I was studying for my Bar Mitzvah in 1974 and great leaders were being killed left and right. I commented to the Cantor giving me instructions that it was looking like the end of civilization or something like that. He replied that when you study history you learn that there was never a time when it didn't look like the end of the world was right around the corner. I've thought about that often in recent days and have shared it with a few younguns who feel now like I felt then.

My best advice is a little more specific. It was given to me by a good friend of my father, who taught me how to work on cars:

"Go ahead and take it to the dealer, Mike, but you're just going to have to fix it again when you get it back home."

After then living through ignoring that advice on a couple of occasions, I got real, real serious about spending many weekends under his tutelage. That advice and the resulting education has saved me tens of thousands of dollars.

Thanks, Keith! 8)

(PS - How good a friend was he? My younger brother was named after him.)

This isn't really advice as much as words to live by. Everything happens for a reason.

I believe that my dad dying 20 years ago, when I was 13, made me a stronger person. If I'd finished college, I would've never met my wife (7 years in July). If my beloved 1970 Chevelle, that my grandma drove off the lot in '70, didn't get run over by a dumptruck, I would'nt have my beloved E! :)

Think about it. . .

The words I try to live by:
"No matter where you go, there you are"

It sounds very silly, but after a few failed attempts during "those college years" to "get away", I finally figured out the meaning of this little ditty! (Yep, been stuck with myself ever since!)

When I introduced this thread I didn't get the responses that I expected. What I did get was serious & some very touching stories.

When someone has reached my age of 69 years you will have been offered a lot of advice .Some of it has been good & some not so good. But when I take the time to think back ,one offer of advice stands out .It was given by a friend now deceased.

We were attending a going away party for a friend going into the Air Force. He was a mutal friend & we were all teenagers. It was held at a large reception hall .When we first entered the hall my buddy Les said "check out that good looking blonde over there." I did as Les advised .I went over to her and introduced myself to everyone sitting at her table .I asked her to dance with me. She accepted my offer .It was a case of love at first sight. We married 2 years later & will celebrate our 50th anniversary next November.

Unfortunately my pal Les never got to see any of this .He was killed in an auto accident shortly thereafter .. As you have read ,some advice is worth the taking..

This was not the best advice given to me but certainly right up there, When reminded of the cat crossing the railroad tracks & having the tip of his tail cut off by a passing trains engine car .He spun around to see what happened & the second rail car cut off his head. I was advised to never lose your head over a piece of tail. From that day on it has worked for me.

Best Advice? "Do or do not, there is no try" Yoda.

Just kidding. Actually, I think this has already been mentioned
somewhere in this thread. Live today as if there is no tomorrow.
Enjoy life to its maximum!

Before January of this year, I would get upset over some of the
stupidest things! Then I had a heart attack and quadruple bypass
surgery and survived!!!! Now I enjoy things like flowers, a nice calm
day and a cold drink of water. I don't worry nearly as much
about petty things, especially those I have no control over.

The best is often by example.

On my first navy cruise at age 20, we had just left San Diego, making good headway. While on the flight deck moving boxes to our spaces below, one of my co-workers, a thirty something chain smoker, hacked up a good dose of smoker's phlegm and spit, only to have blow right back in his face.

Moral of the story: "Never spit into the wind."

Another military man I knew once told me: "The squeaky wheel gets greased. But sometimes it gets replaced."

I took the literal and figurative to learn that you should stand for your beliefs, but know when and how to speak for them.

I actually have two... The first one is taped to the top of my computer monitor -
"Anything worth having is worth working for"
When ever I want to screw off I notice that and go back to work...

The second one nobodys ever told me but I live it and have loved ever minute of it! -
"Live your life so you will have no regrets"

If I am tired but theres somthing fun going on or something I really want to do I think to myself - if I dont go will I regreat not going or if I go would I regret going? Usually I would regreat not going so I go and have had a blast!

The only think I really regret not doing is the National E Meet. But that couldnt be helped. Work and family come first. :)

If it was fun, they would not call it work, AND they would not pay you to do it.

When I was a kid and visited my Grandparent on the farm for a week. My Grandfather took me into the bean fields and we pulled the weeds. He told me....

"Nobody ever got fired for working to hard."

"It is better to have to much than not enough"

and lastly but, mostly important was when my parents were getting divorced and I said something bad about my Dad...

"Youre Dad is my Son and I never want to here you say anything bad about him again"

That was kinda an Emotional moment for me. I told my Grandfather I was sorry. He forgave me. I love both my parents....stuff(I changed this because s__t appears like this **** on this site) Happens. I am Happily married and have 2 Fantasic kids and a Honda Element. Doesn't get much better than this.

My Best Friend died at the age of 21. He left behind a 2 year old son at that time. That was a long time ago but, he always said, Sometimes you just got to say F__k It......" He always told me this when I would worry about work. We went to Tech. School together and both got jobs and were best friends.

I now say "live each day like it is your last!" This may not work for everyone but, It does for me.

My old boss died at 62 years of age. He was a grump but, I liked him anyway. I always told him that life was short. I really wanted to see him enjoy his retirement and see him be able to go hunting with all his hunting buddies.

Man I am sorry for getting so serious.....I should go and get a life....Yippe!

I'd like to add to this: "If you're not offending someone then you're not exercising your freedom of speech." A couple of years ago I heard a Muslim complain "your right to free speech ends at offending someone." While I can understand his point of view (Muslim's have been taking a lot of slack), all I can say is "uh.... no."

ElementMaster wrote: "The Future is Unwritten only you can write it yourself everyday in your word and actions"

I really like that one. It's actually very libertarian (as a philosophy, not a political affiliation). I'm a great believer of making ones own life.

Funktional wrote: "The secret to living a happy life is to live below your means"

I'd like to add to this one, too: "The secret to being happy is not getting what you want, it's wanting what you have." And finally, on this subject, I learned this one from Fight Club, possibly the movie that has made me think more than any other movie, that "your possessions end up possessing you."

And for all those "live for today" quotes; "Live for today, but plan for tomorrow."

Although this is not advice ,it is within the subject of advice. Having lived for almost seventy years I have observed many unusual things. Advice being one of them. People often seek advice but seldom follow the advice given. I would like to have sawbuck for every time someone has asked me for my advice and not utilized it. Then come back and say "I should have listened to your advice " The result is that I seldom offer advice even when solicited . I have had heart surgery and now take a medication named Coumadin.Coumadin in reality is "RAT POISON" and a lot like advice . Rat poison when taken in metered doses can be benificial ,but when taken in large doses can be fatal .A lot like advice.

Bottom line is ,unless you want to kill them with it don't offer it because they "AIN'T GONNA TAKE IT " anyway..

When much younger and discussing retirement planning with an older co-worker I asked, "Jerry, why do you work only part time at your age? Shouldn't you be more motivated to work more and put away as much as possible for your approaching retirement?" Jerry was a very frugal sort of fellow and quite wise, or so it seemed. He lived simply, below his means. He thought for a moment and answered: " Most people run out of time before they run out of money"......
