If you've seen some of the fj cruisers on the road, I love thier tires and wonder if they would fit our e's

Do you know what brand they are, and what size? How does that compare with the size of the stock tires? You can go about an inch larger in diameter, 20, maybe 30 mm larger in section width. If you don't know how to calculate tire diameter, you can look up specific models and sizes on 'spec' tables from the manufacturer or tire retailers.

See if you can figure this out for yourself before someone cheats and gives you the answer :)

Really? The FJ has a wimpy looking stock tire. A lot of those guys put on aftermarket tires.

Here is mine...

Has about a 2.5inch lift and 235-70-16 tires. Its technically the second largest tire you can put on the element. 225-75-16 is the biggest due to the strut, but they are only like .2 inches apart in size

Can't beat General Grabber AT2s for the money. I used to only run BFG AT KOs and Long Tails on everything but, after several quality issues I switched to Grabbers and have been thoroughly impressed.
I do not run these in the summer any more since they greatly decrease fuel economy. I have Bridgestone Dueler HTs on the stock rims and they are pretty good. So far with only 15,000 miles on them they still look new and I am getting close to 25mpg vs. 20mpg with the Grabbers.

My sig lists one option that looks beefier.

The stock size for the FJ (I looked on a Toyota site) is 265/70/17, which is about 31.7" in diameter. That's 2 1/2" larger than can be fit on an Element. I did not find a listing of what the stock brand is. For their off-road package the tires are 265/75/16, BFG Rugged Trails (about same diameter as stock).

The easiest way of adding a rugged look to your Element is to get BFG TA KOs in the stock size, 215/70/16. While people have go up to 235 width, there isn't a serious reason to do so. Rugged Trails come in 235/70/16. Judging from the sidewalls and shoulders, I don't think there will be fit problems with these.

My last E had Cooper Discoverer ATRs on them (in stock size) when I purchased it. Attached is a pic when I first purchased.

I was happy with them, but was going to go even more aggressive when they needed replaced (and probably slightly larger than stock, either on 15s or 16s steelies) . . . I was partial to BFG ATs, but for a less expensive tire I would have gone with Yokohoma Geolanders or General Grabbers.

I guess it depends on you definition of 'beefier'. I have 255/55-17 Nitto Terra Grapplers.

When it's raining you can hear a squeal when you turn the tires where it rubs against a little ridge in the wheel well. It's nothing that you feel, though.

I'e been running on Dueler HL's for almost 2 years now, and they are the best I've tried so far. I live in upstate New York, and I have found that they are fantastic in the snow! As for regular highway and around town usage, I have no complaints. Road noise is low, and they perform in rain fairly well too.

Prior to this, I ran whatever Honda had on there stock, and they were weak, short lived pieces of poop.

Someone mentioned Dueler HT's... anyone else have any opinions on those?
I don't get the difference between the HL's and the HT's.

THey look like Kumho Road Venture MT KL71 (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Road+Venture+MT+KL71).

Yep, Kumho's. I was looking at BFG A/T or Muds but these were a little beefier and actually cheper by $20. I forgot where I ordered them from though. I'll try to remember. Sure they are overkill but why not!

I don't have an E yet (plan on buying a new one within the month when I've saved up enough for the down payment!), but I'm currently running Hankook Dynapro MT's on a lifted Ford F250 Super Duty, and they are the best mud tires I've ever had. I will almost certainly get them for the E when I get it.

With BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 or Kuhmo Road Venture MT KL71 in 225-75-16 on factory alloy wheels...

Are there issues with rubbing?
Is there any room for chains at all?

Does the BF Goodrich 235-70-16 fit better?

No rubbing with Kumhos'. There is no room for chains, just your finger.:)

The wife drove the E home in the rain from a recent camping trip and by the time she got home she was insistent that i get the stock tires replaced. So at approx 25k on the odometer I have some new 225/70/16 Nokian Vatiiva AT's that replaced the stock Badyears. They are not the most aggressive AT tire but they have proven so far to be exactly what I was looking for. I only have about 750 miles on them (which explains all their whiskers in the photos) but I have high hopes that they will deliver consistently with what I have heard about other Nokian tires. Rain experience has been great so far and they should only get better once they have been scrubbed in a little. (if all the siping is wrong, I don't want to be right) If nothing else I have indulged the demands of the wife.........

and yes, my driveway is a hill so some of the pics look a little askew.

The Vatiivas seem like they would be an ideal tire on the Element. The Vatiiva M/Ts would be fun too.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j300/pigryder/Element008.jpgI ran the Kumho KL71s about three years ago when I got my E and Im now running the General Grabbers AT2s, I loved the looks and the assurance of having an almost bulletproof tire. The downfall was a super heavy tire and they cupped bad after about 20k and got soo noisey I had to swap them out. I almost bought another set becasue I liked them so much but went with the Grabbers and I dont think any other tire has ever impressed me as much as the Grabbers have. I still have the Kumhos if anyone wants them?
