Only about 25 minutes from Los Angeles is Vasquez Rock Park, a destinctive area carved by the California earthquakes and the site of numerous settings for TV shows and movies, like Roswell, the old Star Trek, Austin Powers, and the Planet of the Apes remake. It got some great trails for those that hike.

Funny, when I lived in LA for five years my job took me to Lancaster/Palmdale one day. I saw the funny rock formations and felt compelled to pull over and check them out. Strangest rock formation you can expect to see in LA. Reminds me of the giant worms in Dune jumping out of the ground.
Go Jethawks!

You know, for the 25 years I lived in the area (grew-up in Lancaster), I never managed to visit the park. Saw the rocks from Hwy. 14 frequently - twice a day during the commute years - but never managed to stop.
Funny the interesting stuff you don't visit when it's in your backyard - familiarity breeds contempt? For two years we lived walking distance from Knott's Berry Farm, and not once did we go in.
