: My hitch install experience

All went well. I followed Brendan's instructions, except...... I didn't scrape
off the excess undercoating on the passenger side. Couldn't get the darn
thing into position. Brought it back out & hammered on it a while. Still
wouldn't slide up onto the box beams. Finally I re-read his instructions &
decided to try scraping off the excess undercoating----slid right into place
easily. I ground the access holes larger with a stone grinder in my cordless.
No problems. A rasp grinder would probably be faster. I was able to get
it on without loosening the pipe hanger. Threading the pull-through wire
from the front bolt hole through the rear access hole wasn't bad. Faster
than grinding the front accesss hole larger.
One warning. After I got it into place for the last time, I was trying to
thread the first nut on the U-bolt that my wife had handed me and whacko!!
The hitch dropped off and smashed me in the face. Beware!! This is not
the way to go about rhinoplasty. Almost broke my nose.

Glad your install went well. What do you plan on using your hitch for?

I'm glad that it...

[ ...LOL...LOL!!!...

...holy crud, sorry, couldn't help laughing there esp. due to the "All went well" intro...reminded me of the time I woke up with an arm across my face..."what the???"...lifted it up a couple feet in panic, only find it was my own with a pinched nerve from a bad sleeping position so it felt like someone else's..."whew!" I thought to myself...and I relaxed...only to let it go and have the 'dead' arm smack me in the face... :) ]

...ahem...it all worked out for you.

For the record, I did wear my goggles during my install. But wood chocks under the hitch once it is in place might also be a good addition. :)

Perhaps we could talk H-and-A into carrying the Honda OEM hitch install uniform.

Sorry to say there was some damage to the hitch during the incedent. There was some paint scraped off the hitch as it rebounded off my cheekbone & smashed into my $300 glasses. Even titanium frames won't
stand up to a 30 lb hitch. There were also some blood stains on the hitch
from the fountain that erupted from my nose. Luckily the stains cleaned
up pretty well.
I'm useing a Full-Swing Yak 4 bike carrier with the hitch. Rack is nice
but expensive & HEAVY. Also when you swing the bikes out, you still can't
open the tailgate all the way. It rests on the rack, so you don't want to sit
on it but you still have the access. Think I would have been better off with
a cheaper, lighter rack. I'll also be towing a 500lb trailer for trips to the
landfill etc. Actually I have the trailer outfitted to carry up to 6 bikes & works well. Not a bad bike carrier system in and of itself. But the wife
wanted some thing she could use solo & driving with a trailer "Freaks her
out".

:o Yea.. the rack is nice, I have it for my Super Duty and have Yak rack for 2 bikes for the 'E'. Both do not allow the lower to open all the way but a small piece of carpet or mousepad can protect as you lower.
I don't need to sit back there, just open the doors and sit change then toss the stuff into the back
