A-yup! This morning, teaching music to 5th grade kids at the school which sits out in a cornfield....some boy said, "Ew, there's a tick on me!" and he brought it up on a sheet of paper. At that point, I just put another piece of paper over it and started singing the Mexican Hat Dance and dancing on top of it. Then I put a child in charge of watching it while we had our music lesson. She had to make sure it didn't move. And she would gasp and let me know every time it moved. Blaik, one of my boys said, "Mrs. Z! You have to smash it's head!" So I handed Blaik a paperclip bent open, and Blaik became our hero of the day! HAHAHAHA.....

ZOMBIEinvader 05-02-2009, 07:14 AM My wife had one on her yesterday after we went out to see if the mushrooms were up.
She always freaks and strips all her clothes off. She checks them for ticks and then asks me to give her a once over.:)
hiker chick 05-02-2009, 09:58 AM Reported cases of lyme disease in the Washington area were up significantly last year.
Know what symptoms to look for (the "bullseye rash" is not present in all cases) and get to your doctor if you suspect.
And know what ticks transmit lyme. Tick pics here:
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/LYME/resources/TickMaster4_12b.pdf
Catch Lyme early and antibiotics should take care of it.
Let it go and it can be a protracted misery.
Good info here:
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/LYME/ld_transmission.htm
Let's be careful out there!

Have been to school on Lyme because of a nurse friend who battled it last year and another friend whose doctors suspected Lyme but never confirmed it.
Both of them live in the suburbs. Apparently one advantage we urban dwellers have is less lyme.

cmiddl01 05-06-2009, 01:21 PM Does anyone have a recommended flea/tick treatment? I've read such harsh things about K9 Advantix, Frontline, etc. about what the chemicals can do to dogs.
Please let me know what you are using on your dog because my dog is almost 3 and have I never used anything. I have been very lucky and I dont want to take my chances any longer.

here is a link to a natural tick repellant we have used in the past.

This place has a lot of natural stuff but not sure how well they work

Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds (15-20), after which the tick will come out on it's own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away.
The reason it works is because Ticks breath through their skin and the soap suffocates them. They back out to breath through their head and you have them.
Hondamade4dogs 05-09-2009, 10:13 PM And then save that tick, just incase something happens.
