: Georgia Road Trip
subie1 07-09-2004, 01:55 AM I just purchased my E a week ago. I have a whole 102 miles on it as of today. The family and I are planning on taking the E for a trip to North Georgia. We want to see waterfalls, forests, national parks, and some mountains. We don't get to see any of this living in S. FL. Since I am not from Georgia, I would like some advice as to nice places to visit in your beautiful state. We only have about a week, so I can't go much farther than North Georgia. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
nautile 07-09-2004, 07:51 AM Well, I'm not actually in North Georgia, but I'm just 30 minutes from there. I'm not familiar with all the natural wonders of North Georgia except for some town that I looked into for my honeymoon.
If you're gonna be on the NW side of Georgia, might I recommend crossing the border into Tennessee and Alabama for a bit? In this part of Alabama, we've got Little River Canyon and Little River Falls, DeSoto Falls, Sequoia Caverns, and DeSoto Park. These are all within 20 minutes of my house.
In Tennessee near Chattanooga, you've got Lookout Mountain, which has Ruby Falls, Rock City, and an incline train. You can see seven states from the top of the mountain. For city stuff, Chattanooga's got a great aquarium, an IMAX theatre, delicious restaurants, and a river boat that goes through the Tennessee River.
If you're interested, let me know and I'll dig up some more information and websites for ya. :D
subie1 07-09-2004, 10:26 AM Nautile, thank you for your response. We were thinking about visiting the Lokout Mountain area as well. I never considered the other areas you mentioned, but they sound interesting. If they are not too far out of our way, we might just check those areas out, too.
nautile 07-09-2004, 11:43 AM Yay, I promise you won't be disappointed! Here are some links I dug up:

I was at DeSoto Falls just last weekend. Here are a few pictures of me there:

I'm the one on the right. Pay no attention to my jeans, I only rolled them up for the wading. That's my sister and her husband to the left.

My sister and I wading across. I'm on the left. That's not the largest part of the falls; you're not allowed to wade around that part. Once again, pay no attention to the jeans.
Here are some pictures I took at Little River Falls a few months ago (http://www.crunchythoughts.com/galleries/thumbnails.php?album=9)
subie1 07-09-2004, 01:13 PM Those are great pictures! It looks like you guys had a lot of fun. Was the water really cold? That's the kind of places we are looking for. You are so lucky that you live so close to such a beautiful place. Thanks for the pics and the web sites. I will definitely check out these places.
nautile 07-09-2004, 08:06 PM It wasn't too bad cold; just cold enough to make you forget it is July. There were a bunch of people swimming about. It's a regular water hole
subie1 07-09-2004, 08:50 PM Well, I bought a bug net for the E today. I know it's no Lund Interceptor bug deflector, but it will have to do temporarily. At least it might protect that area a little bit on this road trip. One of these days I may even buy one of those Cloud Rider grilles. Most cars and SUVs don't seem to protect the radiator and condensor very much. I've been noticing that ever since I started reading posts on EOC. I guess car manufacturers don't consider that a vital area to protect. I guess E people are overprotective.
Thanks again for the great pictures and web sites.

Maybe, just a little bit!

Brendan, I love your responses! They really add to these posts. You have a very dry sense of humor. Thanks for welcoming me to the EOC. This is the best E forum on the net.
brendan 07-11-2004, 06:47 PM Thanks subie. Sometimes I can't tell if I'm adding to or subtracting from the threads... or just confounding the readers! :)

Kayakin' Dan 07-13-2004, 12:51 AM Dunno what you're into Subie, but here are some really excellent links:

Do you plan to camp, or hotel?
And yes, you do have to see Chattanooga and surrounding attractions. The Aquarium is way cool and only 1/2 a day to see.
Redpunk 07-15-2004, 10:19 PM Chattanooga is a nice destination. It's a city with a safe, small town feel. Rock city is fun. I have a few pics fromone of my trips there...

thesussman 07-16-2004, 11:18 PM If you go to Lookout Mountain, make sure you see Rock City and Ruby Falls! I've lived in metro Atlanta for 28 years, and we've gone up to Lookout Mtn. several times, most recently two years ago. Both sites are wonderful.
subie1 07-19-2004, 01:34 AM Thanks everyone for your great replies and pictures. I just returned from my Georgia road trip today...Sunday. The family and I visited Stone Mtn. and hiked in Northern Georgia's Chattahoochee National Forest around the town of Helen. It was great! I saw beautiful Mtn. streams and waterfalls. To me there is nothing more soothing than the sound of a babbling mtn. stream or a roaring waterfall. We had a great time. I was so glad I put on the bug net because it kept them out of my radiator and condensor. My E ran great and had no trouble making it up steep grades. I put on about 1,650 miles on this trip. I guess the E is broken in now.
nautile 07-19-2004, 11:05 AM Hey, glad to hear you had a good time. Stone Mountain is another nifty place to visit; it's weird that that mountain is there. It's like it sprung out of nowhere! Did you see the light show at dusk?

We did see the night laser and fireworks show on the face of the mountain. It was great! The night was perfect and we just sat on the lawn and watched the 50 min. show. I would recommend the show to everyone. I also enjoyed the 4D movie they have at the park. It was called "Tall Tales of the South." The entire visit was really fun. The skylift ride up the mountain was pretty cool, too. My 11 year old daughter was the only member of my family that was brave enough to go on that with me. It is amazing how that huge rock just sprung out of nowhere. I was really impressed.
