There are dozens of ways of sending power to all 4 wheels of a car. To put is simply 4wd or 4x4 tends to be used for the traditional version that is good off-road, but can't be used on highways. AWD tends to be used for a version that can operate all the time, but might not be so good off-road. But check the link for a fuller description; the lines between the terms are becoming more and more blurred.
