I've read a couple threads about noises, and dealers having trouble solving them, so I decided to share a positive story with you all. I recently developed a creaking noise from what sounded like the top of the windshield on the passenger's side. I took it in, and after 4 days, and the removal of most of the dash, they found and fixed the source.
Apparently, the firewall steel plate, and the dash steel plate come together right under the windshield wiper cover. The seam had been pressed too closely together, and when the car flexed (over uneven pavement) the creaking sound would travel up the steel plate to the windshield, then out into the cabin. A perfect example of what these service folks have to deal with when searching for sounds. Metal transmits sound efficiently, so the source can be feet from where the sound seems to emanate.
Anyway, to fix it, they drove a wedge between the two plates to separate them a little, then ran a bead of caulk down the length. I give my service department credit for chasing this thing down with what looked like the entire service department staff and a stethoscope. Thanks O'Donnell Honda!! And good luck to all of you with a creak, rattle, thump, or whistle! :)
