eMass 02-06-2004, 10:36 PM Sure, pick up an RF Modulator - these cost about $35 and plug inline between your factory radio antenna line and head unit basically hijacking the signal when you flip a switch. These units provide a pair of RCA jacks which can be used like a aux port.
Do not confuse this with an FM Transmitter which wirelessly broadcasts a signal which you tune on the factory head unit. The sound quality of wired units like the ones I describe above are far superior.

Do RF modulators exist that work with FM? I've seen them for TV but not radio.

Thanks a lot!
I actually had an Jensen FM modulator on my last car and it worked great. I was however hoping for an audio input on the back of the unit. That way I'd just have to plug in wires to it. Anyway, I guess I'll go with the FM modulator. I got my last one at Circuit City for $20 about 2 years ago but now they don't carry them anymore and the only place to get one for a decent price is Ebay.
If anyone else is interested just go to Ebay and do a search for "FM Modulator" (not RF 'cause that's for your TV).

Not necessarily - AFAIK - RF just stands for Radio Frequency and as such it is a fitting description of what this is even though not many people use it to commonly describe the adapter.
I'm sure you're right. All I was trying to say is that on Ebay if you search for "RF Modulator" you get the modulators that give you extra video and audio inputs for your TV. If, on the other hand, you search for "FM Modulators" you find the units that provide you with an audio input only (for your radio).
I think the reason is because the manufacturers use the term "FM modulator" for an audio only unit that modulates signals in the FM frequency spectrum. They use RF as a more general term to cover both video and audio. This makes it easier to diferenciate between products even though a "FM Modulator" is most definitely also a RF Modulator.
Anyway, none of this is really important. I hope to get one soon and I'll let you guy know where I got it from and how mutch it cost.
And finally...one other note for people thinking of doing this. On my last unit, I also had to install a power switch so that I could turn the modulator on/off. In the on position, the modulator turns off the input from the antenna and turns on the RCA input. It's kind of annoying to have to push the switch each time when I want to change between the MP3 player and the radio. If you have the money, I think there may be some units out there that will sense an RCA input and automatically turn it on.
BEFORE I buy an FM Modulator, Can someone PLEASE let me know if you are sure there is no way to connect an aux input to the DX CD Player. On the face of the player, there is a button that says CD/AUX. Does anyone know if its possible to connect an AUX input directly to the CD player, and if possible, can you tell me where to connect the wires to?
Thanks a lot!

Hmm... I wonder if these guys would have what you need:
http://www.rcainput.com
I'm assuming it would attach the same way that the factory cassette or MP3 player would to the DX radio.
No connection, just saw them in relation to an article I was reading.

Thanks. I looked at the website but it costs 99 dollars for the adapter. When I have some time I will go ahead and pull out the stereo to see what I can figure out. If I can't make it work (without the $99 adapter), I'll get an FM Modulator from Ebay.
Anyone else have any info on this? (I guess there aren't a lot of people here with the factory DX CD player)
brendan 02-18-2004, 04:30 PM Yeah, never seen photos of the back. If you do pull it out, take pictures of the different sockets on the back. The EX head unit (which we are all familar with) has four separate sockets for four plugs (3 of which exist in a stock EX Element):
1) honda standard power/control/speakers connector, except line-level output instead of speaker output since the channel are going through the amp.
2) aux connector
3) subwoofer connector
4) cd changer connector

I will do it this weekend if I don't go skiing. I will post pictures of my findings.
Ok...I took out the head unit today after work. It was a lot easier than expected (only took about 5 minutes). I'm very dissapointed right now. There are only TWO sockets on the back of the DX CD player.
The first socket, and only one being used, has the main wiring harness connected to it. It looks like the black socket with light blue plug here:
http://www.govst.edu/users/gallery/element-j/head_unit.html
The next socket is empty and looks just like the one that element-j says is for the "optional CD changer."

There is no aux socket. I still wonder if there is a way to turn some of the leads from the "optional CD changer" socket into a useful AUX input but I'm afraid that I'll have to go with the FM modulator unless someone has this information.
Thanks a lot for your sugestions!
