Hey people...I know we have been talking National Meet Summer 2005.....but there has been talk of doing something sooner and perhaps doing an East Coast Thing and a West Coast Thing.....well since I consider myself East Coast I have been thinking about turning this possible PA meet into an East Coast Meet....May 15th and 16th....Gettysburg, PA.....hotels, camping, winery, sites to see....it has it all.....so who is in?????

Are these meets geared for the young and single for purposes of partying 24/7 or are there all ages and types who come. Singles? Families? Are there planned activities or just a gather and hang out experience or what? (Even though I am of the Woodstock generation, I'm a newbie to gatherings based on owning the same vehicle :-)

Meets are for all ages.....and I myself am almost 30 with a husband of the same age....and for the record this past weekend (Mardi Gras) we went to dinner at Steak and Shake and made it a Blockbuster Nite.....not exactly what you would call Party Animals!!!

I think Gettysburg is a great idea.....so much to do (I grew up there so it is a great small town....and I think the E shock value will be great!!!)

I think an E Tour of the battlefields and perhaps a dinner outing will be as wild as it gets! Shopping and museums too.....hold on to your double chugger beer helmet!!! I am not saying we are going to eat dinner at 4pm and go to bed at 6pm.....but I don't think we will be out playing a drunk version of flashlight tag in the battle fields, but maybe I am wrong!!!

I also think a perfect photo op would be to fill up the circle at the center of downtown with Es.....and of course Devils Den and the like!

Once people have checked their calendars we should get a head count of those interested in Hotel and those in Camping.....I can make a few calls and try to get a group rate at one of the Hotels and do the same for one of the KOA Campground

I also can check and see if The Adams County Winery is still up and open for business....friends of the family used to own it, not sure if they still do. It really is a beautiful property. Also, outside of town is Mr. Eds....fun little place to buy homemade Candy and he has an Elephant Museum.....just some options!

I think I was the only person who had a beer (just one) at the DC meet. Mostly we hung out and gawked at the Empire-mobile (and some of the others' customizations). Plus, also, animatronic mr. washington.

Count me in as well. I have to change some schedules. I will try to attend both days but I will be there on Sunday for sure.

This will be my first meet as well. 49 years young here. My wife and my 11 year old will enjoy this i'm sure. My daughters will be at college studying I hope.

I will be waiting for a firm date so we all can make necessary plans. We could really have a large number of E's if all works well. Maybe break a meeting record.

Hey guys, have you meet on the weekend of May 21st - 23rd. We'll be holding a West Coast meet at that time... it'll be like we're having a national meet..... sorta. ;)

PEachMonstEr
03-04-2004, 01:25 PM
i agree with sheniferous, it would be great to have them both the same weekend. maybe a couple of the more techonologically inclined people can hook each of the events up via webcams or something like that, so we can see what each other is doing.

I've had my Element for two weeks and I love it!

All the time I'm thinking ROADTRIP !!! The last couple of years I've been wanting to go back to Gettysburg. I was there when I was in College, but I really didn't appreciate it much back then.

So this Meet would be perfect!

I think the reason we chose the weekend we did is due to scheduling conflicts... I know that I will be out of town that weekend and some people have already made travel arrangements.

PEachMonstEr
03-05-2004, 01:05 PM
unfortunetly :( , there will always be scheduling conflicts, especially with something on the scale of this. that is why favored the later weekend. if is only a matter of reservations, most places will probably be accomadating this far ahead in advance, its still three months away. db, hershey and gettysburg are relatively close. there's no reason both can't be done, maybe as a side trip or something. the chocolate world tour is fun :) and free :D. indian echo cavern is about an hour away too.

The weekend was chosen and every single person for 2.5 pages of this thread have said they can make the weekend of the 15/16th... don't start suggesting a different weekend now. If someone wanted to arrange a weekend, then they should have started their own thread before Diane made a suggestion.

She is going to be in the area for that weekend before heading back home to St. Louis. She has done some planning for this and even got the camp ground info. It would be completely unfair to take this away from her.

This is not how events should be put together. Not everyone will be happy with everything that is decided when it comes to planning large scale events. You have three choices in this matter:

1. Suck it up and attend without any problems.
2. Bow out gracefully and say the weekend is not good for you.
3. Plan the next event or help out with the next event.

Sorry for sounding sort of harsh here, but these types of events are not easy to plan, but are extremely easy for others to try and rearrange after the planning has begun.

Just my $0.02...

Diane, keep the date, everyone that says they can come have already started arranging their calendars for the dates you have chosen.

When a camp gound has been decided upon please post this information with pricing and the dates everyone needs to reserve by.

Thanks. :)

I thought I posted in this thread right after PEachMonstEr's last post, but somehow the post isn't there.

Anyway, my message was much like Larry's, only shorter.

Many of us have agreed on the earlier weekend, and have started to plan around it. Gettysburg was thought by all to be a great location for a meet, with campgrounds and lots of points of interest in the area (including good antiquing, my favorite).

So, mid-May in Gettysburg! Can't wait!!

i don't know what kind of behind the scenes conversations, if any, have gone on, but this what i can tell from the posts:
1) this started as a pa meet-up by civicway
2) stlouis first suggested may 14-24
3) civicway suggests may 24
4) briboy suggests a new weekend after 1 post, who supported the first date
5) stlouis decides to change the event (east coast meetup) and date (may 15-16) the post after that

briboy - by " 'we' chose the weekend 'we' did is due to scheduling conflicts" don't you mean you and stlouis

spdr - this is not the original post for this meet, civicway wanted to arrange a weekend and started the original thread...stlouis first suggested the 14-24...she took it away from civicway to start

spdr and foxtail - the 13 people who have confirmed the doesn't sound like alot for a such a big meet. there might be more people who are interested in the original weekend

stlouis - why can't you make it during a date that you originally suggested?

that's my 2 cents, and i too don't mean to be harsh. its just point counter-point

Ummmm Okay.....first I didn;t take anything away from civicway.....in fact i simply suggested an East Coast meet, civicway was talking about a PA Meet.

Now many of the people that are coming for the 15th and 16th are from outside of PA. I am in for the 15th and 16th as I suggested, as I will be back in St. Louis the following weekend. And people wonder why we can't get a national meet together? I think we have our answer.

My suggestion.....come one, come all to the 15th and 16th in Gettysburg.....then the following weekend PA people can meet up whenever and whereever they like.

I will be in Gettysburg the 15th and 16th and would love to meet up with my E buddies :)

Hi All,
Lets just have a good time and not forget why we are meeting. I changed my schedule from the original 5/24 to 5/16 and 5/17. I thought it would be great to have other owners come visit PA. Its a long summer and for those who can not make this weekend, we simply will meet again in late summer. I appreciate the work StLouisPenquin has put into the meet. This meet thing is new to me. I am sure we all will have questions as May draws near Lets keep things on track for the meet.

Just think how many more new Element owners there will be by May. The numbers wishing to attend may continue to increase.

If you are about 20 miles from Gettysburg, is it possible that you could scout out a meeting place for us to meet in May. Somewhere that we can park what appears to be 15 to 20 Elements. We need a common meet area as everyone gets into town.

Ummmmm.....I was thinking we could all meet at the Gettysburg Battlefield National Park Visitors Center....huge parking lot, good locale for those who haven't been to Gettysburg before...they could get there before the meet time and pick up maps and tour the visitors ceneter..........but if there is a better idea please chime in!

I have been SUPER busy lately.....between work and getting ready for a possible move to the East Coast I am been swamped. Things should lighten up a bit for me after this weekend (my husband's birthday) then I will be able to make some phone calls and find out if I can get us some discount rates on campground fees and hotel rooms.

As soon as I have some info I will post.....we are a little over 2 months away from our East Coast Meet!!!! WoooHoooo!!!!

Also....Grant and I will be driving from St. Louis to Gettysburg on Friday May 14th......so if anyone is driving in on Friday and wants to meet up and start a caravan on the way to Gettysburg let us know!!

Visitor center sounds good to me. It has been a while since I have been there. I could not remember if there was a large area around town for us to meet. Turn out seems great, hopefully more will join us in PA.

jaco
03-13-2004, 09:04 PM
I'd like to make a minor correction, it's 29 miles :D

Anyway, the idea of the visitors center is probably the best bet. Though it's not at all level terrain. Directly next door is the cyclorama parking lot, which is probably better suited for photos and the always needed "everyone line up and open your doors" shot. Outside of those two lots, nothing (at least in the national park) is large enough. We also may end up running into the problem of not all being able to fit into the same lot and ending up in the overflow. If it's a nice weekend this is very possible.

I spoke to a park ranger and a nice lady at the visitors desk about a good local and they seemed to think the rec area around the cemetary was good. It turns out though this is only open to vehicles in the summer.

I have to admit, I'm looking forward to taking the motor tour of the park with all the others. It'll be an element convoy, sure to turn some heads.

I'll head up again on one of the next few weekends and see if any of the minor parking areas will be a good fit. I was a bit disappointed that the devels den area only has about 8 spaces.

I'll keep you posted.

It's funny that you are asking about this. When i was driving up there on saturday (29 miles from the east) i tried to keep an eye out for flea market and antuque type places, mainly because it was mentioned in this thread. I have to say that the stretch of road starting at about 15 miles outside of gettysburg was jam packed with this type of store/barn/area. Please keep in mind that I have no idea what so ever of the quality of these places, so please don't hold it against me if they're not super-happy-fun places to shop. Perhaps the next time i head up i can get an actual count, that way i can prove it's not just my imagination.

foxtail
03-16-2004, 10:27 AM
It's true- that area is packed with antique/flea places, ranging from the junky to the fancy. I like to drive east on Rt 30 from I-81 (coming towards Gettysburg from the west). There is a huge antique mall (4 buildings) at Fayetteville, which is (correct me if I'm wrong, Jaco!) less than a half hour from Gettysburg. Then there are other places between Fayetteville and Gettysburg, plus there are places in Gettysburg itself.

And, as Jaco has reported, there are more places to the east of Gettysburg.

To the person on this thread who thinks we stole the idea ( i wont mention any names)... The idea actually came from Diane and I carrying on a conversation on night... nothing about stealing a pa meet or anything we just knew both of us were up for camping that weekend and it decided to evolve. We didnt mean to step on anyones toes but like was said earlier if you cant make the date just plan for the next one...

There is also a Holiday Inn right next to the Tour Bus Company and the Jenny Wade house. It used to be really nice.....but the last time I stayed there was 17 years ago.....heehee.

I promise that I will start calling the campsites next week.....this week was incredibly hectic as I had an executive visit.....and next wednesday I am flying to NJ for the final interview (cross your fingers) But I am off next Friday and will be able to make some calls! Who knows....by the time the meet rolls along I may be just driving down from NJ!!!

Altland House (http://www.altlandhouse.com)
Gettysburg Hotel (http://www.hotelgettysburg.com)
Blue Sky Motel (http://www.blueskymotel.com)
Best Inn (http://www.gettysburgbestinn.com)

I stayed at the Altland House a year or so ago, and it was delightful. I'd forgotten the name till I saw it on your list. It's an old building that has been thoroughly renovated- the guest rooms were lovely. As I recall, the room was about $90-100, but it was a huge room and very nice. The food in the pub was very good also.

Chance, is about 16 months old, he's a good boy (most of the time :roll: ) he likes other dogs a lot but sometimes is a bit shy, He is a Pit/Lab mix so he looks and acts just like a Lab but is a little smaller (roughly around 45-50 lbs) and you can see the pit when he smiles. But I don't think we'll have a problem. When introducing him to other dogs I keep a tight hold on his collar because he maybe small but likes to act big. Darn Alpha male complex :shock:

Actually, from what I read a couple of weeks ago, they are supposed to be on time this year, which means they're starting to bloom now!

http://www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org/cms/index.php?id=390

The locally planted (in arlington, not part of the groves from japan at the tidal basin in dc) seem to be blooming already.

Any ideas on Gettysburg agenda, i.e., what time will we meet up? I am planning to drive up from Virginia Saturday morning (assuming that we'll meet later in the day), spend Saturday night, and head home on Sunday.

So, what are you guys planning? Something similar? If the plans are to meet earlier on Saturday, I'll have to adjust my schedule (and hotel reservations).

Kristi

StLouisPenguin
03-26-2004, 03:06 PM
Kristi...

That sounds like the plan......Our plan is kinda contingent on if I get this job in NJ or not.....if I don;t get the job Grant and I will drive straight from St. Louis to Gettysburg Friday and stay Friday night in a hotel.....that way we can meet up whatever time needed....but if I am relocated to NJ Grant will fly to NJ and we will drive down early Saturday morning.

I hadn't set a time or "agenda" as of yet....we discussed meeting at the Battlefield Visitors center.....it is convient and if people haven't been to Gettysburg before would be a great time to visit the Visitors Center before or after the meet.....then I figured we could all tour the battlefield and take pics for EOC.....and then maybe grab a late lunch or early dinner for those interested, then perhaps some antiquing or sightseeing.....or whatever anyone wanted to go off and do....I know a group of us will be camping....so we would need to set up camp and get things settled......We can firm up details as the date gets closer....I also thought it might be neat for those interested to go to dinner or something :) Above all this should be a relaxing weekend full of doing what you truly want to do and seeing a whole bunch of Es!!!!

And don;t forget people Hersey is not that far away for those who want a little amusement!

foxtail
03-26-2004, 03:36 PM
That works for me. Since I wrote earlier, I found out that Jake has a fire dept function that weekend, so he's not coming. Since he can't make it, I'm going to bring my mom along...so camping is out. I've made a reservation at the Altland House for Saturday night. We're probably going to drive up on Friday, maybe go gambling at Charlestown, then spend the night either there or around Martinsburg (both in WVa). That's only about an hour or so from Gettysburg, so we can be there whenever everyone decides. We'll antique our way over from I-81.

Can't wait to see everyone! Won't it be cool to see all those E's together. Gosh, I'm really going to have to clean mine up or it will be embarassing! :)

Okay I conferenced with a few fellow EOCers in a chat room about possible campgrounds.....and in the end we decided to camp at

http://www.gettysburgcampground.com/index.html

They offer a wide variety of RV, Camper, and Tent Sites....and have a pool, mini golf, shuffle board, general store, etc. Plus the biggest ammenity is their lower rates compared to some of the other campgrounds.

Also.....at each site you can have 2 vechicles and either 2 tents or 1 tent and 1 RV/Camper......so if you are smart you will buddy up!!! Also each sites rental allows for 2 adults and 2 children.....each additional adult is only $3....max # adults per site is 8.......so be smart and buddy up save some bucks!

I called today to try to make reservations and let them know that we will be part of a group and to put us all together if at all possible.....but they are still closed for the season until Friday April 2nd.....so that will have to wait until then!

If anyone else is in for sure on camping let me know by Friday....so when I call I can get our campsites all together. (that is of course if you want to camp with the group!)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~
Now.....on to Hotel Stuff.....I know Kristi already has reservations, but for the others seeking Hotel Accomidations, do you all want to stay at the same hotel? If so, what Hotel? Do you want me to make some calls? Do you all want to fly solo on this or what? Please Advise, as I am planning on camping and do not know what hotel everyone is interested in.
I called the camp ground today http://www.gettysburgcampground.com/index.html
and talk ot the lady about reservations, to make reservation you need to be staying at least 2 days they do not do one day reservations. there is a specific tent area, which has 20 tent spaces, which has fire pits, and picnic tables. I did give her the group name of Elemnt owners club, but there is no group rates avalible. Only youth rates for scouts and such. the web site is very helpful and the cost for the tent site is 24.20 for 2 adults and 2 childern and you need to put a one night deposit down with either a visa or MC. yes the camp site is pet freindly I took this right off the rules fromt he web site
PETS:
Must be kept leashed at all times and are not permitted in store, bathhouse, game room, pool or playground area. CLEAN UP after your pet and respect others by keeping your pet controlled and QUITE. Do not leave pets unattended.
IF A NEIGHBOR'S PET IS DISTURBING YOU PLEASE REPORT IT TO THE OFFICE!
I think that is about as reasonable as any campsite that I have been to .. I am also bring my pup chance with me so I would of suggested somewhere else if he wasn't allowed
hope this helps
Don't know anything about either one of these places. I had just done an on-line search for some place to get the bugs scrubbed off after the drive to G'burg when I saw your post. Assuming it's not raining, there may be a flock of E's at the Gettysburg car washes on Saturday morning.
I posted flyers at my Honda dealer today concerning our meet up in Gettysburg. It is an attempt to pull some large numbers for our meet. No matter how many E's attend it is sure to be a great weekend.
This evening an H-2 Hummer waved and blinked its lights as I was pulling onto the highway. I came up beside him at the traffic light and he checked out the E and waved as we went seperate directions. No I did not pull in front of him to get his attention. He waved first at little brother.
So what do you do at a meet? just stand around and talk about how much you love your E and then go home? Or is it like an all day picnic/BBQ kind of thing? I live outside Philly and may be able to come, just wondering what you folks do and stuff :)
I'm looking for a demo on removing the rear seats, visiting the Gettysburg battlefield, maybe doing the Scenic Valley Tour. My wife is interested in some "antiquing". Oh, yeah...and find out who some of these other EOC members are.
I want to see a bunch of E's in one place. I think that will be really fun. I also want to put some faces with names (maybe I should try and make some E-nametags?). I also plan to antique in the area and see the battlefield. In that order, I think.
Well it depends on what you want to do at the meet. At one of the last DC/No. VA meets we chit chatted about problems, stories or DIY installation stories over a lunch and then took a short trip to a local historical site to use it as a backdrop for a group photo. We also did a little show tell with who had what accessory and what was worth having. It was all pretty laid back but still a blast. I doubt we'll sit around and talk about how much we like the vehicle. We are meeting for that very reason so it's already understood :D It's mostly a "face to face/hands on" with what goes on here in the forum.
I called the Gettysburg Tour Center to get information on a audio bus tour on a double decker bus (weather permitting). If weather is rainy an enclosed bus would be used. The tour is a 23 mile tour of the battlefield. The tour company is within walking distance of the tourist center according to the tour people. There is a tour leaving at 2:30 pm, The non group rate per adult is 19.95. Groups of over 10 are given a group rate. The person on the phone was unsure if we could just show up and get the group rate without an advanced booking. She did not disclose group rate either. This would be a nice activity. If everyone arrives around noon, we could introduce ourselves to one another and chat a while until the 2;30 bus tour. During the tour we could scout areas for picture opportunities. This is just one idea in the planning of the afternoon. The tour center phone number is 717-334-6296. How does everyone feel about this activity? I was on this tour many years ago and it was real informative.
It's car enthusiast season! On the way down to NYC this afternoon passed a gathering of Subaru WRX owners in Danbury...must have been about 25 of them, then a little farther along, about a dozen Dodge Vipers breezed by. One had a video camera mounted on the driver's side filming their progress. Seeing a procession of the same make/model vehicles really has some impact.
foxtail
05-01-2004, 11:07 PM
Thanks for doing the scouting about the tours, but my preference would be to do the get together, pics, and drive around (or whatever we do of that ilk) before anything like tours. I doubt that that the tour is something that I'll want to do, and there may be others just coming in for the E-grouping as well.
I can't take that extra day next Saturday to hang and meet everyone... it will be my ONLY day in a month to actually be home and get things done around the house... :(
Hopefully there will be a few events planned during the summer in and around NY/Long Island...
DustE,
Thanks for the kind words! :D
The web page background is actually part of .mac, requiring a $99 annual subscription. While that's not a trivial amount of scratch, my experience is that the benefits (including various software and storage) provide an adequate ROI for me...your mileage may vary. [Like a vehicle we all know and love.] If you wanted to create a similar page for hosting elsewhere, it wouldn't be too hard to do (easy for me to say 8) ).
I created the E-Tunnel movie in iMovie, importing the stills from iPhoto (really easy in iLife '04) and then using the Cross Dissolve transition. Let me know if you have any other questions.
It was absolutely hysterical watching the faces of the onlookers as we drove through the battlefield! I think we got more attention than the monuments.
I trust your bears all made it across the border ok.
Actually I was worried more about that new set of bumper balls making it across the border. :lol:
Are they still swingin'?
Nice shots! Was great to meet ya. Thanks for taking time off from your "lake a day" program. (Let's see, 10000 lakes divided by 365 days...and then there are leap years...!) :wink:
It was great seeing colin's boat too, if only in pictures. Oh, and colin too!
Now, I'm wondering if the same aliens that absconded with Diane also picked up Brian and Dea on the way home as well...
Where are they? Any clues? I've been too busy with work and a friend's dad's funeral, or I'd have done some more "research" myself. I'm just paranoid about Dea posting the "This is what Colin looks like in the a.m." shot than most anything else! Thankfully we haven't seen that one yet!! :lol:
And my boat -- what can I say, except that if you've ever seen it, you'll never forget it; and, I couldn't make up anything more absurd than it actually is! Right?
I think I'll call brian and see. I know they were going to do field work when they got home sunday...perhaps that was a multi-day thing.
For some reason, I've got "In the Navy" playing in my head. Argh! :)
On a similar theme, I think I showed either Chris or maybe Colin* the dancing stick people animation on the empeg. One of them does the YMCA dance! :shock:
Brendan has a custom animated digital display on one of his stereo units.
At startup it displays a side view of an Element which goes across the screen to turn facing you then "Honda Element" scrolls across the background.
Brendan can tell you more about it.
Very cool.........maybe not as a kick-ass cool as my Vader Breath Box but still cool. :twisted:
Yeah, my empeg/riocar is an in-dash DIN-sized hard-drive based MP3 player. I runs linux, so when the linux kernel boots when you turn the ignition, it entertains you for about 10 seconds with the boot animation. You can replace the default Rio-waving-penguin with animated GIFs of a certain size/shape/color-depth/number of frames.
I sent the Honda Element "Megablocks" commercial to a guy at Adobe, and he extracted some frames from the video, cooked them down to the right format, and made a short 25-30 frame animation out of it. Now, it looks like the empeg came with my E. :) :) :)
I am looking forward to seeing the rolling footage from around the horseshoe in front of Boyds Bears. All the pics are great.
Would anyone be interested in a Fall meet in late September or early October? If so, where would be a great place to have such a meet? Any ideas.
i'm thinking it would be great to have a meeting up in Toronto near the CN Tower, i'm sure we could get some great pictures from the top of the tallest free-standing tower in the world of a bunch of Es, sure they may look like little E-ant's marching around the city, but thats the fun part..any other suggestions to where it should be :?:
Oh it still has a few tricks left on/in it I just wanted a little change from how it's been for almost a year now.
But no the Vader Breath Box is just that, I custom made a push button FX box that when activated has my engine bay huffing and puffing like the ol' Dark Lord of the Sith himself. It uses a Radio Shack 20 second recorder module connected to a small audio amplifier. I had to custom design the activator unit myself though.
*Special thanks given to hurleybt for pointing me in the right direction for the parts needed.
Ahhhhh...I would suspect that may turn a few heads when you come to a stop light and push the "play" button!!
I really wish I cold have attended.
I got stuck driving around MD shopping.
It was for my wife's college graduation party. The shopping sucked, but the graduation and the party kicked butt.
Hopefully we can have another one sometime soon. I really want to have an EOC meet that I can attend.
I guess I should start planning for the EOC natl meet
Neither Diane *NO* Brian&Dea!
I'm afraid the UFO-guys may have taken a liking to the E... :(
Seriously though, I left voice mail with Brian on tuesday, but haven't heard back.
And Brian had left Diane voice mail all last weekend...
