I'm new here and just picked up my E yesterday. I've looked through the forum and didn't see this topic discussed as of yet so I figured I'd start it. What kind of pets do you have? My wife and I have two Boston Terriers, a Shar-Pei, and two cats. The Bostons love to go for rides but the Shar-Pei gets car sick but he'll go if he knows he's going someplace cool.

Well, we've got 2 critters runnin' around. We've got Samantha aka. Sammie, a Russian Blue that only responds to "kitty" and when you rub your fingers together (kinda like when you've got some glue on them). And Sweety, our parakeet with attitude problems.

Baxter and Lou-2 cats that just pass in the night...we hardly see either of them, except to eat!

Someday, I will have a horse, another puppy etc, etc.....I would let every stray i came across live me ....hee hee... :o (hubby has other thoughts on this) my critters are one of the main reasons I bought the E-the ease of clean up on the many trips to the vet!!!

BeatBox: That's hysterical!!! I never knew Persi had a brother in Seattle! And such a handsome fella...love the name Othello...is there an Iago in the future? Evidently the weight issue runs in the family. We laugh because Persi is Emma's adopted "little" brother but he weighs in at 16.5 pound...10 more than she does! My husband says Persi's secret identity is a Jazz musician and calls him Fat Man Doo. Fat Man's been on a diet (Doctor's orders) and has lost 2 lbs (I'm very proud of him) We had to screw a plastic food bowl to the top of the cat tower for Emma's regular food...Persi can't climb that high with his "extra baggage" so he has to eat the Iam's weight control that's down on his level. He didn't lose any weight for about two weeks...couldn't figure out why until I caught him with his paw in the Doggie Biscuit Jar. Had to start keeping the lid clamped down on it, and that did the trick!!!

gypsywagon.. that is too funny!! attaching the dish for your other kitten.. since the heavy one can not get up there, that is a hoot.. and you found he had his paws in the treat jar..

the black 'n white cat i had was slender.. so obviously not a realitive.. but they are both very handsome fellows!!

All:

I think I have found my place here! I have lots of babies, six to be exact. I have two dogs, Gracie my new cairn terrier puppy, and Shadow my 10-year old poodle/yorkie mix. I also have 4 cats, including one senior female siamese and three indoor kitties...two female calicos (what else???), and one cream/orange male tabby. All are wonderful and spoiled rotten. Imagine that??? Hope this photo of Gracie in our new E is viewable...I am not catching on to this photo thing. And definitely not catching on to the thumbnail size "Avatar" photos, though I would like to use this pic of Gracie for that. Any help appreciated!

Thanks so very much Happy Camper for the assistance! I couldn't have posted my pics without your help. Everyone on these boards is so nice - I just love it here.

This is another photo of Gracie "playing" with my big black calico cat. The cat's name is Angel (which she is not  !). I call her Miss Big Kitty and she likes that just fine. Believe it or not, Miss Big Kitty actually LOVES playing with the puppy. She is declawed but puts up such a gutsy and fierce "paw-bashing" that none dare stand in her way! She enjoys the battles!

Scout : our Russian Blue cat (My wife rescued her as a kitten. She saw a man in the park hurling something up in the air; about 15 ft. straight up). She yelled at him and he ran away ... leaving Scout breathless but uninjured).
Gateway : Black spots on white. Adopted from Cause for Paws. He was found in an industrial area alley along with his brother. The mother never returned.
Shamu : Black with white patches. Gateway's brother. 'As big as a whale.

Currently the owner of 1 dog (lab/golden retriever cross). Our two cats have my wife and I as staff. Soon to be the owner of an 04 4WD

The cats hate cars - both of them came across the country with us a few years ago and I still have the scars - but the dog is a typical dog, loves to go for rides. She was a barfy puppy but has gotten over that now at 18 monts- thank god.

The E looks like it is just so functional for animals. However, I am sure I will constantly be cleaning up nose prints, tongue trails and slobber from the windows. We will probably have the rear seats up most of the time so the dog can have the whole back of the vehicle (as if we had any choice - she weighs 80 lbs -the dog not my wife).

How do you keep them out of the front (again, dogs not wives)? Don't say get a better trained dog! Are there any gates/barriers available to block the front two seats?

CSK
10-04-2004, 02:01 PM
Keegan (the newf puppy from above) has quickly passed 80 lbs and is still climbing. He'll end up about 150-170. For now, he still is comfortable sitting behing the front seats and in front of the back seats. That allows me to still be able to put things behind the back seats that I don't want sliding around, or that I want to keep him out of. Unless your 80lb puppy is much bigger than mine, you'll be fine with the seats down.

A Golden Retriever, Ambi, a Tonkinese (Siamese/Burmese cross) SoShi (she is very, very shy), and a Tabby (aka alley cat) named Cheers because as a kitten she showed up at ****tail time. They all get along wonderfully and are great companions.

New member here, haven't bought one yet, but am in the process. The reason for the Element, or for whatever car I get, IS the dogs! I'm driving a 2dr Ford Escort (was a company car) and have 3 greys! It looks like a clown car when I'm taking them anywhere. I'm in the Chicago area, and have seen many Elements around. I almost bought a Scion (for price and gas mileage) but just didn't like what I saw. If it wasn't for the gas mileage issue, I would have gone with an Element without hesitation.

My kitties are indoors all the time so thankfully I don't have to worry about some loony slaughtering Elvis during Halloween. I don't know what's going to happen with the strays I see running around outside this Halloween, of the 5 I see on a regular basis, 3 of them are all black. I haven't had any luck getting close to them to pet them, let alone picking them up, so hopefully they'll run away from anyone else during that time of the year.

My old faithful is named Barclay (after the old brand of cigarettes--I used to smoke). He was a rescued animal at the local humane society when I picked him up nearly 13 years ago. He was terribly skinny, terrorized by gloves and any long pole pointed in his direction, and chewed wood trim (#@$%!). Fortunately, over time, and with loving care, good diet and stability, he is now a great protector, loyal companion and very healthy for his age.

Two years ago, when Barclay looked like he was fading fast, we bought two Collie puppies, a brother (Caesar) and sister (Sophie) (yes, we were told that is not a good idea, oh well, it all worked out). They are tri-collor rough (long-heaired) Collies. After we got them, Barclay perked up, perhaps sensing the writing on the wall, and is now healthier than he was two years ago.

We have only taken the "kids" for a ride once, though, because as tall as the Collies are, it doesn't work so well to just put the back seats down. We needed to hook them up to the sides, and then there are the cutouts in the floor to seat the back seats. Ouch! That looks like a recipe for a broken ankle or leg. For that one ride, we took out the cargo mat from our Isuzu Rodeo to protect the dogs. This past weekend, I bought a "cargo mat kit" at the local auto parts store which can be cut to size. Its a soft rubbery materal, which when cut to the size of the space, I'll be able to roll over those two cutouts, saving my dogs from possible injury.

I have two Border Collies, Solo and Fly (no, I did not name them after a theme) and a Papillon, Skeeter (yes, Skeeter is named Skeeter partly because Fly is named Fly). Solo is my agility dog, hobby sheepdog, and strong silent soulmate type dog; Fly is my imported sheepdog trial dog, dabbling in flyball dog, and all around good time gal; and Skeeter is my small auxiliary dog, training to be my small agility dog.

No . . . but he's REAL happy when we do the Taco Bell drive-thru!! Seriously, the real Taco Bell dog is named Gidget. She's a little smaller (8 lbs.) than Biscuit, although they look similar.

An advertising exec. "discovered" Gidget while she was prancing along Venice Beach. So, I take The Bisque on regular bike rides around Mission Beach. You never know!!

An interesting note: neither Gidget nor Biscuit could ever appear in an AKC dog show. The maximum size allowed by the Kennel Club is 6 lbs. for chihuahuas. Some chis weigh as little as 3 lbs.!! That's less than a Taco Bell meal !!

Since I first posted in this thread that we had 2 guinea pigs, we have added 3 more. (We adopted the 3 new additions.)

This weekend, my Element served as a guinea pig transport too. We helped transport 2 pigs from a rescue to their new owner & picked up 2 pregnant pigs & a tiny baby from the lady that was adopting (she had pulled the pregnant pigs & baby from a bad shelter situation) & tranported them back up to the rescue.

It was nice to be able to fit 4 people & 2 animal carriers in the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

I have a 130lb. Alasksan Malamute Named Chewbacca (Chewie....unless he is in trouble, then it's DUMB@ss). If you have never been close to a Mute, they seldom bark, they moan like the Chewbacca character of Star Wars. That is where George Lucas came up with the character, from his own Mute. My Mute, is the biggest baby you can imagine....he thinks he is a lap dog! But at 130lbs he is a handful to travel with. I had a full size GMC extended cab 4x4 and there was no easy way to get him in and out. When I needed to start looking for a new ride, I didn't look far (that and I work at Honda East Liberty Plant). The "suicide doors" are fantastic to get his big *ss in and out and, of course, easy to clean. He doesn't drool, but he sheds 2x a year.....from January to June and then June to December! Usually winter isn't so bad. The other thing good about Chewie is if you get stuck in the snow, you can put his harness on him and he can pull you out! I'll work on getting a picture loaded.

No sepia, but the leaf he was chewing on was Photoshopped out by one of my employees. We used this shot for one of the Photoshop books we wrote, and I don't have a scan of the original picture. That was pretty much his natural color. I couldn't believe the shot. He's like a little bear now.

Out of 8 puppies with 3 other bulldogs in the class, he is known as the class clown/troublemaker. He likes to play with the another bully in the class named Bubba. There is also a female bully his age named Princess that he likes a little too much. It is funny that the St. Bernard puppy in the class, that is also the biggest, is afraid of everyone else.

I am lucky enough to be allowed to both live in and pay rent for my American Shorthair, Mr. Kitty (when he was a kitten, he was Baby Kitty, courtesy of my fiance, then he got older and fat so now he's just Mr.). I am his enabler, and he rewards me by being a great pal. He even helps me type papers, and enjoys reading Harry Potter (though, he has to read by osmosis through his tummy, and isn't bothered that I can't read through him).

I am also the happy owner of Lexi, an 80-pound Lab/Doberman mix whom I rescued from some hippies - when I got her, she was fully grown but only weighed something like 55 or 60 pounds, but now she is much happier if maybe slightly crazy. I have yet to take her out in the E, but I got black leather because (aside from all the obvious reasons) it is much easier to get hair off of - not that she'll use the seat, I'm sure she will lay on the floor behind the front seats and give directions.

Steve O - cute doggie! This is Shonie hunting moles, chillin' on the deck with her favorite stick, and pointing on her friends at the lake.

Got the E on Friday, she got in after an hour of swimming and running and it was sooooo nice to see the water bead up on the seat. Exactly what I bought it for (well, one of the reasons!)

Shonie and Bailey are great looking pups!

Dog's know how to live. Someone to keep them in kibble and bones, a cool dog buggy to travel in, and a human trained to sherpa for them in the outdoors. What more does a pup need? :)

My fur babies were a big factor in or decision to buy an E also.
We have:

Abbie, a 10 year old toy poodle that rules over all
Jack, a 3 year old Italian Greyhound wimp
Sophie, 5 year old Retired Racing Greyhound
and Stardust a 6 year old Retired Racing Greyhound

So far, the dogs have not been allowed in the E yet.
The Poodle did get a ride to the groomer in it, but she
had to ride in my lap so she wouldn't put nose prints on
the windows. I've only had my new Element for 2 weeks,
so maybe one day they will be allowed in it!!

The funny thing is that having so many dogs influenced our
decision to buy an E because of the rubber floors w/o carpets
and the flip up seats so that the dogs had space, but now
we don't want the dogs in the car!!!

That was one of the mitigating factors of the E....hauling my 138lb Alaskan "Sissy"mute (Malamute) around. Greatest alarm system in the world!!...he wouldn't bite a flea off his *ss...but people sure stay away unless I am there to keep him from licking them to death. Chewie absolutely loves people! Other animals though, are a different story. He's actually "caught" a couple rabbits, cats (won't eat the cats just "plays" with them), chipmunks, squirrels when they fall off the fence when teasing him....

Ugggg, I know all about the unfortunate little furries who
happen to come into my yard at the wrong time.......trust
me, rabbits playing in the yard when the Greyhounds come
busting out of the door for a potty break just doesn't mix
too well. And baby birds on the ground trying to learn to
fly? Bad decision when they do this inside my fence. Sigh.....

First time poster!

One of the main deciding factors in getting out E was the dogs. We have a GSD and a Siberian Husky. It was getting to the point I didn't want to tak them anywhere in the Focus because of the hair. It would take me literally days to clean out a fraction of the hair.

The bunnies are safe in my yard! For some reason, I can let three greyhounds and twocats out, and the bunnies have never been caught. Yes, there is some running, and it's funny because the bunnies sometimes run back and forth instead of out. The cats have learned to stop running because they'll get run over in the melee.

We adopted 2 more guinea pigs; so we are now up to 7. There were 2 at the Humane Society last week. If nobody takes them we may go get them too. We keep the boys separated from the girls & they are all in large custom-built open-top cages with lofts.

The first 3 are the pigs we got from the Humane Society this summer.

Okay, I’m posting to this thread cause I share my house with pets. The EOC members are a compassionate bunch and pets are near and dear to many.
“My pets.” Understand that I’m not the boss, and if this sounds really stupid, I’m not responsible.
First, we have an eight year old Tarantula named Rose who only requires a weekly dozen crickets, makes no fuss, MY kinda pet.
Next is a hamster my daughter has down in the basement. I personally find ALL rodents repulsive, but I don’t see this one much, so it’s okay.
Then there are the dogs. We’ve had Rocky eight years. He replaced the best dog I’ve ever had, Little Bear, a husky – black lab mix. Anyway Rocky is a Siberian Husky who is dumb in the sly way of a fox. He’ll test you every day, digs up stuff, gets into stuff, and will start howling for no apparent reason. Tonight he was in my wife’s purse chewing something else. The other dog is an overweight female black lab, Princess. Princess came to us because my daughter’s boyfriend’s family couldn’t keep her last year. Princess has a weak bladder and will bark indiscriminately at any dog or person going by our house. We live on a busy street. It’s kind of annoying. We have a fenced yard, and, of course, it’s my job to clean up after these ridiculous dogs.
Finally, the cats. Lucifer is a black cat, yellow eyes, neutered male we’ve had for 9 or 10 years. He’ a lover. Baby Girl is a little black and white female who’s real spooky and has never been outside. W hen the Grand kids come by, she hides behind the dishwasher. We never had her spade. Remember, I’m not the boss. So my 20 year daughter moved back in last April and brought her cat Bailey a black cat, orange eyes, a unfixed male. I hate that cat! Fights with the other animals, just a pain.

And so now I have three six week old kittens who “have to stay” in my little back bedroom computer room. I’m in charge of the kitten rodeo, and while I think pets are great ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

I would love a cat or dog, but the family (wife and 2 kids) are all allergic. I think our littlest one may have asthma. So, we are a goldfish family.

At least I save the money on a backyard fence. I would have to put a fence up because we have a pesky gator in the backyard pond that would love a doggie treat :|

MEKING those hunting dogs or pets my Black and Tan was a big pet had him house broke he stayed inside when i was inside outside when I was at work or when I wasn't inside couldn't get him in my old pickup but when got the E he wanted to go everywhere I went. I've only got two pics of him one when he was a puppy and one him pering over the fence love to post them but I don't have a scaner right now kinda got broke on the way to Texas. I'm thinking about getting a new puppy but I don't think I have the time for a puppy right now with a new job and going back to school in the spring. Dogs need alot of atention in my opinion to keep them calm and not super hyper and crazy

Mine are pets too. Both were given up by hunters who bred them because they weren't good enough at hunting, I guess. (Tell that to the rats in my back alley and the squirrells at the park!) One I adopted when he was three - already calm and perfectly well behaved. The younger one (now 18 months) is still pretty high energy!!

I used to take bourbon which was his name to my family's pond and let him run around while fished studied or what ever and he would chase and tree everything. His speed always got me he somehow caught a squirrel while it was running from him. The funniest thing he ever did was fall asleep standing up It was late and I was eating in the kitchen and he didn't want to miss that possible piece of food that I might drop first the ears would touch the tile then the nose and then the left front leg would just give out it was so funny guess you just had to be there for that one.

Well two weeks can make a world of difference in living with pets.
First the good news. Two of the three kittens went to my oldest daughter. As a single mom with kids eight and six, two kittens will be a lot easier to manage than their recently departed pit bull. The third kitten will stay here. The little rascal has won me over so Papa has a brand new cat.
The bad news. I came home from golf this morning and my wife wasn’t here. Shortly after, she pulled in to the driveway and….no howling from Rocky.! Rocky was Mama’s dog. If she leaves the house for ten minutes, her homecoming is greeted with five minutes of howling and general confusion. And this has been consistent for eight or nine years. So when she came in all I said was “Rocky?” I knew he’d been doing poorly lately, but I just figured it was arthritis. She says “He wouldn’t come in last night and slept in the mud. This morning I took him to the vet”. About then the phone rang, and the news wasn’t good. Enlarged liver, tumors…We went back to the vet and after sitting with our friend for a while, our mischievous Rocky is gone.

That's heart-breaking, Irv. I'm so sorry for your loss. :-(

Glad you were with him, though, to say goodye in person. They can be so stoic that you don't know anything's wrong until they are far along in the illness.

Maybe where he is now the snow dogs hang out together and Rocky and my beloved Buck (1988-2002), a Samoyed, can meet and run in eternity.

Buck was prone to search any open purse that was accessible. Literally had visible fumes coming out of her mouth (yes, her) once after chowing down an entire pack of Velamints.

I have a 3-year-old German shepherd named Hilda (as of three weeks ago), and 2 cats, McP who is 6 and Hazel who is 3, both shelter cats. My E was not only the first new car I have ever had, but also the only one that didn't have dog hair in it. Suddenly with Hilda riding in it every day, it does not look new anymore. Small price to pay, though; it is wonderful to be a dog owner again!

This is Bear, our white GSD, sitting proudly with his new bandana after getting a bath. We got him from a terrific rescue group called Echo Dogs, White Shepherd Rescue. They do a terrific job matching up the right people to the right dog and go the extra mile (literally! they drove him from Indianapolis to Chicago just to see him interact with us) to make sure its a good match. Anyone looking to adopt a Shepherd, I highly recommend them. http://www.echodogs.org/

We couldn't ask for a better pet. 99% of the time, he has no clue he's a German Shepherd! With him, most of the time it's more like living with neurotic Woody Allen in dog form but his instincts kick in when it comes to protecting my kid (his best pal). We live in a urban area and last year my wife held a party out with some of her friends and their kids in the drive way and the kids were playing next to them. All of a sudden this large racoon came running up the drive way towards the kids. They screamed and good ol' Bear busted off his leash and intercepted it and fought it off until it scrambled up a tree. He has a small scar for his efforts but he wears it proudly.

Here are my two beasts and my 9 month old daughter, Ava. The dogs are, Scooter (the bigger), and Sophie (the smaller). Scooter is Mastif/American Pitbull X and Sophie is a English Staff pitty X. She was the runt of the litter. They weigh in 50lbs and 102lbs. They are 5 and 2.5 years old (scooter is older) We love the Element, just got it on Tuesday this week, traded in the '03 Civic Sport Sedan for a more practical vehicle. Got a used '03 AWD Black "Y". Love it.

2 Shar Pei - Boz & Rainey
2 MinPins - Tink & Tattoo
2 Groendahls - Zorra & Zelda
7 catz - Fluffy, BatCat, Spikey Lee, Tybolt, Terra, J.T. & Lil Dogg
several guinea fowl

Dogs LOVE riding in the E; plenty of room and windows and very easy for them to get in and out of. Catz love sleeping on the E (we're in training on that one!), and the birds (thank goodness) aren't into vehicles.

Great scooter run on the Mall today. Well, Gidget was running. I had a nice ride.

With her Christmas attire, she sounded like a herd of reindeer.

2 pugs: SkipperDD (Skippy) and Eloise Rose (Elli). And they LOVE the E! Actually it's their car. (The license plate says: PUGTOY). Have you ever noticed how a pug looks like an Element? Boxy and stout?!?!?! They're both terrific!!!

I found this board while researching the E as a possible (probable) auto update/upgrade. My current ride is a 1995 Accord wagon. I enjoy pet threads....

Here I am receiving a session of cat therapy.

I have way too many pictures of the sisters, and their late mother and brother here (http://sundog.ca/kittens/)...

This board has very good how-tos and a nice practicle attitude. I'll be here more...

The cats are more saintly, they were here long before the dog! Cooper tortures them...Miko (grayish with white) looks at me somedays and I can see it in her face, "Mom, take him back. Why'd you have to ruin our lives?"
I love them all!

Nice cats and welcome!

We have two dogs and a cat. When they were all younger, the dogs would chase the cat and then the cat would chase the dogs. Our house was a zoo! :)

I can't remember if I posted on this thread before but my fiancee has a Miniature Dachshund named CoCo. He is 10 and he only weighs about 14 lbs so he is pretty small. He is chocolate colored and is of the long haired variety of weiner dogs. Even though he is 10, he still acts like he is about 1 year old. He knocks over garbage cans (and eats the contents), climbs onto the table and eats whatever is on it, goes through the laundry and steals underwear, and even though he is only about a foot and a half long, he takes up all the room on the couch. But we love him anyways

I'll post some when I get home, he is pretty much all I take pics of. We have some pretty funny ones of him when he had a surgery on his chest. He had to wear one of those cones, but they were way to big and he would run into doorways with it. So instead they gave him a gauze "tubetop" to wear that had holes for his front legs. It looked like he was wearing a little doggy "beater" tank top.

We have three cats (although, as the official Crazy Cat Guy Of Brown Street, we have had as many as nine). Their names are Tiger, Peep, and Sweetie. They seem to enjoy their ownership of us and have few complaints.

:)

My wife, The Lovely Laura, calls me The Cat Whisperer. I used to hate it, thinking she was making fun - and maybe she really is; but now I kinda like it.

Pics of furries available on request.

Here are 4 of our 5 owners.
Chihuahua is "Abby" (wearing her designer "potato head" glasses and hat compliments of our 2 year old granddaughter.)
The cat is "Michael" (also smartly attired).
Tan dog is "Coco" or "Big Dog' as we call her. She is part Chow and part dog.
Last is "Emma". A Bernese we just got last week.

This is my cat Spooky Spooky. One night when I was kidding around with my girlfriend, I said "God...will you please bring us a kitty?" My girlfriend said that the only animal that she would want to have in the house was a black kitty.

The very next day, I heard a very faint chirping sound from underneath the front porch or our place. I scrounged around to try to locate what the hell it was. Then, I found her. A baby kitten that fit in the palm of my hand. Black nonetheless. Strange coincidence or Godly intervention? Makes me wonder. In any case, God's a pretty swell guy for sending down our beloved Spooky Spooky.

I had the hardest time trying convince my girlfriend that I did not BUY the kitty. She was pretty flabbergasted as well.

And, my E looks just like her! NBP
