Mike,

It's just Josh letting you know that messages that are all in CAPS can come across as yelling. Sometimes that's what you want. Other times it can get in the way of whatever message you're sending.

So, just a heads-up.

Steve,
Thanks for letting me know. This was my first time posting something.

Thanks,
Mike D.

Ok, with all that out of the way:

I've seem comments on dynomat and/or noise-proofing elsewhere on the forumss. The response to queries was, essentially: "yes, it helps".

Myself, I just turn up the rock! If you're listening to classical or other quiet passeges, though, you might need the dynomat more than I do.

You might want to try using the search feature above and looking up dynomat and other product names, I'm sure you'll find posting on it! :)

If anyone on this board got around to installing Dynomat - It would have been EMass.... But from what I understand he is selling/sold his E.

On that note - if I was looking for *anything* pertaining to audio systems for the E I'd search for posts from EMass.

Dynomat is not about keeping the vehicle sound proof. It is used to tighten the sound itself up. Many cars are very cheap in how they are constructed. The metal skin is extremely thin so the sound reverberates off the outer skin and back into the cabin itself. This creates a horrible sound no matter how loud or quiet the music being played might be.

The quality of the speakers, amps, head units, etc make no difference if the platform that the equipment is installed in is horrible acoustically.

Just closing the door on the E tells me that it will require dynamat when I replace the speakers in 2005. If you can hear an echo when closing a door, then the quality of the metal and its subscructure is inexpensive and flimsy. This to me is classic Japanese car construction from the 70's and 80's. They had gotten better in the 90's but I guess they are going back to poorer metals... or this is Honda's way of keeping the costs down.

Dynamat will make the car much heavier, so you need to be careful as to how much you install. It creates some very nice dead zones in a vehicle and should be placed where it is needed, generally around where the speakers are installed to begin with. Then if you hear sound vibrations you would lay sheets in various places before sticking it down to see if it helps at all.

Not every car needs to use dynamat in it for a stereo. When I built my TT stereo I didn't use dynamat in it. The car was nice and solid and offered a nice platform in which to install a stereo. Bass response was amazing in tnat car... 137.5db in one competition I entered using 2 8" subs.

Note My comment above about the quality of the Element doors does not mean I am not happy with the Element. It just means I am somewhat disappointed in Honda. I honestly thought that the Japanese companies got away from such shoddy materials way back when... Maybe the metal itself is fine and there is just a lack of sound proofing in the doors... but every time I shut my door it is obvious that it lacks a nice solid feel to it. This actually only seems to hold true for the 2 front doors, the rear doors do seem pretty solid when you close them.

My take on this is two fold:

1) It's not just the door materials, it's also the lack of carpeting/plus material in the car. It's an echo zone with all the plastic.

2) If the door materials are more flimsy than, say, a CR-V, that may have been an attempt to compensate weight-wise for fuel economy reasons on this slightly larger vehicle.

I placed Dynamat on the 2 front doors only, works pretty good.

I was in my local car audio/alarm/tinting store today and they sell Dynamat in various selections. I asked about the medium sized box that weighed about 30 pounds and they said it cost $250 plus $100 to install.

All I can say is woweeeee!!! Me thinks Dynamat needs a generic version or their patent pulled for goughing!

I was thinking of doing it. Actually getting a Lloyd Heavyweight one piece mat for the front area instead of the OEM Honda ones. They are about as dense and thick as carpeted mats get, plus it has a layer of urethane to help with sound dampening. I've been driving an Audi for awhile, so I've been a bit spoiled with a quiet ride. So outside of improving acoustics, I wouldn't mind quieting the ride either.

Dynamat too expensive? Consider Fatmat: http://www.fatmat.com/kits/index.htm

...also B-Quiet or Brown Bread: http://www.b-quiet.com/

PartsExpress also has a number of options: http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?webpage_id=3&SO=2&&DID=7&CATID=34&ObjectGroup_ID=37

Or... For those on a REALLY tight budget consider picking up some "Ice Shield" from Home Depot or Lowes. It's viscoelastic sheeting w/adhesive and is a little harder to work with but produces fairly decent results.

If you're on less of a budget, consider checking out this stuff: http://secondskinaudio.com/secondskin.html - I'm using it on a restoration project 65 lincoln continental (with killer stereo) that'll look something like this when finished:

http://derek-kelly.home.comcast.net/65project.jpg

it just occured to me that I must have a "thing" for suicide doors between the E and the lincoln. :D

Another cheaper alternative to the Dynamat is, ice gaurd it's a roofing product, it was an experiment that a friend of mine has done to his WRX, he used Ice gaurd on the one door, and dynamte on the other an the sound is incredible on both ends... so he pulled the dynamate and replaced it (including the trunk) with Ice gaurd for a total of 50 bucks he had enough to do his WRX and Montero

i am such a moron. i went to the local home depot to look for ice guard and I searched in the roofing section for a good 20 minutes before i realized "wait a minute, I live in southern California...of course they don't sell Ice Guard here!"

It's off to Circuit City now for Cascade sound dampeners...any opinions on this product?
