: Ready to install speakers but....

I've got my speakers now - CDT CL61a components for the front and CDT CL6x co-ax for the rear. I picked up the speaker wiring connectors and foam baffles for both front and rear.

My primary question is about the cross-overs. I see that the EX has high pass filters for the tweeters. So, do I remove the high-pass filters and use the cross-overs instead? If so, where is the best place to tap in to the speaker wiring? I assume that the speaker line leaving the amp has some sort of junction where one pair of wires goes through the door to the mids and the other heads on up to the A-pillar to the tweeters. Am I correct on how that works?

Anything other tips that come to mind? I know those CDT comps are kinda deep so I might need to build a set of spacers. And I've heard that I should actually cut out a section from the bottom of the foam bafffle to help improve the sound quality.

Thanks,

Steve

I have CL-61a installed in the front and I think they sound sweet! Just some odd notes before I address your questions.

* Be prepared to cut a lot out of the speaker opening in the front door.

* Do yourself a favor and make a cut out marking the diameter opening and the location of screwholes. Makes install much more exact and easier.

* Use metal tabs as suggested by eMass for new screwholes.

You will remove the high pass filter since it is attached to the factory tweeter. Check Element-J's pictorial for illustrations. http://www.govst.edu/users/gallery/element-j/

If you don't mind cutting factory wiring then anywhere after the factory amp is fine. I wanted to keep mine as stock as possible in case I decide to sell the car and reinstall factory equipment. I started my own wire run from the front factory speaker harness. I ran wires to the crossovers and components from there.

You are incorrect. The factory components are wired in series in this manner. amp > woofer > tweeter

I am not sure what you mean by the CDT comps, I thought you are buying the classics. As for cutting foam baffles and tweaking you'll have to ask eMass. I am more a Lego type installer not so much on the tweaking and finesse.

Silk,

Thanks for the rundown. Your odd notes will probably come in very handy. I did find the element-j site (very nice site, btw) but it looked like he had retained the high-pass filters. That seems like the easy approach but I figure that I'm paying for the cross-overs and they're part of the set so I'm probably much better off using those.

Oh, comps = forgot to spell out components.

Are those metal tabs something you can pick up anywhere? Radio Shack, etc?

Again, thanks for the info.
