A question some of us may have been asking. What kind of car did your Element replace? Mine will be replacing a van I use for camping and hauling outdoor gear, like my bicycles and kayaks, and home and garden supplies.

Well, I put an SUV. But in reality it will be replacing both and SUV and a pickup truck. My wife no longer works, so we have to cut back to one vehicle. Both of the trucks we have need some TLC, so I'm selling both for something new and hopefully more reliable. At the least I'll be protected by a warranty for the first 3 years - right now it's all coming out of my pocket!

My S.O.P.E will be replacing it's just as unique ( read gawky  ) but somewhat less dog friendly 2001 Pontiac Aztek (maple red metallic). I'm a sucker for plastic cladding and a tent attachment. I wish I could keep them both... ::sigh::

My SOP EX 5SPD 2WD replaced the biggest headache I have ever owned. For 4 years I drove a 1999 VW New Beetle, and for years was loyal to VW. No more!!! I actually went to the Honda dealer to purchase an Accord, I did'nt even know what an Element was... and there it sat! In between a black and blue Element was my SOP... I did'nt even drive it, I looked it over for 15 minutes and brought it home! As long as it said "HONDA" on it I knew it was better than a VW.

I had a Toyota 4-Runner for 8 years. Fantastic Suv, the most reliable car I have ever had, no problems what so ever. I planned to have this car for many more years. However on occasion I'd check out a couple of the new sporty vehicles out there like the VW Bug, PT Cruiser, and the Toyota Matrix. All nice cars but I wouldn't trade it for my 4-Runner. Then of course I saw my first Element. I went to the local Honda dealership, checked it out, test drove it . . . . .and bingo!!! I traded my reliable 4-Runner for the new "E". I couldn't believe it. I never thought I would part w/ my car. I'll miss my old car. But overall I'am ecstatic w/ my new Satin Silver DX Element. :D

Mine will replace my 94 Sentra. I LOVE this car; it's been totally reliable and I've been all over this country with it, but it's got 200,000 miles on it and serious water leakage in the trunk and around the doors, so I have mildew. (It's not so bad in the winter when it's frozen, but when it gets warmer, it is like a health hazard.) Also, I need something bigger with more room for the dog and my stuff.

My E will replace my first car, a 1993 Chevy Cavalier...I figured it was about time to replace my relic of an automobile.

I knew I wanted a Honda....and my husband and I went to the dealership with all thoughts geared to buying a new Honda Civic (we have a 1990 Civic with 150000+ miles and it still runs like a dream)....when we got to the dealership I said "Look Honey...it's the Element"

We had seen TV ads last December, but buying a new car in Decemmber was out of the question (we were getting married on the 14th and paying for the whole wedding ourselves) So, I had really liked what I saw on TV, but it didn't prepare me for when I saw it in person.

I forced my husband to take a test drive and that was it....I have to have it....so I can hardly wait to trade in my 1993 Chevy Caviler and drive off the lot in my 2003 Element.....ten years is a long time to drive a car.....but I can't wait until my E is ten years old!!!!!

Diane

PS I have yet to see an Element on the road here in St. Louis....maybe I will be the first!!! :o)

It was a 2000 Toyota PreRunner Ltd. Great truck, never had a problem with it, just like the other Toyotas we've had. No trouble, that is, until I had to swerve to miss a jerk that took his half out of the middle of the road across the bridge...

Just added the E to the family. I'm still going to keep my '87 Accord with 212,000 miles on it. It's still going strong... too strong! It almost made it hard to justify the new E.

that bites....

I've had two accidents similar to yours, too, besides this one that just happened...

If it weren't for the terrible gas mileage, exorbitant price tag, and what I'd guess would be insanely high insurance and road tax costs, I'd get an original Humvee.... The "can't kill it, even with an RPG" Army version, and drive that around.... Then the only thing that could get to me would be a loaded 18 wheeler.....

On September 10, 2001 I bought my first car a 2002 automatic TDI diesel Beetle, Marlin Blue Pearl. I hadn’t had my license yet and was 18 to turn 19 in November. From first site I loved the Beetle old and new, and had always wanted one. I paid $23,000 for the top of the line beetle at the time. It had everything imaginable accept a CD Changer but was wired for one.
I figured with a new car it would have a few problems but not near as many as I had with my “dream car”.
9/21/01 - Passenger window not closing right.
10/18/01 – sunroof not opening or closing. Wrong license plate bracket
Some time in November, I took my car in for its first oil change because I noticed a small leak. Turns out it had been leaking since I bought it. I had to fork over $250 for a new oil pan because the dealer said he could not prove when or what happened but I was told the screw to drain the oil was tightened down too far at the factory, that’s why it was leaking before my first change.
4/29/02 – A new gearshift was put in I could not take the key out of the ignition.
6/4/02 – A new ABS System and fog light and upper dash trim panel ‘melted in the sun’ back ordered and the parking brake
6/18/02 – Another new parking brake and the ordered upper dash trim panel and seal around the drivers door, leaking back ordered
7/10/02 – door seal done, all three windows not opening right ‘drivers, passengers and sunroof’, trunk light flickering “mercury switch bad”, trunk not closing right.
9/5/02 – Another new gearshift could not get into gear ‘drive etc.’ Trunk light also not fixed the first time.
9/10/02 – Car would not start new starter put in. Heated seat switch not heating ordered.
10/16/02 – Car would not start another new starter put in. Seat switch changed.
10/25/02 – Seat switch changed again ‘internal short in the resistor’
11/12/02 – Grinding from starter bad starter, yet another new starter ordered.
11/15/02 – Starter put in this day.
2/7/03 – New head light short in lamp. Car starts and stalls immediately one last new starter put in.
After all that, I decided to bring it to the service manager for the VW Company. He tells me if I am going to file for lemon law all I would be “given” was an extended warranty and I had not give the dealership enough time to find the problem. But wait I had to leave my car at the dealers for a week to let them find why it was not starting right. In the meantime I was given a $40,000 Demo car, my salesman’s, to drive and when I went to pick up my car I had been yelled at about taking the demo car not my salesman but me. I was not happy with that at all. I filed as far as I could and I got nothing I did not have to money to take them to court so I sold my beetle to another dealer for payoff with them knowing fully what had been done to the car. I was told they were still fighting with the company over the car and it is still having problems but I do not have to worry about it anymore I have my new Element, problem free, knock on wood. It replaced a '66 Comet, my first car; a 289 v8 w/ auto that I bought two years used, and put Mag wheels on.
It replaced my next car, a new 1971 Dodge Dart that I kept for 11 years.
It replaced a two year old used former Sheriff's Patrol car, a '80 Dodge Aspin, a gas hog if there ever was one!!!
It replaced my switch to smaller cars; a 2 year old '84 Chevette, a 2 year old '88 Dodge Colt with fantastic gas mileage (40+ anywhere I drove), A 91 Plymouth Sundance, on it's second engine after only 97,000 miles, and driven 30,000 miles farther.
It replaced my switch to Honda when I changed my alliegence from Mopar products to a CR-V. I saw the light!
Finally, my CR-V was replaced with the E, with only less than 30,000 miles on it. WHY? Well, I was impressed with it, and I got $15,000 from selling an inheritated 1939 Martin guitar worth much more, but because of the odd pickguard and refinished body, I only got that much. It was enough to use as a parameter and my CR-V as trade in to buy. If they wanted more than that parameter then screw 'em!! I got more for the trade in than I thought I would and it came to well within the parameter.

This is only the second car I have bought that I put new wheels and tires on it to make it look "kewl"!

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Has anyone replaced a 4Runner with an E. I have ordered EX 4WD 5spd
SOP, hope I won't miss the ruggedness of the 4Runner. Anyone done that yet? I have about 6-8 weeks to make final decision, am excited about possiblities with the E. I am an avid cyclist and want to be able to easily carry my bike in a car. 4Runner requires me to lay bike down and have to take both wheels off my tandem bikes. Can even get the tandem in the E standing up, if I remove the front wheel.

[quote:6956be4e12="Nate"]Replaced a VW Golf GTi. What a difference. :D

Nate[/quote:6956be4e12]

Same...02 VW GTi 1.8T...but it was a lemon, so I got this in its place! O how happy I am...

My 02 GTI was in the shop under warranty services 16 times in 9 months. From clicking 1st gear, to window falling into door 3 times, to bushings coming loose, to faulty bettery terminal causing my headlamps to stop working causing a ticket for driving home the night they went out with no headlights (cop wouldnt' understand, he was a pretty mean cop), and on to the check engine light 5 times in 2 months, o and the 2nd gear synchro getting dislodged 3/4 of an inch and me having to literally shove past the grinding into 2nd just to be able to drive it to the dealer (towing was closed on independence day, dealer open till 3 or so). That is most of the major things, minor things being hatch hydrolic falling off, hatch lock coming loose, hood release stuck, air conditioning not going off, parking brake lifting past the button, and wipers and spray on for 2 days whenever the car was on (i was so happy when the spray water ran out! :P) so that is my VW story. Man, I am so glad that car is gone, and I am sorry that you're new beetle didn't work out so well. But I did'nt have to pay for the attorney. I went to the Law Offices of William R. McGee and they handle everything without me ever seeing a court room AND they make VW pay for their services plus pay off my loan plus give me a check for everythign I had paid so far. It was absolutely free for me. Just fyi for all of you...www.californialemonlawattorneys.com and if you dont live in california they have links to other offices that work the same way. Ahhh didn't realize how long my post was...sorry sorry sorry

A Saturn SL 4-door with 88hp. It's been a good little car, no problems, but just basic transportation (and no buttons--I want buttons). I've liked the PT Cruiser since it came out, but when the Element came out I was glad I'd waited. Still have a while to wait until it gets here. My first car was a used 1980 Accord--that was a great car, so I'm glad to be back with Honda.

I have a '96 Yukon SLT that I bought new to enable me to go semi off road. It has a heavy duty towing package. The purpose of this gas guzzler was to fetch my fish from out of the wilderness back into civilization, and perhaps drop a boat into Lake Ontario on occasion. I also do extensive travel, basically on the eastern third of the US. For the rare instances that I want to get cute, I use my '88 Benz 300E. I picked up my GG Element 4wd last Thursday, put 1740 miles on it and decided that the other stuff gotta go.

Mine will replace a 2000 Isuzu Trooper 2WD LS with about 33k mi on it.

I bought this Trooper after I wrecked my Trooper Limited on ice. I was hurting, I was at a terrible place in my life, I was on a time schedule of needing a car SOONER rather than later, as in NOW, and I had the world's sleaziest salesman taking advantage of all of this.

I wanted a 4WD and none could be found. So I got this. It has been a perfectly fine vehicle but the sales experience I had, plus the fact that it doesn't have leather and wasn't 4WD, no leather, not my first color choice, made me just sour on this car.

Maybe that's irrational but that's where I am.

I am at a better place in my life, not walking around on crutches, and being very pro-active about my Element purchase experience. I'm positive that I will get something good out of this attitude and from the Element.

Can't wait! :D

I'm replacing my 1992 GMC Safari Extended with 103,000 miles. I got it because it's the only "minivan" (not so mini!) that you can lay 4' x 8' sheets flat in and close the back doors. Now I have a good lumberyard that delivers, but I still need a big cargo space for dump runs (no trash pickup where I live) and for the tons of stuff my wife and I seem to need whenever we go away for a few days.

My last vehicle was a '95 Dodge Ram 1500 Club Cab Long Bed SLT. It was loaded with all the options, including the 5.9 litre V8. Excellent truck! I drove it for 8 years and put 175,000 miles on it. It was 2WD. Gas mileage was 14 mpg average. When I first bought it, I lived 3 miles from the office. Gas mileage was not a deciding factor. I needed the truck because I own antique Studebakers (2). I travel to PA twice a year for Parts Swap Meets and need something to haul fenders and oily, greasy parts. Couldn't do that in a leather clad luxo-cruiser. Now my job is 136 miles from home. Been commuting this for 7 years now. Gas mileage IS a factor now. After this past winter, I decided 4WD is necessary. I went to look at a 2003 Ram Quad-Cab 4X4. Talk about sticker shock! $35,000! No way - that's almost what I paid for my house! :(

A friend told me about the new Pilot, so I went to take a look. We own 2 Civics right now (84 4-Door and 2000 4-door LX) so I know about Honda reliability first hand. Saw the E on the lot and thought: God, that's one UGLY looking thing!

Looked at the Pilot and deided it was another luxo-cruiser and would not do. The saleswoman showed me the E instead. I told her I wouldn't be caught dead in something like that! :? Once I looked inside and saw the utility of the vehicle, I had a revelation! This works. :o It had the leg room I wanted in the back seat and the easy cleaning for all those old parts I have to haul. Took it out for a test drive and the rest is history! I was hooked. :P

Ordered the SOP EX 4WD on the spot. I love this vehicle. Wonderful on gas (compared to my old Ram) and full-time 4WD is fantastic (yes, the first morning I had it, I drove it to work (2.5 hours each way) in a snow storm. Handled like a dream. I had an extreme case of the "warm, fuzzies" all the way.

After 5 weeks of ownership, and 3000+ miles, you couldn't get me out of this baby for love nor money! :D I expected it to be a little nervous on corners, due to the height. No way! Honda did their homework. My E handles corners like a go-cart. Talk about a fun vehicle!

I always tell people, " Mycar doesn't have to impress other people, but it sure as hell better impress me!" The E did all that and more. As for the looks, hey, beauty is only skin deep. Only kidding! Actually, I've changed my tune completely. I love the looks of the Element. I wouldn't change a thing!

See you on the Interstate! 8)

We replaced a 94 Toyota extended cab pickup. It was a good truck, but it drove like...a truck! We wanted something that could hold two mountain bikes inside and got reasonable mileage. Until the Element came along, we were just going to get another pickup.

Incidentally, in California, the dealerships have to post a rating of the vehicle's pollution output on scale of 1 to 10. The Toyota Tacoma got a 7, the Tundra an 8 and the Element a 1! That sort of clinched it for us.

It's replacing my beloved 1993 Suzuki Sidekick 4dr. A dream to drive, comfortable, great in the snow, and phenomenally reliable. Sadly the rear fenders are starting to rust quite badly and it's the beginning of what looks to be a series of replacements/repairs. Plus the E is so freakin' cool - how could I resist! Before the Suzuki I believe I owned the only completely worthless Honda Civic ever built - an 89 sedan, great to drive but a lemon. 17 tows in 4.5 years. Ugh.

I think the wife convinced me that it's not practical since I can't drive it for 3 or 4 months out of the year due to snow on the mountains ...

Seems everyone wants to answer this question! I replaced a 2002 Toyota Tacoma. It was a great truck but I guess I am just not a truck person. It only had 11k but I got a great price thanks to Toyotas resale value and moved back to my favorite auto make Honda. Before my Tacoma I had a 93 Civic Si for 9 years and 140k miles. A 2001 Impala LS, which by the way, we loved. Our intention had been to buy it after the lease ended. However, the car was prone to transmission problems. A new transmission was installed at 27,000 miles. At 41,500 miles--two weeks before the lease expired (and the extended warranty)--the trans had to be rebuilt again. That kind of cinched it for us, that buying the Impala would not be a good idea.

I had owned a 1982 Honda Prelude that I drove for over 9 years. The only problem I had was with the hydraulic clutch. Other than that it was routine maintenance.

I had seen the Element and a friend had driven one and raved about it. It was the only vehicle I looked at to replace the Impala. I've had the Element for one week now, and I'm really enjoying the heck out of it. People just love to ask me about it and want to get in it to check it out.

Replaced a '97 White Toyota Corolla. Great car, great mileage, very boring.
Went in search of larger sedan or small SUV. Was getting just a little sick of SUV's, Land Rovers trying to run over me.

Test drove Camry, RAV, Grand Vitara, Altima etc. A Nissan salesguy made his mistake when he offered "how would you like to drive an Xterra OR this Element we have on a trade in?" Had never considered an Element before.
Well, you guys KNOW what happened.

That E stayed on my mind. I started researching the net and found myself watching for E's in parking lots and on the road. E-obsesssion overtook me. Became afraid I was headed for being a character in a Stephen King novel.

Found the EOC!! Began emailing dealers, began shopping dealerships, squared dealers against each other. End result Dale's Magic Bus.

My Element replaced a 2001 Trooper. However, mine looked more like an SLX when I was done with its mods. I'd still have her, but she had a drinkin' habit. She loved petroleum. Both Gas and Oil. Had more problems than you could imagine. In about 7months, 2k in repairs. And another 1k in stuff we did in the driveway. Hated to see her go. I was dissappointed in its engineering. I think when Honda washed its hands with Isuzu, they really "Washed" Up...

My E is more of a social drinker. And I LOVE THAT!

Just sold it to a young dude who cannot wait to do a dozen mods on it since I kept it pretty stock. It only has 37,000 miles on it. Happy to see it go to a good home. FAR happier to have my E!

When we've finally done it, we will be replacing two cars. A 1993 Prelude, which still kicks butt, amzing car, very low miles, but doesn't fit the toddler. And a 1994 4Runner, also low miles and body in great shape, passing on to my brother. When I ran the annual cost numbers comparing an E to the 4Runner, including gas, maintenance, etc., we won't spend that much more a year for the E with a car payment than we are spending at the mechanic and gas station for the 4Runner.

Even with these two great cars, we badly want an E. That's how addicting they are!

Mine replaced a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid. For the first 15,000 miles, I loved my Hybrid - but then it started dying without notice and was in the shop more than it was in my driveway - it was eventually voluntarilly "reacquired" by Ford (think of a voluntary lemon law). So they offered me a replacement vehicle of any Ford with the same MSRP. I chose a Sport Trac Limited V8 - which was nice (but still a Ford - which I was trying to get away from). A psuedo-pickup just wasn't my thing and it only got about 15mpg - so I quickly traded it in last week (it only had 800 miles on it) for my E. I couldn't be happier. I just wish I had looked at the E back when I was shopping for my Escape Hybrid - I could have saved myself $11,000 and had a better vehicle that was reliable, more versatile and would have held it's value better.

Oh well....live and learn.

It replaced two cars for me. A 98' Camry CE 5sp 4cyl and an 85 Toyota 4x4 pickup with a 22RE. Loved the car for driving to work and long trips. The gas mileage was great and it did well in winter. My pickup was a reliable, hard core, off road rig, but could only carry two and not much gear. And to be honest I only seriously off-roaded a few times when I owned it.

I was a die hard Jeep girl for quite some time! I had a 99 Wrangler Sport, had a Rubicon Express lift, big beefy tires, and was a true off road machine! I was obsessed with taking it on the rocks, to the snow, to the sand, etc... Then, my tranny decided it wasnt going to survive another adventure, so, I got ballsy and bought an E. I LOVE IT! Our E replaced a 97 Ford Ranger Splash w/ step side bed, MT, It was a nice truck, bad gas mileage though, and it could only hold two people, it had a blown head gasket, and when we traded it in, the guy said the clutch was going out too (which I don't think so cause it felt like that since we got it, i don't think he could drive...hehehe). So Long live the E!!! I love our E!

I had a 2000 Chevy Tracker 4x4. It was kinda nice while it lasted. Got it with about 85000 miles on it. It lasted about 3 years and in the last year the heat and a/c broke, a gasket by the catalytic converter broke, and one of the tires sprung a leak which I had to fill with air every week. Got rid of it with almost 115,000 on it. (ps. carmax is awesome for buying old cars) I currently have a 2007 Kiwi E AWD and I'm literally in heaven. - a 1995 Nissan Altima with about 200K KMs. Wasn't a bad car, but was starting to show its age. Plus, we live in the country and were getting tired of hauling stuff in a sedan. Also means we don't need to use the Dodge pick-up as much. And the biggest lesson from the Altima, don't buy a black car if you have a 2000 foot gravel driveway! We just rented an '08 mustang (not gt) for a 5 hour drive to Virginia to pick up our '04 E yesterday. We have owned quite a few mustangs over the years and were surprised how responsive the 6 pack was! Here's a pic, even though it was very temporary.

My new element replaced my 1997 RAV4 that I bought from my brother in 1998. I keep my cars a long time. I really miss my RAV4 and if they still made them today like they did in 1997 I would have bought another.

With my 1997 RAV4 I could very easily remove the back seats and roll my bike upright into the back and only have to take off the front tire. Can't do either of those things with the new RAV4.

Luckly she takes after her oldest brother and not the rest of the family so its still keep uber clean at all times. Man I miss driving that car, but we all grow up, buy houses, have dogs etc. meaning space is needed to move things that custom trunks and dropped cars just cant give, so the SC was a happy medium.

I thought the trooper was a car I would keep forever; 2.6L 4 was steadfast, except for an endless craving for head gaskets. It had 275,000 miles on it when I came across the E on Craigslist. I mentioned it to my wife of 34 years, who said "That's what I really wanted when we bought the 2007 Prius."
Who knew:confused:?
WE were really attached to the tropper, but it was to the point of being questionable in reliability, and we wanted a more comfy camping vehicle. After that, the choice was easy.
We are now the really proud owners of GimlE, a Fiji blue 2004 EXAWD Auto. OEM wind deflector, Mats, Yakima w/ deflector and quickmounts, Accord 17" 9 spokes, Tow package, manual hatch release, flashing side markers.
I'm a Master Auto Tech, worked for Acura/Honda since 1986. Assembly Crew Chief for Brammo/ Ariel Atom. Owned a shop for years, and willing to share info/advice as required. Glad to be on the forum, and share info about the greatest car I've ever owned, in a life filled with really great cars!

I just sold a 400 wheel-horsepower 2000 civic si coupe with a full-custom turbo kit and all the go-fast stuff that was so loud, your ears would bleed and rode so stiff your teeth would shatter out of your head. I actually would get scared when I got on the throttle... it was like having a rocket strapped to your a$$.

However, I too am in need of something more practical. Waaaaay more ;)

In fact, I don't have an Element yet and it is making me sad. Does anyone know of a good deal on a 2007 root beer SC? I'm looking for a motivated seller. That's my new dream-ride for my mountain-biking-centric lifestyle (but I'd consider any of the trims as long as the price was low enough; I've got cash in hand). Thanks!
