: 255/45/18 or 255/40/20 on an SC?
snoco1 03-23-2011, 12:47 PM So I've searched and searched. Used the search function over and over. Can't fine anything on if people have tried this size. I've found people that have used them on a non SC element, but only found one thread with them on an SC and it wasn't 100% sure.
So of course I'm posting this question. Has anyone found out if 255 width tires will fit on an SC that is not lowered/bone stock?
I'm tossing up sticking with 18's on my SC or going to 20's. Not sure if I can justify the extra weight and cost to go to 20's
I see the 20's as extra unsprung weight and something that will use brakes and gas faster. I plan to autocross my SC a bit. So I'm thinking that performance wise the 18's might be a better option to go with. But man the 20's do look to fill the wheel wells a little better than the 18's
I'm going to keep the stock 18's for winter tires and buy new black 18's for everything else.
Thanks in advance guys,
And sorry for the same old questions of will these fit. I have looked for the past month to find info and either it's me not using the search function properly or there just isn't that much info out there.
Rob Dobbs 03-23-2011, 09:37 PM FYI, my SC wheels weighed more than the 20"s that replaced them. I too wanted to go with 255's but played it safe with 245's. The main reason is my E is also my work vehicle. I didnt want to get 4 people in it with some gear and start rubbing. It seems like the 255/40/20 would fit with no problem but it just wasnt worth the $600 chance to me.
You could have the fender lips rolled.

I can help you, but I need way more info than you are giving. If you do the
right rim width and right offset, you can run 255s easy on the SC. There is
more than one E or SC that has 275s in the rear. The clearance is there if
you do it right.
So just to give you a quick idea, 255/45 R18s are shorter than the OEM
225/55 R18 tires. If get the right offset with the right rim and you dont
lower your E, you will be just fine. You can even run 255/50 R18s and not
rub.
As for the other tire, the 255/40 R20 is almost the same exact height as
the OEM tire. Once again, if you run the correct rim, with the right width
and offset, you will have NO issues!!!
So basically, I need to know what rims you are looking at, what size they
are, what width, as well as what offset. We can go from there.
Ask Rob Dobbs, I know what I am talking about!!!
Rob Dobbs 03-24-2011, 03:30 AM The man knows his stuff. Backspacing and all that math is confusing.
Im running:
Rim size, 20"x8.5" 5-lug (5x114.3) +45mm offset
Tires, Hankook Ventus V12 Evo in 245-40-20
This took only one inch off the sidewall compared to the stock tire size and oddly enough, comes in 1/10th of an inch shorter that the factory wheel and tire! This means my speedo is off 1/10th of a mph.
As far as added up cost to 20" wheels, if your patient and hunt for used wheels on craigslist, there are some amazing deals to be had. My wheels cost $280 used private party. Thats about half the price of one wheel when they were new! Damn things rides like its on rails now 8)

I know you know what you're talking about. I've been lurking on here and reading many posts. I've seen your name many times and always like the info you give. So here's the rest of the info....
May lower the vehicle slightly later at some point, thinking of doing a coilover setup so it will be adjustable. But have a feeling by the time I do that I'll be in the need of new tires anyways.
So for rims I'm looking at these few, I have also thought about just doing a 245/45 size on the 18's. The recommended 245/50 don't leave me with many options for tires. As of now I'm sold on the Continental Extreme Contact DWS

The rims will either be.....
18x8 or 18x7.5

Backspacing: 6.25"

AztecRol 03-24-2011, 06:12 PM Any of those rims will fit with no issues at all.
Here are the specs for the two 18 X 8 +45 rims with 245/45 R18 tires:
When speedometer reads 60mph (96.6km/h) actual speed will be 57.6mph (92.7km/h): 4% slower.
Package is 10 mm (0.4'') closer to suspension/brakes components. Acceptable for most cars.
Package will stick out 10 mm (0.4'') farther. Acceptable for most cars.
Wheelwells - 100% clear (leaves even more room than OEM).
If you go with the above rims and with 255/45 R 18 tires, just add 5mm to each side of the tire.
When speedometer reads 60mph (96.6km/h) actual speed will be 58.5mph (94.2km/h): 2.5% slower.
Here are the specs for the 18 X 7.5 +45 rims with 245/45 R18 tires:
Same as the 18 X 8 +45 except the tires will bubble just a hair on the sidewalls.
Here are the specs for the 18 X 8 +40 rims with 245/45 R18 tires:
Package is 5 mm (0.2'') closer to suspension/brakes components. Acceptable for most cars.
Package will stick out 15 mm (0.6'') farther. Acceptable for most cars.
Wheelwells - 100% clear (leaves even more room than OEM).
If you go with 255/45 R18 tires, just add 5mm to each side.
Just an FYI, I found the Continental Extreme Contact DWS in both sizes:
245/45R18 ( 677x245, 26.7x9.6 ) 96Y at $200.33 each
255/45R18 ( 687x255, 27.0x10.0 ) 103Y $235.30 each
I have to say that you are correct, I just give the proper tire size, that
doesnt mean that the tire size is a popular one, or if it even exists. I tell
you what is correct and what will work, if you have to adjust a bit, the
specs I give out will be your starting point.
If you can find the 255/45 R18s for a price that is close to the 245s, get
them, they are closer to the OEM size, yet still smaller than OEM.
snoco1 03-24-2011, 06:26 PM Any of those rims will fit with no issues at all.
WOW,
Thanks for all the info. I looked at a tire calculation before. And it gave me the overall diameter and percentage of speed reading change. But I couldn't get the width clearances anywhere. Thank you so much for that!
One more question, do you know if there is a substantial change in mpg's with a 255 compared to the 225? I know on my truck when I went to larger heavier tires there was no noticeable change. But am not sure on a lighter vehicle that doesn't have quite the HP my truck does.
I'm not worried about mpg to much. Just curious if anyone has noticed.
And again. Thanks!
