The past couple of years or so it seems it's been very hard to get things to work out when it comes to our camping trips. :-(

I was thinking about what to do about that and spent some time reflecting back on some of the past trips.
One that kept coming to mind was the Knotts Island / Ferry Ride trip (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?p=447334) we did back in '07.

What do you guys think? Time to try and fill that dang boat with a bunch of E's? We almost did before...

A boat load of E's (almost)
80436

Baxter says he's ready
80435

What do you guys think? Maybe Mid-October or so?
We've got folks in the Va. Beach area that can run point on this, I really need a good trip, don't you?

Benny, I like this thread! Sorry, I can not join in for the fun but it's great to see you active again. I hope you will get enough people to pull it off.

Thanks for posting a picture of happy Baxter! :-)

Hi Jea! It's a ways off till October, maybe you guys can make it down, it should be nice on the beach - not quite crowded, but still not cold. Besides, there should be some excellent company, and the dogs... :-)

We'll see how it goes, but like I said before the last time we did this it went very well, one of the best trips ever.

Great idea Benny, I will take point on this. I will get the info up on the ferry and the local campground we stayed at the last time. TBC.

:razz:Do you have spaces available for Oct 15-17, 2010? We are a small club needing approx. 5-10 various spaces for small Teardrop/Pop-up/travel trailer type, plus tent site, some needing water/elec. only. I will have more info in near future, please get back to me, some of us have stayed there before and love the place. Bob
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Mr. Ruger,

We have plenty of space available for the weekend of October the fifteenth through the seventeenth. All of our water and electric sites are available and we have some full hook-up sites across the street as well that are available if they are needed. You could also rent out a couple of sites that are known as our family zones that are water and electric sites that are allowed a tent on the site. This will be very convenient for you and your group if your trying to keep every one in the same location and the family zones are also near all the rest of the water and electric sites. If you have any further questions, feel free to call our offices at (757) 426-6241 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. or leave a message with your name and number and we will return the call as soon as possible.

Thank you for considering North Landing Beach as your camping resort.
Have a wonderful day.

bh241
07-12-2010, 06:25 PM
I wouldn't fret the bad reviews, this is the same place we stayed back in '07 isn't it? :?

At any rate, vacation days are submitted and approved. So if someone knows a better campground by all means hop in with recommendations, but I think we traveled this road before. Didn't someone drive down and physically evaluate the campgrounds last time? I guess I can go back and read the thread and see, but I think that's what went down.

The old thread from the '07 trip in the Mid-Atlantic forum is here (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?p=447334#post447334). Picture thread is here (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38239).

Anyway, someone make the call and let's get this trip publicized, we got a big ole boat to fill....

Well said Mel, it is what you make of it, we had a great time, playing the games, staying up late talking, making new friends, eating great, etc.

No matter where you go, and I have been to a lot of places, you are going to get complainers who either paid too much or weren't having the fun we had. It only takes a few bad comments to spoil others fun, but not the Eples!

Come have a great time, guaranteed by YOU!

I'll talk to Elaine about putting this one on the calender...

As far as campgrounds go...I have to agree with Spotman...it's what you make of it, and the company you have...
We've camped in some pretty crappy places, with just the family, and hated it - too much noise, ppl too close etc etc, but never seem to have that issue when it's Eppl camping...it's all in the perspective...lol

Fire Elf and I are a go!....It will even be possible for me to drive the E and let Denny drive the truck with the camper down :) so we won't be "out of the loop" so to speak.

John, I think you're right. This is going to be another one for the 'books' so to speak. The last time we did this it was great.

I'm wondering now what if we wind up with too many E's? I think the ferry lists 18 as the limit, but we had 16 the last time, and they put another four or five cars/trucks and a couple or three motorcycles on there too... I guess we could always go back and look, but there were way more than 18... :|

Anyway, we'll cross that bridge when / if we get there - too many showing up would be a unique problem.

I didn't think about the state fair, honestly it never crossed my mind... was more looking at getting this in before wintertime really.

Bob, do you think it's possible to get the same general area we were in before? That worked really well for pretty much everyone, well other than the ones that want to stay in the cabins I guess... :| But it was convenient for those in trailers, popups, and tents. We managed to pretty much stay together, and stay in their 'rules' about tents in tent spaces...

No - unless you just want to. The campground is accessible from land routes. Basically it's about 30 miles (about 48km) due South of Va. Beach, VA.

If we do like we did last time, we'll all get together and do the ferry trip from Knotts Island to Currituck - about a 45 minute trip. If I were to guess I would say take the Noon ferry, but it's way too early to say really.

Have a picnic dinner there at Currituck and then drive back to camp via the scenic drive around the Currituck Sound.

...what if we wind up with too many E's? I think the ferry lists 18 as the limit, but we had 16 the last time, and they put another four or five cars/trucks and a couple or three motorcycles on there too...

I think they probably just use the number 18 as a rationale and a control mechanism when they need to. These vessels have MGW limitations that have a reasonable safety factor built in, and like an aircraft, I'm sure the captain has a certain amount of discretion within those boundaries. The E is a light vehicle, and if they can physically fit 26 or 30 on board, it probably won't even approach their weight limits.

I could be wrong, but just thinking.......

This is probably more realistic, me and a couple of the 'boys' for the weekend. I am thinking right now we should be arriving at camp between 1pm - 3pm on Friday.

Baxter went last time and Boomer has been on other trips. The both did exceptionally well, it's time to see how they would do together. Heck, if Mel brings Sampson and Delilah I aught to be able to deal with Boomer and Baxter.

Spoke to Jessica (POC) 757-426-6241, she gave me some ideas on where we can gather.

If we chose the upper left area sites 48-65 and 75-94, we can put a trailer and a tent on one site and pay a total of $32.17 for each trailer and tent, minus a 10% discount. This will include the one hook up for water and electric to share.

Or, We can be under a lot of trees, stay in one area,, but, the sites will be "FULL" hookups for RV's and it will cost $44.07 for trailers and $32.17 for tents, minus a 10% discount.

Before you call to make reservations, (Mention the Element Owners Club) lets toss this around when we get a firm count to see if everyone wants to stay that close. Plus there a Cabins to rent, check out the site.

Bob, slight clarification please: 1) I presume the fees cited are daily. 2) Option 2 "We can be under a lot of trees". Is the first area devoid of trees? I like to have some trees around - shade, windbreak, etc.

John, 1) Fees are daily. 2) I prefer under trees also, but will get more clarification on shaded sites available. She said to check back with her after we get a good consensus of what people want. Also said it won't be that busy in Oct. Good campfire weather anyway here in Oct.

Bob,

Check and see if we could get where we were last time, it worked well I thought. We had all that room across the street (in front of the tents) where we could park all pretty...

I think the tent sites were either some kind of group thing or just no-frill sites, but we all stayed over at the trailers anyway.

It was closer to the water too.

Colin's post (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showpost.php?p=469316&postcount=481) from last time has some nice visuals. :-)

Trees, I like trees....

What about the waterfront tent sites? Can you drive the E's on the beach and set up camp? If so, I would want that. If not, I like treees. and close proximity to the restrooms.

Spotman
07-26-2010, 07:39 AM
We can practically go where anyone wants during that time, yes you can drive onto the beach area now and camp right on the water. Benny, that site we had all the tents in, circled, is now one giant Party Pavilion.80782

I am still getting msgs. back from people with different ideas of where to camp, because some are just tenting, some have small campers (teardrop, pop-up, etc) and some want to bring a large 27' camper to make it "Party Central". Keep tossing them ideas out E-ple, we will have a great party, as usual, and see some old friends and make new ones.8)
Did I mention, the Ferry ride was still "FREE".

bh241
07-26-2010, 08:22 AM
Yea it was pretty much a party pavilion when we were there too, well other than the pavilion part I guess... ;-)

You know as long as we're not slap out in the open sun - somewhere totally devoid of trees I really won't care.

Unless something has changed, the area they were recommending looks a lot like a flappin' parking lot... :|

I need electric water and something inmoveable to tie the dogs to.
A pull through site is best or just bring your lawn chairs and prepare to be entertained while I back the trailer in.

I've been following the posts on this, is a invite required to participate? I've not met any EOC members, and never camped in that area and would love to participate, if it's ok to self invite; AND if husband agrees. We're not spring chickens but love to camp and meet people and hang out @ campfires! and bring our silly little dog with us, and drink beer, and a ferry ride would be fun..... <she says all this shyly, hopefully> Buffy

Nice price, and it includes a bunch of stuff as well, not the least of which is a set of sidewall curtains and mats that turn the awning into an extra room. I'll have to add brakes, and I'll probably add a set of tires (they're original) but that's about it. Now I have two things I have to mod!

OK Boys and Girls, just spoke to Jessica at North Landing, she said go ahead and make those reservations. I told her to try and keep us all close together, so I suggested sites 14-32, with full hookups. Those that want to camp on the Beach, go for it, it is beautiful. If you need a cabin, mention it.

MOST OF ALL: MENTION YOU ARE A MEMBER OF THE (EOC) ELEMENT OWNERS CLUB.

Welcome back, Bob. We missed you.

I trust you and MaryBeth had a great time camping and would love to see some pics when they get posted. (A link would do just fine.)

Hey John,

Congrats on the camper. I Googled the model number 'cuz I had no idea what it was... looks sweet. I'm interested to see how that "extra room" works.

After much thought, I plan on bringing 1 or 2 Pig Picking cakes. If you don't know what it is, you can Google it.
I did and it looks and sounds awesome. Very unique.

OK! My res is in! I think she said #28, but in our chat she also pointed out that with group events like this, lots of folks auto-change their spots, depending on how the various vehicles and tents combine well. So we'll see.

And tomorrow (Sunday) we go to pick up our PUP! New toy! Yes!

Excellent!

John: have a safe trip home with the camper.

Rusty: cabin's do count as camping. You're going to spend far more time around a fire than you will "out of the elements" - so to speak.

Here's the latest tally:

Hi, Honey, I'm home!!!

Well, after lots of help and advice here and elsewhere, and some looking, we finally settled on one, and we just brought our new (to us) popup home this afternoon! It's a 2005 Flagstaff 176LST that we bought from the original owner at a very good price. They've kept it in good condition (garaged when not in use), and included a lot of extras like a full set of sidewalls and ground mats for the awning, a spare propane tank (full), and numerous gen purpose accessories they've accumulated. There's very little we have to do before use, but of course you have to mess around with a new toy, if only to really make it yours! It's small but not too small, which is what we wanted-- a bit more convenient than tent camping, but still camping.

Just have to wait for the daytime temps and humidity to come down a bit! We'll do a couple of local shakedowns, but Knott's Island will likely be the first big outing! Can't wait!!

Colin, I'll post some pics as soon as I can. I went through the process once with the seller, but it was hot and steamy and I didn't want to waste time on pics (or drip a lot of sweat all over my camera)!

The awning sets up in (what I presume to be) the standard fashion. The sidewall curtains comprise one continuous piece that attaches to the awning unit through three seperate zippers, one on each side. Not difficult, but ackward if alone, I would think. I'll be learning a lot over the next few weeks.

Hi,

My husband and I just found this club. We bought our E in March and just recently acquired a small pop-up camper to go with it. We have only used it once so far and would love to join the group for the Fall Camp '10 at Knotts Island in October. From the other posts I assume we make our own reservations and indicate we are part of the EOC. What else do we need to do? Also, is the campground dog friendly? We have two large dogs and would like to bring them if it is O.K.

Thanks for any info.

Welcome to the EOC, Jen-E, and congrats on your new E and the camper. It's great that your very first post is here in this thread. Can't wait to meet you!

Kudos on your handle with the capital E at the end. It's like you've been here for ages.

You are now on the list, so you have to come. We'll worry about names later.

Aside from making your reservation, there's not much left to do. As indicated in the previous posts, the dogs won't be a problem. In fact, Mel (dog drool) takes everybody's K9s into her trailer at night so she can stay warm. It's like having our own pound on-site.

Some have already picked what they want to cook for specific meals, but don't stress over that just yet. We usually have far too much food, so as the date draws near we'll hammer it out.

I look forward to meeting you both.

Welcome to the 'family', yes we do call and make our reservations on our own. We do let the campground know we're part of the EOC. Dogs are pretty much a part of our events, typically the campgrounds have pretty much routine rules regarding pets, we'll post all that info later on - or you can check their website.

Large dogs? What breed? pictures? There's a wide array of dog owners in the group - everything from pocket dogs on up...

Sam - Dogdrool's 'little one'

There's plenty more, take a look at the pictures from some of our past events, I'm sure you'll find a dog or twenty...

Of course you'll be there! Just follow Benny from Shelby, he'll show you the way.

Good idea, John. If anyone is interested, send me a pm maybe we can set up a 'caravan' to Knots Island. ;-)

Wow...seeing all the momentum build for this...I wish, I wish. Several days travel is a hard obstacle to get around with work and all the other general life stuff going on. (Note I did not say the actual driving was any problem...THAT I am willing to do anytime.)

Get Jojo to go and maybe I can talk myself into going just to say I traveled farther by the extra 30 miles from across town!

Wow what a warm welcome!! Thanks for all the kind comments. We made our reservation today and we look forward to meeting everyone.

Here is a picture of our dogs. Bella (the blond) is a labradoodle and Riley (red) is a retriever mix. They both love other dogs are are looking forward to meeting the canine part of the group.

We have a very basic 2005 Coleman Clipper camper. We do have air conditioning as we are originally from Florida and felt that was high on our "must have" list.

When the details are in place please let us know what we can bring for the camping trip. You sound like a great group!!

I have to sleep with a C-PAP machine but I'm not sure how to find the electricity to power the darn thing. Any suggestions?

John Gaquin

Chris, most of us will be in the area where each site has elec and water. my understanding is that the CG people have said we can put one additional tent in each space occupied by a smallish camper. the point is, you can pitch on a spot with some other Eple, where elec is available. Just bring an extension cord!!

You can do a search from the bar at the top of the page and it'll give you a ton of links, including this one (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65368&highlight=honda+suv+tent). I searched for "Honda SUV Tent". Hope this helps.

cello,

this is my first time camping at a campground w/ the EOC
questions:
Do we make our own food, or are the people being listed making food
for the whole group? If so, we should bring enough for 23-30 people?

Should we bring our own plates and silverware? i know i sound like a newbie, but I'm serious...hahahaa

What are some of the activities people do there? I like fishing, crabbing, and other water related stuff.

FEAR:
That the Ferry will sink w/ all our E's..

First of all... how could you say a thing like "Ferry Sink" (Just kidding of course) You know that if we can wash out our elements with a hose, we can drive across the water too.:razz::razz:(Just kidding here too)
As for first time camping and food, there has been discussion that there are so many people bringing enough food to feed an Army/Navy/Marines/Air Force crowd, :shock:But don't let that scare you, you can bring whatever you want for yourselves to eat, or extra. Guaranteed, you will be bringing some home with you. On plates and silver ware, yes you should have your own, but also there, there is always extras to share.

:evil::evil:NOW... seeing you have never camped before with some of the EOC Crowd, be prepared to not sleep much, it's party time with us.:evil:

Oh, welcome to the EOC camp out, we promise not to scare you off. (Too early)

For activities - check out the campground's website by clicking here (http://www.northlandingbeach.com/campingvirginiabeach/en/campground-information/recreation-amenities). Fishing and crabbing are both on the long list of things to do.

Bob (Spotman) & Benny (bh241) will be bringing Bolo which you'll see demonstrated by MaryBeth (Mrs. Spotman) and Bob below. It's quite addicting.

Worry not... let E-ple be your guides. What you may have forgotten, someone else will surely have or the store will have available. :-D

I will gather info from other posts and put one together, there seems to be enough people bringing something, it will be like a smorgasbord/buffet type right now. Anyone want to throw in suggestion, let it fly!

I will be there most likely late on Friday, the good part about that is I got the new job with the Federal Govt. (local). I start on Sept 27th. I just might drop it off on Thurs though.

Buffy, don't know your route of travel, probably up 95 to 58, but there is just a small local grocery store a few miles before the campground. You may want to map out a larger chain store on the way off 58 if you need to stock up. There is a Super Wal-Mart about 20 miles north of the campground though. (Right by my house)
Bring some warm clothes, we are known for a special motto here; "If you don't like the weather, just wait 10 minutes, it will change". Otherwise I always carry an electric blanket in the Teardrop.

Basics are available nearby & a Harris Teeter is just 6 miles away.

let's do get something going on a menu of sorts. If we don't we're gonna wind up with entirely too much food and it will be a horrible waste.

I would assume we should do something simular to the last time, have a couple or three go in together and take a 'meal' for the entire group. Not certain about the numbers but whatever it would be to make it fair for everyone.

Anyway we would need to cover the following:

Friday:
Supper

Saturday:
Breakfast:

Dinner - I would assume this would be a picnic at the Ferry Landing like we did last time? If so then we would need the basics - sandwich stuff, chips, drinks, etc. Also we would need the assorted paper products and drinks.

Supper:

Sunday:
Breakfast:

Other than these meals we would need 'incidentals' ~ camp munchies of you will.

I know we've had some volunteers for some meals / items but honestly I was too lazy to go back and look it up. So let's build this menu again.

Sunday: .
Breakfast: I'll be making antique waffles for the group Sunday morning. (No, the waffles aren't really antique, just the irons.) As on our trip last year, I'll try to start them a bit early so those needing to hit the road may still partake. Depends entirely on how chilly it is and how comfy my bed is. I have the dry mix all prepared, and I'll be shopping some time Saturday for eggs, butter and buttermilk. We'll also need about three bottles of regular syrup (y'know, Aunt Jemima or Log Cabin type), three bottles of real maple syrup, and the requisite heavy-duty paper plates and plastic cutlery. If someone wants to be responsible for that stuff, it would be great!

Other than these meals we would need 'incidentals' ~ camp munchies of you will.

Anyway, a query: 1) the list you posted today 10/3, show 4 e-ple less than the previous list. You're missing, of course. Gisele (2 e-ple) is missing from the 10/3 list, and erickang is showing 1 person rather than 2 on the previous list. Was this based on input you received, or just a typo? :?

...Colin, can't you even come and share in some food? part of the time?

Buffy, John and all: I'm going to do my best. Believe me. :-)

I love the tent pics, Buffy. Congrats on the great deal. I'm really glad it worked out for you.

John: Feel free to take the list, and thank you.
- gisele can't make it. She has family stuff going, but she sends her greetings.
- erickang, in looking at the previous posts, only indicated himself and his K9 unless I goofed again.

I wonder if the 'Motorcycle Group' is that wild and crazy Honda Element bunch...

I actuality had that problem somewhere in the past trying to set up a meet. I don't remember the specifics but they did think the 'Element' was a motorcycle...

Regardless we'll have a good time. less than two weeks to go....

I'll have a batch of chilli for Friday night - most likely I'll cook it on Thursday - freeze it and bring it - pretty much heat 'n eat at that point. Add some crackers and/or bread and it's a done deal. I'll try and get Laraine to make some of her cornbread - no guarantees though.

OK, here's what we have for food, so far:

FOOD AS OF 10/3/10

Friday: Supper Big Pot o’ Chili by bh241 (Benny)

Saturday: Breakfast: Eggs Benny, by dog drool (Mel)

Saturday: Dinner: (that’s the mid-day meal, for yankees)- homemade BBQ on the smoker & Slaw by Laceymack61 & Hogsqueal, (Courtenay & Denny)
NOTE to Courteney & Denny: Did you guys intend the bbq for mid-day or evening meal? Just want to get it straight. Reaperzune was also talking about delish fish & stuff, but he hasn't reserved yet.

Possible sandwich stuff, chips, drinks, etc, if we picnic. Also we would need the assorted paper products and drinks.

Saturday: Supper: undetermined as yet

Sunday: Breakfast: Waffles by John & Diane, cooked on non-safety compliant, dangerous, but shiny and beautiful antique cookers.

Incidentals ( camp munchies) : “low-cal” dessert, by Mel; choc chip cookies, by John; *****************************************
As you can see, there remains a bit of unsurety about a couple of things. Will be resolved in time, I'm sure!

According to the most current information, Spotman and Reaperzune are the only two of the committed who are not yet reserved.

Are you guys holding out for a better contract? :-D

I would figure on about 25 people and at least 6 to 10 dogs. :-)

I think the 'official list' has 20 people on it now, but it's best to have a tad lee-way on that, maybe a day-tripper or two pop in on us... one never knows...

Dog count - not sure that has even been tallied yet... :|

:shock:John, I wouldn't miss your delicious cookies and waffles! I am always a "Last minute hold-out" on every trip.8) Will be making them, reservations, this week,

I am attending a Police Academy for the next 9 weeks here, been very busy with that. I will be in probably late Friday, even though I live not too far from there.;-)

If there is anything that anyone misses or recommends, I will bring it, live around the corner of a Wal-Mart and Target. This is going to be a GREAT time had by all.

If I had the time like I did before getting this job, I would go kidnap Colin and drag his @$$ down there. Hey Colin, you gotta find a way, I might even have a tent to lend.

OK folks, here's what we appear to have so far for a menu: let me know if I've goofed somewhere, or overlooked someone's generous contribution!!

FOOD, KNOTTS ISLAND TRIP AS OF 10/5/10
It appears things are fairly covered. At least we won’t starve in the woods

Friday: Supper Big Pot o’ Chili by bh241 (Benny)
Saturday: Breakfast: Eggs Benny, by dog drool (Mel)
Saturday: Dinner: (that’s the mid-day meal, for yankees)- Cold cuts, cheese, and bread for picnic sandwich stuff, by 2009ELE (Chris & Nickey).

Also we need someone to chime in for the chips, drinks, etc, and assorted paper products for picnicking.

Saturday: Supper: homemade BBQ on the smoker & Slaw by Laceymack61 & Hogsqueal, (Courtenay & Denny)
Sunday: Breakfast: Antique Waffles by John & Diane, (john gaquin) [ cooked on dangerous, non-safety compliant, but shiny and beautiful antique cookers].

Also we need someone to kick in for syrup for the waffles – three regular and three pure maple syrup will cover the bases.

Ya'll make it sooooo hard NOT to be coming....

(if I skip out on the Gov't audit and show up there, don't tell them I'm in the US....We might need someone's yard to camp in for a while, until the extradition kicks in... ;)

John...I have to ask....what is 'regular' syrup????
isn't all syrup maple, or is that just a Canadian thing?

Must be a Canadian thing, 'cause you wear flannel shirts and work boots year 'round, and are all secretly lumberjacks at heart, right?

Of course, true afficionados would always select pure maple sugar syrup. But the "regular" pancake and waffle syrup most commonly found in supermarkets here is actually mostly cane syrup, with 1-2% pure maple syrup or even just maple flavoring added. I'm refering to the likes of Vermont Maid, Aunt Jemima, Log Cabin, etc. This product is about 1/3rd the cost of pure murple surple, has a slightly milder maple flavor, and the sweetness is not quite as intense. :|
