Many years ago, there were gas mileage contests. Engineers in the know would buy some fuel in 85 or 86 octane, and run that....even at low altitude. They opened the throttle positions so little, they didn't detonate. But they knew they could get better mileage. And those who weren't in the "know", bought premium falling for the pitch about it being better fuel, or cleaner, or some other BS line the oil companies used.

I agree....no need to run anything less than 87, but lower octane fuel in mountain states doesn't worry me if that's what is available. If I were towing, I might care more. I've bought lower than 87 a lot for rental cars in Colorado, and there was no detonation and vehicle ran fine. I think 85-86 at elevation with less oxygen in the air performs the same as 87 near sea level. I would not use Colorado gasoline in Florida, that's for sure.

Tampa FL to Cheyenne WY trip

Just got back...2010 E-LX...bought new in APR2010...Nitrogen in tires...87% octane 90% of the time...hit a few places in Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming that had 85% octane...averaged between 65-75mph on major interstate hwy driving...highest I recall was 30.9 in flat areas like Nebraska, Kansas and Florida...we also had the A/C on the entire trip.

Poor MPG

I am doing all city driving and can only get a little over 15MPG so as soon as the weather gets cool again I will change my spark plugs. I have a hunch that they are fouled. My E has 50,000 miles however I purchased this one owner vehicle with 44,000 miles on it. The previous owner was a woman and I suspect that she fouled the plugs from slow driving habits. Anyone have any thoughts.

I have a thought.............that was pretty sexist! I drive faster, on average, than any man I know. Not that that's a good thing ;) Good luck, 15 sucks! Mine increased when I took those awful Goodyear tires off, and that was around 40,000 miles.

Now that's funny. I wonder how far I could go on a tank of gas with the cruise set at 29 MPH....?
