Hi, I own the 4WD Ex model.
at 3k one of the Tires blew out. I was in a rural area and could not find the same exact brand tire to match with the other tires.
So the tire store gave me a different tire and assured me that everything would be fine because they measured it with a tape measure and it was teh same size.
Someone told me that they could void my warranty because I haev done that!!? Is that true?
I am at 9000 now and my check engine light comes on!!! Few flases after I start the car.
Woudl the computer record if the AWd system has been engaged foir soem reason? Should I chaneg that one tire back? (it is installed ijn thback)
Should I be afrid of going to the dealer for fering losing my warranty?
Thanks so much for your response.

I don't see how having a mismatched tire on th rear could cause a problem. Is the light maybe the "maint reqd" light reminding you to get your oil changed? Even if the oil has been changed, the light was likely not reset.

1) The tires need to be the same size - and that's all. If the new tire is a 215/70R16 then you're set. If the tread pattern is too different you may experience minor drivability problems due to differences in grip under the most extreme conditions, but beyond that it's a shoulder-shrug.

2) You would have been unable to match the exact tire and model even if you were in a big city ('cept maybe buying from a Honda dealer). The factory buys custom-manufactured tires by the boxcar load. They may be a familiar brand and maybe even have a "normal" model name, but they will be different than anything you could buy from a regular tire store.

3) The "Maintenance Required" light is not the "Check Engine" light. It is a reminder more along the lines of your mother nagging at you to clean your room. If you have changed the oil or had the "10,000 mile" service already done, then the procedure to turn this light off is in the owner's manual.

There was a link to a post on the CRV forum recently that contradicts this statement, Mike: a 3rd party tire manufacturer had a make/model/measurement tire line they sold...but even at the same measurement, they had 3 physically different tires, depending upon what vehicles you were installing them on.

The CRV owner had a shop install one on the front and was having RTAWD problems. He finally measured it and found that, even though the printed measurements matched his stock tires, the physical measurements threw him out of the 2.5% wiggle room built into the AWD system.

He had the tire swapped for the same make/model/size specifically made for the CRV which solved the problem.

It seems to me this is more of a problem with a particular manufacturer taking some artistic license (read "marketing license") on tire sizing, but just a warning that it can happen.

That's not "marketing license", that's a safety issue. I believe that tire sizing is regulated by NHTSA/USDOT. That's straight mis-sizing, plain and simple, and the complaint should have gone upstairs.

It is possible that some brands may be under-sizing so they can knock a couple of dollars off the end-user price. Considering all the recent angst/debate about tire sizing, company execs facilitating this should be taken out and shot. But that's just my feeling.

>I am just worried that they void my warranty, ...

You worry too much. Whoever told you that replacing a tire would void the warranty simply has no clue. It's entirely a routine maintenance/service issue, and that you knew enough to take the extra precaution to verify that the rolling circumference matched, so much the better.

Don't sweat it.
