The ball and chain and I got in the car tonight, closed the doors and presto, they locked. What's up with that?

Did you have the keys & attached remote in your back pocket? Did the act of sitting down activate the lock button?

No, I definitely had them in my hand and might have put them in the ignition already.

Huh. Coulda been similar to my dummy move this past weekend:

I'd pulled out from the beach house and was heading to the main drag. Coming up on a stop sign, I shifted in my seat and reached to adjust the radio. Suddenly the gas pedal wasn't doing anything, and, while I was going about 5mph, the brakes were stiff.

I was like, what the hell?

Noted the dash was dead. Turned down the stereo and noticed the engine wasn't running. Moved the shifter to neutral. Turned the keys...click. Turned some more...ignition.

Ah...

See, I had so many damn keys (added a few for the trip) that when I shifted to reach the stereo, I kicked the keys...and the weight...turned...the...key...to....accessory position.

Replace the "knee into the key" with "knee into the remote"... ?

I know that when I hold my ignition key both the key ring and the remote are tucked between my last three fingers and the palm of my hand...so they aren't just bouncing around.

My guess is that after you put the key in and were turning on the ignition, the pressure of your hand turning the key pushed something (another key maybe) against the remote and it triggered the lock. I have done that once...and it startled me too!

Have had similar experiences with My dad's Cadillac. Don't know what causes it but occasionally will have the doors lock on me for no reason. Not much of an issue except that the alarm is wired to the door locks, I think. Thus when the doors lock and the car isn't started tha alarm would set. I suspect that has something to do with the transmitter, an errant hit of a button, radio interference...

Another possibility that I can think of is, if the keys might have been in the ignition, did you touch the shifter at all? Again with the Cadillac, and some other cars, they automatically lock the doors when the gear shift is engaged. All you might have to do is nudge the shifter to activate the switch. Does the Element do this? You can then unlock the doors with the door lock button but most recent cars I have driven auto lock when you put in gear. Not sure exactly what was going on but a Chrysler Minivan that I rented recently, it seemed, would lock, when the vehicle was actually in motion. About 15 seconds or so after I would drive away I would hear the locks click. I guess some sort of safety measure to assure that someone couldn't accidentally open the doors while in motion. To open a door you would have to concsiously unlock the doors.

No, not with the stock Honda OEM keyless system.

If you've installed the stock Honda OEM alarm system it *might* do this but not in the same way. That is, it doesn't do it as a courtesy feature once you are on the way. You can only get that feature using an aftermarket alarm or module.

The honda alarm has two settings, standard and extra-security (I'm blanking on the exact terminology). If you have it set to auto-lock/auto-arm mode it will auto-lock/auto-arm, but it would be something like 30 seconds after you closed all of the doors w/o putting the keys in the ignition. Typically this only happens after you've left the vechile, hence it being the "extra-security" setting.

I had the same thing happen once. Also, I do not think that I had hit the remote buttons. I chalked it was as an "Element brain fart" no reason just happened.

could be because you started out your comment with

"The BALL & CHAIN and I"

no good can come of this,,,,
unless you like the fry pan to smoothen out the hair on the back of your head, and remember when you get kicked outta bed that night and you have to sleep on the sofa,
for us guys it's like camping out with the luxury of a fridge and tv (oppps don't let the girls know that   )

Amen to couch camping. The B&C doesn't read this forum so I'm not too worried. And despite my crude terminology I'm a full time puppy dog / love slave so I'm not too worried :^)

I'm starting to agree with those who see an inadvertant button press as the root cause.

Dear Gents and Ladies,

I have had the same darn experience with my AUTO-LOCKING DOORS =) And wondered about it for some time untill I found out! IT IS YOUR ELBOW ON THE DOOR THAT CAUSES IT. I would put my hand out the window and accidentally push my door lock down (driver side only!) and VUALA...all doors are now locked. I was like wtf? How the hell am I locked inside? Then I caught it. You are just pushing without knowing the driver side door lock down and it causes all doors to lock automatically =)
