: How many times can one windshield crack in different places?
spldr 02-03-2004, 09:37 PM I dunno. Since mine is ruined anyway, and I don't have time to take it in just yet, and the cracks don't block my view, and Honda refuses to take care of it...
I will just let mine sprout new ones. As of today, also under the same circumstances as everyones else..car parked (It must ave been out rough housing while I was away, thinking it wouldn't get caught playing on its own) a new crack showed up dead center of the bottom of the 'shield. Creeped up about 4 " but has yet to "mate" with the one going across the 'shield. I am sure it will eventually.
Ho Hum.. this is turning into quite the science experiment. Hope some engineers are reaqding here...

music&dogs 02-04-2004, 07:19 AM Wow; I can't believe all the cracked windshields on this board. My E is only four months old and I'm beginning to feel that a cracked windshield is inevitible eventually. Seems like Honda really should recall these if they're this vulnerable to cracking. I wonder what percentage of E owners have this problem; just curious.

wow... 69 complaints on the NHTSA site! out of about 55,000 element sold to date that would account for only 0.0125% of element owners. but wait, someone said that this calculation is useless because it only accounts for people that have complained to the NHTSA. fine, even if multiplied by 5 it would only still about for 0.0625% of element experiencing this "problem". if the cost for honda to settle these problems is less than the cost of a model-wide recall... guess what? no recall.
and also, there are 3900 members on this site, of which i'd say less than 1/4 are active members. the rest come here and post when they have a problem, and go away when it is "solved" so it only seems like "everyone" is having windshield or other issues. but it only seems that way. i have 15,000 miles on my E and have had it for 10 months now, and none of these problems that "everyone" has been talking about has appeared on my element. hell, i've taken a road trip up to SF from LA with numerous rocks hitting the windshield but no cracks.
and while i am sympathetic to those who do get cracked windshields, they're creating a hysteria amongst the E community.
and if my windshield does crack, i'll eat my words on a silver effin' platter. but it'll be okay cuz of $0 insurance on stuff like this.
BigFoot 02-04-2004, 09:44 PM I'm with you Shen, a minor issue not to lose sleep over. If it happens, either Honda or State Farm will fix it.
spldr 02-04-2004, 10:13 PM My first crack happened at 18k, you have are not out of the woods yet.
I post here about all things, not just problems.
Out of the 55000 folks that own Elements, or any other car, how many do you think know about the NHTSA or whether or not they can use it in any way? I think it is safe to say that percentage wise, the same percentage rate applies to all models of vehicles as it does to the Element.
I did a little research and comparison. Something that one needs to do before they make broad statements concluding statistics are meaningless.
Here is just a brief result of 10 whole minutes research:
I looked for windshield cracking issues in random, but similar styled 2003 model autos/mini suvs. Apples to Apples.
There are complaints for spontaniously cracked windshileds for:
75 Elements
1 CRV
0 Odyssey
0 Escape,
and
2 2002 KIA Sportage (I didn't see sportages even listed for 2003, I do not know if it is still made, or there has never been a compliant about anything on a 2003)
and for grins, I looked up 2003 Civics.. the answer is 0.
Also since the Scion B is only marketed in LA, and there are not that many out, it really isn't a fair comparison to add them in.
75 vs. 1 vs 0 vs. 0 vs. 2 is a significant indicater that there is a problem here with Elements, even tho the overall percentage of incidents compared to units sold may be low.
I also work for a very large and well known company as a SR. member of the Quality Assurance staff. If I were to take the attitude of "Oh well, it isn't that many, we will just let the customer find it and fix as needed" my butt would be in a sling, and they would swing it out to the street. Even if it was just one unit.
And in this case, Honda isn't even "Fixing As Needed".
I am just as proud of my Element as the next person, and I sure hate to say there is anything wrong with it, I have bragged it up, and all my other Honda products up so much. But on the same note, I cannot deny when there is a problem. The #s above show that there is every reason to think there is.

On the other hand, Morgan is on her fourth windshield...some others are on their third already...

Precisely. I have insurance that covers this too, so, it's not the money. It's getting the CAUSE of the problem investigated and fixed instead of just fixing the windshield only.
Honda needs to recognize there is a problem first before they can troubleshoot it.
STO7M 02-11-2004, 05:42 PM Anyone want to buy a slightly used Element with great trimmings?
I'll even throw in the cool 12v map light I got from Brookstone!
I am gettin' me a SILVERADO!
