Here is my plan.

HP4155 IPAQ.
-I need one anyway for stuff, contacts, etc.
-Comes with wireless 802.11b and Bluetooth
-can get updates and can hold more info than most stand alone GPS.
-can use as mp3 player too.

Mounting PDA Cradle made for Element
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=33695&item=2455165685&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT

Bluetooth GPS.
-Mounted in back and plugged into rear power source.
-Antannae runs up and next to radio antannae
-wireless connection to IPAQ.
http://www.socketcom.com/product/GP0805-406.asp or maybe a cheaper one..there are a few out there.

Cool features:
1. PDA is multifuntional and you can take it out of the car anytime, easily.
2. GPS can stay mounted in car, possibly a permanent install, out of site.
3. Any bluetooth phone can connect to the gps too. Example: You could call someone and know exactly where they are, i.e. kids etc.
4. PDA integration: you can simply select one of your contacts from outlook and get voice directions immediately.

Yes, this costs more than most GPS stand alone, yet it can be a permanent install and no one would know it was there. But the cool factor is unbeatable.

Emass uses a Magellan 750NAV navigation system w/voice prompts and says it works great but hed be the guy to talk to about it.
Me i see no need for one when I have the girlfriend by my side. Take this weekend for example on the way home from DC we had a conversation like this one...
her: you want to go this way
me: are you sure
her: yes im looking at the map
me: your 100% positive
her: yep
10 minutes later
her: we made a wrong turn
me: where
her: back there at the big place

Of course my disclaimer... this post is meant for educational use only. its not a crack on women I SWEAR. oh and please dont tell on me LOL

Hehe... My wife's Grandmother has the reputation in the family for being "Able to drive from any seat in the car."

Last year when her grandfather was shopping for a new car, the salesman was showing Grandpa the "OnStar" feature. Grandpa listens to the salemans pitch and simply replies "That's nice, but I've had a something installed in my car since the mid-forties that accomplishes most of that for free." The saleman seems puzzled at this statement but doesn't say anything. Then thay take a Grand Prix out for a test drive. Grandma proceded to tell the saleman.. "turn here.... use your signal... slow down... turn here..." and my favorite line - the saleman was at a stoplight explaining something about the car... the light turns green but he doesn't go right away.. and Grandma says "Go if yer goin'!"

Last spring, my wife and I went to Fort Myers, FL to visit them along with most of my wife's family... We decided one night at low tide to go shelling off of Sanabel / Captiva Island. Since we had so may people we had to take more than one vehicle. We had a little lottery to decide who got to take Grandma. She ended up in a different vehicle than I was driving so I thought I was safe. I had been to Sanibel *many* times and knew the way there, and we took walkie talkies to keep all the cars in contact for the drive. And wouldn't you know it... We were getting ready to turn on the Sanibel Causeway when the little radio pipes up "Turn to the right here!"

So we learned Grandma cannot only drive from any seat in the car, but she can drive from any seat in *any* car...

PS oh yes... and as far as GPS goes... I use the DeLorme Earthmate and a laptop computer in my Element.

I actually position it right in the middle, above the speedometer now... but as for sliding and stuff... only during emergency braking and very agressive cornering. it doesn't block my view at all - in fact it's in the perfect position to take a quick glance down at. There's also voice prompts that come from the speaker unit/power cord.

if you don't like the beanbag, it also comes with a mount so you can permanently attach it to the dash. (even if you attach the mount, you can still remove the unit at any time)

I use garmin V and it's pretty good for the 300 or so ebay price. It does a fair job of door to door routing. Before that I had an emap which was great for geochaching and for helping IF you needed to verify directions, find your car in the parking lot or backtrack your way from somewhere.

I use a Garmin StreetPilot 2610 using the bean bag mount in my Element and can switch it over to my Golwdwing GL1800 using a mount attached to the clutch reservoir. I've had GPS's going back to '93 and the 2610 is superb for navigation. It is also a real godsend on a motorcycle because you can't be reading a map and riding at the same time.

you should check out this alpine unit:

http://www.alpine-usa.com/html/navigation/products/navigation_nvd-a211.htm

it's what honda uses as its OEM navigation system in the accord, pilot, etc...

Question for Neil-in-Seattle:

While riding on your Goldwing, does the touchscreen function properly with riding gloves? We seem to have similar interests in the use of the Garmin, eg., Use in/on the Element and on a Goldwing (I've got a 2000 GL1500SE). Did you consideror have you used the Garmin StreetPilot III with the buttons instead of the touchscreen?
