: 2003 with 65K gets 21 mpg.
rydbyk 12-04-2010, 05:49 PM I just purchased the above mentioned E. Does this sound right? I drive very conservatively and I am doing about 70% freeway.
Anything on the vehicle that I can change or tune to get better mpg??
MikeQBF 12-04-2010, 06:07 PM Depends on how fast is OK while calling yourself "conservative". If you're holding a steady 70 to 75 with occasional creeping up to 80, you're going to get 21-22.

Yeh..steady 70 on freeway. Also, I rarely ever "step on it". 70% freeway at steady 70 mph = only 21 mpgs? Ouch!
I just put 225/70/16 BFG AT KOs on and now it is at 18mpg.
Just added Ecamper and Thule roof rack and I am afraid of what is going to happen in the realm of mpgs:roll:
Burn619 12-05-2010, 01:11 PM 21 sounds about right to me. You're driving it right too, slow and steady. I have an 04 AWD and I average 21 on my freeway trips. 16-18 for my daily stuff. I added the Injen CAI and exhaust hoping that it would improve but didn't really notice a difference. From the other threads I've read I don't thing there's much you can do to improve this.
sloweddie 12-06-2010, 08:46 AM I got 24 mpg running at 80 (verified by GPS) with the cruise on from Phoenix to Kalispell MT and back. Includes Kalispell to Missoula around 60 and a stint from Rt 15 in Utah to Flagstaff where I got back on interstate. I have said this before; everyone is convinced that they drive gently but they don't. If you never have cars backing up behind you on entrance ramps you are not driving as economically as you could be. I don't mean being an obstruction on the road, I'm talking about hitting merge speed at the point of merging, not halfway down the ramp like most everyone else does. Getting up to speed uses as much fuel as pushing the E thru the air. Most people floor it from red lite to red lite (at least they did in Northern VA where I used to live, there are fewer lites in PHX) and waste gas. Drive as tho you had a raw egg under your foot on the gas pedal.

ramblerdan 12-06-2010, 09:30 AM Published EPA fuel-economy estimates for a 2003 EX AT 4WD are 22 city / 24 highway. Given that a) EPA estimates were a bit optimistic in '03 (they were later changed downward across the board), b) the highway figure probably assumes 55 mph, and c) at 7 years and 65K the car isn't likely getting its best-ever mileage, 21 mpg should come as no surprise.

I'm glad to read that..... I filled my 07 AWD last night upon learning gas was going to jump, and my calculations put it at a lovely 18.519mpg! Thinking about it though, I have been doing a lot of town driving and rarely finding opportunities for going over 55mph, so I suppose it is what it is.
Bowzer 12-06-2010, 06:11 PM My biggest recent change in mpg has been favorable: pushed from 19-21 up to 23-26 the last 2 months.
- Drive 60-70 mph vs 70-75; freeway commuter traffic most of the time
- Tires (upsized to 235/70's) now have 10k on them and may be providing a little less resistance (General Tire Grabbers HTS)
- Use the AC maybe 20% of the time with favorable weather right now
- Maintain use of Chevron, Shell, or Exxon (preference in that order) for 87 octane fuel
In other words, you're about right. Get lighter on the right pedal and you may see another 2-4 mpg creep in.
Geo100 12-06-2010, 06:31 PM OK, Ill try to make this short. I have a 2010 that I use for work and travel 200 mi per day and average 22-23 (85% freeway 10%hwy 5%city)
Wish it was better, but I'm OK with that.
Last July I had to go to So Cal/Az and on the way back I picked to travel north from Reno to Bend Or on hwy 395. But my map quest said I should travel hwy139 which has a quick climb then travels on this flat ridge for more than 300-350mi, So that is how I went.
It was 11:00pm and I topped off in Susanville and headed up the climb. Once I got on top of the ridge it was a narrow 2 lane road, my phone had no reception, there was blood spots from dear hits, no one but me on this road, and deer were @ the edge wanting to run out in front of my new E.
I chose to drive @ 40-45 mph for over 300 (frikkin) mi & I was totally stressed out. 5 hrs later I pulled into Bend to refuel knowing I did good. After calculating fuel mileage I got 37.8, Yes thats right 37.8 It was nice but I cant drive 40mph
GEO
I should add, I recently put 225/75/16s on. Prior to that my everyday mileage was 23-25+
spdrcr5 12-06-2010, 10:21 PM Long Island to NC I averaged 22-23 at a solid 75mph. 2003 with 146,000+
Just for reference.
usafe7ret 12-09-2010, 03:07 PM I found that after I had the differential fluid replaced on my 03, my mileage improved dramatically from what it usually was around town.
Best I ever did was 25 mpg on the highway between St Louie and K.C.
It has 72,xxx miles on it now.

I believe cars are most efficient running at 45mph.

Sounds about right, about all you can tune is your feet and your expectations.
