First time I saw a scion commerical.. amazing for them to take this long to have a commerical for the scion.. (I had already been aware it was out,, seen them up close & personal.. but shocked by no commericals for all this time.. )..

anyhow oh my gosh was this commerical bad!! And hummm wonder who they are "marketing" to??

have you see it?

very "urban" with young teen-early twenty-somethings (with their underwear exposed outfits, and other trendy-wear).. dancing around to more rap style music (and rap "dance" style motions) but with a Puerto Rican sound.. with the best i could make out did sound like they were speaking Puerto Rican (this was on the sci-fi channel, try and figure that out.).
Oh my gosh it was bad.. horrible, a train wreck!

ok had to share!

They were speaking Puerto Rican? I've heard that sounds like Spanish.

it does but has some differences.. much more so then Spain to Mexico.. even though they all speak Spanish..

Think of how English is altered between England, America, and other countries who use English as well..

There's the dancing one(haven't seen that one here, friend in Cal told me about it)...there's the one where they're driving around a business district at night...the one where they're driving around a parking structure chasing two guys on foot...the one for the new TC model where it's just kinda driving along...guess that's four.

You know that it's really sad that a lot of members here complain how people disrespect the Element and then turn around and disrespect the Scion Vehicles. There are a few vehicles out there that I don't like yet I don't spend my time bashing them on forums like these. Just because you don't like a specific vehicle doesn't make it a bad one. Just like because someone else doesn't like the element, does make it a bad vehicle. If we all had to drive a vehicle that everyone liked, well we'd all be walking. If you don't like the scion that's fine but show some respect to those that do, because you know that's what you want from those that don't like the E.

Temo makes an excellent point, you know. As a community we have to be very careful about put-downs for aesthetics especially when we're entirely too quick to defend - even justify - the E's quirky design.

I'd personally rather see a wide rainbow of quirky (or non-quirky) designs than have a repeat of the '80's "jellybean" cars, where everything looked pretty much like everything else. There's a choice now, and not every single vehicle out there is going to suit everyone's taste. If that was the way the carmakers still worked, there wouldn't be an E, would there?

As to the Scion commercial, anybody remember how bad the first E commercial was? It reflected Honda's (erroneous) thinking about "young male" demographic adding a thumb-your-nose attitude. It was as if it was making up for the tone of the CRV ads running concurrently - "adventures in reality" - which were, frankly, pretty insulting if you were an outdoor-active 20-something male.

You MISSED the point.. i was saying and have not said anything against the scion.. it was about the horrible commerical.. if i saw an Element commerical i did not like i would do the same.

the scions are neat, fun vehicles.. that are a great blank canvas for the creative, or great basic vehicles for those who are on a budget.. (my only beef with them is they are very small inside, and the seats are too spongie.. but they are really neat).

so this is about the COMMERCIAL not the CARS!! ack!

Not totally bashing, but.....
Quote:
Ok do check out the scion in person you will laugh yourself silly.. the seats feel like they used a sponge inside, really cheap and weak.. the inside is soooo small you could fit this vehicle in the cargo area of the E..

these are the kind of vehicles urbanites like to "dress" up with lights and chrome, sound systems (that take up the whole "cargo" area).. these are all show vehicles, nothing real or sensible..

i watched them online and was like eh ok maybe .. but then in person i was sooo glad i chose the E!! the scion is a joke..

I am sure already stated this is Toyota's spin off line, it includes the Xa Xb & Tc so far.. they are geared to be cheap with alot of gems and toys that can be added on like a Mr Potato head..

all in all they are neat in concept.. and fun for many.. so for me i would i would consider the xa it is cute.. but they seriously need to improve thos weak sad seats!!

.. if i saw an Element commerical i did not like i would do the same.

I would just like to see an Element commercial...instead of a commercial where the Element has a brief, cameo appearance in the background.

I get your point Gypsytda. I can think of many television commercials for products that I have used (or do use) that I would probably never have purchased if I had relied on the commercial to persuade me to buy. Given what I have heard, and read in these forums, about the early Element commercials...this vehicle is probably one of them!

Personally I like the whole Scion marketing concept and ad campaign. They are selling an image. Whether that image appeals to you or not is another matter. Look at iPod ads, how much of the ad do they use to show iPod functionality. The entire ad is really about hip young people shaking their booty to a cool beat. Guess what, the campaign is obviously working, look at their sales. Remember ads are not intended to make the sale, they are intended to get their message stuck in your head so you will go test drive, see it, touch it, find out more about it, etc. The sales staff are the ones intended to close the deal.

I agree with MikeQBF on the rainbow of designs (what purdy imagery mikey :P). For a while it seem like every car manufacturer had the same designer doing their bodywork. It was so bland. Now we have the luxury to choose between a lot of interesting designs. A lot of this has to do with the Ricer tuner movement. So we as consumers are seeing a lot of really funky designs at the $20K ~ $30K price point.

Personally, I can't wait for the Honda SUT to come out. The concept car pictures are really cool. I hope Honda keeps the cool features of the concept and add the new V6 and SH-AWD they developed. :)

froggy: this thread is about the commerical not about the vehicle..
i have spoken before that i was not impressed by those things on the scions.. but for many they are good vehicles.. again this THREAD is on the COMMERICAL not the VEHICLE!

silk, that is a good point that they are selling an image.. though I still think the commerical is horrible,

I too look forward to the SUT.. neat!

It was for the tC. The Midwest was dead last in the Scion rollout, so we're behind the curve by quite a bit.

Anyway, the tC commercial wasn't too bad. Nothing to write home about, but I think that Silk is right - at the moment they're concentrating more on image than product. That's probably the right approach - Toyota is seen as pretty stodgy, and unless the "new image" was pushed from the onset, the Gen Y's that Scion is targeting would be turned-off immediately when they walked into the Toyota showroom.

Which makes me wonder how the Toyota dealers' sales staff is going to do with the Scion product! Here they've been selling stodgy, slightly high-priced but extra-reliable cars that are basically WYSIWYG, and suddenly dumped in their laps is a low-cost line that embraces buyer customization. The paradigm shift is probably giving 'em whiplash!

If Toyota's choice for a product rep. for Scion line at NAIAS was any indication, then they might be doing some hiring. He was the most disheveled product rep. I have seen in a while. Car and Driver TV had a wrap up of the NAIAS and the rep. immediately before the Scion rep. had a sharp suit and a cool tie. The Scion guy looked like a hung over college student. I know Toyota has its act together better than to let something like that slip.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if Toyota ends up going the Mini/BMW route. Toyota has been pitching the separation between Toyota name brand and Scion so logically it would fit. They also tend to think long term so strategically it makes sense. It is really hard to retool corp. culture especially from blue suit conservative to young and hip. Imagine a 50 year old veteran sales guy pitch young and hip Scion to a 20 something. It just wouldn't be credible. Think about how Honda supposedly retrained all these sales guys for the Element launch. I know both sales guys I dealt with was not up to the task. I mean they were both talking about their wives's problems, medical or otherwise. Yeah, that translates real well to the 20 something crowd. :P

I agree! I experienced the same thing at more than one dealership while shopping for my E. It was nice to know more about the vehicle than the salesperson, but at the same time, disappointing. I can only imagine some of these people trying to relate to the "target" demographic. Sad and funny! I think the Scion is kinda cool. At least Toyota joins the trend to make cars that don't look alike. I welcome the quirky look of cars like the Scion, after all, the look of the Element played a major part in my desire to own one. I'll be interested to see who actually buys the Scion :)

I saw a dark, purplish one at the public pool yesterday. There was a baby seat in the back. Don't know about age, but they are the "family" type.

I wouldn't buy one, but it looked pretty cool to me.
