i have (dealer installed) keyless entry on my '03 EXS - which until this afternoon - whenever i pushed the remote button to lock - the horn would give a short beep - the same was the case for unlocking the doors. suddenly this afternoon - the doors lock and unlock but the horn no longer beeps- however, when i push the lock button on the remote for several seconds, the horn blows until i push the lock button again.

any ideas how to reset it so that it goes back to a short beep when locking and unlocking?????

First replace the battery in the remote, or try the other remote. A low battery could be causing it to send incomplete codes and confusing the receiver.

If that doesn't work, in the under-hood fuse box, remove fuse #9, which is the 10A fuse (red) right in the middle of the box. Wait 15-20 minutes, then replace the fuse and see what happens.

If that doesn't restore things to normal, take it in and get the keyless receiver box replaced under warranty.

tried using the second remote -and the same thing happened - will have to wait until daylight tomorrow to do the fuse thing --

shouldn't there be some kind of visible "control" within the vehicle??

also - according to the owners manual - fuse #9 is for "back up" --???????????

>fuse #9 is for "back up" --???????????

Fascinating. Apparently, the owner's manual conveniently leaves out important information.

This fuse protects: "Audio unit, data link connector (DLC), gauge assembly, immobilizer control unit-receiver, immobilizer indicator, keyless receiver unit, multiplex control unit"

This may be glossed-over in the "civilian" manuals because of the connection to the immobilizer circuits.

Oh - the "audio unit" part of this is your radio memories. You will lose your station settings.

ah ha! - any other ideas why this has happened?? the doors lock and unlock - just don't make the alert horn beep -- i notice there is a steady red LED located next to the cruise control - i don't remember seeing it before today -do you know if that's part of the keyless entry system??

>steady red LED located next to the cruise control

Ruh roh - that's not an officlal location of anything.

By chance... did you also get the factory alarm system? It is possible that the technician decided that taking the steering wheel cover apart (according to the instructions) was just too much trouble for nothing more than putting the LED in a visible location.

Here's a thought... ... are the parking lights flashing once when you lock? If they aren't, it is possible that the rear gate is not closed all the way, or the hood isn't fully latched. If either of these aren't fully closed (esp. with the alarm system), the system will not acknowledge locking with the lights or horn beep. Open and close all doors (and hood), and see if everything then works as expected.

Further thinking is that the LED [i]is the alarm LED, and it's steady on because it's "triggered" due to a door/gate/hood being ajar, and therefore won't arm.

i'm not too sure exactly what i did - but after reading your last post, i went back out to the car - - (having read something on-line about turning the ignition key to on and then off twice within 5 seconds each time clicking the lock button on the remote) and it worked - the horn now gives the alert beep and the red LED is blinking - rather than steady on -- (which is the "valet" mode) --

And there you have it. All I can figure is that you accidentally put it into valet mode. The lack of horn on locking is to remind you of that, apparently.

Unrelated, but related... the only person I know who ever got their car stolen (while I knew them) had it stolen from valet parking. So I find it a bit of a paradox that the least secure mode for the alarm system is a likely theft scenario.

Does the little red light stay on when you lock the doors or does it blink? If it stays on, you are most likely in Valet mode.

after fooling around with it again late last night - i was able to get it back to the alert horn mode when locking and unlocking with the remote -- now the light is blinking -

My name is Gunnar, I am the Element king/fan here at Coleman. I will be getting one of my own soon. I thought that Andy had sold you the car but I guess that I was wrong. I hope that all is going well with your Element.
