: To Lift or not to Lift?
nas660 12-25-2010, 10:19 PM I know there is info out there, but I have had a hard time locating it latley, even in a search? Plus maybe a condensed Pros and Cons thread would be nice?
My E has 235 70 16 Geolanders, and I use her on the beach quit a bit. I air down to 10lbs and she doesn't even think about getting stuck. However, I bottom out a lot. Some say its only sand, others say, yikes :-o !
I would like to do the lift kit this spring but the reviews seem mixed?
Please don't tell me to buy a jeep, been there done that I love my E, I love making it unique, its paid for, and its a Honda!!!!!
scorsone 12-25-2010, 11:00 PM from what I have read the Sparman lift is the easiest on the CV joints. Search for that lift to find out more details. It means a little more leg work on finding parts for the lift but it may last longer. The CCM lift seems to be too tall and causing some serious CV joint shudders and failures.
Some day I would like to give my E a little lift but I don't think I will ever get around to it.:-(
nas660 12-29-2010, 12:03 PM Not that I want cv issues! But is there any other problems caused by the CCM lift? If it's just that I might consider rolling the dice. I just don't want to be replacing the whole front end?
scorsone 12-29-2010, 10:05 PM If you are going to roll the dice, look up the "Sparman Lift" on the site here. That lift is just a 1.5" lift and seems to be much easier on the CV joints from what I have read on here. That is the lift I would go with if I ever get around to it.
spdrcr5 12-29-2010, 10:51 PM Here's the thread on the Sparman Lift (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27431).
//me drools after reading the sparman thread
leftfield6 01-12-2011, 08:49 PM Okay, in all honesty, even if I did prefer the shorter "Sparman" lift, the prospect of tracking down all of the various parts and then doing the fabricating just isn't going to happen. I know my limits, and suspension work is not my favorite.
So, what is the real world failure rate of the CCM lift? How many people have had issues with CVs, and what does CCM recommend? I wouldn't mind the ground clearance, but don't want to be swapping out CVs every 1000 miles.
BigTzElement 01-13-2011, 05:17 AM I've thought about doing the CCM lift on my wife's E but I don't want CV joint or shudder problems either.
The thought has crossed my mind in going with the CCM lift and a set of coilovers to adjust the lift height more in the range of the sparman lift.
Thoughts?!?!?
scorsone 01-13-2011, 06:49 AM I thought about that too but coilovers will not have the range of suspension travel that stock has to my knowledge and could be a stiffer but lifted ride which wouldn't be good for off road situations.
Someone with coilover expertise please correct me if I am wrong.
orangejuice 02-15-2011, 06:00 PM Are these just fears about the CV joints or does anyone have any real reviews to reference that state CV wear with the lift. I spoke with CCM and they said that this would not be a problem but... they sell the unit. I agree the sparman option seems like to much fiddling around.
scorsone 02-15-2011, 06:47 PM OJ, look around on the EOC about the CCM lift. Several members that have installed this product have written about their CV issues after the lift.
orangejuice 02-17-2011, 06:26 PM I have looked and can find nothing that mentions CV wear. Can you direct.
Btw I have not lifted my Element and I have 235 x16 x70 Geo's with no problem. Can the tire size go up anymore with the lift?
paulj 02-17-2011, 08:30 PM A lift just puts spacers at the top of the strut tower, it does not change the strut tower or its shape. Do you recall why you can't put larger tires on the car as it is? Where is clearance tight?
helcaraxe 02-19-2011, 08:54 PM The only way a lift would allow larger tires than stock-height-suspension would normally allow is with wheel spacers so they clear the strut towers. Otherwise you're just putting extra space in the wheel well. I do love the way the E looks lifted though.
I am very interested in the CCM lift too, but I have heard horror stories about drivetrain 'shudder' and failing CV joints. Everyone who has ever lifted their E should post about wear and tear a year or two in now and give us all an idea of what we should expect should we go this route.
Avis VanRental 03-04-2011, 05:46 PM I am thinking about the Sparman lift this spring (My warranty's up in a week or two anyway) plus some 230/75's. After that, I'm thinking that gutting the factory underbody protection bars in exchange for some rock panels, plus an aftermarket exhaust should buy another inch or three of ground clearance. I've read some threads around here about this, although I'll be darned if I can remember where, now. I recall with panels and exhaust, your gas tank is essentially your lowest point, though.
45stang 03-09-2011, 11:43 AM hey man i love that picture! the E really looks great on the beach!!!!
