I am a big fan of the Apple iPods. However if you need an MP3 player for your Element you might consider the Rio Nitrus. I found it small and easy to mount. I used Velcro (see photo). You can mount it at any angle you want.
I just dismount the Nitrus from the Velcro when I am not driving and throw it in the glove box. Second, since is has a 16 hour battery life ( I usually get a little more than 14) I don’t even power it from the my Element. It is smaller than even the iPod Mini at 3.2” X 2.5” X 0.7” with a Weight 2.75 oz. While it only holds 1.5 Gigs of songs, I find that 300+ songs is more than enough for me. Third, since it uses one button for navigation I like the tactile feel that allows me to keep an eye on the road. Fourth, at a street price of $145, it is a good deal.
I use a 1 ft, Radio Shack mini-to-mini plug cable to connect mine.
Down sides are As the moment the Nitus only works with Windows based PCs. It does not have as much capacity as the iPod Mini or iPods . (Please if anyone discovers a USB driver for the Mac – you’d make my day—please let me know. My understanding is the Apple has bee less than cooperative in allowing the appropriate USB driver to be made for this competitor.) Finally while you can make play lists, you must do it on your host computer, not the player .
BTW:Thanks to all who post your advice has been very helpful in equipping my new E!
