it is called under the new law is stupid and very dangerous. My first instict was to delete this post. My friends and family travel on the same roads that you claim to be speeding on. I honestly hope that the next time you decide to take a nice little 180kph cruise that someone calls the OPP on your ass.Think about how good your E will be able to make an emergency lane change if someone was to pull out in front of you at those speeds.

so last night with my friends, while traveling from our photoshoot in downtown, we decided to travel back home (we live around the markham area), we were met with a lexus is300 traveling real fast........... my friend tried to box him in but he got away once the 2 lane split merged with the 4.................

around the 404 and finch area, he flew past me

i said !@#$ it, and went to go chase that guy....

so from that point on......... my car topped off at 180......... i could feel the engine stutter, but he was wayyy behind me.............

from the off ramp onto highway 7, he came real fast, but that didn't stop me... hit the turn at 140, pull it back in 2nd low gear (mine is an at) drops the speed till 60, then brake. came to a stop at the intersection, for him, he was turning westbound onto highway 7, while we headed east to carry on with our shoots :)great night last night was....I'm sorry Kit but after this post and others I have read, I politely decline the Blue Mtn offer to ride up. Hate to sound harsh here and I'm sorry if I do my friend but I am enjoying my nice clean driving record right now and it seems to me that you make too many poor decisions while driving for me to feel comfortable around. I'll be happy to let you know in advance when I will be on the mountain via email or text and I'll be happy to meet you at the lift or somewhere in The Village, but driving up with you is not something I really feel safe doing after reading this.

Yes I have done some stupid things with my Civic in the past and I am not saying I've been perfect all my life. I have the past driving record to prove I liked speed myself. I also know the feeling when someone flies past you and for some reason there's this instinct to follow suit, as if they have telepathically called you on by flying past. Again, I'm not saying I'm perfect but NEVER have I deliberately tried to "box someone in" traveling at a high rate of speed on the highway. I have however watched someone in the past almost put his car under the back wheels of a transport trailer trying to outrun me and it is probably one of the scariest feelings I have felt in my life for something that wasn't even happening to me.

Tough love here...if he's travelling fast, get the **** out of the way. Period. Let him follow through and don't get involved, let alone intentionally try to pinch him with your vehicles.

I don't know what is worse....admitting to doing something stupid....or bragging about on an online forum.

Jogger killed in West Lincoln collision (http://www.niagarafallsreview.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1751188)

Driver was a 66-yr old woman, charged with criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, and breach of undertaking and driving with a suspended license.

I wonder if her having a suspended license had anything to do with the seniors driving regulations and the mandatory testing?

Is there manditory testing? My father drove until just after he truned 72 last year....I don't recall him having to take a retest.

I know there's something where after people reach a certain age they have to be tested every year but 66 does strike me as a bit young. My Opa had to re-test every year at a certain point because eventually he kept failing and couldn't drive anymore. I'd have to ask my mom for sure as to the details because he passed away over 6 yrs ago but I know he had to do a written and road test and there came a point in time where he could no longer drive. It was not long after that he became ill and was unable to drive anyways.

I think there might just be more to the suspended license part of the equation.

Commercial (AZ) drivers are required to take annual tests over age 65, the following applies to everyone else:

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/senior/index.shtml

What is the Senior Driver Renewal Program?

The Senior Driver Renewal Program requires that senior drivers, aged 80 years and over, pay the applicable licensing fee, complete a vision test and a knowledge test and take part in a group education session every two years. A small number of drivers may also be asked to take a road test to have their in-car skills assessed.
Why are seniors required to attend a Group Education Session?

This renewal process will help keep seniors mobile and independent longer, while ensuring that unsafe drivers are identified and appropriate actions taken.
While it is true that senior drivers are involved in fewer collisions compared to younger drivers, it is also true that they are involved in a larger number of collisions compared to the number of kilometres they drive. Some senior drivers have said that an annual road test was very stressful for them. Research and a pilot study conducted in Ontario have shown that a well-developed education session may improve senior drivers' awareness of potential traffic hazards and help them drive more defensively.
How does the program support road safety?

With the Senior Driver Renewal Program, older drivers may be required to complete four components: the knowledge and vision tests, the group education session, and a road test if required.
The Group Education Session will:

give drivers information on driving
give them the tools to assess how well they are driving
outline changes which drivers can make to continue to drive safely

Senior drivers will be able to improve their driving performance. As well, the program will be able to more quickly identify drivers who are at greater risk of being in a collision. Most senior drivers will not be required to take a road test.
Who is required to take a road test?

All drivers are assessed by a trained counsellor. Drivers who have indications that they may pose a road safety risk will be required to take a road test. The counsellor at your Group Education Session will discuss this with you.

Reading back thru the previous posts, it reminded me that we had a similar incident this past summer while driving through Utah...

It was the middle of the day, and Elaine and I were traveling with her parents on our way to Salt Lake City. I was driving, and the roads were fairly busy.

I was driving along on cruise control, and would drive in the right lane, and pull into the left lane to pass slower vehicles, then go back into the right lane. I didn't think anything about it, as this is how I usually drive on the highway. Anyway, we were passed by a bunch of 'kids' in a BMW, who pulled in front of me, then slowed down. I didn't see anyone coming up behind me, so I signaled, and pulled out to pass (while still having the cruise control on).

Well, I guess they got a bit pissed at a bunch of 'old' people passing them in a mini van, because as I was almost past them, they sped up. There was another vehicle in the lane ahead of me (like most States I've been in, there are a large percentage of drivers who stay in the left lane, so you have to wait for a gap, and pass them on the right...) and I was running out of space. So these morons slow down as I do, staying a bit ahead of me, and not allowing me to change lanes.

I guess their buddies in the Lexus SUV had caught up to us by then, because I now have another vehicle right on my backside, REALLY close, and I'm boxed in. I have no idea who these guys are, and it's obvious that I have an out of State plate, but I don't know if it's a bunch of kids playing around, or what...

Tapping on the brakes doesn't get the guy behind me to back off, and the guy in front of me seems oblivious, so I lean on the horn, and flash the lights. He looks in the mirror and hits his brakes. There was enough room, and I was watching, so that I kind of expected it, but the BMW beside me didn't, so he goes ahead enough that I can now change back to the right lane, but now I have one in front, and one beside me. We are all thinking what the hell is going on here???

So I got on the phone and called 911. I guess they saw me, and all took off ahead of us I got enough of their plates and vehicle descriptions, and gave the police all my info, so I didn't think about it again...

About an hour up the road, 3 cruisers had them pulled over in a rest area.

We kept on driving...I figured I gave them enough info to get hold of me if they needed to...

You have much to learn grasshopper....

'if' I had done this anywhere, I would be charged with dangerous driving! My word against their's and their 'witnesses' are in the vehicle beside me, helping to 'box' me in. Hitting the brakes for no reason is a very dumb thing to do, and is considered an aggressive act under the Highway Traffic Act.

Have you every tried to control a vehicle slamming on the brakes at 70 mph??
I have, and I train others how to do it. IF a tire doesn't blow, and IF the brakes grab equally (they rarely do with that type of braking), then I can be pretty sure of only taking out the vehicle behind me - and I mean taking him out, becasue he will either hit me doing 70 mph, or drive under me as I brake - I'm pretty sure at least 2 or 3 of the vehicles behind him will also not have enough time to stop...

So I would be looking at causing a multi vehicle accident many miles from home....
hmmm. Lose my license, my insurance, and everything I own, cause guaranteed I'd be sued, and they can take future earnings too...IF I and my family survive the accident.

i was car #3 approaching a 4-way stop sign for a left turn and car #4 (to my left and going straight) came after me..... cars #1, 2 made their moves so it was my turn... guess what.... car #4 honked and accelerated straight into my path inside the intersection thinking he has the full right of way.....

1. #3 was before #4
2. his right side is me.....rule of thumb for simultaneous approach (yield right of way)

do people even know the rules of the road these days? sad part...it almost happens once or twice a month!

The car vs bike argument is a no win for anyone involved. For every asshat in a car there is one more on a bike. .

News flash time:

Red Lights and Stop Signs Apply to Cyclists Too.

I can't tell you how many times i have stopped at a red and when i was ready to make a legal right hand turn some ass hat on a bike shoots out of no where, ignores the light and hangs a left in front of me to cross the road just as i am starting to turn.....And if i had hit him/her.....Who would have been at fault?

I agree with you Adrian. I know unless the road is empty, I'm one of the cyclists being made fun of for pressing the cross button at intersections.

In defense of cyclists, motorists seem to be VERY impatient when it comes to us. One day I was out biking with Adia in the Chariot (for those who don't know what a Chariot is, this is mine: http://www.chariotcarriers.com/english/html/cabriolet.php). It was broad daylight and the Chariot has 3M reflective striping, reflectors and bright orange high-visibility flag up whenever Adia is in it. I was crossing an intersection with a green light, no advance green and the WALK symbol (again, I'm the geek who actually presses the button every time when I have Adia in the Chariot) and started out into the intersection.

At the moment my bike crossed the halfway point, putting Adia about 1/3 of the way into the intersection, an oncoming Pontiac Grand Prix came up to the intersection to turn left (cross our path) and when the car oncoming to him passed through he went to turn left and basically stopped right to the left of me. If I put my foot out I could have touched his front bumper. He kept inching forward as I kept moving and waved his hands up in the air as if to say HOLY BUDDY LET'S GO!!!!! I looked at him, shot him the finger and and pointed up at the light. As soon as the Chariot was clear of the front of him he went through quick but slowed down as if he was going to come back around to me.

When I reached the sidewalk on the other side I turned around to face him and he sped off.

It's guys like that who ruin it for other motorists.

For two years prior to purchasing the Element, my Specialized Crossroads and Chariot was Adia and I's "car".

I have the Honda hitch and a Swagman dual-bike hitch rack for the Element now so I can go to London more often to ride the trails. I just go to Fanshawe Conservation Area which has picnic area and playgrounds as well as 22kms of trails around Fanshawe Lake.

Are the trails paved or dirt? Maybe when I'm up in the area this summer I'll bring my GIANT and check them out.

With the exception of a few components that are different on mine and the fact that I have V-brakes, Below is basically my bike, a 2002 GIANT NRS AIR

I previously had a GIANT ATX 970 and when I puked the frame on it dirt jumping, I was able to get a discounted new '02 NRS AIR frame. I ended up customizing it with my own choice of parts: MAVIC CrossRide wheels for trails, MAVIC CrossRoc wheels for city, MANITOU forks, TRUVATIV crankset, Ritchey Comp Mtn (same as Shimano SPD-959) pedals, Race Face bar and stem, Shimano XTR brakes and derailleurs and Specialized Carbon/Ti seat.

It's a small frame (16.5) and I find I need one with a bit more spread to the ****pit. Seeing as how used bikes depreciate exponentially worse than cars do (my bike cost me around $4500 to build and I'd be lucky to get $1000 for it now) instead of buying a new medium frame GIANT I'm going to just replace the stem with a longer one, go from a flat to a riser bar and install on off-set seatpost.

GIANT's new Contact lineup of components is around $120 for all three items and will give me more flexibility to change my positioning on the bike.

one of my operations supervisors call them scarb-kamakazies.... well if it hapened it would be the blueE...... sounds a lil cursed eh folks?...I lived in the bumhole of Toronto for eight months and two of those months I was driving there. Worst two months ever. The other six I took the TTC and aside from the bit of planning that went into getting places (I basically had to learn the ins and outs of the TTC in the first week or so I was there) once you had everything down and provided all you needed to bring with you was yourself and carry-on items, it was a breeze getting places and FAR less stressful that driving.

Only positive point I can say to driving in Toronto is outside of the congested downtown and other downtown-esque areas, you can get places fairly quick during the non-busy times with a vehicle compared to the bus. However, downtown travelling is worth either the $2.75 per trip, $35/wk or $110/mo cost to leave all the bullpoop in the hands of a TTC operator :-D.

You guys work out the date you'd like to meet up and I'll see if I can choreograph it for a weekend I go up to see my gf (she lives in Brantford for work). Cycling isn't mandatory for me and I'm just as comfortable just coming to hang out in the Element as I am putting the Swagman on the back with the Giant and strapping on my clipless shoes.

I'll probably bring my bike up anyways just in case, but I'm not hellbent on riding it if it's out of the way for people to join me.

I'm flexible, just let me know and I'll work around your guys' schedules and dates.

There is a big difference between what we are used to paying for any service, and what you guys are used to paying down there. It really is a societal difference (we travel in the US frequently enough that we've come to recognize this).

First off, you need to realize that we have a higher minimum wage than you do, including waiters and waitress'. We've found that there is a marked difference in the attitude of someone who makes most of their wages in tips, and someone who is subsidizing their wages with tips.

But to answer your question, we don't usually tip for contracted services....
In your case, it depends on what the contract is for....if the DJ sets up and plays for the entire reception, including dinner etc, then the DJ is given a free meal (when the venue is charging $50 to $75 a plate, that's a hefty tip right there). I've also seen where the dinner is MC'd by a family member, and the DJ sets up for the the dancing after dinner only, so it's only a few hours, and again, it's a contracted service.
I have seen where the DJ will put out a tip jar, or charges extra for requests...it depends on what has been arranged.
But as to tipping a DJ...not really....have you thought about checking out what a DJ charges up here, compared to down there? It's possible that your rates are higher than we would normally expect to pay, so we would assume that the tip is included...

lizzurd
05-23-2010, 08:50 PM
I am in agreement with Time here. For what DJ's charge up here tipping is not expected.

At my wedding the DJ was given a list of music he was specifically told not to play. Two thirds of the way thru the night he chose to ignore my wishes. If his services had not been included with the boat we rented for the night he would not have been paid at all.

LOL
you might, but the service has to be pretty darn good to get one from us....far too many of them are happy with their $8.50/hr (server min wage) that they just don't care about going the extra mile to even be courteous...

which reminds me...what is with the kids now...when did 'no problem' become the response to 'thank you'. I'm sorry if doing your job is an inconvenience!

(unless we're in the US...then we tip. And I've found that the quality of service goes up exponentially with how low the minimum wage is)

in agreement with everyone else here....

1. difference in culutre..... minimum wage in Ontario right now is almost $10

2. tip is not a right.... but a graditude.... do a bad job - dont demand it.... do a darn good job...expect up to 20%

3. also many of the immigrants to canada come from cultures that dont even tip at all.

whats sad from OP's experience is the fact they never provided any meals to OP. In light of that i would tip.

as for tipping the s******* person.... my wife does a darn good job and managed to carve out 50% of my earnings..... :-D

Actually...general minimum wage is $10.25 (and it just went up in March)
Servers get less, as do home care workers, loggers and fishermen.
Industries who's workers receive room and board or tips have a lower base minimum wage.
But I can tell you that $8.25 is almost twice that most servers in the US receive.

What's discouraging is minimum wage is all that they would pay my friend at my work when they hired him as the detailer/shuttle driver .

Truth be told, he was probably one of THE best detailers I've ever seen. When he had a job offer at VW/Audi for a few dollars more an hour to start, apparently him being able to wet sand, buff and detail used cars to showroom condition just wasn't worth matching the couple extra dollars an hour to keep him :?.

I'm here :-). Staying at the Comfort Inn @ 8330 Woodbine Ave.

I will be at the training facility Mon-Thurs this week from around 7:30am until 5pm (or shortly after if I have a module in the shop that I'm close to finishing) but I'm free after that. I have a service loaner (new 2010 Insight whoo hoo!!!!!) so I while it's probably best to not drive around Toronto with the company car on company ducats too much, I don't see coming out to meet you guys being a problem since Bernie said he's not too far from here.

Just text me tomorrow Bernie and we'll set something up.

Well I'm off to bed gentlemen. Gotta get up early for the free breakfast and to find the new Honda facility near here so I can get started early as possible. Hoping to complete all of my Platinum Level modules over the next four days :-).
