The gasoline fuel low indicator comes on when the E is down to about 3 - 4 gals. Today I had 260 miles on the ODO when it came on. Is this the "factory spec" for this setting or is the warning light coming on prematurely? Thanks in advance to any answers from this expert panel.

3-4? Hmm. Actually, for me it comes on in the 2-2.5 range, I think. A little bit premature, but...a blessing out west or on the PA or NJ tpk when you weren't really paying attention and it's a long way to the next service plaza...
Feature idea: It should *flash* when it reaches 1 - 1.5 gallons! :)

It's normal and has been spoken to, Ad Nauseum too! Some people are pissed that the light comes on before they're stranded on the side of the road...Go figure. If it bothers ya, go get gas.

I agree, but does anyone else notice that the needle on the gauge seems too close to E for the amount of gas that's left in the tank? I don't mind the light coming on while there's 4 gallons left in the tank, but if there's 4 left out of nearly 16 total, then there ought to be 1/4 tank showing at the needle when the light comes on. Yet, mine is always at 1/8th (or lower) when the light comes on. Despite this, I've only once been able to get 13 gallons in the tank on a fill-up. Every other time it's been < or = to 12 gallons.

Mine comes on with about 4 gallons left as well. It's no big deal, though. I would hate to get stranded on the side of the road with no gas. Talk about embarassment.
You could drive around with a gas can in the back with about 2 gallons and find out for sure how long you have when the light comes on. Just a thought. I do that with my Jeep because that gas gauge is extremely inaccurate.

Compared to my S-10 I got rid of which (before I had to replace the fuel pump/sender unit for $300) I ran out of gas about 6 times in the first 2-3 years, I love the fact that the E tells me when I need to start thinking of getting gas. On a trip to Michigan once, the light came on and I knew I wanted to stop for dinner in about 50 miles and 'knew' I had the gas to do it, so kept on driving and made it no problem. Think I only put like 13.5 gallons in at that fillup too.
My S-10's gauge would go about 1/4 tank PAST full when you filled it up normally, and it ran out at about 1/8.
After the fuel pump went out, I replaced it which includes a new sender unit, it was much better, but I never ran it out to see where it was truly empty.
