eMass 04-02-2003, 01:44 PM Being that it's Spring - my throroughbred mutt  is shedding like crazy. I would like to take him for rides in the E more often but cleaning up all the hair that has stuck to every surface in the car can take a week.
Any ideas for minimizing the clean-up or at the very least isolating it to the cargo area?
Thanks,
->eMass
P.S. Now that we have a pet sub-forum we need a couple of pet smileys. :D
Reddawg 04-02-2003, 07:39 PM Hey eMass just drive around with the windows open and let the hair fly!
:P
I do NOT <DO NOT!!!> miss carpeting one tiny bit. I'm not having a big hair problem...yet. Some days I have 4 dogs in my E...3 in crates and one loose.

boneheadz 04-02-2003, 09:09 PM A lint brush or a wet sponge work great for getting the hair. I also have the rubber sponge thingy (yes, I said thingy) that is made to take off pet hair. It works great. Should be able to get it at a pet store.
Inmyelement 04-03-2003, 05:14 PM Yeah I use that sponge thingy too! It odd, hard to explain its qualities to someone hum? works good in the E
shoreline ms 04-04-2003, 02:07 AM How about giving him a shave first?
VAK9girl 04-05-2003, 02:26 PM Maybe try Static Guard on the seats prior to the dog riding?

Ooooh, static guard! I hadn't even thought of that! That's a great idea - thanks.
VAK9girl 04-05-2003, 03:16 PM no pronlem! I am a K9 handler so I am very creative when it comes to dog fur! :D Walmart has small bottles for less than $1
VAK9girl 04-05-2003, 03:17 PM oops! I typed too fast! No problem.
npfsu 04-07-2003, 04:37 PM purchase a "Mr. Bigglesworth"
jonathan b 04-07-2003, 07:33 PM Hey thanks for this tip on the static...is anyone having the hairs weave their way into the seats?? I have a boxer and the little hairs would have to be plucked out with tweezers in the fabric seats of my Civic! We had "baby crib sheets" that were water proof and fitted so they were perfect for the back seats of the Civic, but I am worried a little about the Element and ever being able to get the hairs out of the seats... :?
angiebanana 04-10-2003, 10:53 PM Well, all I have to say is we liked the seats on the E over the CRV not only for the comfort fact but I also thought they would be LESS apt to attract doggie hair.
We have two long coat chihuahuas. They're not big and dont shed alot, but when my hubby had his 99 Explorer with it's velour-like seats, we had white hair ALL over them! I seriously wanted to avoid that!
I dont acctually HAVE my E yet, should be in in a week or two...but tell me, does it really "cling" to the seats?? I sure hope not! That was one big reason we opted for it!
Angie :D
eMass 04-10-2003, 11:53 PM Umm, well... I hate to break it to ya but - yeah the seats really do seem to attract the hair pretty badly - not only that - they seem to get stuck into the seat material as well. To be honest - our other car (a new rav4) has cloth seats which actually are easier to clean the hair from.
Sorry.
Inmyelement 04-11-2003, 07:27 AM Ok- now that "the boys" have taken over the E (they love it), hair is everywhere. Yes their little hairs seem to "stick" into the fabric only the fabric on the side and lower fronts! URGHHHH ( and greyhounds don't shed! eyeah)
dirkfour4 04-21-2003, 10:52 PM don't suppose Honda would consider making seats that wouldn't allow the weaving of Pomeranian hair with the seat fabric? :)
Static cling spray huh? gotta get some of that :)
BB with the E 04-25-2003, 11:36 AM We found a new produc t on the market, don't know if anyone else out there will find it as neat as me...but it's a doggie TENT! It's called Petmate
Portable, Compact, Water Resistant & Lightweight Homes for Dogs. Comes with Carry Case which folds totally flat.
Sm: 12"x9.5"x10.3"
Kakhi & Maroon, Navy, Hunter Green or Brown. Available in SM, MED, INT, LG, XL. so you can even match it to your E!
They are avail at Petcetera in Canada ( www.petcetera.ca ) it's listed in the April Flyer. The guy at the store said that if you just spray it with waterproofing spray that it will become waterproof. They are excellent in the Element for keeping the DOG HAIR to a minimum inside the E. They run about $170 Canadian (for the large, and I think that's like $2.00 American wink, wink)
They also have a spray (not sure what it's called) but it's unscented and safe for pets. It's like static guard, but it's unscented...so that "new car smell" won't get masked by the spray, he told us the hair is guaranteed not to stick.
I'll try to get the name of the spray....B
Albuquarkee 04-30-2003, 02:58 PM Heck, I have an Australian shepard with the same problem now. I just open all the windows and most of the hairs just fly out the Ute.

MatT3T4 05-10-2003, 01:59 PM I have two red nose pit's...never again will I leave the seats down for them. That hair is IMPOSSIBLE to remove...so now, they just slide around the rear of the E when they go for a ride...
daffy 05-12-2003, 04:46 PM Open all the doors and blow out the car with compressed air. This is easy! [if you have a compressor] :? Daffy
How about putting a t-shirt on the pup? We're going to pick up our E today and that's what we plan on doing. I think clothes on dogs is a goofy thing, but I want to keep that new E clean! And, she'll look cool cuz it's a shirt from Oasis' last tour thru here. :)
eMass 06-17-2003, 11:08 AM I just laminated my dog. Works great!
spldr 08-13-2003, 09:36 AM > just laminated my dog.
Arr Arr! ;-) I am going to try that one!
I have two Beagles that LOVE to go Bye Bye, but I was hesitant to let them in the E for a couple weeks. Trying to keep it Virgin for as long as possible.
Well, sure enuff, within 10 mins of thier first ride, my lovely Female, Kitty, christined the back seat with "Stomach Exhaust". Ain't it the way??? They love you and want to let you know by leaving a permanent mark ;-)
As far as the hair, I use my 12v mattress pump and blow the hair out as suggested above, works pretty good. Residual gets cleaned up with damp rag. The hair in the seats, yep, have those problems too, I use the wad of packing tape trick. Rolls at the dollar store only cost, well, er, a dollar ;-) and last a long time.
I will be getting a tent tho, but one of those cheapy kiddie play tents. They run about 20-30 bucks. I would rather live with a graphic of Barney on a tent inside than clean up all that mess!

I couldn't do this to my mutt. He was looking out the back window one day and ended up in the center console when I braked. So now I put the back seats down flat and throw an old comforter over them. It covers the entire area, and hangs down to the floor. Most of the hair ends up on the comforter this way. (Most, not all). Plus, he loves to look out the window, and now he can without putting his paws up on the plastic trim and scratching them all up. There's still plenty of doggie nose prints though....
LauraJean 08-18-2003, 07:53 PM Hi all. I don't have my E yet.I havee to wait til next Spring. My little Cairn Terrier has long, coarse fur, and once it attaches to something, it's pretty much there until literaly plucked off, one by one. But I've spent the last 4 years fighing dog hair cling in a New Beetle with cloth seats, and this year I finally worked it out. Dryer sheets that fight static cling, once over the seats and then the key for me, once over the DOG! Honestly, it works on the seats, but nothing gets it out of the carpet. Just one more reason I can't wait for my E!
LakesideZ 09-09-2003, 11:26 AM I finally gaveup and decided to adapt my lifestyle to my dog.
I have a dalmation, and their shedding period is 356 days a year (seriously), before we got her, I was a black and white clothing kinda guy, then I found out that was not so great of an idea with a dal in the house, now my black pants have white fur and my white shirts have black fur.
So I finally gaveup and just learned to live with it. Personally I plan on taking the rear seats out of my E when I get it next month and the dogs can lay in the back, since I dont want my dals nails digging into the rear seat, id rather they dig into the rubber floors.
My house is a nightmare for those allergic to dogs. I vacumn in the AM before going to work, and by nightfall I have to vacumn again and with dark green carpets it's like a cake frosting all over them when the Dal starts to roll around. My last safe area is my bed, shes been taught not to get on the bed *anymore*, so i can always retire to my bed and know I'll be hair free in the morning.
Redpunk 09-09-2003, 01:47 PM Someone else suffers the way I do! I have a white/blond dog and a black dog. No matter what I wear-- FUR. Fur on the carpet, fur in the E, fur on the furniture. We have broken 2 vacuums cleaning up fun and we break a belt about once a month. The only solution was getting hardwood floors installed and sweeping 2x a day.
LakesideZ 09-09-2003, 05:46 PM We also have a lhasa Apso, and one day (for the squeemish, you might want to jump over this reply).

My room mate and I were going out to dinner and I was driving and looked over at him and said, you have a stray hair in your nostril, he couldnt grab it, so I pulled over and took a hold of it thinking I was going to give a quick short pull. I then noticed it wasnt human and slowly pulled out a 10" lhasa Apso hair that had managed to get into his nose.
But yeah, the dals hair is a true nightmare (or rather was, since I've gotten use to it), my folks gave me a huge L shaped white couch one year, really beautifull and expensive and theres black hair all over the darn thing, it got to be so much that I finally retired the couch to the garage where my friends come over and get covered in fur.
Redpunk 09-10-2003, 08:34 AM Ummm... nice story :?
My mom has a Llasa and we just shave it. You may want to consider this so you don't have any more of these... awkward... situations.
dawghaus 09-13-2003, 01:23 AM i bought my element as a work vehicle & specifically because of the utilitarian interior. the small footprint rocks for parallel parking, but that's not this thread. i drove the e straight home, took out the rear seats ( i think they're in my storage room... don't really care ), and threw in the blankets & dogg-e bed. with harnesses attached to the rear seatbelts, we were ready to roll. i have all different breeds ( i'm not a breedist, ty ) in & out of my dawghaus 24/7. maybe because i expected her to get beat up by my wrecking crew, i have been incredibly impressed with how she handles the mess. my greyhound christened her with vomit within three hours. i giggled a little as I cleaned it out. for the amount of hair that travels through my haus, very little stays and what does a few pieces of tape and just like that. i couldn't imagine owning another vehicle and doing what i do. & look this good doin' it? ; ^) [/img]
dawghaus 09-13-2003, 01:33 AM that would have been funnier if i could have actually posted the pic of mary ethel. that's why i work with dogs and not computers. i guess the [/img] in my previous post means "imagine" ( mary ethel = a fugly, rubenesque bulldog ).
my dog only does one thing
shed
my mom is even mailing me roll up stickies from the other coast, with a little card that says "i think i can, i think i can," that's how bad it is. I got the E specifically because, among other things it is doggy proof. Alas, that ain't so, the hair is starting to stick.... but it's a lot easier to deal with than in my other car, where I gave up esp. as the carpet there needs replacing anyway.
lae10851 09-28-2003, 07:07 PM My husband has a really nice shopvac by milwaukee electric tool that works wonders. I have 3 dogs - 1 shorthair terrier mix, 1 shorthair finnish spitz and a long coat australian shepard/german shepard mix. I also have the mix of light and dark hair problem. So far I have had my E for less than 2 weeks, but I don't really have a huge hair problem. I pulled out the back seats to leave more room for the pups, but I still have to vacuum hair out of the front seats especially on the sides from where they rub. I have vacummed twice and both times I had it done in less than 10 minutes. I guess a lot of people have been thinking of spraying it out because you can, but a vacuum with attachments works just fine. Anybody else tried it?
