: Death Valley 2012
Miss Ellie & Co. 08-31-2011, 09:32 PM 6th Annual ~ Death Valley National Park ~ Camping Binge
February 18 - 21
This year we'll be holding this amazing meet on the 3 day President's Day week-end.
Most working peeps will have the following Monday off to allow an extra day of immersing themselves in this fabulous National Park.
Because we're schedualing the meet on a Holiday Week End we need to reserve campsites as fast as we can.
Campground:
Death Valley National Park www.nps.gov/deva/index.htm (http://www.nps.gov/deva/index.htm)
Furnace Creek Campground - Two vehicles and 8 peeps per site.
Park at your campsite, fire pit and picnic table included.
Link to Furnace Creek Campground Map: http://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/camping.htm
Preference campsites 135 -117 (most all of the sites with shade have been taken)
Reservations:
Recreation.Gov (calling works best) 877- 444 - 6777
PLEASE RESERVE YOUR CAMPSITE NOW!
motelE 08-31-2011, 10:17 PM Oh Gene, there I was all full of myself 8). Unable to make the summer Camping Fools E'vent. But I knew I was going to Death Valley. So I jumped on making my reservations 6 MONTHS IN ADVANCE . I was just so tickled, had space #90 locked in and what do I find out, wrong weekend...... rats, rats, rats. So I'm calling in the morning to fix my reservation date. WHO KNEW the weekend would change. No big deal, I'll be happy to see everyone in Death Valley. And I should be able to make Lake Cachuma, maybe just for Sat & Sun, meet everyone for breakfast. So see you there.

Carol,
So sorry about that.
We've got EOC peeps coming in from out of state and also thought it would be a nice idea for folks to be able to squeeze out an extra day
by schedualing it on the President's Day Week End.
Only problem is the campground is currently half full and most all of the shaded campsites have been taken.
Campsites that are (at the moment anyway) available and "side by each" are site # 135 -117. We just booked #130.
It's a wee bit of a bummer, the forementioned campsites are all on the front row of the campground and will require EZ-UPs as they are without shade.
But this crew has EZ UPs up the wazoo.
Looking forward to seeing you at Cachuma Lake!
motelE 09-01-2011, 11:00 AM :-D I now have reservations for space #132. Yes looks like it's going to be pretty sunny. And we'll need to be prepared for high winds with the EZE ups & tarps. But we will have loads of fun what ever happens.
OK, I have site 128, what an incredible view ! I'm going to be front row for some great Sunrises. I think this is the year I get serious about Star Gazing.

Dog Owned 09-02-2011, 12:34 PM Ok, John and I are going. We're on the fence about whether to bring the teardrop or stay in a cabin...it will depend on if A&R are coming from out of state. :-D
Carol, Viki and Mr. & Mrs. Jet - It will be good to see you guys again!

Happy that you guys will be there and we're keeping our fingers crossed for A&R.
There are still a few cabins available, but probably not for long.
You could book a cabin now and (if necessary) cancell the reservation later should you decide to Tear Drop it... just sayin'. :|
Miss Ellie & Co. 09-02-2011, 07:56 PM Opps! Hit the wrong button on the Poll. :x
You can only vote once.
Miss Ellie & Co. 09-02-2011, 07:58 PM And this year I'll make it to Eureka Dunes.

Free_man_E 09-14-2011, 12:48 AM Dang all the good camp sites are already taken,

John, none of us are in sites 74 - 91 they were sold out long ago.
We are all in the front row of the campground; sites 117 - 135 (even these sites are going fast due to it being a 3 day holiday week end - Presidents Day.)
I'm in 130, Motel_E 132, Jet 128
As of now, there are 44 of 133 campsites available (and its only September!)
I think you should grab a campsite as soon as you can.
We're off to a slow start with people bagging reservations.
I worry bout the entire campground getting sold out before everyone who'll want to go gets around to reserving a site.
At this rate peeps with campsites will be sharing it with others, which is OK but only 3 of us have campsites at the moment -
and that's not near enough to accomadate everyone who'll want to attend.
Go book yourselves a campsite.
Free_man_E 09-15-2011, 03:35 PM I just booked my site :)
@ this time it's just me, and I sleep in my E
so I can share this site with someone else.

How as this "Hot Wheels" effect created ? Is it a Photoshop (computer) effect or was it created with the camera ?

We're staying here:
Free_man_E 09-23-2011, 03:01 PM For those who are interested, here is the info on the LED Xmas lights that I
used to illuminate the easy up's.
http://www.homedepot.com/Decor-Holiday-Decorations-Christmas-Christmas-Lights/EcoSmart/h_d1/N-5yc1vZbd6tZ4b8/R-202212480/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
I wouldn't buy them on line because there color output can change from one
manufactured batch to the next. I'd plug each one in to make sure there color
match between them. I've seen this same thing happen with other brands of
white LED Xmas lights not just this brand.
Home Depot sells other Ecosmart brand LED light sets, but make shure that
the words "flicker-free lighting" is printed on the side of the package.
Also just about any DC to AC inverter will work with these lights. The two
strings of 100 LEDs would only draw 16.8 watts, 8.4 per 100 LEDs.
As for a battery I'd look for one that's at least 33 amp per hour to last
for about eight hours. But it would be cheaper to buy a standard
80 Ah deep cycle marine battery Group Size 24M.
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02827494000P?prdNo=11
Also a battery box to keep it in.
http://www.amazon.com/Attwood-Standard-Battery-Vented-24/dp/B001O0D6QA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1316807021&sr=8-1
I charge mine at the camp site by hooking it up to my car battery with
jumper cables and running the engine for about 45 min or so.
And the easiest way to connect the DC to AC inverter to the battery
is to find an inverter that comes with alligator clip cables.

Really looking forward to meeting some new people, looks like it will be a good turn out!

And even though it will be February.. make sure to bring your swim trunks!
After a day of tooling around this huge and incredibly beautiful desert national park, you can stroll on over to the pool and relax.
The pool (which is extrodinary) is fed from underground springs and heated to around 80 degrees.
It boasts an 8.5 foot deep end and is open from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM.
Day and moonlight swimming at it's best!
Never ever crowded and usually void of people
It's one of Death Valley's hidden jewels.
Located in the "back-40" of the sprawling Furance Creek Ranch complex, most visitors to the park don't even know it exists.

Very nice painting Ms. Jet.
DV has more than a few unusal weather moments.
And last year there was snow in the higher elevations. (fortunately not in the campground)
Parkas and Umbrellas are on our check list. :-)

A big mystery at the moment..
Don't know for sure but my last conversation with Greg had him mumbling something about Glen not working at DV this winter.
If so we must bring wood or find out if we can raid the wood pile out behind the swimming pool.

The timing just might work.
I got your pm about the photos you posted. Here are my thoughts:
There are two kinds of photographers.
Some spend gajillions of $ of all the latest equipment and while their pictures are always perfectly exposed and sharp, they are sterile. No life there. No emotion. They do not grab you.
Then there are the ones that have, what I call, "The Eye". It cannot be taught. It's a gift like good artists have. Right brain versus left. The photo might not be technically correct but it is compelling, and draws the viewer into your thoughts at the time.
Photos are the closest thing we have right now to time travel. Have you ever looked at an old picture of yourself, a family member, or a place you have been. Do your eyes slightly glaze as you drift back and sense the smell, the sounds, the taste of that moment captured in time?
John, you have "The Eye".
Regards,
Greg

As I mumbled to Gene before y'all went on the trip to Lake Sis, Glenn will NOT be working at DV this winter. We are going on a 2+ month trip that kinda looks like this:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l223/wgwood/Trip.jpg
We will be leaving on 10/23 in a nutty conveyance. It will consist of his new Jetta Diesel Sportswagen with my canoe on top, followed by his teardrop with 2 bikes on a rack at the back.
No real destinations on the way to our first stop near Pittsburgh to visit a friend of Glenn's. Then we head to Raleigh to visit another bud. We'll take a train to DC and hang for 3 days, then I have to work, lol. Heading for the coast, we will camp at Myrtle Beach SP and then follow the coastline down to Key West and continue NW and SW to Corpus Christi. I'll be doing "My Job" during that time. Then heading back to CA around the beginning of 2012.
Here are some detailed views of our stops:

Mels E 10-07-2011, 06:52 PM Hi all, sorry for being so quiet lately. Steve and myself did a couple of vacations, right after our great trip to Shasta. One week to Park City Utah and and another to South Lake Tahoe. I will put in a picture of each place over the weekend.
"Mels E" (the car) is upset cuz these were trips with our timeshare. So in all fairness I need to get the "E" on the road again or it may get revenge! So, I will be coming to Death Valley, and man, with the caliber of fine folks already signing up - how could I not go! I will see if Steve can make the trek with me (if he can get Friday or Tues off so we can make the trip as long as possible (it is a long drive).
Glad to hear we may have Glen and Greg. I am envious of the trip they are doing. I want to go!
We need Rick, the drums and his lovely girlfriend.
Josh, you are the Death Valley expert, hope you can make it with Kristen.
Where is Bob when we need him, come on down to the desert.
Have a good weekend all
It is a good thing we have lots of EZ UPs in the group (pic of Shasta)

Zombie_AZ 10-27-2011, 08:31 AM I may have to really try and make this, for two reasons. One is to meet more E heads, and two I haven't been camping in years.
You really should join us, we've never had a Zombie at our camp.
Any precautions we should take prior to your arrival ?
Do you play any musical instruments ?
Do you have any special dish you want to share with our "Pot Luck Dinner" ?
I've been feeling guilty about my lack of participation in the F/X lighting around each campsite and I've decided to make a statement this next Camp.
I was inspired by a recent u-tube video I saw of Burning Man.

No special precautions for me, I'll just have to be quiet while everyone is asleep, since i don't. I do not play any instruments. And as far as food, your talkin to a fat Southern boy. I can make a few different special dishes, anywhere from award winning ribs, or my Cajun Scrambled Eggs.

Legioss 11-14-2011, 01:26 PM I may be bringing a few people from school, how many people can you have in a site?
I would get ANY open spot closest to us ASAP, even if not nearby. If there are NO spots, just be religious about watching the site and one will usually show up. Or you can get a distant spot, and move closer as closer spots open up. I was watching last year, and it seemed to change almost daily with people making and canceling reservations. And even when you get there, you will see spots that people didn't bother to cancel and are open, and the rangers(?) can give them out (sometimes without the permission of the person who reserved it) ((got bit last year)). If all of THAT fails, I THINK my spot is a 2-car, and I'm only 1+tent at the moment.
Anybody else want to clarify on people/cars allowed?
Miss Ellie & Co. 11-14-2011, 05:21 PM Furnace Creek Campground
at Death Valley is completely sold out for our date with all of the campsites reserved. (including the Walk-In campsites)
But have no fear!
We'll figure out how to accomadate everyone who wants to attend.
Furnace Creek allows 2 vehicles and 8 people per campsite.
The campsites in our section of the campground are large with lots of room for multiple tents.
Be a star and share you site with someone. 8)
Texas Spring Campground
If you perfer a campsite to yourself for whatever reasons, the other option is nearby Texas Spring Campground.
It's partially visable from the Furnace Creek Campground.
Texas Spring has "91" campsites and it's "first come first served" reservations are not accepted.
Texas Spring would be the alternate campground.
It's good campground up on a hill above the Furnace Creek complex and where the Restrooms that are on the National Historic Register are located.
Campsites at Texas Spring should be available to those wanting them if arriving on Thursday or up until late Friday afternoon.

Possible, and I hope you're right but I think it unlikely as it's a three day Holiday Week End.
But hey! I've been wrong before.
No harm in trying.
Not trying to be negative.
Just looking at this in a worst case senario and trying to figure all the angles.

Scott, the chain pull toilets in the Texas Spring bathrooms are the shiz!
Just imagine yourself taking care of business in such a historical setting.

Miss Ellie & Co. 11-15-2011, 03:25 PM Alex and Randy (accordguy03) are coming all the way down from Washington State to join us at DV.
Both are a couple of shameless, hard core Trekkies.
So why not come up with a Star Trek themed mixed drink?
Here's the signature drink for the camping binge...
ROMULAN ALE!
http://img.foodnetwork.com/FOOD/2010/01/21/FNM_030110-Oscar-Snacks-007_s3x4_lg.jpg
Ingrediants = There's a few different types of Romulan Ale recipes most are made with 151 Rum.
I have a different take on this drink. I make mine with a nice Blueberry infused Vodka and other surprise ingrediants.
We've made a few of these guys at home and they are actually quite good!
If you don't want to wait until the Death Valley Meet,
I'll be testing my Romulan Ale out on unsuspecting innocents at the Santa Barbara/Cachuma Lake Camping Meet on Thanksgiving Week End.

We sure wish we could make this trip, its shaping up to be a great one! I loved camping in DV and miss it so much. Hopefully this year it stays dry, unlike the past two.... I don't want to read about all these teardrops in DV washing down into Badwater Basin.
I didn't read through all the posts, and am not sure if you're still taking the same route into the park for the caravan.... Denny's, Trona, endless desert...... I just wanted to tell you, that some Raptors recently did a 200+ mile run through DV, and stopped in Trona for gas. Apparently they were out of the regular petrol and only had diesel. Luckily for them, they had a chase truck with extra fuel and a bunch of gas cans on board.
I'm not suggesting that they'll be in the same situation when/if you're passing through... I mean we only stop for the Bible verses in the potty anyways right?... but just something to be prepared for in your gas calculations.
Lacy and I were planning a Vegas trip sometime the beginning of next year... maybe I can use the time up until then, to convince her to drive down, instead of flying, then we can swing on through camp for a few hours. Might be possible, 'specially since Vegas is only 2 1/2hrs outside of Furnace Creek.... might... just... be...

Do try and make it. Your Big Bad Black Raptor would love DV!
Talk Lacy into it!
There's a lot of non-camping overnight options available too.
Aside from Cabin and motel rooms at Furnace Creek, there's a motel at Stovepipe Wells, a few motels in Beatty.. the Stagecoach Inn & Casino, Atomic Inn and Panamint Springs Resort on 190 just before you enter the park which boasts an impressive beer selection in the bar.
Add another day to your Las Vegas trip and join us!

She wishes we could work out the logistics of swinging by DV to see everyone. But as it stands, the upcoming Vegas trip, will be our first weekend away from baby Jack and she'd rather be a 1hr plane ride away, than a trucker butt inducing 10hr drive away. I countered this with the notion that the plane ride, even if we drive down, is still available in case of emergency. Some ho-humming ensued... this is going to take some time...
..trust me though, I tried all the angles..
1: drive down together, say Hi in DV, continue to Vegas, she flies home
2: I drive down to DV, she flies into DV, we say Hi, continue to Vegas, she flies home
3: I drive to Vegas, she flies, say Hi in DV on the drive home together
...yadda yadda yadda...
Miss Ellie & Co. 11-16-2011, 06:22 PM Paul - I understand the perdicament.
Lacy wants to be pampered in luxury at Vegas.
The new mom's first break from Baby Jack in close to a year!
I certainly understand if you do Vegas and not DV.
If you drive to Vegas in the Raptor, we'll call you at your casino and ask you to pick up some pizzas and delivery them to the campground.
You could tell Lacy it's a "Mission of Mercy"
Speaking of pizzas.. remember the Pizza joint we got the pies from when we last camped at Tahoe?
It was featured on the Food Channel today on a "best pizza I ever ate" show.
I knew those Lake Tahoe Pizza Co. pizzas were yummy but I never thought I'd see them featured on The Food Channel!

jdiane 12-03-2011, 05:09 PM We're definately looking at DV 12, hopefully we will make it this year! But with Furnace Creek CG full, Texas spring does sound good, but has anyone camped at Emigrant Spring? But at 1800 feet in February, it might be a bit cold...
Anyone done Cottonwood Canyon Road in an E? At least the first 8-9 miles?
What the ________? I just got a phone call from Furnace Creek Campground indicating that they are putting in new Utilities and that My Reservation would be honored at a different Park. Is it just me or does this seem a little screwey? So much for the planning and early reservations.:x

WTF? Really? What campground would that be?
I haven't recieved a call from them yet. at least that I'm aware of.
We need to get a hold of someone at the park and get to the bottom of this.
John, Tonya, Alex and Randy are renting cabins at Furance Creek. I hope that's not the other campground they're referring to. ;-)
cyclotour 12-06-2011, 03:45 PM I just got the same call. Just checked the reservations website and nothing new there. Why would they remodel the campground at the peak of visitation???

cyclotour 12-06-2011, 04:04 PM I just called the park. Yes, it is true. They are moving campers to Sunset and Texas Springs. I told her that Sunset was not equitable and that there was a group of us camping together. She said we could call the fee office for more information. 760-786-3200 ext 249.

This bites. Sunset isn't even a campground. It's basically just a big parking lot for RVs and there are no tables or fire pits there.
Texas Springs might work.
I'll speak with the Fee Office tomorrow and get more details.
Dang*
Miss Ellie & Co. 12-06-2011, 09:11 PM Assuming the worse, this might be an option should we all not be able to get sites at Texas Springs.
(Sunset Campground is unacceptable, we must come up with something better than that)
Panamint Springs Resort http://deathvalley.com/psr/
Panamint Springs Resort is just outside the west entrance of the park where Rt 178 and Rt 190 converge.
Motel, Restuarant, Bar and a "campground" which also has a Group Camp for $55 per night.
The Group Camp might be available for our February dates. I'll talk to the friendly folks at Panamint Springs resort tomorrow and find out.
If it's available we might just want to consider booking the Group Camp.
Wolfmoms 12-06-2011, 09:17 PM They also called me ... left 3 messages on my voicemail! Where is Texas Springs in relation to Furnace Creek? Are they going to move all of us as a group so we are in the same location? I'm (wolfmoms) in Space #4. Can you haul a trailer into Texas Springs I plan to bring my teardrop? Guess I'd better give the Fee office a call tomorrow as well. -- Laura
ps: this sucks! :x:-(:|
Wolfmoms 12-06-2011, 09:20 PM Also, are they going to refund our money if we don't get a site together? Will they refund the difference in cost between Furnace Creek and Texas Springs? It's cheaper. I'm bummed!!!!
cyclotour 12-06-2011, 09:28 PM Panamint Springs is high and cold in February. The campground near Scotty's Castle (Willow Springs?) is decent but is first come, first serve. Texas Springs would be the most centrally located and is OK. We will need to figure out how many camps we need. Maybe they will be lenient on # of vehicles per site. And there should be a refund!!
cyclotour 12-06-2011, 09:35 PM We are campsite 121

Wolfmoms 12-06-2011, 09:45 PM Which campground?
Currently in space #4 at Furnace Creek. Waiting to see where the group ends up. Will call Fee office tomorrow.
cyclotour 12-06-2011, 10:02 PM Furnace Creek
Miss Ellie & Co. 12-06-2011, 10:09 PM So.. has anyone offically been designated/transferred to another campground yet? (Texas Springs or otherwise)
We haven't got any calls from the Park services yet.
This is probably due to the fact that I changed my Cell number recently and they don't have it.
I'll call em tomorrow.
If for some reason I cannot get a site at Texas Springs, then I'll probably opt for a campsite at Panamint Springs. (weather or not)
Free_man_E 12-06-2011, 11:10 PM I got the same &^%^%$% phone call today too!!!:x:x

Miss Ellie & Co. 12-07-2011, 09:27 AM This will work as long as we can all be assigned sites at Texas Springs.
However, Furnace Creek has 132 sites and Texas Springs has 92.
I think it means that 44 unlucky folks with campsite reservations for Furnace Creek will be exiled to the Sunset parking lot.
We need to find out how they determine who goes where.
cyclotour 12-07-2011, 10:04 AM How many are in our group?
cyclotour 12-07-2011, 10:17 AM I just called DV and talked w/ Traci. She said the plan is tenters will go to Texas Springs, RV's to Sunset. She suggested contacting her (I have her email address) 3 weeks out to confirm the plan. She also said that we could send information about our group and they would try to figure something out. Also, rec.gov has been instructed to give a FULL refund if the trip is canceled.
Legioss 12-07-2011, 10:34 AM Im suspicious. How is it that Texas Springs was empty or open enough to squeeze all the Furnace Creekers in?
On a sidenote, all this confusion, plus potential cancellations sound like a good time to squeeze in a new reservation if someone hasn't booked yet.
Also, I think we should remedy this and get new TS spots NOW unless they refuse. Waiting until 3wks out is a recipe for disaster.

Texas Spring (prior to this situation) is/was a "first come first serve" campground and I think that's why Texas Spring has the availablity.
As I mentioned earlier, There are 44 fewer campsites at Texas Spring than Furnace Creek.
I doubt additional resevations can be made at TS as the math won't allow it.
The process of transferring the reserved sites from Furnace Creek to Texas Springs, will fill Texas Spring to capacity for our selected dates.
Legioss 12-07-2011, 11:21 AM Im still sticking to my old opinion/experience. If you dont have a reservation, and want one, keep trying to make one. People cancel/switch, websites/people malfunction, etc.
So who is spearheading our site reservation transfer?
Miss Ellie & Co. 12-07-2011, 12:01 PM Not to be a bummer but, I think we might run into snags with this.
I really don't trust this process. (three weeks prior to arrival date)
I'm concerned that some of us might not get sites at Texas Spring as they haven't guaranteed us anything specific yet, i.e assigned site numbers at Texas Springs.
I'm still looking into Panamint Springs Resort as a fall back option.
Yes it's 10-20 degrees cooler at Panamint Springs than in the valley.
That's the negative.
Here are some positives:
Panamint Springs Resort has a Western rustic charm with a motel, campground and group camp site.
There's a Mini Mart & Gift Shop, restaurant/bar and 10% discount for AAA and AARP members.
Group Camp Site is $55 per night. (split that between everyone and you're camping for less than $5 per night.)
There are also 12 RV sites (30-50 amp) at $30 per night for those who need it.
* The Group Camp:
$55 Per night - also has a "Small Stage" w/power for a P/A system and a large fire pit.
(Showers are free included in the Group Site fee)
* 12 RV Sites:
(20-30 Amp) $30 per night
* Motel:
1 Queen = $79 per night
1 King = $84 per night
2 Beds = 1 Queen & 1 Double
3 Beds = 1 Queen & 2 Doubles
2 Bedroom Cottage = $149 per night
The restaurant features great handmade food, excellent pizza and burgers made with 100% Angus Beef.
And the bar has over 150 different beers from all over the world.
I've already contacted Panamint Springs Resort and explained to them our situation.
The Group Camp Site is available for our selected dates and they would love to have us.
What to do? What to do?
We could hang back and see if everything pans out OK at Texas Springs, but I'm sure that some other group will of bagged the Group Site at Panamint Springs by then.
PS: The small stage is intriguing.
.
cyclotour 12-07-2011, 12:13 PM I just looked at the Panamint Springs web site. I like it. I was thinking it was much higher in elevation.
Miss Ellie & Co. 12-07-2011, 12:19 PM I'll be talking with Amanda at Panamint Springs Resort tomorrow.
Maybe by then we'll have enough feedback from peeps to render a decision on booking this group site.
I need feedback from ya'll on this.
Panamint Springs Resort - Yelp reviews: http://www.yelp.com/biz/panamint-springs-resort-death-valley
motelE 12-07-2011, 01:42 PM I too got a call yesturday but the idiot on the other end didn't wait for the beep before they started talking, all I heard was the last two words "New campground". I google the number & it was from Death Valley. I called and the guy confirmed my reservations and didn't say anything about another campground. So maybe I better call again.
2:20 pm Called the 760 #, spoke to a Tracey. As tenters we would be moved to Texas Springs. I didn't ask about doubling up in each space if we needed to. I'm happy going to Texas Springs if the club wants too. Tracey said we can get full refunds if we choose to go elsewhere. She also said they are replacing all the water lines & updating the plumbing in the campground, which is something you don't want to tackle in the middle of summer.
Free_man_E 12-07-2011, 04:40 PM I'm up for Panamint Springs, if it guaranties that we all can camp
in the same place. If we do this recreation.gov better give all of
us a refund. Also I'll have to get some thermal underwear if the
weather is going to be like it was last year. There was about one
to three inches of snow on the ground around Scotty's Castle.

Miss Ellie & Co. 12-07-2011, 04:56 PM I got a call today from "Ranger Tim" at Death Valley National Park.
He assures me that any of us with reserved "tent sites" at Furnace Creek will be moved to Texas Springs on our selected dates.
I explained to him that we are a group of 13 vehicles all with 'seperate, individual campsite reservations and we would like to be linked together side-by- each in the campground, instead of flung out all over the place.
This could be done but it will require some leg work. (more on that later)
If you have a trailer or Tear Drop you might be designated to Sunset and not Texas Springs.
As I was driving when I took Ranger Tim's call, I wasn't able to ask him about it.
I'll call him back later tomorrow and see what the deal is on getting side by each campsites.
So it looks as though things will work out with Texas Springs. (depending on whether or not you trust the park service not to screw things up on us)
I'm still on the fence with the Panamint Springs Resort option.
Should we trust the National Park service to insure that all of us get campsites at Texas Spring or say the heck with it and grab the Group Site at Panamint Springs Resort?
I'm thinking we should stick to the Texas Spring plan because some of us have sprung for Cabin Reservations at Furnace Creek Ranch.
It was the small stage with the P/A System for our musician friends and more than 150 beers from around the world that got me all riled up about Panamint Springs Resort.
The curious might be interested in doing the 40 min drive from Furnace Creek as part of a day trip.
We could do lunch, scope the place out for future camp meets, trek around and explore that area of the Park.
Heck PSR's beer selection alone, is enough to get my attention, as you'll see in the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnAtfbUvYDs
I don't care which Campsite is the Official EOC Campsite, my concern is that we will have "Camping Fools" spread all over DV and trying to coordinate the Caravans, Camp Breakfast, Gift Exchange & Ceremonial Campfire Music Sing a long will be more difficult if not impossible.
Is there a deadline for confirming the new Campsite ?
Is there a deadline for getting a Refund ?
Could we lock down the Group Site @ Panamint Springs with a Refundable Deposit ?
Legioss 12-08-2011, 03:04 PM I'm good for either site, preferably all of us as close together as possible. I am a bit leery of the colder site, but I'm sure I can layer up.
motelE 12-08-2011, 03:57 PM If we plan on driving around DV we better take Texas Springs. It's a long drive from Panamint Springs to do anything in DV. Especially when gas is $4.
I'm voting Texas Springs. We'll just have to double up.
I'm just wondering why if the park knew they were going to be updating the water system why take reservations? Just add a memo "Park Closed for Remodling" and there wouldn't be this confusion. :?
I should ammend my comment by saying if everyone wants to do the Panamint Springs group camp I'm fine with that. At DV if anyone with a teardrop has to be separate from the group that won't be any fun. Panamint Springs sounds like a nice place to camp.
Miss Ellie & Co. 12-08-2011, 04:24 PM I spoke with Amanda at Panamint Springs Resort.
The Group Campsite:
We can book thier Group Site for $55 per night.
It will accomadate around 30 people, there's the small stage with electricity (which can only be used by people in the Group Site)
There's also a large (centrally located) fire pit.
The group camp site is circular ring, surrounded by a corral fence.
Vehicles are parked outside the ring behind the fence posts.
Individual Campsites:
Are $7.50 per night
Equipped with water, tables, fire ring and shade trees.
One vehicle per site.
CHEAP!
RV/Trailer Sites:
Few are currently available. February is a busy time of year for them.
There maybe be some with just water available too.
For more info contact "Amanda" at Panamint Springs Resort.

PS: Our tent has a large tear on the top of one of the fiberglass pole sleeves.
Still functional but not for Death Valley.
We were thinking about renting a trailer but not if we're going to be exiled to Sunset.
We may have to purchase a new tent instead.
If you're tent camping you'll be OK at Texas Springs but if you have a trailer of any sort,
expect to be on the asphalt at Sunset with no table or fire pit.
Damn!! I wish the chuckle heads at Death Valley had given us more notice on this so we could arrange alternative accomadations in a timely manner.
As it is now we're under the gun scrambling for whatever is available of which there are few options.
Heck - Richelle and I still don't know what we're going to do.
If we can get Hook Ups at Panamint Springs we'll opt for the trailer and stay there.
If we can't, we'll spring for a new tent and stay at Texas Springs.
geesh!
PPS: I still like the idea of the group camp. At $55 per night this is a real bargain.
Heck - even if just a few of us stayed there, we would have a campsite large enough for all our entertainment activities, Gag Gift Exchange, a stage, free showers, restuarant, bar etc.
We'll have a HUGE campsite thats large enough for all of us to hang out and have fun, especially at night!
It's a 40 min drive from Furnace Creek.
Wolfmoms 12-08-2011, 06:19 PM Decided to bail on this trip. Called the 800 refund phone number this morning and without any drama got a refund in the works. I was planning to pull the Teardrop and did not want to be exiled to Sunset. Panamint is a cute little place ... stopped in there October 2010 ... looks like a great little place to have a group event with some advance planning for any trailer haulers. Oh well, there's always 2013 ... enjoy the gathering and I'll watch for pictures in March. -- Laura
Free_man_E 12-08-2011, 07:46 PM I'm up for what everyone else wants to do. I haven't heard from Mels E
yet, we where going to share a campsite. I need to find out what they want
to do.
cyclotour 12-08-2011, 10:33 PM Texa springs does usually allow smaller campers. If we are all together maybe they will allow a few rigs. We can tent camp and would prefer that to exile at Sunset Parking Lot. We are open to whatever is decided so long as it is not in snow.
Just had a thought flash in: Bailey Hot Springs in Beatty? I have never been there but was planning to stop on our way in. No idea of what it is like.
cyclotour 12-08-2011, 10:37 PM Can Panamint be reserved then canceled if Texas Springs works out? They indicated that they couldn't tell us for sure until 3 weeks out. That could leave no other options.
I thought about J-Tree but probably to cold in February.

Laura, sorry that you've decided to bail out. :-(
And I was looking forward to meeting you. :-)
I hope that you'll consider attending our "yet to be announced but sure gonna happen" camping meets in 2012. (you don't have to wait until DV 2013)
Miss Ellie & Co. 12-08-2011, 11:25 PM Dave (Jet) and I want to reserve the Group Camp site at Panamint Springs Resort.
Can't confirm until tomorrow during working hours. We need to OK the dates but as of today it was available.
We're holding on to our reservations at Texas Springs too.
At some point prior to the refund cancellation dates at either campground we will cancel our reservations at which ever campground " least " suits our needs
Of cousre peeps can stay at which ever campground they choose to
.
Some might not like Texas Springs. Been there, as a campground it ain't all that pretty, but it has fantastic views, and from the way things are looking it's gonna be bustling with campers.
It's smack dab in the middle of the Park.
Some might not like Panamint Springs as it will be colder. It's real pretty, remote, and has all the creature comfort ammenities we crave, showers, hot water, restaurant, bar, no crowds and allegedly really kewl people run amd frequent the place.
For the time being it's important that people not cancel thier existing reservations at Furnace Creek/Texas Springs/Sunset... whatever.
No matter what, hang on to your reservations until near it's refund cancelation date.
Oh yeah, Dave (bless his heart) is springing for the full cost deposit.
Those who want to do Panamint Springs will reimburse him at camp.
The cost is your portion of $55 per night divided by how many people we'll have in the Group Camp.
Questions? Anyone :?

cyclotour 12-08-2011, 11:49 PM I like it. Miss Ellie, thanks for doing all the work.
motelE 12-09-2011, 11:39 AM Yes, this is a workable solution. Dont' give up your reservations in DV yet. I'm in for Panamint, it sounds like a good deal. But keeping my options open. Thanks goes to the Camping Fools campground director, Miss Ellie. :029:
Free_man_E 12-09-2011, 08:54 PM It could be worse, we could be stuck camping at the campground
at Stovepipe Wells. I stayed there several years ago tent camping
and theirs no shade there at all, not a single tree to be found, just
an occasional scraggly bush. Man it was hot in the afternoons.
Miss Ellie & Co. 12-09-2011, 09:23 PM Good News!
We got the Panamint Springs Resort ~ Group Camp site!
February 16-19 Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Thanks to Dave (who's currently on the road to Prescott, AZ and The Grand Canyon) we've got ourselves some pretty bitchin camping digs. 8)
As mentioned earlier make sure to hold on to your current reservations for a little while longer.
And certainly don't let them go until you are sure which of the two campgrounds you'll want to stay in.
We suspect that any canceled Furnace Creek reservations will immediately be issued to other campers-in-need by the Park Service.
Once we start cancelling reservations... they'll be gone with the wind! :holhalloween8:
Me so happy! :jump021:
Mels E 12-09-2011, 11:05 PM Hi there just read all the going on's. Wow I sure missed a lot over the past week. Yes count us in for the group camping gig. As long as we are all camping together it all was fine for us.
cyclotour 12-09-2011, 11:38 PM Now that I'm used to the idead I am looking forward to exploring a different area of the park.
Greetings from Blythe, CA. enroute to Prescott, AZ. I just wanted confirm that I did reserve the Group Campsite at Panamint Springs.
So, I guess the next step is to get our money refunded before they decide to keep it.
Mels E 12-10-2011, 01:02 PM Now that I'm used to the idead I am looking forward to exploring a different area of the park.
Ditto on that! This will broaden our camping experiences in Death Valley.
Thanks Gene for doing the footwork and everyone else that helped (and DAve for the temporary funding).
So John lets ditch the site and go with the new digs!
jdiane 12-10-2011, 02:20 PM I like the idea of Panamint Springs. Lots of cool stuff on the western side of DV. Can we get a photo of the group site? Just wondering if there are trees for group camp shade? Greg's website campsitephotos.com has spoiled me to looking before I camp. ;-)
Miss Ellie & Co. 12-10-2011, 02:55 PM I've been trying to find some vids on Panamint Springs Resort.
Few exist on youtube but I did find a teaser that might whet your whistles - check it out.
Panamint Springs Resort appears at 3:21 in the following video.
It shows the restaurant and motels rooms - the campground is accross the street from the restaurant but all that can seen of it is the trees.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6vdkHtSc_c
I'll post more vids on kewl things to do and see on the western side of the park as soon as I find some.
Stay tuned.
Miss Ellie & Co. 12-10-2011, 03:14 PM You want to visit ghost towns like Rhyolite?
We'll we got one nearby Panamint Springs too.. "BALLARAT"

Not too far away from the campground off of Route 190 is the location of the U2 Joshua Tree (which was the photo on U2's epic 1987 Album "The Joshua Tree"
The tree fell over and died during a storm about 10 years ago.
All that left of it is the carcass.
Since that time, a couple of dedicated U2 fans made a bronze plaque and embedded into the ground where the tree once stood.
Along with the plaque is the U-Tube, and all sorts of U2 memorabilia.
This location is a few 100 yards from pavement (you walk to it) - however simple GPS coordinates are needed to find the exact location.
Without GPS it's like looking for a needle in a hay stack.
Just need to Google map "U2 Joshua Tree" for the coordinates.

We had to put our old Chevy Blazer out to pasture and were looking for a used 4WD V8 SUV to replace it.

We'll most likely be taking it to Death Valley instead of Miss Ellie.

Good idea!
And we will have some trekkies in the crew..
Heck - we could drink Romulan Ale and go off on UFO Hunts. :alien:
motelE 12-12-2011, 11:37 AM Count me in on Panamint Springs. I'll keep DV reservations for a while yet, then cancell. A Trekie theme will be fun. We'll need lots of firewood for this campout. Death Valley will be there next year with all new plumbing, even better for the Camping Fools.
Firewood ? Gene and I had it all figured out how we were going over to the secret Firewood stash by the Golf course but I guess that's out.
Where's Glen when we need him ?
Here is a pic of a Star Wars mod that was posted a few years back.

The following video is a Christain 4X4 group that camped in the Group Site at Panamint Springs Resort back in May of 2011.
You can mute the volume if you don't want to hear the speeches, Jesus songs and skip through the (seen one - seen em all) off-roading parts.
However, 2:10 thru 3:30 in the video gives us glimpses of the group campsite, the stage and surrounding foliage.

Firewood is a must.
Buying it at home is most cost effective.
But how much wood can you pack inside an Element that's already filled to the gills with camping gear? - not much and we'll be needing a lot of it.
We can purchase wood at camp but it will be expensive and we should try to avoid that if possible
Solutions?
Ridgecrest is the nearest place I could find to purchase firewood in bulk.
A 2 hour drive (one-way) from camp.
I propose that those who might be interested, do a day trip to Ridgecrest for a firewood run.
I know it might sound crazy but there's alot of kewl things to see and do, to and from Ridgecrest.
We could incorporate some really nice side trips along the way to make the drive really worth our while and fun with stops at Ballarat Ghost Town, the Charcol Klins at Wildrose Peak, and incredible photo opps at Aguereberry Point.
Of course driving straight through the Panamint Valley (twice in the same day) will pretty much guarantee that we'll get straffed by F-16's!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bc2cfRyRbWU
Another plus:
A run to Ridgecrest for firewood will also allow us to stock up on "reasonably priced" provisions at full service grocery stores and anything else peeps might need or of forgotten to take on the trip.
Miss Ellie & Co. 12-13-2011, 03:04 PM Group Meals "Feeding the Masses"
You know how we love to cook on these camping excursions.
Are we up for another Chili Cook Off, Pot Luck or Taco Bar?
No matter what we decide on, I'll be making a lot of this...
The World's Best Guacamole
Yes I know that's strong claim to be making but it's no boast.
I have the secret ingrediant..
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41lmphVl5YL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
From the kitchen of Chef Ric Bayless "MEXICO - One Plate at a Time" is this absolutely awesome guacamole mix!
I used the Frontera mix for my guacamole last time at Cachuma and it was a big hit.
(Just ask John and Tonya, John was immediately addicted to this stuff as am I and anyone else who's tried it.)
NOTE: I've only been able to find this stuff at Whole Foods for $4.99 a bottle, it makes three cups.
It comes "wet" in the jar (not a dry mix) and well worth the price.
I've got a Cousin that lives in Ridgecrest (Secret stuff for the Defense Dept). He is looking into a Firewood supply for me/us.
Also, as we were discussing the F-16's last week-end; he indicated that Valley is only place in US where jets can do Mach 2 at ground level, apparently the Enviromental studies found no native animals would be affected. Wild Burros & Horses don't count.
I am prepared to defend my (Self declared) "Best Chili Ever" title if anyone wants to challenge me.
motelE 12-14-2011, 01:59 PM I think a chili cook off would be perfect because we are going to be COLD. I accept your challenge. 8) The hotter the better. :chef:

I'm lovin those F-16s! Can't wait to be straffed again!
Sometimes it's like a private air show out there.
The last time it happened two low flying jets did "straight up in the sky vapor trails" followed by a set of earthquaking sonic booms that were so loud I thought the Element had blown up. geesh!
Oh goodie! A Chili Cook Off challenge!
We know the drill, give your chili a name and let the chefs do they're thing.. erp*

LOL camping in the middle of Badwater might be fun.
This is what we think we know at the moment..
Vehicles are parked outside of the center area of the Group Camp site, I'm assuming the outside perimeter area.
I don't know if there's actually a fence or not. I was told it's like a corral but I'm not sure what that implies.
As far as trailers go..
When I last spoke with PSR I was inquiring about RV sites with Hook Ups.
Only one was available.
However, as we'll be able to park our Elements around the group site area, small Tear Drops, or Tent Trailers (dry camping w/out hook ups) should be OK.
I'll call PSR tomorrow and find out for sure.

Yeah, we're bringing extra everything to keep warm with. Tent heater, double bags, Coon Skin Hat, wool socks, gloves, tequila..
LOL - No not yet. I'll make sure to watch the DVD tonight and report back tomorrow.
It's tomorrow and I was only able to watch the previews, I couldn't get my DVD player to play the movie.
Don't ask me why cause I don't know.
I'll give it another go tonight - Richelle should be able to figure out why it won't play.

Small trailers are fine.
When I spoke with John at Panamint Springs Resort this morning I found out there is plenty of space available around the group campsite to park them.
He keeps referring to the group campsite as a "Corral" and they prefer tents only inside the corral.
This so called corral is where the large central fire pit is located, tables, stage and where our tents will be.
(There are no horses, burros, pigmy ponies or farm critters here - the word "corral" is used for discription purposes.)
Vehicles with or out without trailers are parked in outer ring of the corral which I am told has ample space for the trailers and eveything else.
So should you want to bring a trailer along you'll be fine. :-)
Got it? ;-)
PS: Bikerjosh is very familiar with Panamint Springs Resort. But he hasn't posted or made an appearance on this thread yet.
If he had we would know everything there is to know about PSR - Josh has Death Valley wired inside and out. 8)

Legioss 12-16-2011, 06:16 PM I was thinking the exact same thing, but mine.
Last week, we went on a Road Trip to Arizona and the Grand Canyon. What an incredible place. We (EOC) should plan a Camping Trip sometime in the future, they had several beautiful campsites.
Anyway, here are a few pics of the beauty of the Grand Canyon.
Mels E 12-18-2011, 06:48 PM Dave, that looks beautiful. Yes that would be a good destination.
Speaking of destinations - we need to figure out where our big trip will be next year? The PG & E camp via Paul/Lacy? Back to the Shasta area? or something new?

Tonya - Find anything out about Panamint Springs motel reservations?
What if they're full for the selected dates?
You can always Tear Drop it at the campground should you find no availablty at the motel, we'de just need to work on a suitable tent set up for Alex & Randy.
Aside from the distance from there to Panamint Springs.. those Furnace Creek Cabins are very nice.
It's a lot more bustling and busy at Furance Creek compared to PSR which is "REMOTE" and "ISOLATED"
No neighbors within 20 miles.

Hey Everyone!! Sorry for being MIA for so long, but I was being dragged kicking and screaming around Disney world by john and tonya... thats my story anyways ;)
Looks like I missed one heck of a debacle regarding the camp site changes. We will crash where ever is convenient and we can find room, I just hope to be close to the group. I wish we could bring our little tent trailer down, but driving that far for a couple of days just does not make sense. Looking forward to finally getting to experience death valley.. I have been hearing a lot about it over the years.
I would also like to echo the question MelsE had... WHERE WILL THE CAMPING FOOLS END UP FOR "SUMMER CAMPING TRIP 2012"?????????

I hate it when they do that.

Yup, we was frantic for awhile after DV dropped the bomb on us by closing the Furnace Creek Campground.
The new camping digs at Panamint Springs Resort look very kewl and perfect for a group our size.

Summer Camping Trip 2012:
Things are tilting heavily towards a return to Mount Shasta/Lake Siskiyou and maybe 2 day side trip to the Coast Redwoods.
Nothings ethched in stone yet but alot of us would like to do Mt. Shasta again. :-)

That would be awesome.. Alex and I really liked that campsite. Do i get to drive the party boat again? :)
Mels E 12-24-2011, 01:04 AM For 2012 I would vote for Shasta again - or Humbolt (the group camp ground we went to a few years ago). Those that have not seen that place - it was great, we had our own private group camp and our own river (not a big one but yet cool).
Glad to hear Tonya and John that you are fine.
beemerchef 12-27-2011, 06:04 PM We have been to Panamint Springs a few time and it is a nice place to stay, still rugged as they are still expanding also.
Lone Pine is a very interesrting place to visit, specially Alabama Hills (http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/bishop/scenic_byways/alabamas.html), Movie Rd where so many Movies where filmed. Interesting Photography throughout Sunsets yet early as of course the Sun setting West will set the shadows very quickly.
It is actually warmer down "there" if someone wanted to spend the night to catch some good lights and the camping is free. (BLM). 80 miles away also has stores to re-provision if needed.
Just a thought... It is colder up there (Panamint), has always been a refuge off the Valley heat.

My latest camping trip got me even more excited for DV!! woohoo!
faheyd 12-28-2011, 12:25 PM I'm in on the springs group deal, thanks for all the hard work! Cancelled my Furnance creek reservations.
Dylan
Yay, Bob's going to be attending.
When you cancelled your reservation, did they charge you $10 as a cancellation fee ?
I started the process today until I was informed of the fee and I disputed it and I am currently waiting for a ruling from the DV Committee.
Normally, I wouldn't care and would accept the ding, but this time it was there fault not mine.
I will keep you posted, Going to REI now to use my dividend and Gift Card, before the end of the Year. (Use it or Lose it)

I just cancelled mine. I had to call both numbers, talk to 4 different people, got hung up on once, but got it all back. All I did was tell them about the email offering a full refund, and the rep got approval from her supervisor.
What "E-mail" are you referring to ? The only info I've received was a Robo type of call.

Yes indeed. We're anticipating cooler temps at Panamint Springs.
10 - 20 degrees chiller than the Valley. But the isolation/location is sweet and
we'll have an enormus campfire that can be seen from outer space.
We're also doing a Chili Cook Off Hot! Hot! Hot!
Snuggle with your sweeties, bring the dogs, wear thermal undies, wool socks for the footsies, a few bottles of your favorite fire water, down quilts and extra sleeping bags and you'll be fine.
Nice post Beemerchef and you're a Chef to boot! Yeeha!

Guaranteed great time!
So, not all Customer Service Reps are equal. The 1st time I was cursed with a Bi____. The 2nd time she was as nice as my Mom. Anyway, it's a "Done Deal" and now we can start getting serious.
I think I found some pics of Panamint Springs from last Year.
Dog Owned 12-28-2011, 06:19 PM Ok, 2 questions:
1) What are the actual dates that our group site is reserved?
I noticed on their online reservation calendar that the days our group will be there, all of the days are not marked as "reserved" for the group site. Can someone double-check with a live person for us?
2) How many people are allowed to stay at the same time in the group site?
BTW, looking forward to the gag gift Star Trek theme...as I'm sure Mel, Steve, Alex and Randy are, too!
Don't forget to bring Trailer Trash Barbie!
-T.
Miss Ellie & Co. 12-28-2011, 09:35 PM Tonya - yeah we missed reserving Sunday.
We need to contact PSR and add it to our dates. (shouldn't be a problem as it's available and unlikey another group would want it on that day)
Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday ~ February 16,17,18,19 ~ leaving on Monday.
Group Site: When asked, PSR said the Group Camp site would accomadate 30 or more people.
PS: Paul (Elemen-O-P) has a link on post #164 for Panamint Springs Resort that has many detailed photos and discriptions.
Do check it out.

Miss Ellie & Co. 12-29-2011, 12:40 PM Okee Doke.
Just spoke with John at Panamint Springs Resort and added "Sunday the 19th" to our Group Camp reservations.
The total cost for four days and nights will be $220 which will be split by everyone attending the gig. (except for Jet who we'll all be reimbursing)
Example: 20 peeps divided by $220 = $11 per person for the entire 4 nights. (WADDA BARGAIN!)
The following PSR dates are now "carved in granite"
February 16 -19 Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday

freezing my keyster off in Lake Tahoe because the shower
rooms didn't have heaters.

So this camping gig is at the group site at Panamint? Just show up and pay Dave some bucks?
Heck, Texas last week was 20 degrees so no mamby pambying. Rick had better show up if I do, being a fellow canuck.
Here is a pic for Dave from Myrtle Beach:

I have tons more from the last 2 month trip but you can see them in my blog in my sig. But what I will do is post a pic of our boy Glen learning about the food chain:

And that was the last of Glen, although I will admit that gator made a burp that reminded me of him.

Miss Ellie & Co. 12-31-2011, 12:41 PM Greg - That's pretty much the size of it.. just show up and fork over some piastas to paymaster "Jet".
You know how you keep threatening to make the gig but never do?
Surprise us this time and actually show up!
Speaking of showing up.. What about Glenn? Did he really get et by a gator?
The poor gator probably coughed him up .. "yuck"! what the hell was that thing?!"
Anywho hope you both make it to Pananmint Springs - this is going to be epic!
PS: Been in contact with Ric.
He will be there. Will you?

Hey, I resemble that remark!
I have been working...
Someone has to go camping 9 months a year to help other camping peeps see what the campgrounds look like.
In the last 5 months I have spent 4 of them in my tent. But I digress...
I won't be on the road again until April when I plan on rambling through the northwest, my favorite part of the country. Maybe for 6 months.
So I will (probably) be able to make this gig. Especially if my green beaded fellow canuck is there. Is he bringing drums?

Mels E 12-31-2011, 10:52 PM WE need to find Ric! Perhaps he now has hit the big time in movies and has no time for us E campers!
Elemen-O-P 01-03-2012, 02:49 PM What's the itinerary for this campout? I know we're usually fly by the seats of our pants, while flipping the bird to "the man" kind of people...but considering the extra distance, and therefore time, needed to get from PSR to the eye candy of DV... there's gotta be some kind of plan, right?
Truthfully, I just don't want to miss any excursions that might be on the books. We'll definitely be there Friday. What time on Friday, and what day we'll be leaving, is still up for grabs.
I know there are regular sites the group travels, like Rhyolite, but if we can get a game plan out there, I can then work in the side trips for myself and anyone who wants to tag along. Places like Racetrack Playa, Wildrose charcoal kilns, Ballarat...etc. Racetrack is really the only long haul excursion I have in the works...the rest are easily accessible by anyone, in any vehicle, on any time frame. I'd like to throw in a trip to the Striped Butte and the Geologist cabin, but that's a 6hr round trip from Furnace Creek!

We haven't put an offical itinerary together yet. (still thinking)
Other than our requisite group campground shennanigans and meals nothings been planned.
DV is about the same in size as Delaware.
Time and distances between places never gives us enough opportunity to see it all.
I haven't ventured out into the western regions of the park before and really want to explore it and those "hot springs" in the Saline Valley too!.
(check out the video)
Richelle and I are looking to do the following..
* Find the U2 Joshua Tree plaque
* View from Aguereberry Point
* Visit Wildrose Charcoal Kilns
* Hang out at Ballarat Ghost Town
* See Darwin Falls
* Explore Saline Valley
* Spend a day soaking at Saline Valley Warm Springs

We'de kinda like to do Racetrack but it would be an all day trek from PSR via Stovepipe Wells to Ubehebe Crater.
And we'll chicken out on that if the road's all chewed up.
Legioss 01-03-2012, 11:46 PM Speaking only for myself, I would like to do Titus since I missed it last year, and maybe do Ballarat instead of Rhyolite, since we DID see Rhyolite last year. Although, I do want to head over to Beatty at some point.

Beatty, Rhyolite and Titus are all on the same stretch of road in my book...and in that order to boot! Cheap gas in Beatty, I'm definitely gonna fill up there! Ballarat is only 1hr south of PSR and you actually pass it if you make the trip into DV via Trona.

Day 2. Ballarat Ghost Town, U2 Joshua Tree Hunt, Wildrose Charcoal Kilns and Aguereberry Point.
Day 3. One full day to explore the Saline Valley via Saline Valley Road, soak at the hot springs, and check out the nearby salt lake.
Our Group Camp Site has a small stage with power for a P/A System. (Hmmmm.. I wonder what we can do with that?) ;-)
Live Music? Guest DJ? Big Screen Wii Bowling or a Death Valley version of West Side Story peformed by the EOC Bad Actors Guild?

I actually have never cooked Chili! Might be a good time to start as we are going West in a few days (from Big Bend, Texas) instead of East... Kind of typical in our Life. East just did not feel right... It gives us a month to get there...
I have cooking stuff, including a pressure cooker. Will cook some of course.
Maybe chocolate chips/marshmallows stuffed banana wrapped in foil and thrown on coals for dessert? It's always a winner with a spoon...
Yes, expect cold. Catalytic heater.
Nice campground. Expect the generator to run as always 24/7 as they are off the grid but the noise I am sure will be swallowed easily. They do have wifi but they ask you not to use it and shut it down when they see too much usage. Cells do not work, I will have a SAT phone I always carry if anyone wants needs to use it. Have a SPOT also for emergency.
Yes, I would like to do Titus again... my video memory card ran out of space as we were entering the best part!!! We might ride the hack...

Elemen-O-P 01-05-2012, 10:54 AM Just had a chat with my co-driver, and it looks like we might be arriving Thursday, late afternoon/early evening, and leaving early Monday.
The Saline Valley hot springs look fantastic, but that's a helluva drive as well! 3.5hrs one way via Hunter mountain (possible closures) and 4.5hrs via 190-395-Big Pine! After all that driving, I'm sure a soak in the springs is just what someone needs...oh, just an FYI, clothing is optional at the hot springs.
My co-driver and I are willing to do road recon for Racetrack, since we'll be in the Raptor and this is a must see for us on this campout. I'm under the impression that the road is maintained well enough by park service, its just the hazards of sharp rocks and washboard conditions, that turn a lot of people around. So we're planning on airing down to approx. 20-30psi and blasting down the road fast enough to cut the drive time from Ubehebe, in half. 3.5hrs from PSR to Racetrack... pish... we'll see about that!!
I will be toting an air compressor, cans of fix-a-flat and recovery gear... just in case anybody (including myself) gets too adventurous for their own good. I'm also planning on bringing about 4 bundles of firewood from the grocery store, to add to the "visible from space" bonfire.
Miss Ellie & Co. 01-05-2012, 11:54 AM Paul, I think there's a shorter route to Saline Valley Hot Springs from 190 via Pananmint Springs Resort.
I'll check that out.
From Highway 190 near Panamint Springs Resort, turn north on Saline Valley Road (towards Lee Flats Joshua Trees)
Stay left when pavement ends, turn right at Big Tire.
Elemen-O-P 01-05-2012, 12:26 PM Yea.. that's the 3.5hr route. Sure its only 67miles, but you have to consider the NPS speed limits (whether they're enforced or not) and the fact that 90% of the trip is graded/washboard road. Plus, the Saline road route, takes you partially up Hunter mountain, which may or may not be closed due to snow or other conditions.
Here's what the NPS says about Death Valley.
Speed Limits
• The maximum speed on paved park roads is 35 mph unless otherwise posted.
• The maximum speed on dirt roads is 25 mph unless otherwise posted
• The speed limit for the 50 yards approaching and leaving all entrance stations is 15 mph.
Variations from the speed limit designations in the general regulations have been made where road conditions allow either a higher speed without jeopardizing public safety, or require a lower speed limit for public safety and to prevent road deterioration.

Miss Ellie & Co. 01-05-2012, 07:53 PM Paul - Nice vids.
Saline Valley Road looks doable for Elements with All Terrain Tires (which rules out most of us) and it's a 6 hr juant (to and from) so it doesn't make sense as a day trek. The drive to the Hot Springs is an overnight to be sure. Why go there and not stay for a day or two?
Not on this trip for us but perhaps we could plan something out for next year or another time.
You'll have your Raptor and there's nothing stopping you (cept maybe gas) from scouting it out for us on your own.
If you arrive on Thursday and are willing to take on a couple passengers, Richelle and I might like to be your back seat drivers for any of your big truck AWF ROAD juants.
Racetrack via Hunter Mountain certainly looks to be real 4WD only.
Element wise - from PSR it's a long drive to Racetrack via Ubehebe Crater and not everyone will want to do it. (which is OK too)
I wonder how much time will peeps want to actually spend driving long distances inside the park after driving four hours from home just to get there?
But hey! We're gonna have tons fun no matter what and where we go.
I think I'll be spending alot of time around camp and while in Beatty, stop at Bailey's Hot Springs for a soak and the Stage Coach Casino to loose a roll of quarters.
Other than that I'm inclined to keep it more local.
But that's just me. :-)
Mels E 01-05-2012, 10:01 PM On post 53 I have some articles about Saline Valley, it does look appealing and one can camp there - perhaps next year to factor in.
So glad to hear Ric is coming and Paul + family.

Miss Ellie & Co. 01-06-2012, 10:29 AM Nice post Beemerchef and you're a Chef to boot! Yeeha!
"We want you in our Chili Cook Off !"
Seriously, you should really try to make this camping trip.
Guaranteed great time!
Be well... Ara and Spirit

We certainly hope you arrive at DV in time for the meet.
I'm happy that you've taken up the challenge to enter our Chili Cook Off.
(we always award our winner with some sort of completely stupid prize for they're efforts)
The only requirement is you must give a name to your chili. Other than that, no rules and anything goes!
Richelle and I enjoyed your Titus Canyon youtube video alot!
Especially your sidecar, shotgun riding, canine sidekick Spirit. Love his helmet and goggles!
What a hoot!
There will be other camp dogs at the meet ~ Spirit will enjoy the company.
Looking forward to meeting you guys.

I tend to shy away from the long hauls inside the park as well... why is it that DV's rarely seen REALLY COOL stuff, is always soo damn far away!!?? We ARE doing Racetrack though, whether over the mountain or around the crater (15min difference according to Google)...we'll get there. Anybody who wants to tag along, is welcome.
The Raptor's back seat is open to anybody who wants to hop in. With hip and legroom galore, it should feel like home to anybody who's ever ridden in the E... plus you get the added bonus of a true ROLL DOWN window, so you can do your best Basset Hound impression out the window.

Excellent!!! Alex and I love that drink.. So glad your bringing the stuff for it!!
I wish we were able to bring our element, some of these drives sound like a lot of fun. I am always up for taking her offroad as far as I can push it! I have excellent off road tires and I love getting my moneys worth :)
Paul- Pencil us in for any time the Raptors rear seat is available for any off-road excursions. It looks like you have more reservations than the campsite itself!
jdiane 01-09-2012, 04:22 PM Looks like we are in for arrival on Thurs, leave on Saturday. :-) I got the time off work and Melissa promises she wont be too bogged down in teaching (though I'm sure she'll be studying in the E while we par-tay ). I'm hoping to spend Thursday at Manzanar and scouting out Lone Pine and environs for a possible summer/spring run up the 395. Darwin falls area and panamint dunes is on the top of my list for Friday. There is simply too much to see and too much space inbetween to see it all in DV.

Dog Owned 01-11-2012, 10:07 PM What's the itinerary for this campout?
Wildrose charcoal kilns (http://www.nps.gov/deva/historyculture/charcoalkilns.htm)
Ballarat ghost town (http://www.desertusa.com/mag99/apr/stories/ballarat.html)

Paul,
We are wanting to see the Racetrack, Ballarat, too...AND we missed Titus last year like Scott did. Count us in!
BTW, it would be good for us and Alex and Randy to kinda work some of this out because we are all still staying at Furnace Creek in the cabins (30-40 minutes away from Panamint)!!!

Wow... that's a bummer we'll all be so spread out! :-( Understandable though, since the four of you will be carpooling... no space for camp gear on the plane or in the E!
Ballarat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballarat,_California), Titus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titus_Canyon), Rhyolite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhyolite,_Nevada), Wildrose Charcoal kilns (http://digital-desert.com/death-valley-history/wildrose-kilns.html), Aguerberry point (http://digital-desert.com/aguereberry-point/)... all easily accessible and within a reasonable amount of time. Racetrack is going to take an entire day, but isn't exclusive to the moving rocks. We've also got Ubehebe crater (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubehebe_Crater) to walk around if we feel compelled, as well as Teakettle Junction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teakettle_Junction,_California), where me might just have to leave our mark. Theres also the Lost Burro mine (http://www.panamintcity.com/cottonwood/lostburromine.html) just around the corner from Teakettle, that might be worth looking into.
Anybody that plans to participate in the Racetrack run needs to make sure their E is up to snuff. Good tires, preferably a non OE set of all terrains, and in good mechanical order. Flats are the regular out there, so a spare is needed, possibly even a can or two of fix-a-flat. As stated before, I'll have these items on hand for anybody who needs them, as well as an air compressor for flats or if anybody decides to air down (a good trick to reducing your chances of a flat). Racetrack is REMOTE, so extra supplies will be needed in case of emergency. Radios will be a must for this trip, and one MAJOR rule of off-roading....Never let the car behind you, leave your sight in your rearview mirror. If they stop, you stop, and so on and so forth all the way up to the lead vehicle.
We may have to share our back seats for this one...its a good thing we all get along so well!!
Here's a good gathering spot for everyone from PSR and Furnace Creek, before heading off to Beatty, Rhyolite, and Titus. RSVP 1 for an empty back seat. My E has to many issues to risk more (although I caused most of them).
Miss Ellie & Co. 01-12-2012, 12:25 PM The major topic of interest at last Monday night’s Camp Chat’s was “cold weather” and how best to deal with it.
We don’t know yet exactly how cold it will get at night. (February 16th is still a ways off)
According to NOAA ( National Oceanic Atmospheric Association - our official weather source) current temps at Panamint Springs Resort are in the mid to high 30’s overnight.
We’re hoping it won’t be any colder by February but people are making preparations with that in mind.
People in tents will be using non flammable catalytic propane heaters.
Endless amounts of sleeping bags, quilts and thermal undies are in order and having one or more dogs with you while sleeping is a highly touted, additional source of warmth.
However, care should be taken to avoid dogs getting into left over chili table scraps prior to bedtime.
.
Not having seen it yet, the small Stage at the group camp site is being nominated to be the central meeting spot for group activities and entertainment as it has a power hook up.
Back to the weather.. at the higher elevations and ski resorts in the Sierras there’s hardly any snow to speak of.
There is lots of man made stuff but real snowfall hasn’t accumulated into much if anything so far this winter.
This time last year the Sierras were buried in a record snow fall, l this year it’s the complete opposite.
Even more shocking are the Sierra Nevada mountain passes which at this time of year are always closed by snow.
So far that hasn’t happened.
Ebbetts Pass (Hwy 4) 8,730 ft. Monitor Pass (Hwy 89) 8,314 ft. Tioga Pass (Hwy 120) 9,943 ft. Sonora Pass (Hwy 108 ) 9,624 ft.
are all open to vehicle traffic..
What that means to us remains unclear as the month of February is always the wettest but if the current El Nina weather cycle continues (and its predicted that it could)
then balmy days and chilly but comfortable nights could be in store for us at DV.
jdiane 01-12-2012, 01:51 PM People in tents will be using non flammable catalytic propane heaters.
Endless amounts of sleeping bags, quilts and thermal undies are in order and having one or more dogs with you while sleeping is a highly touted, additional source of warmth.
Don't forget a good closed-cell foam sleeping pad like this (http://www.rei.com/product/804326/therm-a-rest-ridge-rest-solar-sleeping-pad) because you want a layer of insulation between you and the ground, not just on top of you. Inflatable pads are going to feel colder than foam, and the ground is what you need to insulate yourself against.
That digital-desert.com site that Paul linked to earlier is really cool. I already found a few places to add to my itinerary for this trip!
Elemen-O-P 01-12-2012, 02:16 PM How many are tenting/trailering this trip? My friend and I will be utilizing our Sylvansport trailer... so we'll be outside the corral fence, just wondering if anybody will be joining us on the outskirts.
As for weather...if things get too cold we could all go huddle up with Alex, Randy, John and Tonya, in their toasty cabins in Furnace Creek!!
Damn I'm getting excited about this trip!! It feels like forever since I've seen everybody, and I'm even more excited to meet new people!!!
Miss Ellie & Co. 01-12-2012, 06:24 PM Not too far east of Panamint Springs Resort on US 395 is Lone Pine and behind that are the Alabama Hills.
Countless B movie Westerns and TV shows were filmed here.
It's a half day round trip to the foothills of the Sierras and you can gas up in Lone Pine.

bikerjosh 01-12-2012, 09:50 PM Geeze, you guys are finally venturing into my part of DV. Ballart, Saline Valley(oh yes the hot springs), Pannimint Springs (you all should do the Darwin Falls Hike) and China Springs if you access from Darwin. BTW- Found the plaque from "Joshua Tree" last year (if you want the Lat/Lon #'s ping me). For those that are going to spend anytime in Lone Pine, I highly recommend looking for the Arch. Very cool, actually my EOC avatar.
It is with a heavy heart I have to admit we'll miss the trip this year. I was out there at least the west part of the park the first week of November awesome weather, clear but cool.
BTW-Kristen and I won't be there because we're (or rather Kristen) is expecting in first week of March. Wish I could say it was luck, but at our age it's about science and $. LOL
Have fun, we'll see you next time.

Also, you were asking all if they are bringing tents or what. We are doing our 2nd story sleeping quarters, but this time with lots of blankets. Last year I remember we forgot most of the blankets and it was Glen that had extra's. That will not happen again!

Either on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning Richelle and I are heading to Lone Pine from PSR for gas and more firewood. On the way back to camp check out Alabama Hills and "The Arch". Another stop at U2 Joshua Tree plaque and pay homeage. Then we'll stop at Darwin Falls and wind up back at PSR.

Your Four Runner is looking formidable.
So how are you with Jeeps? Just bought a 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited 4WD V8.
Very nice condition.
It came with a nice set of street tires that are totally unsuitable for off road trail drives at DV.
Replaced the original OEM shocks with some Ranchos - still need me some BFG's
The Jeep has never been off road. Occasional ski trips to the mountains but really nothing beyond that.
This time next year it will be primed and ready for some serious Off Road adventures.
