I'm curious to see how many E owners have iPods and what kind of iPod they have...

I just got a green mini iPod for my birthday and I think it is SO wonderful!

Now I can't wait to team it up with my E!

(That's what the Totoro cartoon Avatar is... Big grey, little green!)

I think I am getting an Ipod for my birthday.

If I am right, it'll be awesome to use it in my car. So many mp3s on my computer ready to be played in my E

I've had a 3rd gen. 15G iPod for about a year. Got 1367 songs at the moment, taking up almost 6G. It's a lean and mean library as I delete songs all the time by the criteria "will I ever want to hear that song again?" Not so much the completist any more.

Space is at a premium at the moment as I also use it as a backup for my TiBook. Gotta either get another firewire drive, or a bigger iPod. ;)

i use my 3g 15gb ipod anytime i'm driving more than an hour or so.

i hook it in using a Sik Imp, which powers it, and takes the audio out of the dock connection (with a little connector wire into the AUX). better quality audio that way than going out of the headphone port.

I've got a 10GB 3G iPod with 1900 songs on it. I just installed it in my E today with a Seidio iMount. I had to futz with it a bit to get it to work the way I wanted it, but it works just fine.

I use my XM for most day to day driving and leave it in my E. I use my iPod on trips and longer drives. I am going to D/L some books from iTunes for my trip to So. Carolina at the beginning of next month.

3G 40GB Ipod.

I was wondering the other day if there was a correlation between Apple users and Element owners. You might think so considering the emphasis on unique design for both product lines.

7512 songs, 20.5 days, 31.53GB

(That does incude a bunch of "needle drop" generic tracks [Freeplay Music] which are fun when they pop up in shuffle mode.)

Also includes "29 Live!" from Magic Cordoba...BEATBOX' band.

Last week while suffering from some really awful insomnia, I downloaded an audio book from audible.com. IT'S GREAT! I love how the iPod bookmarks where you are even after you leave the book and then go to music and back to the book.

My DH and I finished up the book on a short driving trip, and it was fantastic. I plan on getting more audio books as well for the little green. (since no tape player in the E... I have a lot of books on tape that will have to be laid to rest. )

On a happier note, I can't wait to ditch my iTrip. What a pain in the arse.

I have a 2Gen 20GB iPod that I purchased right when Apple released the iPods for PCs. Love it and can never part with it. :D

What really pushed me to get the E was because they had an auxillary jack for use with an MP3 player and that really sold me on the E. Have never looked back since. :)

I am running XP and iTunes and have had no problems whatsoever. I've recently upgraded to the newest version of iTunes and that's gone very smoothly as well.

IMO, the iPod is one of the slickest pieces of hardware I've ever owned, and it's even selling me on getting a MAC as my next computer. (It's that "pulled together")

I just love it!

The wife has a pink iPod mini, I have a 3rd generation 20 gigger.

We use both of them in the Element.

I replaced the head unit in the other car to get a front panel aux in jack. The aux in jack on the Element is one of the things that brought us into the showroom.

I bought the generic cell phone mount from Radio Shack and it holds either one beautifully.

Oh yeah, redorange, the iPod was the beginning of my slippery slope to mac-dom.

I'm a PC server dude by employment and have built my share of PCs for personal use. I've got PC parts all over the house.

At work we started down the Linux path about 3 years ago. I have the bulk of the linux servers in my area. Background, I'm a PC guy that also knows Linux...

I bought an iPod. I saw someones Mac running OS X. I was hooked. I bought an iBook to go with the iPod. 3 months later I sold the iBook on eBay and bought a 12" powerbook when they came out.

Last September I bought my dual G5 and I absolutely love it. The stuff just WORKS. Games on the dual G5 rock... Halo, UT2004...

To top it all off, there's nothing that I can't do with the mac while I'm on-call for work. VPN client, ibm3270 emulator, vncviewer, Remote desktop, rdesktop, exported X sessions over the VPN link, etc...

I've helped a friend in Milwaukee get a 12" powerbook and she's never looked back. She was sick and tired of the virus/exploit/spyware-de-jour. Blaster was the final straw for her.

Some people talk about "iPod Killers" that are out there, but they really cannot compete with the style of the iPod. It is original and very slick. Only drawback that I really have is the battery life, but I've learned to deal with that one and they now have battery replacements for the iPod which is great.:D

The 12" iBook is DEFINATELY on my list.

The only reason I've been with PC so long is that I use AutoCAD for my job, but for home use, I'm going to make the switch, it's just a question of when.

Actually, that's not a question... it's all about when I can get my hands on some $$$ and talk DH into it. (Esp. after buying a new E)

Just bought a Ipod mini silver and I have to say it is the most user friendly controls of all the players I looked at. As far as software issues I had no problem setting it up and loading it. I also bought the dock and a patch cord and monday will design and fab the perfect holder for it in the E, not sure what kind of metal to make it out of. Here's the choices--mill finish alum--brushed stainless steel--regular finish stainless steel--white alum--or some dark green painted steel.
Will post pics.

brushed stainless is a favorite finish of mine... I use it a lot in my designs.

No wait, Circuit City had one on the shelf. The people that worked there didn't even know it was there or they would have bought it.

I found some fibertite metal that has rubber on one side and galvanized on the other and going to use it. I made 2 prototypes (1 mill & 1 fibertite) and am working on the final product. The regular metal was trying to scratch the Ipod while putting it in and taking it out of the bracket. If you like I can post a pic of the prototype.

Here is a pick of it installed. I tried to dye the side of the metal thats rubber but it didn't come out as dark as I would have liked but o'well. The placement of it is perfect. The main objective was to position it in such a way as to tune it without taking your eyes off the road, and all it cost me was time and a bottle of light green dye :D
The mini slides in right to left and I put a hole in the top of the bracket for the patch cord which acts as a stopper to hold the unit in. The metal I used is great, rubber on one side to prevent scratches and now sanded silver finish on the other side, and as far as the metal goes its thicker than the body panels so it won't move around while tunning.

I just love the way cotton put it on page one of this thread. I bought a 20 gig 2nd generation iPod the week before the 3rd generation was released, specifically because I like the original control layout. (Interestingly enough, the iPod mini goes back toward that design, and away from the four buttons in-a-row control layout.) And again, like cotton, I thought of an Element as the "mobility" option for my iPod; rather than my iPod being the "music" option for my Element.

In addition to carrying around 3500 songs (I now have to shuffle playlists to suit my whim of the day) typically, I also love it for the iCal and Address Book features. I don't even program phone numbers into my cell phone anymore. It's simpler to look them up on my iPod and "dial" them, than it is to go through the steps to get them through my cell phone phonebook! What's more, all that information only needs to be entered one time - the easy way - on my Mac keyboard. And if I weren't such a miser, I'd have a more Mac-friendly cell phone.

I have yet to have a battery issue, and my foolish notion is that when the time eventually comes to replace the battery, I'll be sorely tempted to also "transplant" a 40 gig drive and keep my old case! My son tells me I'm insane, but that's no news either.

Like others here, I also use Windows machines at the office, but why would I want to deal with that nightmare on my own time? People laugh, but WordPerfect 5.1 is actually just fine for the tasks we use it for in the office. I don't mind at all helping others with configuring or learning their Mac's, but thankfully, I only "know" enough Windows and Windows-base software and hardware to do my job. Any more than that would be like knowing how to remove your fingernails with a pair of pliers, but why would you want to!?

Actually, in many ways I'm less fond of OSX than I was of the original Mac OS schemes, but will admit that it's resemblance to Windows at least makes "switching" less intimidating than it used to be in the past. I don't like paying Apple prices, but since the products just plain work right, I find it pointless to pick nits.

We just had a mini-road trip this weekend, and I purchased an audiobook from audible.com for the ride. It was great! And not having to use that P.O.S. "iTrip" was HEAVEN! I forgot how much I like audiobooks for long trips...

The mini is cool too because it bookmarks the place where you leave off in the book, even if you go and play music and then come back to the book.

Both iTunes and audible.com seemed to have a good selection of books to choose from, and the prices were less than if you bought one off the shelf at B&N or Borders.

LMNT 47

I got my Element in Sept, my daily commute was 3 miles, but I've racked up 16,000 in road trips since then.

Books from Audible.com are a given on the road. If you sign up on their site vs. iTunes you can pay $20 a month for any two books. Ten dollars for a new release novel is better than the price at Costco.

I've got about a week's worth ( Seven 24 hour days ) of books queued up now. A bit more and I'll suspend my subscription for a while.

I do use the iTrip though. When you're 10 hours into a 12 hour book it's nice to listen to the end after you arrive at your destination. Using the iTrip you can play the book in a hotel room via the clock radio. The iTrip also works if you happen to fly somewhere and have a rental car. If the car has a cassette though, I think a cassette adapter would be better for casual use. I had a hell of a time finding an unused FM freq in NYC back in April.

LMNT 47 - I agree with you about the iTrip. I find it handy in open spaces, but otherwise, it can be a royal pain. Of course, it does offer way more flexibility in choice of stations than other FM Modulators, but I'd like to have a chat with whomever came up with the cumbersom method of changing frequencies. What a hassle!

I thought 10GB might be too small, but it holds all my songs with 3 Gigs to spare.

The adapter is cool 8) because it provides both power and audio out through the connection port on the bottom of the 3G iPods. Only one cable to connect and disconnect the iPod. :)

More info on the adapter can be had here:

Though you can find it for much cheaper if you hunt around.

Chris - that's the one reason why I am considering going to a new iPod from my original scroll-wheel 10GB - the single line adapter. I hate aving the firewire and the aux cables cluttering things up.

Oh, and not to mention that the newer iPod form factor is so much smaller. I don;t think I'd have much use for a Mini iPod, but something slimmer would be welcome!

That must be sluggish running on a nearly-original iMac. Do you have iTunes on it too?

There are alot of good deals to be had on iPods on eBay, and I believe SmallDog.com has refurbished that won't set you back too much.

Do they make a goose neck mount for the iMac? Do I smell a Photoshop challenge? ;)

I liked the iMacs, but that mouse really annoyed me; a little to much form over function for my tastes. Panther should be pretty snappy on it. OS X has gotten faster with each release, IMO. I resisted upgrading until Jaguar came out, and have not looked back since. Can you say multitasking, protected memory?

I would have preferred doing it myself, but since I was going to be out of town for the weekend, and he had the latest version of Mac OS 10.3.4 (don't ask - don't tell) and he actually wanted to do it for the "fun of it", who was I to resist? (You cannot resist the Borg - you WILL BE assimilated!) That said, I was secretly amused when his own Mac system came to a crashing halt shortly after he installed a wireless keyboard on his own machine so he could surf the web and adjust the volume of his iTunes (playing on some gigantic TV through an ancient Mac 8600 and his 333 MHz 1st rev iMac that I gave him upon his "somehow" graduating high school) from the freakin' sofa! Damn kids!

I, myself, did the original hard drive swap-out on my own iMac without any assistance from him whatsoever, so let the record reflect that I actually CAN do the deed. Back in the day, there were more than a few companies in the twin cities that benefitted from my ability to "crack a Mac" and upgrade the ram or install a video card for an external color monitor than I can count. Then again, from personal exposure, you know the true extent of my own admitted senility, so who knows what the "whole" truth may be?

And though he never lets me forget that I probably paid list price for my immediately-obsolete-the-day-I-bought-it (intentionally) 2nd gen 20 gig iPod, he completely respects my rationale that the original form factor remains "perfect". That, plus the fact that he'll immediately inherit the iPod if I fatally crash my Element. (Remind me to check my brake lines this weekend!)
